I'm pretty disappointed with the homestead. My cousin was getting married at mission ranch and it was recommended to us by family to stay here for proximity. The photos online were misleading and the single room I had rented looked like something out of 1950. The quilt had to have been at least 20 years old and the room smelled like moth balls and dust. It was so tiny it was literally a queen sized bed with a tattered and weathered down chair and desk. It was room 51 and it was on the road, with very thin curtains, and old windows. I could hear all the traffic and street noise. The bathroom is tiny with a small stand alone shower and toilet. Rustic is one thing, run down is another. I didn't find the room charming whatsoever and the musty / old smell was so bad I ended up sleeping upstairs in my mom's room. My face was rashy all evening from either the detergent or dust. The coffee machine was old and produced very unsatisfactory coffee, the only creamer was package coffee mate, and cheap sugar. The beds were okay, but the pillows were small and lumpy. I can't reiterate enough how stuffy the rooms smell. Little things: a new bed spread, airing out the room or providing an air filter, nice fluffy towels, new pillows, organic sugar and an updated coffee situation would make a world of difference at a very inexpensive fee. They don't have paper to-go cups for coffee, and the shower had two settings (boiling or freezing.) Love Carmel, but would not stay here again. read more

Hey homestead. You're a great neighbor and we love seeing happy tourist wandering the neighborhood. But ..... is it really necessary to blow leaves twice a week for almost an hour every time. Your Gardner has headphones but we don't. Nice guy but half of the time he's blowing off his clothes his truck the streets. It's truly overkill for us residence and members of the heritage house. Loved the charm of the Homestead and the beautiful succulent garden in front of the inn. There were 3 of us and our room was spacious, as was the bathroom. Also appreciated the light from windows on 2 sides of the room, and the stone fireplace. The room was painted a lovely cream color and had overhead beams and attractive paneling on the walls. I slept well and didn't hear any noise or traffic. We walked to shops and restaurants. Would stay again if I happened to be in the area. Just when you thought it was impossible to sleep in Carmel for less than $200/night, a little bird tells you about Homestead. How is this place such a secret? It's owned by Clint Eastwood, and right in the heart of downtown Carmel AND they have rustic rooms for less than $100/night. Say whaaaat? There must be a catch. Yes, you need to call to reserve your room (queue millennial grumbling from the tech-dependant like myself). A worthy effort for such an amazing deal. The property has two versions of itself: the updated rooms ($160-180) and the "rustic" rooms ($95-110). I've stayed in both, and the modern rooms are definitely worth the upgrade, a million times nicer than the rustic. Our rustic room was essentially a tiny crash-pad, no frills. The modern room had 2 big beds, a fireplace, nice furniture and a huge bathroom. So, if you just need a place to sleep, go rustic. If you want something more cozy and romantic, go modern. Either way, the respectable pricing makes Homestead all-around loveable in my book. Extras: there's a small communal garden area with fireplace they can set-up for you. Free continental breakfast is served at Mission Ranch (Clint's other property) 1 mile away. We can all agree that Clint Eastwood is a badass. There's the obvious connect: Dirty Harry, Unforgiven, The Enforcer, Every Which Way But Loose... Even in his old age, I wouldn't mess with the man. BUT that's actually not why I'm singing his praises. It's for his affordable accommodations in Carmel Valley. You might be aware of his beautiful property, Mission Ranch, located right near the ocean with sheep grazing in the meadow. Breathtaking! If you have not seen or stayed here, book a weekend now. Did you know that Mission Ranch has a sister property located near downtown Carmel? Yep, it's true. And rooms are less than $200 per night. We stayed in a "rustic" room for $110. Probably not the fanciest ever, but it offered Pottery Barn sheets, kitchenette, flat screen TV (with cable!) and a fireplace. Plus, it allowed us to walk to any of the restaurants or shopping in DTCV. My parents were along for the ride and stayed in an upgraded room at Homestead which cost $160. Upgraded = no more wood paneled walls, plush carpet and a ginormous bathroom. Not sure if you can find a much better value in Carmel. Based on the location, amenities and cleanliness, I would definitely come back! read more

I love Mission Ranch. My family has been going there for well over a decade, so I was horrified by our treatment at The Homestead. We were coming to Carmel for a birthday weekend, and had reserved a room with two beds. My traveling companion is disabled, so we made sure to ask that there were no stairs. Yes, confirmed, two beds, no stairs. When we arrived the woman at the front desk seemed bothered and cursory. We again asked for a room with no stairs, and were told that it was up the hill, but promised no stairs. Imagine our shock when there were actually several stairs, uneven stone with limited handrails... and then we open the door to our room and there is one bed! The person at the front desk did not seem to care that the room was not what we reserved, and blamed whoever took our reservation ("Oh, that's Brenda's fault," as if that fixes the problem or we care). The email confirmation specified two guests, but doesn't list the number of beds. There were no other rooms with two beds, and none available at Mission Ranch. We were left stranded with no reservation on a Saturday night, despite booking this months ago. I understand that mistakes happen, but the desk clerk's attitude was very rude and unapologetic. The Homestead is not very homey, and does not seem to want the business of disabled people. read more

We booked here as a last minute trip down to Carmel and were lucky to get a room. Ended up enjoying it so much we rebooked immediately and have another trip planned. Not fancy. Clean, comfortable and very helpful staff. Parking can be a bit of a challenge, but location is so good worth the time to search out a spot. read more

