I went to the Ferrari Challenge dinner at Stonepine a few weeks ago. The famous house and equestrian property is now a "Private Function" retreat only. No more hotel though rooms are available if part of the function. Think Weddings, Corp Events. If you ever read the Great Gatsby or saw the movie you'd feel like you were back in time. Wow! Our wedding was at Stonepine Estate and it was an incredible weekend. The venue is so unique for California and it truly feels like you are transported to Italy. Each space is so well thought out, detailed, and beautiful. We loved the charming Italian feel of the Chateau and the Western contrast of the Double H Ranch. We incorporated both into our wedding day and our guests were continuously wow-d as they moved through the spaces. The venue also needs very minimal decorations for a wedding since it is so grand. We stayed on-site in the Chateau which was so amazing. The grounds are beautiful and it was fun to use the pool and enjoy the many available spaces over our three days there (and the incredible breakfasts!). Stonepine has an amazing team. Oceanne and Ari helped us navigate every detail and gave so much care into the planning of our day. Nathan and Julie were excellent hosts in the Chateau and went above and beyond to make our stay wonderful. The wedding truly could not have been a more beautiful or special day. read more

We stayed at the Paddock House. It was a wonderful weekend. The estate is beautifully maintained with many antiques. There are many hiking trails. What made our weekend was getting to know the staff. You can tell they really like what they are doing. We asked last minute if they could accommodate a few friends in the evening and they hosted a party for us. The food was incredible. They were even kind enough to lead a history tour in the evening. If you are having a special event or just need a special place to get away, I would not hesitate to spend time here. read more

This place was a hidden gem in Carmel Valley until a couple of famous people decided to get married there...(ahem, Brooke and Andre...) It's still lovely, though...perfect for weddings and celebrations. Stonepine is romantic, beautiful, and old-fashioned, which is part of its' charm. It's not cheap, but it's not supposed to be a Motel 6. Many people prefer to vacation here with their sweetheart than at the more modern looking Carmel Valley Ranch Resort, although the quality may be equal. If you want to impress your honey and get lucky, definitely take him/her here for a weekend. You'll get smothered in love and affection, guaranteed! read more

Grossly overrated resort with questionable business practices. For what we paid for this place, we expected better. The property is beautiful, and the food good, but the rooms are small and drafty and neither the food nor the room was worth the price paid. There are simply so many other options in the area that provide 5 star service, that the half-hearted effort provided here is unacceptable. From the first arrival, you are made to feel as if you being permitted on the property is a favor that has been bestowed upon you, and that your presence is more of an inconvenience than anything. They are simply hoping that you are willing to pay for the privilege of seeing the remote property, that you are willing to overlook the shortcomings I guess. I will be staying elsewhere next time I come to Carmel. read more

This spot is having troubles. People won't board their horses there, they are getting sued for poorly managing weddings and events (there are always two sides to every story, though). I couldn't even get an email or call back from them in regards to wanting to stay. When a company isn't organized enough to accept money from someone who wishes to give it to you, you can imagine how poorly they will perform across the board. This is a 5 star facility being run by 1 star management. It's a tragedy, because the entire community is talking about how you simply need to beware, and you should expect poor service, poor correspondence, and its a gem that is falling apart. It's too bad... there's always a chance they recoup, but for now, the family isn't too concerned about running this as as stable, reliable business. It's a stunning place, but and I HATE negative reviews... but if you are planning a wedding, it's like playing with fire on your special day. Be wary. read more

I was looking forward to attending a charity event at the estate as its web site makes it appear to be very exclusive and beautiful. The parking for the event was fairly far from the event itself and included a nice little treck uphill. Not the best thing for women in heels or older people who often come to support charity events in the area. There was no shuttle or mention of accommodations to drop people off "on the other side of the gate". When we entered the building, we were directed to the outside area where the event was being held. OK, nice enough grassy area with tables and chairs, but almost no shade. There were a handful of umbrellas but even they only covered about 1/4 of the tables that had their token shade structure. Now this is Carmel VALLEY, not Carmel-by-the-Sea, so sun is pretty much the norm this time of year. For a facility that is supposed to cater to elegant events, most people do not like to melt or get sun burned at their events that they are spending big money to put on. Maybe the meal and service would win me over...I kept an open mind. The lunch was supposed to start at 1:15. There were glasses of "ice" water at each place setting. No appetizers, snacks or any other "munchies" to tide people over as this time had since passed with no food or drink service. The ice water quickly melted into tepid water. Someone said there was supposed to be iced tea served, and there was a container with sugar packets in the middle of the table. But no other beverage was ever offered. Yes, there were wineries there who were giving tastings of their wine, but there was nothing directly offered to the guests and these wines too heated up quickly. By 2 PM we were finally given a small, wilted salad. The taste was adequate but by this time it was pretty warm and not refreshing at all. There were no crackers, bread or anything other than the salad. Then the entree was served. Being a vegetarian I ordered the pasta. It was served in a small bowl with vegetables to mushy they were hard to tell what they were. The only taste that could be made out was red pepper which was in the pasta in copious amounts, so much that it was basically inedible. About 20 minutes later, a small slice of cake was given to the guests. There was no one obviously available to oversee the food and beverages. No manager of any kind was observed during the event or offering any help with the shade or food service. While the $75 was for the charity, it really felt as if Stonepine devalued the fact that it was for charity and gave sub-par service and quality of food and beverages. If the charity paid even $6 per meal, they over paid given the taste and the service. I felt like Oliver Twist having to beg for a morsel of not even food, but ice. The event itself for the charity was nice, with good music and great auction items. Sadly, many people left early because it was too hot and uncomfortable to sit anywhere provided so I am sure that they were not able to raise as much money as they would have if everyone was comfortable and enjoying the "estate". If they have any sense of civic pride, Stonepine should not only refund every penny the charity paid, but also make an additional sizable donation, not just for people to come to their "estate", but a cash donation to make up for this fiasco. All I can say is BRIDES BEWARE....if the place gives this little service to a charity and many wealthy people in the community, imagine what kind of service they will provide you who will only be there one one occasions. read more

