We were in the area for a vacation in Big Sur and our flight home was cancelled. We booked at Candle Light Inn for the night. It was A-ok. From a cleanliness standpoint we were satisfied. The rooms are fine in size. The price point was standard for Carmel. The front desk staff were sweet. The bathroom fixtures (sink and shower) could use some tlc and the clearance on the front door had a gap which meant air from outside or critters could get in. This was just fine for a one night stay. I would necessarily stay here for a special occasion trip since it's lacking in extra amenities but for a pitstop it certainly was fine. this is an extremely well kept and cozy inn, very well put together, clean and romantic. The staff and facility management were fantastic and as soon as we left, we knew we would want to return. We visited another one of their sister locations in half Moon Bay (cypress inn on Miramar beach) in February and will actually be returning to this specific location in carmel again at the end of this month. Candlelight inn has a wide variety of rooms, including those made for a simpler stay and within a smaller budget as well as premium rooms with specialty hot tubs and extra space for an even more romantic getaway. Both types are perfect and well suited to whatever you are intending to escape for. We are extremely grateful for the effort made by all those involved. It was definitely evident that everyone went the extra mile to make sure we were comfortable and well cared for. Cozy and cute. We checked into our hotel room came with two complimentary designated parking spots. The rooms are tiny but I am sure a lot of rooms at Carmel are limited in space also we had two beds in our hotel room so that also took up most space but nonetheless it was very clean inside. They had coffee, tea, cookies, and fruit at the front desk served all day and the coffee was actually pretty good. Finally in the evening the turn on the fire pit on which is so calming to sit and relax next to you. Overall a great experience but my favorite part was the list that they gave me for local restaurants, shopping stores, and bars where if we show our room key we can get a free appetizer, glass of wine or even up to 10% off. Only some hotels provide these little additions it was a nice treat. read more

We stayed overnight at this beautiful boutique motel on 6/2/24. The motel is an older property but has been remodeled in the last couple of years. They did a nice job. Its new, clean and comfortable. Loved the fire pit (just outside of our room) and the closeness to restaurants and shops. A couple of negatives are the tight parking spots and lousy coffee in the reception area. Overpriced ( $500 per night) place with small jacuzzi for one with wild noisy jets and noisy defective handle. This tiny stinky Jacuzzi for only one person has automatic cleaning cycle and it is ridiculous as hazardous for you skin . it stings the room and every time it feel you bathing your self with bleach . Small room with weird electric fireplace , hard mattress and if you have room upstairs be aware you will have to climb about 10 stairs with your luggage because they are no elevator in this "luxurious place". Don't look for swimming pool or sauna or large comfy jacuzzi with tv above which you should have , if you paid this kind of money. I am very disappointed about this motel with depressing looking lobby and " luxurious " room . It is screwed up my birthday. Very nice hotel with remodeled rooms and conveniently located close to shops on Ocean Ave. I stayed in the premium king suite with jacuzzi tub. The room was small but super clean and had a comfy loveseat. The jacuzzi was a bit weird, with an automatic cleaning cycle that started up while I was in the tub, I guess because I had drained some water which triggered the cycle. There is no A/c in the room but they do provide a small fan. The most disappointing feature was the bed, which was hard like sleeping on a board. I woke up with a very sore back. For this reason I may not return, especially considering how pricey this place is. read more

