She first had to get an evaluation which entailed getting another set of x-rays done. She has had bad experiences with x-rays and feared the pain of having the piece of plastic in her mouth. Dr. Avilés' assistant, Ardith was very patient with her and didn't force her to quickly go through with the x-ray. My mom was eventually able to trust her and listen to her step by step. Before coming in, my mom had been having a lot of pain in her teeth and had seen a dentist, then an ENT specialist, then another dentist who told her that she needed a root canal on a few teeth. Dr. Avilés took the time to listen to her entire story (even many parts that were irrelevant to him making a diagnosis) and was extremely patient and gentle with her. He explained that she actually did not need to do a root canal and that doing one would not fix the problem in the long run. He offered a simple solution to help ease her immediate gum/teeth pain and referred us to a clinic that might be able to help. I've become used to a lot of physicians and specialists being impatient with her since she explains more than what's necessary and has a hard time understanding English, however, Dr. Avilés and Ardith didn't make us feel rushed at all and was very open to listening to all of her concerns and answering any questions that she had. My mom kept telling me that she thought Dr. Avilés was really good and she almost never says that about any practitioner! She and I could tell how genuinely caring he was and truly wanted her to get the right care for her pain. The previous specialist I saw tried to intimidate me into getting an implant and claimed with confidence that my tooth was fractured, without providing proper evidence. Dr. Thomas concluded that the tooth was likely not fractured and that I just needed minor surgery to have the old root canal redone. She knew it would be quite tricky (I already had oral surgery on it 20 years prior, so it was a very old root canal that was always problematic), but she referred me to the best root canal surgeon she knew. She said that if anyone could do it, it would be Dr. James Reid. She was absolutely right. It's now just over a year later, and I haven't had any issues. I'm so happy that I didn't have to endure the inconvenience and cost of an implant that wasn't needed. Dr. James Reid is simply amazing. He agreed with Dr. Thomas's diagnosis and just did everything absolutely right. The surgery could not have gone any better and his work is outstanding. They are all so warm, sweet, patient, and possess a great level of details about the procedures. When you've been in debilitating pain for a while, these traits are especially appreciated. I learned that the dentists here each have 2 assistants supporting them daily which allows for a pretty amazing level of efficiency. I had lots of questions, and am a curious person in general, so I had lots of questions that Dr. Roberts was able to answer graciously and in-depth. After spending some time listening to her, I felt so at ease with her confidence and knew she was experienced and very competent. Rylie was the assistant, and she had everything down to a rhythm. The engagement and teamwork between the two were pretty astounding as if they were operating with one single brain. It was both fluid and very friendly. From the way they were talking, I can sense they're both just kind and great people- you know, the type of people you want taking care of you. Dr. Roberts ended up having a few extra post-op x-rays done on me to make sure everything was done to her standards. She apologized for the extended time doing these, but I really appreciate and am grateful she is devoted to her craft and care to ensure she's done her best for me. Dr. Gabel said "the best root canal is one you don't feel" and he made absolutely sure I was in no pain at all.
