Compass is a DC area chain and I'm here for it. I get a coffee from them every morning when I'm in DC. The almond butter latte is like unicorns and rainbows in a cup. That's how delicious it is. The mocha espresso latte is freaking incredible too. However, my absolute favorite is the orange blossom latte (iced). It is mind-blowing. They have a pretty great coffee menu and sell pastries and brekkie sandwiches as well. read more

Great experience, super friendly, quick service. Ordered a vanilla oat latte and it is so yummy. The flavor and creamy texture was exactly what I was looking for. Also, the temperature was perfect for sipping when it came out. I didn't have to worry about burning my tongue with a piping hot drink. Aloved that I could just enjoy it right away. I love how there's no extra charge for alternative milks. I got the hot almond butter latte with oat milk and a chicken sausage breakfast sandwich. The latte was super smooth, rich and the perfect drink for a chilly morning. I loved the combo of almond butter with espresso and it was just lightly sweet which was perfect for me. The sandwich was also quite good, with juicy sausage, soft egg, and lightly toasted sandwich bread. While it wasn't my first choice since the egg bites they had weren't thawed out yet, it was a very good alternative. I'd get both the latte and sandwich again. Service was friendly and it did take a little longer than expected for our drinks but that was due to a large order that was placed before ours. read more

Compass Coffee was my go-to spot whenever I visited DC! I had to stop by during this trip to check out their fall/winter and holiday specials. I got the maple latte. The espresso and milk ratio was great but the maple flavors were very very subtle. The Bethlehem bar was packed with a variety of nuts and chocolate on top of a crunchy layer of granola. It was sweet as expected but a little hard to break in chunks to eat. This location was spacious and with great lighting. Staff were friendly on a Monday morning. I'd be curious to check out their other seasonal drinks the next time I'm in town! read more

Popped in to try the Cherry Blossom Specials. The shop was giving samples of their Cherry cold brew with foam and it was delicious. We preferred a Cherry Blossom latte and a Cherry blended drink sans the coffee in that one. Both drinks were delicious! The latte was smoothie and had the perfect ratio of coffee to milk. The blended drink was also delicious even without the coffee. It was thick and milky, almost like a cherry shake. The place was cute and was decked out in Cherry decor because of the blossoms. The store was clean and the staff was super friendly. The service was quick and there was plenty of space to sit and enjoy our beverages. The strawberry machan is one of my favorites, aside from the usual capuchino that I order more frequently. Their coconut iced latte is also a good drink from here. This store is usually pretty busy and most of the people in here are ordering to-go. There's very little seating, and the chairs are cramped together and solid wood which is not the most comfortable. So if you're a digital nomad looking for a place to work, this probably isn't the best place for that. The people working here are cool, and they've always gotten my drink order right. read more

Compass Coffee was fine. Service was ok. The two employees seemed more interested in talking to each other than interacting with me. Once I ordered, this changed. The man making my drink began talking to me a bit about my drink choice. The Maple Cold Brew I ordered was, again, just ok. I was expecting more as the drink ingredients were similar to one of my favorite coffee drinks I've ever had. This one wasn't that. I took a mocha to go for my wife. She enjoyed it a lot. She said "it was one of the better ones I've had in DC". Price wise Compass was comparable to other coffee shops I've visited in DC. read more

This is one of my favorite locations! It's spacious, clean, and well maintained. The crew members are always friendly. They have an array of pastries. Their rewards program is superb. If you don't go there for a few weeks, they pop a $5 reward on your account (free to join and easy to collect points) as a comeback offer. There is a handicap ramp at the entrance. The center of the coffees hop has condiments and trash bins, and there is seating along the window. My favorite spot is the corner nook or the space at the far back, but the area in the rear is next to the bathroom. The bathroom has a coded lock that you have to ask the barista for. They're currently running a cherry blossom beverage that I plan to try on my next visit! If you sign up for their loyalty account, you get the equivalent of five $5 pastries, which is incredibly generous! read more

Love that this spot is just off the blue line metro! Service was fast, and they got the order just as I requested -- a decaf lavender iced latte. For $7 it was a little high end, but the quality was there. There's a good amount of seating inside, and natural lighting. This is a cute, trendy place where I mostly female customers. Lol. Most all the baristas were women in there too! There's two different ordering counters, but only one was being used when I came in the morning. There were lots of people sitting in here chatting. A good number waiting for drinks, but not much of a line. I got the lavender latte with oat milk. It was a little over $5 for a medium. These are flat white type lattes, so they give you an extra shot of espresso which I like. It's got a lot of natural light coming in from all these windows and a neutral color palette. They've got matcha and tumeric lattes. Their menu is pretty small though, but I'm sure people like the simplicity. My latte was pretty good. The lavender has a nice flavor. read more

Compass Coffee is disputably DC's best coffee and indisputably the most expansive. Originating in Shaw, Compass continues to expand across the District including downtown. In recent years, they have opened several locations in downtown DC, but they are smaller shops designed for coffee on the go. That changed with the Eye Street location. This downtown location of Compass is spacious. Yes, it's designed for people who want coffee on the go having cash registers at each end of the coffee bar, but the many tables and two secret nooks of tables proves they encourage people to stay awhile. They make it easy with strong, free wifi. The menu itself is large. They have drip coffee in different roasts, specialty drinks from a nutella mocha to seasonal drinks. Their pastry shelves are full of croissants, kolaches, breads and their refrigerators stocked with yogurt, sandwiches, and other quick eats. The service is fast, efficient, and friendly and the prices are more affordable than other coffee shops (my quality latte was less than $4!). While other non-local coffee shops (I'm looking at you, NYC's Gregory's) are trying to hold a monopoly on downtown coffee, local Compass is already winning....by far! read more

Was in DC for work and decided to stop in since this was in the way. I'm a huge fan of cold brew coffee and theirs did not disappointment. I tried the regular cold brew and the pumpkin cream cold brew. The pumpkin cream cold brew was rich and creamy but still had the taste of coffee. It wasn't overly sweet. The service was great. The baristas were full of energy and welcoming even during a busy morning. They handle morning rushes well and have two lines that take orders and make drinks so even when it looks packed you're able to get in and out pretty quick. read more

I feel like we all treat Compass with kid gloves because they're "one of our own" aka a local coffee chain with a heartwarming origin story. However, that does not negate the fact that the coffee drinks and coffee are consistently just not good or barely acceptable - in flavor/taste, warmth, and pricing. It's overpriced for what it is, and the attitudes of staff at this location in particular are alarming. If you order more than one or two drinks (for a group order), the entire team will roll their eyes, sigh and grumble - even if it's just drip coffee for the whole order, or if you tip heavily. They won't even get you lids - just turn their backs and leave you with like six open paper cups of steaming coffee without a tray and act like it's the world's biggest burden to help you. They really want you to understand that THEY are doing YOU the favor of selling you their mediocre coffee. The only reason I went here so often in the past was out of convenience and what I felt was a moral obligation to support a local coffee chain started by a veteran, but sadly their drinks and snack selection is objectively terrible. Add that bad service on top of that and you just walk away cringing. Just let them self-destruct - don't go out of your way to buy coffee here. read more
