Quality/Quantity - My wife never likes to stay at motel style places, but due to our last second decision to visit Carmel, she settled for here. And we were both VERY pleasantly surprised. 5 stars surprised. With that said, I would be happy to make this our future go-to place. Espresso machine in our room, thank you. Atmosphere - VERY centrally location in the city. Walkable everywhere. Clean, safe, well organized, and an updated location. Small parking lot, well compared to the # of guests...? It was hard to find a space, but the good news is that everything was walkable, so we did not need to look for a space twice. Service - 5 stars. Everyone is nice, welcoming, friendly, etc. Hot breakfast in the morning. Seems like most baked goods are even done in house...? "Happy hour/wine hour" and snacks in the afternoon and evening. Easy check in and out. Price - $300 a night; expensive, but this is Carmel. On a Monday, well it was a last second booking. The reason they didn't get 5 stars is because of the insulation. We could hear people talking outside our room so there is a little lack of privacy there. They know this and provide earplugs. From the minute we checked into Coachman's inn til we left we had the best service form the staff. Considering most of our stay had no power! Due to storms and a blown transmitter. Not their fault! The manager and Assistant were more than helpful with things to see and ways to get there. All the usual concierge things. The inn itself was located in a quite but convenient location. Easy to walk to everything in town. Our room was awesome. A double room with one full and one twin bed which was fine. Great clean bathroom . It's an older property kept extremely upto date and well. They had a great espresso maker not your average hotel room coffee machine! All the usual things you need, iron, board, hairdryer, fridge, extra blankets . The hotel provided a great hot breakfast the first morning for all guests. Which I didn't know about til we checked in so a nice bonus! Great pancakes and fruit, toast, muffins, croissants and yogurt bar and oatmeal. Juices and tea and coffee. It was a nice generous spread. The next day because of no power they did what they could and had cereal , yogurt, pastries, fruit, and cereal bars they managed to get hot water so to make instant coffee . They went above and beyond! They also have a wine and cheese hour at 4pm . First day they had hummus, cheese, veggies, dip, fruit and a homemade peach Bundt cake. Next day they managed to provide just as much. The wine was nice local red and white. You could also purchase other bottles if you wish. The breakfast and wine area next to the office was a nice area with a fireplace, magazines and board games and tables and chairs. They also provide hot cookies in the afternoon. You could also go hang out there too. It was super nice and cozy the first wine afternoon with the fireplace on. They provided us with battery operated lanterns for our rooms and in the breakfast area. These gave off a lot of light so was really nice to have them in the rooms. I actually bought some for my house as they would be great for when we have no power. Highly enjoyed our stay here and the power did come back on before we left. Which was nice. After looking at many places to stay my stay, I landed here at the Coachman. I 10000% made the right choice- for every reason possible. Location is great, as it is just 1 block from everything downtown. Parking is easy and available on site. The staff is very nice & helpful and put out a very nice spread for breakfast in the morning and wine & appetizer hour in the evening. Rooms are up to date, clean, & very comfortable. Just returned home from an OUTSTANDING four days and three nights at the Coachman's Inn in Carmel by the Sea. First off, I made the reservations online several months ago and had to change the dates twice to accommodate my personal obligations. This involved calling the front desk and changing the dates was effortless. Great customer service from the start. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and checked into our King Deluxe with fireplace on the third floor. Miranda at the front desk was lovely and accommodating. Our trip started with their daily 4:30 wine and cheese reception. This was a BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY of vegetables, dip, carafes of red and white wine; assorted nuts, dried fruits and cheeses, with several different types of crackers and a desert cake, gratis for guests. Wow! And it gets better.... The first night after traveling for hours and going to the aquarium, and walking around, we slept so good. The beds are very comfortable and I loved the coolness and comfortable sheets. We had a fireplace in the room which added a touch of atmosphere on a cool coastal evening. The next morning we went down for the complimentary hot breakfast. Wow! Toast, bagels, scones, muffins, fresh cut fruit, oatmeal, and a hot main entree. Our first morning was eggs and potatoes, second was breakfast enchiladas and today's hot breakfast was egg frittata. We were absolutely blown away at the hospitality. In addition, fresh cookies every afternoon. I cannot say enough good things about the Coachman. Front desk staff, Miranda and the team; Sergio and his team for the meals and the lovely gal in the afternoon with a beautiful wine and cheese display. They are extremely attentive and never let the food get low. Cleaning staff, excellent; clean, quiet; we parked our car and didn't move it the entire time. Walking distance to excellent food, drinks, shopping, beach and we hiked to the Mission and back. Rooms were comfortable and clean; fresh linens; lovely bathroom; bath robes; Illy coffee; mini fridge; sauna; jacuzzi. I had a wonderful stay in Carmel by the sea here with my daughter! The room was just beautiful and we loved all the windows and sweetness of the room and of course the fireplace for cool nights was a plus! Since our room was on the street side it could get a little noisy in the early mornings with the trash trucks going by. Also, finding parking spots there could be a challenge at times too. (Those are my only complaints). We LOVED the location of right downtown, breakfast in the morning was amazing, front desk friendliness and afternoon cookies and evening wine and cheese! I felt this town was just one of the most charming places I have ever been and this Inn captured the essence of that! I would 100 percent recommend and can't wait to go back!! A solid 4 stars. The location and ample on-site parking are excellent. We arrived early, was allowed to park on-site and got in a fun walk to some of our fav nearby places. BTW, there is a market a couple of doors away which is a good place for afternoon sandwiches if you want a break from restaurants. It also has snacks, wine, deli, etc. We were there on a Mon + Tues night and assigned a third floor room overlooking San Carlos Street and above the small gathering room next to the check-in desk. We didn't hear any noise during the morning breakfast or evening wine events. A couple of times there was a wee bit noise from the street below, but we liked the "live" feel it represented. Note: There is NO elevator, though staff can help with luggage. Our room was very pleasant and comfortable. Warm colors, tasteful, light decorations. Nice, comfortable chairs and a sofa bed allowed us to spread out. The bathroom was small, but we moved an end table over to the the bathroom door and all was well. Staff was great. Breakfast was fine, especially the highlighted daily dish and the evening wine scene was very welcoming. We will be back! read more