It's honestly been many years since I stayed here; my sweetie and I were in the area over NYE so we ventured in for a quick peek at the property. Built for the Crocker family and originally comprising several thousand acres, the estate is a beautiful memorial to a time when cattle barons, oil magnates, railroad tycoons and newspaper billionaires built chateaux, christened hospitals and universities and rode their horses for days on their own property. For about two grand, you too can spend a weekend being served in the family kitchen like Bruce Wayne, or play a game of chess in front of a fireplace that belongs in Skyfall. If you brought your Arabians, you can watch them work out in front of the paddock house, or jump a few obstacles on the dressage course. Look around; last time I was here I saw wild boar roaming the hills. Remember to fill up your tank first ... it's a long driveway! You'll cross a bridge, wind through hills, forest and meadows before finally getting to the main house ... all 40-odd rooms of Mediterranean manse. This time, I just came for the drive in, and back out. read more

A wonderful place for weekend getaway and vacation. The gardens are so beautiful. Rooms are clean. And staff are helpful and warmhearted.

This place is really amazing. It is the perfect romantic getaway. We did not want to leave. The staff is extremely friendly, they just organize everything for you. They have one of those packages full of activities - wineries tour, picnic, horse riding - simply amazing. Sure it is not the cheapest place but no one expects it to be. They have beautiful gardens and the chateau was just heaven. Amazing food and very cute golf course. We are definitely coming back, it is totally worth it read more

The Estate is no longer open for guests to stay over, however they still serve up a killer brunch. I enjoyed a beautiful Mother's Day brunch here recently. After walking the beautiful grounds taking pictures and making several Great Gatsby references we sat down at a table on one of the lawn areas off of the main house. There were only about 20 people dining which made it feel uber exclusive. We noshed on croissants, smoked salmon, artichoke salad, chicken marsala, halibut and prime rib. Waiter service was attentive, but not over the top. I will definitely be coming back for brunch sometime. On a side note, if you are looking for a venue to hold your wedding, check this place out. Stonepine is like no other place in this world! It is Paradise on earth, nowhere else i have been throughout the globe has the romance and rejuvenation as Stonepine in Carmel Valley. Very inspiring place of grace! Located on more than 300 acres to meander and take in with total privacy, on the rushing Carmel River surrounded by awe-inspiring mountains. It seems like you have arrived in Tuscany, Italy right in the heart of the Montery Peninsula. Watch out for the huge family of deer, horses, geese and every kind of animal in this natural habitat of awesome beauty. One can only say Stonepine is truly God's Country. The people who work at Stonepine are so friendly and helpful, very professional-from the Equestrian to the Chateau. And the owners, the Hentschel Family are very caring and kind hosts. No pretension here, only pureness of heart. They support local and international charities and help animals in distress, widows and orphans, disabled persons and victims of human trafficking. You never know who you may meet when there. One day Bill Gates and Warren Buffet walked into the Chateau and greeted us just as we were reading by the fireplace in the library. The estate dining is gourmet combining french and asian cuisine (sometimes with celebrities) but there is also a fun country-western Blacksmith Bar and loft for line-dancing, playing pool while listening to Johnny Cash and Tammy Wynette on the vintage juke-box. We were married at Stonepine and can attest that is was the most beautiful wedding! We return to Stonepine every year for the last 28 years to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we hold an annual family re-union at Stonepine. Our children have been married there and we hope someday our grandchildren will carry on the fantastic tradition. What we receive at Stonepine far exceeds our expectations each time we visit and is well worth what we spend. Special memories are so important and priceless-Stonepine is definitely a "one of a kind" elegant ranch and exclusive estate for unforgettable memories. Stone Pine is absolutely beautiful. My girlfriend and I recently stayed there for a long weekend. We enjoyed every aspect of this property. The staff was especially kind and courteous. If you want to be treated like royalty for a few days this is the place. We were even lucky enough to meet the owner. He gave us a personal tour of the property which included its amazing history. I attended a wedding at this estate this past weekend. Beautiful gardens, lavish interiors, nice weather, horse corrals, and hundreds of acres at your disposal is how I would describe it. All of this for the bargain price of a 100 grand if you want to rent the entire place for the weekend. A little much...ya think? Lavish and expensive as this wedding was...it was a beautiful setting for a mormon/navy ceremony. It could have been better if the seamen didn't have such sticks up their asses...but after a few jack and cokes - they turned out alright. I would recommend this place to anyone who can afford it. There is enough housing on the property to shack up everyone in the bridal party and then some. read more