My boyfriend & I planned a last minute trip to Carmel for our anniversary. We were able to get a room no problem for the days we wanted too. The room was adorable and so spacious, felt like a cabin. I really enjoyed how each room was spread out from the next & how it was so quiet. You are literally right in downtown Carmel! We would walk there for breakfast & to look at the shops & the walk was less than 2 mins. Also, super close to the ocean too! Homestead is a sister hotel to Mission Ranch & they have a little deal where you can make a reservation there for dinner & have priority seating! We totally took advantage of it; amazing!!! I was looking for hotels in Carmel with only a few days' notice and was starting to think that all the good places were booked up. I tried Mission Ranch based on some initial research. They were full but directed me to this place, their "sister" (apparently). I was admittedly very nervous because the woman who made my reservation kept emphasizing that we had a "Rustic" room. So I was braced for the worst but it was perfectly fine! Our room was standalone, so no noise from other rooms. It was HUGE and had its own private deck and kitchen. Boggles my mind that this is available for $110, but I really hope it stays that way. Best deal in town, hands down. I must deduct one star because of the painful reservation process. The woman at the desk sounded about 95 years old. She was very sweet but I had to spell my email address about six times. She was not familiar with "yahoo" so I had to spell it out for her (hilarious). Then the next day I had to call back because my email confirmation never came through. When I spoke to her again, it turns out she forgot the "@" in the email address. TOO FUNNY! A small and fairly amusing hassle, totally worth it for the deal of the century. read more

I must agree with the previous review - The Homestead Inn was quite old-fashioned. The room was very large (huge bathroom) and obviously remodeled, but I think they could have spent a few more $$$ and upgraded the heating system. They only have 2 wall heaters (including one in the bath) and we were freezing! They finally sent up 2 electric heaters which prevented us from turning into ice cubes! The front desk manager is a very nice lady - has worked for Clint Eastwood for almost 30 years and used to manage his "Hog's Breath Inn" restaurant. However, you have to trek over to Clint's other place, Mission Ranch Inn, to get breakfast in the morning (almost a mile away). Being an older place, their elevator was out of service and our door would bang on it's hinges every time someone on our floor went in or out of their room! For the money we spent on this room ($265/night), we could have stayed in a much nicer place with many more modern amenities. Until the management decides to "upgrade" this place, you might want to stay elsewhere. read more

Although the price is reasonable and the location is beautiful, we would not stay here again. We were given a room in the lower level near the office and we could hear everyone above us as well as people going in and out of the office. Not very sound proof which is understandable as this is not a traditional hotel. In addition, there are no amenities on site such as a vending machine with snacks/drinks. We did go to a corner market but very expensive. We should have researched it more but we did enjoy the surrounding area - again vey beautiful! read more

I used to stay many times over the past few years. I had loved the residential location, but the friendly service has vanished. The management has deteriorated to the point of disgust. I have NEVER written a negative review, EVER, but Wow...what a shameful lack of interest in service, accommodations, or response to their clientele. Extra special customer service! My husband and I were on our way to Carmel for the weekend on 2/2/19 and received a phone message that the Homestead didn't have power due to a storm and wasn't expected to be back on until 6 or 7 pm. The management offered us an upgraded room at the Mission Ranch since it was powered by a generator! We had a lovely room at their sister property. When we checked out the next day, the front desk employees said the Homestead was still out of power and hearing this, it made us even more grateful for our room at the Mission Ranch. read more

Liked our stay a lot. The best deal in Carmel. We had stayed a couple of nights prior in a wonderful much more upscale place on the cliffs of Big Sur, so, this (and we knew) was a step down from extra special-ness and pampering of where we just were. What we liked is it is walking distance to shops and restaurants. The neighborhood is completely cozy and quaint. So quaint. The room was clean, nice bed, great sheets and towels. I feel like the Homestead is a "hidden gem" in Carmel's often overpriced lodging world. I spent my honeymoon there 35 years ago! It is NOT fancy, it is NOT for those wanting big screen TV's and internet access. But don't we want to get away for awhile and not be glued to all that stuff? The grounds are filled with gorgeous flowers...they have a bench next to an outdoor firepit to enjoy. The rooms are cozy and affordable....the one I stay in has a small fireplace, kitchenette and eating area....it fills like a sweet little studio apartment. Open the picture window and you see the beautiful stone fireplace and tons of flowers in bloom. It is just 2-3 blocks from the main drag....so it's close to everything. Can you beat that for the cost of $110 per night? I don't think so! read more

My two girlfriends and I all love this place! We book the largest room every spring for a couple of days of dining, walking and shopping. In the mornings, we get up, take turns showering in a spacious bathroom, and head over to Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch for a lovely brunch. Then we walk on the beach, have lunch, shop until dinner at one of the great places in Carmel. We eat one night at Mission Ranch and another night at Little Napoli, a fabulous Italian Restaurant. We've been going to Carmel for over 20 years. We've sampled several restaurants and hotels and keep sticking to the choices I've listed. Even if you choose another place, be sure to try the Mission Ranch for dinner. The views are incomparable! I know that there is no cable at the Homestead. All I can say is, thank God. We all need a break at some point or things are pretty sad. read more

Pros: Stayed at the queen remodeled room. Price is very affordable. Very spacious room with a small dining area. Both the outside and inside of the hotel looked great and clean. Has a small kitchen with microwave and fridge. Good customer service. Within walking distance to everything. Cons: Parking is on the street. Bathroom was very small. This was a very quaint Inn. We were pleasantly surprised by its charm. A lot of choices in Carmel but I recommend Homestead.

Nice place but determinedly old-fashioned: lousy TV (not a flat panel; the most basic cable imaginable; very small) and no Internet access of any kind. (How is that possible in today's world?). Plus the bathroom had dispenses for shampoo (dispensers!). In a bad economy when the hotel was clearly largely empty, to charge $220+ for a room singularly lacking in amenities is ridiculous.