Had an amazing stay here with my family during the Christmas holiday. This place is dog friendly so our puppers could join in on the holiday celebrations! Perfect location in the heart of Downtown Carmel! After researching several inns in the area, I'm glad we decided to book with Coachman's Inn. This was our first time staying at a hotel during covid, and the inn took extra precautions to make us feel safe. There is no room service, but the front desk texted us several times to check in on us, and whatever needed was available via text. Breakfast was delivered in the mornings, which included an egg dish, choice of fruit or yogurt, croissant, and coffee/tea/juice. During the afternoon, there was canned wine and cheese picnic boxes that you could pick up at the lobby. We appreciated the effort and small gestures that most places would've probably cancelled during the pandemic. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. We didn't have any issues with noise as we stayed on the 3rd floor. We loved coming back to relax near the fireplace every night. Only complaint is the pillows are too soft and did not hold up to their shape, but this seems to be common with pillows in most of the hotels I've stayed at. Truly the best location next to all the resraurents, wine tastings, and galleries. The inn is 1 block from the busy Ocean Ave that takes you to the beach. We didn't use our car all weekend and walked everywhere. We even walked to Carmel River State Beach (25-30 min) which we enjoyed more than the Carmel Beach because it was less crowded. A group of my girlfriends and I went out to Carmel to celebrate one of our 40th birthdays. We had 3 rooms, all of which were great. The layout for each room is just a little different for each spot. If you're on the second floor, you may hear some noise if you have people that walk loudly above you (e.g., the energetic toddler above us), but I feel like that's common anywhere. We stayed in a deluxe double queen room. The room was spacious and very clean. We were on the bottom floor and the noise when anyone walked in the room above was very loud. Breakfast was good. There was a different egg dish each morning as well as fruit and baked goods. Location is excellent. We could walk everywhere. The two different women we dealt with at the front desk were a bit surly. Snacks at wine hour are nice, cheese and veggies with a dip. We got a gift certificate from my mom for last Christmas and thought we use it while the weather is nice. I've never stayed in this hotel before. Our room was cozy and clean. They have free hot breakfast in the morning, wine and cheese in the afternoon. Libby is small but acquaint. Overall, I would stay again in this hotel. You're not that from the busy street but far enough so it's quieter at night. 2 blocks up to the ocean/main road and good walk to the ocean. read more