My husband and I wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life for the weekend (April 20, 2012) We read the one review from uncle Fishbits, Belvedere, Tiburon, Ca and was worried about it. I called and talked to the director of reservation and she reassured me that I would have a wonderful time there. And it was absolutely true. There was a minor problem which she took care of right away and made it better. We had a very relaxing, quiet and wonderful time there. We took a trail ride with a very professional guide, tried the archery and tennis. The food was healthy, like the one you would get from the spa retreat but better and delicious.The ambiance is serene. The experience was worth the money. Holy Toledo! I attended a charity event here on a Saturday which went from a $75 luncheon to a sunburnt ordeal. I am assuming the food, and service was supplied by the Stonepine Estate and not by the charity. There may have been 200 people attending. Food, what there was of it, was an hour late. The day was sunny and warm. The event was held on the back lawn. The tables were harshly exposed to the sun, with a sparse amount of umbrellas distributed among them. In addition, the staff seemed confused and overworked. The spring salad with pecans and feta had a nice mild dressing, but by the time it was served my lovely silver fork, sitting in the sun, was almost too hot to use! The chicken, when it arrived an hour later, was served on nicely done noodles. The vegetarian noodles were less appreciated, I heard. A sad looking ginger cake was brought out way after people had left the table to check on their auction bids. So, that was it: salad, entree, cake. Each course an half hour apart. No bread, crackers, tea, water.... The Estate could not match their food service with the nicely paced program the Charity was putting on. Iced tea and ice water, indeed even ice, was available only after a patron's threatened visit to the kitchen. Sodas, coffee, tea were never offered and were denied when asked if they were available, though sugar, etc. packets were on each table. I was assured by the person who had made the reservation for me that there had been a promise of iced tea with lunch. I would have gladly settled for a pitcher brimming with ice cubes and water! We asked staff if additional umbrellas could be obtained, but there were none, we were told. However, to the applause of one group of sun drenched lunchers, an umbrella was surprisingly found hours into the affair and shared with a party of suffering attendees. Perhaps, silver crossed a palm there... Perhaps it was a Silent Auction item closed early as a mercy... We went to support a worthy Charity, and THEY did a good job. We, also, represent a local charity and appreciate all that goes into organizing such an event. I can tell you our first exposure to Stonepine Resort will be our last. We will not be booking an event there for sure. We would not do that to our donors. read more

My husband and I stayed there late last year, it was wonderful! It's true that you have to drive further in the Valley, but it's worth it! As soon as you drive through the gate, you feel transported in another time, it's so tranquil, so peaceful and so beautiful! The staff was always very helpful and friendly, and we had the perfect weekend, took long walks through the property, it's huge! And we loved our room - we actually stayed in a little "cottage" that had a hot-tub on the deck outside... very relaxing, very nice... and the most comfortable bed ever! I'm a somewhat regular guest at Stonepine and have stayed in nearly all the villas over the years. Each is unique in it's theme and decor. I can honestly say I don't know which is my favorite. Chateau Noel is certainly the most elegant. Most recently, I stayed in a villa located right in the equestrian center just before the Christmas holiday. What a treat! Upon entering, I was greeteded by a Christmas tree - an unexpected surprise. The villa was newly remodeled and very charming in so many ways. When I ventured up to the main house, Chateau Noel, for breakfast, I was awestruck by the beautiful Christmas decorations! Being originally from New York state, I get a little homesick around the holidays. The upscale decor, classic furnishings, and holiday decorations, which included a massive Christmas tree in the main living room, really got me in the spirit of the season. Last summer, I was able to take my 13 year old son with me on a brief business trip to Carmel Valley. We stayed at Stonepine and he really enjoyed it. While there is so much discover at Stonepine, I wondered what a teenager would think of this exclusive resort. I needn't have been concerned. He had a chance to try archery for the first time and it was a lot of fun for him. But his biggest thrill was his first horseback ride. We requested a guide as there are so many trails, we didn't want to get lost. His mouth dropped to his chest when we came upon the horse track. We learned how Stonepine has a quiet mission to rescue racing thoroughbreds from track life and transition the horses to a more pleasurable life. He also enjoyed seeing several beautiful vintage horse drawn carriages which I'm told are utilized for weddings and other special events. If you're into health and fitness, there is a weight training facility, large swimming pool, tons of hiking trails, and secluded outdoor massage facilities too. There's even a mega-sized outdoor chess set nestled among the many beautiful gardens. Stonepine is a private estate resort a short drive from a quaint town with antique shops, fun restaurants and more to experience. I've found the staff personable, professional, and always friendly. read more