We were there just this last Friday and we were late to booking a room so we couldn't get the room with the hot tub. We initially called another place called wayfarer or Wayfair something like that and a guy named Dale recommended this place to us because they were fully booked. He helped us with the reservation, took our credit card information, told us we'll have the second floor ocean-view room and we could check in at 2 pm. We got to the hotel at 2 pm and we were told that our room was on the first floor and we corrected them and told them that Dale told us it was going to be the second floor. At that point the manager said, " there are no notes, so I don't know where the miscommunication was". THERE! MISCOMMUNICATION WAS RIGHT THERE!! BETWEEN YOU AND DALE LMAO. So, we were told that the upstairs room wasn't ready and they couldn't give us an exact time when it would be ready but they'd give us a call. We didn't hear back until 3.30 pm so we went in and our room was not ready until 4 pm. Now, about the room.... ocean view... What ocean view? LOL. The room was on the smaller side, it was very clean however. The floor was really creaky when you walked around but I'm sure it's because it's an old building and it didn't bother us. Ocean view room didn't have a patio facing the ocean either. It was $460 for a night so easily over $500 with taxes. We've stayed at a much nicer room with a real ocean view and a hot tub for $375 a night not far from there. And it was during covid but they'd still leave us breakfast in a basket at the door in the morning. This place offers cookies and coffee which is nice but they can do better. Having said that, the manager was nice enough to give us a late checkout upon asking. They also gave us a bottle of wine for our trouble which we appreciated. There were two other front desk people we encountered who were super nice and pleasant. The inn is definitely in a nice location. Make sure to book in advance so that you don't pay too much. read more

My husband booked this spot for our 15th Anniversary and I guess he knows my style because I really liked the decor of the rooms! This was our first hotel stay since COVID hit, and I had no doubt that it was thoroughly cleaned before we got there. The lobby for check in smelled really good with whatever air freshener they had, and it was really clean and modern. The lobby also has pre-packaged (due to COVID) freshly baked cookies and hot chocolate. The colors of the room had a nautical theme and I would love to do my own room at home like this. The bathrooms are small but the shower pressure was great, unlike a lot of hotels. The room and bathroom were very clean which is a HUGE deal for me since I get grossed out when even finding a hair that doesn't belong to me. Then that piece of hair would bug me for the rest of my stay. Housekeeping left packets of hand sanitizer wipes in the room along with packets of makeup remover which I found to be useful. The tv remove control was also wrapped up in plastic to indicate that it had been cleaned after the previous guest, and there was also a packet of a surface cleaner wrap put next to the remote. The bed was comfy and the blankets were cozy. Unfortunately I didn't get under the covers much since it was hot and the rooms don't have A/C. We found a small fan in the closet and that worked good enough. Also in the closet were cozy robes for you to use during your stay. I'd say this Inn is a romantic spot for couples, and not so much for families as there's no pool or restaurant on site. The parking lot is a little tight and because all entrances to the rooms face the parking lot, you will most likely be awakened by the sound of cars starting up, the housekeeping team rolling their carts right outside your window (we were on the ground level) and people talking loudly. But you're on vacation and there are a lot of shops to visit in Carmel, so there's no reason to sleep in anyways! If in Carmel again, I'd definitely stay here. read more

Of the many beautiful boutique hotels in the Caramel by the Sea area, this one is a pass. It's next to a Best Western, which may be a better bang for your buck and across the street from the Stilwell, which may actually offer you more quality and a peaceful nights sleep. This Inn offers a decent size room and good clean bed, but it seems to have fundamental infrastructure faults. Those being the flimsy shower handle and the poorly built walls. While there are noise ordinances for quiet time between 10pm-8am, it doesn't help when the floors and walls are not built to withstand basic noise - like walking on the second floor or even conversation from one floor to the next. I didn't get the quiet, peaceful nights of sleep I had hoped for. Upon talking to Management, Amber, didn't seem to know how to accommodate my request, instead furthermore was disrespectful in accusing me of coming in to ask for a discount. This I found upsetting and disappointing. I know better now, to stay elsewhere and would like to save anyone else the trouble. This place is basic, doesn't come with any thrills for the price, and while the sister property offers breakfast, they do not. I would give this a pass and hope I help others make a better decision. There are tons of lovely places in Carmel, this doesn't offer anything notable or worth choosing. read more

