DO NOT TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE This shop encourages shady practices by mechanics. My Hyundai sputtered and stalled at a stoplight (it's an automatic, so not driver error sadly). It refused to start for a few more days after this so I got it towed. Being new to Charlotte I thought this place would be good to tow the car to due to it's great reviews and how close it was to where I lived. It is not and I have absolutely no idea how it has so many good reviews. Sadly when they investigated my vehicle the following week (not concerned about how long it took, it was during the holidays so it is understandable that it took them a while to get to it) the car started. I guess because of this they decided to not investigate the issue further, note the car still has trouble starting and will likely break down again in a few more days which I assume is what they are hoping... They either did not find the issue out of laziness or chose not to disclose it in hopes my car would be back there for another $150 "Drivability Evaluation". This includes dumping $10-20 worth of fuel cleaner additives down into your fuel. This is so self explanatory it's easier to do than changing your cabin air filter. They charge $78 to clean rear brakes. This includes spraying your brakes with a can of $5 brake cleaner. The only thing they offered me that was priced fairly was the oil change at $66. I rejected all of these services besides sadly the fuel system service and oil change. I was under the assumption that the fuel system service actually included a full service and not just a $20 cleaning solution dumped in with my fuel. I should've asked first which is my mistake. I'm writing this review in hopes other people do not make that mistake and maybe this scam of a business can start operating fairly with the consumer in mind. UPDATE: Owner was "threatened" with a chargeback that he seems to love to overdramatize into something it's not. He seems to have a habit of misrepresenting things, especially his services. I was polite during the call while the associate on the phone was yelling and screaming and hung up on me. Also I didn't have a SO make any reviews about my experience as that is my experience and mine alone. After learning about how your business operates I most definitely took my car and left without coming back inside to ask for you to take another look. I did not and do not trust your business, why would I ask you to take another look at it after seeing how your business operates? Makes absolutely no sense. read more

I cannot in good conscience recommend Compton's Automotive after our experience. We initially took our vehicle in because we knew we needed new brakes. We ended up needed pads, drums, and rotors (which we were fine with). A week after the brake pedal became very difficult to press. We took it back in and, after another $155 diagnostic fee, it was discovered now our brake booster needed to be replaced. We reluctantly accepted and paid. Once we picked up the vehicle, we noticed the wrench (or spanner) light came on. After attempting to diagnose the issue myself online and from driving, I discovered the light comes on only after hitting 2000 RPMs. I found other discussion boards with the same issue after having the brake booster replaced. I called Compton and, even though they were booked up, they took our car back in (I do appreciate that), and (after another $155 diagnostic fee) they discovered now the brake switch had failed. When we went to pick up the vehicle I asked for an explanation as to how this could have happened right after getting the brake booster replaced and was told the two have nothing to do with each other and sometimes "it just happens". We reluctantly paid and I did some research online and found several instances of a brake switch being damaged or misaligned during a brake booster replacement. So, after paying over $3000 dollars ($465 dollars of it being diagnostic fees) we will no longer be doing business with Compton Automotive. read more

I did not go here, however I am an Automotive Technician in TX. I am writing this on behalf on my family who had drivability and potential transmission issues on their 2014 Escape late Thursday. I found Comptons Automotive through ScannerDanner's shop directory. I called 10 minutes after they closed trying to get an appointment for first thing Friday morning. The owner Tom Compton returned my call roughly 20 AFTER they closed to set an appointment for first thing Friday morning with the hopes to get him back on the road if possible depending on the issue/parts availability. However, my father in law ultimately decided to rent a uhaul to tow the escape and continue driving so they wouldn't be late for the moving truck with all their stuff in it. An owner that invests in high quality training such as scannerdanner to ensure that the vehicle gets diagnosed and repaired the correct way the first time. The owner and his team you can tell genuinely cares about people and ensuring that customer gets treated the right way. You will be hard pressed to find better service and generosity than the team at Compton's Automotive. Wish I could give them 10 stars! read more

The brake booster pump on our Prius was going out so I gave them a call to see if they could take a look. I spoke to Stacie and she was able to work me in quickly for them to run a few tests on the braking system. I got a detailed quote for repair back within a few hours explaining what needed to be fixed. This quote was sent via text and included a link where I could authorize repair. I actually thought this method of sending a quote was pretty cool. It was much easier and more efficient than a phone call. I felt the price was fair so I authorized the work. They initially thought it would be ready by noon the next day but it was taking a little longer than expected. Stacie reached out to me in plenty of time to let me know it would be a little later than noon. By 2:20pm that afternoon I had my car. When I picked up the car I spoke with Stacie and the owner. The owner took the time to explain in detail what all was done to the car and reminded me of the warranty they offer on their repairs. I wanted to wait a month to review this shop to make sure everything worked. My car continues to brake as good as new after the repair. Stacie was awesome ,keeping me in the loop of what was going on and answering all of my questions (I tend to ask a lot). I would definitely recommend trying Compton's out if you are in need of a good mechanic. read more