I found out today I have two sores on my fingers from a bacterial infection I got from trying to fix the flusher inside my toilet in my room last night. Apparently there is no maintenance on call. Ugh. She said I was offered other options which is untrue they told me I would have to wait until morning. At least be honest if you cant run a clean hotel. read more

My husband and I had to come to the Monterey Penninsula for 12 consecutive weeks. During that time we stayed over in Carmel and in Monterey. We tried SO MANY hotel and inns in the duration of that time. It wasn't until we discovered Coachman's Inn that we felt we had found our home away from home. It starts with the phenomenal greeting from the ladies at the front desk. They were all so incredibly friendly and seemed genuinely glad we had come to stay at their inn. We immediately felt right at home. Add to that cookies and a happy hour every evening. Breakfast in the morning was quite plentiful and delicious. The rooms themselves were lovely, clean and cozy - had fireplaces and comfortable beds; as well as a sitting area and bathtubs (if you are one who takes baths, or like us "cold plunge" daily. The location is fantastic in the heart of Downtown Carmel (phenomenal shopping!), and even offers parking for it's patrons. The highlight; however, are it's employees. Super friendly, helpful, kind and professional. Just delightful in every way! Once we discovered Coachman's Inn, we did not stay anywhere else for the duration of our time in Carmel. This should and could be a 5 star inn, given how much of it is done well. The minus is for the musty smell in our room and the very dated decor. We stayed here recently because we like "Four Sisters Inns" overall and the location in town is excellent. Lots of positives - friendly receptionists, excellent happy hour with wine and generous appetizers, equally generous breakfast with many choices (all vegetarian), and good room size. Our King with fireplace on the third floor had a microwave, refrigerator and a Keurig for morning coffee. On the downside, parking is limited, the two chairs in our room were old and soft - you sank down literally - and the musty smell was impossible to air out (and we kept our door open). No air conditioning, just a good sized room fan. Carpet looks old and not that clean. I hate to sound snobby but the decor in the dining area needs to updated and refreshed. It just doesn't measure up to others in this chain. Same goes for the rooms, with the exception of the bedding, which was very nice. Bed was soft but I slept well, so not complaining. As I said, this could easily be a 5 Star with some updates - all the basics are there. read more

My fiancé and I stayed here a couple weekends ago and enjoyed our stay! The rooms were very nice. Upon check in, you are welcomed with a wine and cheese basket which is a nice touch. Due to covid, they aren't doing a traditional continental breakfast, but are instead doing room service. My fiancé and I opted to eat at a local restaurant instead, so I can't say anything about the food, but it's a nice touch. Only negative thing for the hotel is the limited parking. The whole weekend we were there, we were never able to find a spot to park. We had to park in the public parking lot a couple blocks away instead. Wasn't the worst thing, but also not the most convenient. read more

They have free breakfast 8-10am and wine and cheese (and the best chocolate chip cookies!!) available in the evening around 5pm. The room seemed like it was recently refreshed which is nice, but definitely still had some old building charm. I thought I had really done my research when booking our specific room for a milestone birthday & anniversary. The online description said that sink/mirror area was in the room which I didn't want so I called the front desk and asked if there was a separate sink/mirror in the bathroom for more privacy. She assured me that there was a separate sink/mirror in the bathroom. Upon checking in for a 4 night stay, there was no sink/mirror in the bathroom. I spoke to the front desk person and was hoping to switch rooms and was told that she didn't know who would have told me that and that there were no other rooms available. The noise level in the room above us was super loud and we could hear their every move. I guess we all have different preferences for a good experience but if privacy and quietness are important to you, be careful which room you choose. At least the weather was great and the restaurants didn't disappoint. read more