Truly a hidden gem in Carmel! This was our first time staying at this hotel and was beyond our expectations. It may look small and quaint from the outside, however the rooms are modern and updated. During check-in and checkout, the front desk staff was friendly and accommodating. They provided information about the property and local restaurants. Also, they offered us delicious fresh baked cookies. We stayed in the Deluxe King Room with fireplace and jetted tub. The cleanliness of the room was impeccable, which was especially important to us during COVID. The location of the hotel was excellent and within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and the beach. We had no issues during our stay. Will definitely be returning in the future. They say they have breakfast but it's really nothing - a pastry, some fruit. The hotel really is not romantic at all. The only benefit is the location because it is within walking distance of the fancy restaurants and art galleries, with unaffordable art. Candle Light Inn is definitely a cute and cozy stay! Upon checking in, the front desk was very friendly and helpful! There were a ton of maps and brochures that actually helped us with the rest of our trip. She also gave us a map of the area and amenities that were in walking distance to the inn. Check in also had fresh cookies and tea that you can help yourself to. Our room was BEAUTIFUL. Though it was more on the expensive side, I would love to stay again. The room felt very new and up to date, and very spacious. I fell in love with the bathroom! The shower was very nice and the hot tub was great for our 7 hour drive! There is a warning sign though - above the hot tub, warning that it does its "cleaning" after 20 minutes. Kind of sucks when you're relaxing and then it just goes off... and then you smell like chlorine :( I guess it would be helpful if there was a timer you can physically see so you know, lol. Other than that, it was a very nice inn and if we ever stay in NorCal again, we'd would gladly come back. read more

We stayed here for our trip to Carmel. Rooms: I loved the decor and the furnishings. I loved the little couch and "living room" area with a faux-fire place. The restroom had a glass door shower and a nice jetted tub. The only complaint is that the tub has an auto-cleaning function that is suppose to go off 20 min after you step out; however, it went off while I was in the tub. I also thought everything was pretty clean as well. No complaints there. Service: The front desk staff were very welcoming and helpful with directions and questions. There's coffee in the main lobby as well as a fresh platter of delicious cookies in the afternoon. Breakfast: You get to write what you want for breakfast the night before on a card and the next morning, they drop off your food in front of your room with your complimentary breakfast in a nice lunch box. I've never seen this done before but I really liked not having to get ready to go out for breakfast. We just ate in bed. The only down side was the options for food. They basically just had cereal, fruit, yogurt, juice and a pastry (which you can't really choose what kind). Nothing warm, no meat, no eggs, no protein really. Amenities: the only other amenity is a nice fire pit in front of the place which was nice. The seating area is divided into 4 sections you can get your own "private" area next to the fire. Find out what time the fire pit closes but it definitely does. Location: It is located just on the edge of the main area in Carmel which makes everything a longer walk to get to. A more centrally located place might be better. TL/DR: I enjoyed my stay. It was clean, the decor was nice and service was good. I enjoyed the breakfast being brought to my room but the options were lacking of anything warm. Location is on the edge of the main Carmel area which makes things farther. Such a beautiful, quaint place in an absolutely charming town along the Pacific. Candle Light Inn is adorable and after a long drive to Carmel, we were greeted with hot chocolate, coffee and freshly baked cookies! The lobby has a fireplace and it was very magical like something out of a fairytale. The rooms were spotless, smelled clean and we had a huge bathroom with a tub that fit two adults, a huge shower, nice sized (and comfortable) bed with a fireplace. Absolutely loved this hotel. We stayed here for part of our honeymoon trip in March. We were given a bottle of wine upon arrival since we were celebrating. They give you cookies and hot chocolate or tea every day in the lobby if you want it. The cookies were so good! The front desk staff, housekeepers, and manager are all super friendly and caring. Really nice property overall and amazing hospitality from the employees. The rooms are modern and impeccably clean. There is no AC, but they do have heating, which is fine considering Carmel-by-the-Sea tends to be on the cooler side at night. Front desk staff was extremely friendly, helpful, and work long hours. They provided ample information about the property and the town and offered us fresh baked cookies upon check in. They do take COVID precautions seriously - we felt very safe during our time there. The location was outstanding. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a beautiful little town and the hotel was within easy walking distance to good restaurants, shops, and the beach. We had an easy 2 minute walk to the beach from the inn to catch the sunset and it was stunning. I love love love the Candle Light Inn. I think I've been here a good 4 times and each time is great! Me and my boyfriend frequent Carmel and Monterey and this is the ONLY place we stay. It is such a quaint small Inn with about only 20-25 rooms. We always stay in #20. The rooms are very modern and aesthetically pleasing. Make sure you get a Premium King room because it has a Jacuzzi tub and fireplace. These rooms also have a small living area with a couch if you want a little extra room. The beds are super comfy and I always sleep so well when I'm here. The location is very close to the main "downtown" area of Carmel and within walking distance to tons of restaurants and stores. The reception will even give you a list of discounted restaurants that the Inn offers to their occupants only. We always walk wherever we need to go because it's so close. They also have hot and fresh cookies for you at the reception area and if they don't have any ready, they will make you some. They are so yummy! I LOVE this place and there is absolutely nowhere else I would choose to stay while visiting Carmel. They have a cute fire pit in the front with a seating area for you to sit out and have a glass of wine. I mean the place is truly a total vibe. This is the perfect place for couples looking to get away. The rooms are always clean and the service is always superb. I would HIGHLY recommend. After you stay once, you will receive emails with really good promotional offers. But be advised, they book up pretty quickly especially when there are promotions so make sure to book in advance. Punk rock band yellowcard wrote a song called the "Ocean Avenue". In which featured heavy violin and young teenage angst and screaming. And when I was staying at the candlelight inn and it seemed to be a perfect situated short walk to a place called ocean Avenue. All my life, I have never really been to Carmel until recently, I totally reccomended this being a place for your excellent romance get away. This is a romantic Tudor-styled in that have a small(intimate) residency for about 20 large rooms. You can't see the ocean from your room, in which makes that the only real bummer, but you cannot blame them. If you like a clean room, within walking distance to so many great places, bars, restaurants, wine tasting, this is a great place to go. Most rooms have a fireplace, and even outdoor there is a fireplace to warm you up. The room I stayed in had a bath tub jet, in which in 20 mins starts to self clean itself. Intresting. There is small small almost non existant parking in the parking lot, as in if you dont have to move your car...then dont do it. I say for the location it was good. Hmmm for the price, I think you possibly can do better, but do your research on what events are happening, and try websites(Orbitz) and compare prices. Remember this place has been Renovated, so you may see some imperfections in things. Yet, I tended to look pass it because the staff was fantastic and gave me alot of cookies. read more