Definitely don't recommend. I made a mistake when I was jumping my girlfriends car due to complacency and being in a rush and not paying close attention to what I was doing and I reversed my jumper cables. I had replaced the battery and a main battery fuse because it would no longer start that fixed the starting issue but I still had codes coming up on my vehicle that prevented it from driving correctly. I didn't have a whole lot of time as I was working a lot of shifts at the airport as an aircraft mechanic so I figured I'd trust them to figure it out quickly and be on my way. Any ways I got a report on all the things that supposedly was wrong. I was told a few fuses were missing and were replaced. I was told the battery was bad even though I had just replaced it and it was brand new. That was an immediate conclusion for me that this company is a scam. Sure enough I declined all the things they had on the report which was many things that had nothing to do with what I needed fixed and Towed my vehicle back home. As soon as I got it back it verified my suspicion. The car cranked right up the battery was in perfect condition. The fuses they put in fixed all the codes that were on there before I sent it there and the car was running just fine. That was all I needed and yet they tried to scam me out of over 1K worth of my money for things that had nothing to do with what I brought it in for not only that I have a code for daytime running lights that wasn't there before I sent it hmmm.. I wonder how that got there. Wouldn't be surprised if they had a hand in it after what I've noticed. I should have just waited and did it myself for a few bucks instead of paying them $145 to replace some fuses but hey you live and you learn. I'm sure there's some legit automotive places out there not many but this one sure isn't they will take advantage of anyone they don't think knows a thing or two about cars. read more

What would you do if you are a single woman, and your transmission fails? Many of my friends wouldn't know who to call. For more than 10 years, I've trusted "my" dealership and that was my first phone call. But the dealership's transmission shop was overbooked and couldn't get to my car for over 6 weeks, and then it would be whatever time it took to do the repairs. That simply wasn't going to work for me, so I Googled "transmission repair near me", and Compton's Automotive was the first hit. I read through reviews and the history of the shop and owner before sending a rather desperate email to them. Stacie "heard" my desperation and immediately called me. God bless her! She helped me get the vehicle towed to the shop, and lent me one of their loaner vehicles. I received a very detailed inspection report with recommended repairs and prices. Though the repairs took longer than anticipated (through no fault of Compton's Automotive,) I was allowed to drive their loaner for the duration and was kept up-to-date on the progress. While my repair was expensive, but I am confident that I received a fair price, and my car is running great. I can't thank Stacie, Todd and the Compton's team enough, and will recommend them for any auto repair. read more

Worked with the Compton's team and Todd to prep our company car for a trip to Chicago The car had been sitting for 6 months due to Covid. Compton's came over jump started the car and executed several repairs in one day. The work was above dealer quality and the pricing was very fair. I made the drive from Charlotte to Chicago and the car a 2011 Lexus drove like it was brand new. The work is as quoted fairly. ( I checked against repair pal). The customer service is what impressed me. I even got a follow up today to ensure I made it to Chicago safely. Compton's is located on Sirus Lane which may be tricky to find without a GPS. Sirus is off of West Blvd [NC- 160], if you're coming from downtown, on your left 0.4 mi passed the intersection of West Blvd. and Yorkmont Rd. You'll pass Billy Graham Highway and the National Guard Base. *The establishment has a clean storefront which intrinsically makes you doubt that you've arrived at car repair shop. There is a smallish sign for AC Delco/ Compton's. [If you'v hit Bynum, you've just passed it on your left.] The detailed directions have been provided because I WANT EVERYONE TO GO TO TODD. 1) TODD IS AWESOME. He is patient, SUPER kind, and quite exceptional at what he does. He replaced an alternator and a worn AC belt on a Nissan Maxima. He gave me an accurate quote of the cost of the repair, called me with an update, and had the vehicle ready in a matter of hours. Also, he advised us (my boyfriend and I) on a car rebuild, taking the time to answer all of our questions even the ones completely unrelated to reason for the visit. . I was very impressed with his attention to the minutiae- he not only answered our repair-irrelevant questions but he thoroughly explained the processes and showed us the tools he would use for those certain processes! 2) CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AN UTMOST PRIORITY at Compton's. Todd provides accurate quotes based on honest assessments and calls anytime there is a change to that quote. The waiting area is large and clean and stocked with FRESH coffee, earl grey tea, hot chocolate, and tasty treats- cookies/muffins. When Todd was ringing me up, I told him that would like to leave a tip and he very politely declined. 3) EXCELLENT CAR SERVICE. Todd is affiliated with parts dealer AC Delco and was able to get the part I needed on the spot! His prices are very competitive and the warranties are great. He charged 139.50 for an alternator switch out (excluding the cost of the part which was 208.18). Most other places charged at least two hundred fo the labor. A "friend of a friend" said he'd only charge 150 but the car wouldn't have been ready until Monday. Compton's is the best all around. You might pay a bit more for parts because you're paying for a warranty on that part and guaranteed service. Compton's works on all types of vehicles, foreign and domestic. When I dropped off my Nissan, I saw a Ford, Chevy, another Nissan, a Toyota, couple motorcycles, and an enormous RV. You know they're good at what they do when they can replace a head gasket on a F550 from a Class A motor home. I had an alternator crap out Thursday and called nearly every place in Charlotte. Todd was the most affordable AND he fixed my vehicle on a day he does not usually operate. I almost wish I had another reason for him to look at my car. I cannot promise that everyone's experience will be as serendipitous as mine, but you can all expect the same quality of service and integrity from Compton's. I generally do my own car maintenance so I have very discriminating tastes when it comes to auto repair. But I can confidently say that I will go no where else. read more