This inn seems to have a leadership issue. I called to make a reservation for a work thing during the summer in January. The inn required 2 night reservation but only needed 1 night. As work would only cover 1 night. Carmel is pricey. I asked for the manager to call me back which did not happen. I was going to ask the manager if she/he could make an expectation that rule as this was a work thing I called again about a week later asking the manager to call me. I did not get a call from the manager. I called probably 3 or more times with the manager never calling me back over roughly a month. Each time I called, I spoke with a very nice front desk agent. She informed me that if I wanted a night stay in the summer, I should book at a different hotel as soon as possible as hotels in Carmel can get expensive in the summer. I told the front desk lady " thank you and I will book a different hotel." I traveled a lot and stayed at 100+ hotels. I never had a manager not call me back when asking especially over a month. I have concerns about how good this inn would be with issue with what the customer service i experined earlier this year. read more

This place is worth every penny. Stayed two nights and was able to do a pre-check-in so all I had to do was pick up the key from the front desk when I arrived. The front desk informed me that they are unstaffed after hours but gave the owners contact info if anything were to come up. They gave complimentary wine, cheese, and crackers upon arrival (available each afternoon of your stay) and give you a form to fill out to choose what you want for breakfast and when you want it delivered to your door. They bring a carafe of hot coffee along with your breakfast in a temp controlled bag. They serve it in resealable Tupperware and give you silverware. Kudos to this place for reducing plastic waste. The room was especially clean and well-stocked (and has a Keurig!). The bathtub had jacuzzi-style water jets. The restaurants and shops are all within walking distance (beach is maybe a 15-20 min walk). Last but not least the staff is so friendly and helpful. They texted me right after check-in to see if I needed anything else. You're able to check out via text and just leave the key inside the room. If I ever visit Carmel again I'll certainly be staying here. read more

Convenient location. Right in Downtown Carmel. You can walk to the stores/ restaurants/wine tastings. If your shopping gets too heavy, you can walk back to the hotel to drop them off. If you need to pee, you can walk back to your room to pee.. Their private parking area is small - so better to check-in as close to 4pm as possible.. But that's ok, once you park your car, you can leave the car there until the end of your trip. Clean room. The hotel doesn't look new. But the room is extra clean. Covid precautions they're doing: 1. Complimentary breakfast. You order day before, and they drop it off in front of your room in an insulated bag. 2. Complimentary afternoon wine and cheese. Also individually packaged, and you pick it up from the from desk. 3. They don't clean the room during your stay. But you can make requests as needed. Like - replacement towels/sheets etc Fireplace is a bonus. It turns on when you turn up the thermostat. Texting. They text you when your room is ready. They text you when you can pick up wine and cheese. You can text them for any concerns/requests and they reply right away. Room 303 gets hot. But you can open the windows to let cool air in. There's also a fan hidden inside the closet. If you want to see the sunset. It's a 0.6 mile walk to the beach (approx 10 minutes). Walk to Ocean Ave, then walk all the way down on Ocean Ave to get to the beach. read more

We spent two nights at the Coachman's Inn for our 10th anniversary, and it was a wonderful experience--even during COVID! The front desk texted us that our room was ready for check-in ahead of schedule, and they checked in on us via text a couple times during our stay to see if there was anything we needed. We had a ground floor king fireplace room, and it was lovely. The bed was comfy, and the room was nicely appointed. The walls here are thinner than I'd like, but it was never noisy enough to keep us awake. The order-ahead breakfast was fantastic, and they were able to accommodate my need for gluten-free. We had eggs benedict one day and a veggie frittata the next, along with fruit, yogurt, and a carafe of coffee. Is there anything more relaxing and luxurious than having a piping hot breakfast spread delivered to your door at the time you chose? I think not! The afternoon wine and cheese plate is a nice touch, especially because so many restaurants close down between 3 and 5 p.m. in Carmel. You can't beat the location! It was a quick walk to all the fun shops and restaurants. The hot tub area looked wonderful (lots of greenery!), but it was closed due to COVID. We look forward to hopping in on a future trip. read more

I recently stayed here with my family and we had a great time! Our room was cozy and clean and all staff were so sweet to us! We have young kids but that didn't phase them, they were so kind. We weren't always treated that way in Carmel so it was nice to see that they didn't treat us any different. The breakfast they served was delicious, the wine and cheese, cookies in the evening were perfect! The location is also perfect. So close to Ocean Ave with all the restaurants and shops in walking distance. The proximity to the beach isn't great, it's a long walk and is best to drive but that doesn't bother us since we have lots of things to carry to the beach so driving is better anyway.