The overall 5-star rating for Candlelight Inn can't be real. Carmel gets 5 stars. Carmel Beach gets 5 stars. Candlelight Inn's location in the middle of town gets 5 stars. But the hotel itself?? Meh. This is really just a motel located in a (very) fancy part of town. A standard room will get you 2 beds with a small bathroom and no view. The beds are comfy, the TV is functional, the chairs have some wear-and-tear, but it's really nothing spectacular. Especially not for the price, which will run you around $250 on any given weekend for one night in the most basic room. The breakfast they deliver in the morning (in a cooler) is 2 small yogurts, 2 sugary pastries in saran wrap, a banana and an apple. Ummm. 5 stars? NOPE. The people who work here are really nice, and there's a lovely fire pit in the parking lot (notice I said "in the parking lot"), and there are cookies and tea in the reception room. But please don't expect the ultimate B&B experience, because really, friends, it's just a motel. The rooms with hot tubs and fireplaces are nicer, but if I were you I'd spring for another B&B that actually *feels* like one of those romantic, cozy places people pay $250 a night for!! P.S. Beautiful hotel and room. We got the premium king room for a night to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel staff were amazing and the room was perfect for a romantic night in. We were in walking distance to many takeout restaurants which was perfect because of covid. The fireplace in the room was beautiful and put out a surprising amount of heat. The outdoor fireplace was nice too because each section is partitioned so it feels very private. My one requirement for a room on our anniversary was a two person tub and this one did not disappoint. It was the perfect size for the two of us, and the separation from the rest of the bathroom was perfect to keep a romantic atmosphere. There's a dimmer light switch (so no unflattering bright lights), robes were provided and there are different pressure settings for the jets. We loved it and will definitely be back! read more

We just spent the night here on our way back down from San Francisco. The room was very neat and clean. The shower was clean and well stocked with the essentials. The staff was very friendly and greeted us with cookies and hot chocolate! We will definitely be coming back to relax a few nights.