Have used them a few times over the years and was pleased. I work a block away and today had a flat tire after work, called to see if they could plug it for me and was told they didn't have time. After a txt message with the owner I told him I would not leave a bad review but I keep receiving emails asking me to rate my experience so I'm going to. I was quoted $1600 to replace the clutch fan in my Ford F-150.. I went to advance auto and purchased a clutch fan for $208.00 and had it replaced my in 2 hours and I am not very mechanically inclined.. was very disappointed in the quote I received as it felt like I was being taken advantage of because the temperature was in the high 90's and I had no AC. Owner seemed nice when I met him but that is a very large disparity in cost.. especially for how easy the job was. read more

Best mechanic in charlotte! (probably). I haven't been to every mechanic in charlotte, but I have been to a few and this one tops all of them. 1) First, ditch all the negative thoughts that you think when you hear (or read) the word "mechanic." Comptons is not that kind of place. These guys are trustworthy, fair and just plain awesome. When I took my car in, even though the problem wasn't evident immediately, they didn't charge me to look at it, they didn't try to "throw parts at it" just to see if something would eventually work, and they didn't speak to me like I was an idiot. This was after I had taken it to my original mechanic, paid to have him look at it, declined to let him put a part in it that would cost $400, and have him shrug and smile when I asked him if he was sure that would fix the problem. They are also fair. For example, if you have a problem that they think will take an hour to fix but it only takes 30 min, they will charge you for 30 min. 2) Second, the location for me is very convenient. It is close to old coliseum near the intersection of Yorkmont and Tyvola. I work in a business park around the corner so it is super easy for me to drop off my car before work, especially when they offer rides in the morning. 3) Third, they care about their customers. Everyone there is very friendly, they don't talk down to you, they have cookies, working cable (it seems like every mechanic I have ever been to has had a problem with their cable), and a variety of Kurig coffee/tea in a large, clean waiting room. Best mechanic shop I have EVER worked with. Friendly, knowledgeable, and truly act in my best interests. We've been taking our vehicles to them for several years, and I always know when I go in that I will get: * A friendly greeting in a clean and inviting lobby PLUS home-baked cookies & coffee! * Knowledgeable and helpful information and quotes for my specific problem * Expert repairs * Advice that is in MY best interest * A ride to work! A couple of examples: 1. Last September, I brought in my van for repair. The estimate was $2500 for two catalytic converters and a couple other things. Todd (I think it was--may have been Jeff) was very frank with me. He told me that with the miles on my vehicle and its history, I was due for transmission repair in the next six months, roughly equivalent to another $2500. His advice: Take the care to Car Max and trade it in for a newer model before the big expenses hit. This advice meant less immediate cash for them--instead of spending $5,000 with them over the next six months, I have spent less than $500 (newer car, fewer repairs). Long-term, however, it won a lifetime fan & consistent return to their business. 2. Today, I walked in to schedule an oil change and have them look at the air pressure in my tires. They were booked till Thursday unless I could leave it with them (I couldn't), but Todd asked, "Did your tire pressure light come on?" Yes, I said. "Hand me your keys," he said. He had the car taken around immediately, checked tires, refilled them with air. He didn't want me driving even two days on dangerously low air pressure, or damaging my tires. He wanted it right for me. They did it for free. Of course, I'll be back on Thursday for that oil change. :) I recommend Compton's strongly to all my best friends. I usually do not write reviews but my time at Compton's was fantastic and this needed to be shared. Im a nurse and I brought my 2013 Mustang GT California special in to install my high performance brake pads. First off I called and got an appointment the same day which was convenient as my schedule is very labile. I called and arrived within the hour. No longer than 10 minutes goes by my car is already being worked on in the back. The garage was full too. Before they even touched my car the mechanic put on gloves and covered my leather seats and floor mats with plastic. It is hard to find people who appreciate the cleanliness of a car and take the time to ensure my car would be as clean as when I brought it in. As I was waiting for my car, the owner personally introduced himself to me . Very impressed! Now Im looking around and see a waiting room with fresh cookies, a coffee station with anything you can imagine, a flat screen Tv, and a play area for kids. All surrounded by cool car memorabilia and cleaner than can be. 20 minutes goes by and my mechanic (Mike I believe) took the courtesy to come to me and explain the problem while providing me some good education. He found the source of the noise issue and discovered something Felix Sabates ford and no other could identify. This gentleman was knowledgeable, interested in my issue, and actually cares about my car and performing excellent work. I cant tell you how impressed I was after being to MANY repair shops throughout the years. I look forward to my next modification or repair as I know who exactly to go to with real confidence.
