3-3.5 stopped in recently from the reviews - coffee was pretty average for dc. they have many roasts available for drip and self serve, but the roast i selected was not memorable. also tried their espresso - it was on the bitter side, acidic, medium/dark roast, not many positive flavor notes and a plasticky finish - wasn't a fan. read more

Harrar has the best coffee I have found in the DC area to date! They have the usual flavor combinations as well as few unique ones, but most important to me. It is not bitter or overly sweet, but perfectly balanced. The people who work there are also very nice and there are always tables available. read more

I had the opportunity to stop into Harrar for a cup of coffee. The lady at the register was very friendly. The space itself offers a good seating area and you can see them roasting coffee. This coffee shop is a treasure! They serve fresh in-house roasted coffee daily. The drip is excellent. The staff were very friendly and helped me choose the right roast given my flavor preferences. They also serve a nice assortment of baked goods & there's WiFi for those who need it. This is everything you'd hope for in a cozy, small neighborhood coffee shop. Since moving to Indiana, I've had to purchase my whole beans from Harrar. No other coffee even compares. Our favorite is Harrar dark but switch up with their other varieties for a flavor change. The service is 5* out of 5 and the customer service is timely, personally responsive, professional and very respectful. It's a nice Local Coffee Roastery, with a small Cafe space in the front. Coffee is excellent, and they have bags of roasted coffee to take out. The service is generally excellent as they are a small shop, and they are there to serve. It's fairly small, so don't expect a fancy cafe, but if coffee is your thing and you want a nice little quiet place to crash, or a good place for coffee beans, check it out. read more

Do you like coffee? Then prepare to be amazed. I had never heard of Ethiopian coffee and now I can't live without it. There are so many varieties & roasts and the flavor will blow your mind. I also enjoy the pastry selection and LOVE the sambusas. They only have them on the weekends, so get there before they run out. And the family that runs the shop are the nicest people in the world :-) I buy all my beans here now and it's crazy how much different "normal" coffee tastes when you're used to this. My wife and I were traveling the other week and she said "why does this coffee taste so bad?" and I laughed and told her because we are used to the best! I actually stumbled upon this little coffee place while doing some other business nearby. This coffee shop appears to be more than authentic because they have a pretty large selection of different blends, and even a huge coffee roaster right there in the dining room! I like the ambiance a lot! There are plenty of tables and chairs situated inside of the cafe, however only a single table with two chairs outside on their front patio. Today I went for the medium pumpkin spice latte and this drink always has been my favorite at other coffee shops. The lady who helped me and prepared my latte was nice as well. One of these days zi will be bold enough to try one of their specials blends. Did I mention that there are more than a couple? The only downside to this coffee shop is that they close rather early at 2pm every day. I guess the reason is that fewer people drink coffee in the late afternoon or evening. The decor is nice, the staff friendly, the seating welcoming and the beverage choices plentiful. What's more important is that they are a local business in the Petworth neighborhood, and their coffee is uniquely made, not mass marketed. It had a feel good atmosphere with beverages to satisfy anyone's beverage needs- really though, it's about the coffee! Fabulous flavors complemented by your choice of milk- soy is good, but almond is better! It's got that extra flavor of nuttiness to complement the coffee notes. Good stuff for vegans tired of just a soy option! Prices compare and/ or beat many other coffee houses. This is my new fav coffee shop. This is a place that I've been wanting to visit for a minute but for some reason, I didn't know why I hadn't made it happen yet. No I know why. As buna spots go, this was is top notch with the décor. I walked in thinking that I could really post up here and let time fly. I placed my order for Chai and proceeded to Check-In on the Yelp app. Guess what I saw? The cute spot in which I wanted to spend a warm afternoon was closing in quince. It was a Wednesday and closing at 2 p.m. and not reopening later. I checked to see if it must have opened at 4 in the morning and nope. Wowzers! So. I sat with my chai and it was aight. Glad it wasn't too sweet but it also wasn't too special. All in all, the hours thing, it is their business so they can do what they wish so I am not docking stars for that. Being new to This neighborhood myself i decided to try this local coffee place which was so highly Rated. Cute spot on busy Georgia Avenue owned by Ethiopians with fancy espresso brewing machines behind the counter. An Americano will run you around $3 but as I watched the barista make it it appeared that it included two espresso shots with hot water. Perhaps this is how normal coffee is made (?) but in any case it was delicious fresh and most importantly strong! My only complaint was i was in a rush and it appeared the barista was not! read more

I was really excited to finally try out Harrar Coffee & Roastery. It's a very cute coffee shop with some seating within; I saw some of the patrons doing some work, enjoying a cup of joe, both inside and outside. The cafe itself is very clean and cozy, and the barista behind the counter was really nice. They offer freshly-brewed coffee (like the Ethiopian Amaro Organic, Yirgacheffe, Colombia Supremo, etc.), lattes, mocha, chai tea, smoothies, and teas. They also have a pastry section such as baklava and sambusas. Since I'm into seasonal beverages, I saw a sign for a Pumpkin Spice Latte, so I got a cup of that, as well as one sambusa. The latte itself was okay; I liked how it had a nice strong taste, but I wasn't a fan of the 'pumpkin spice' syrup, as it was more sugary than I would have liked. I did like the sambusa, as it had a wonderful crispy phyllo exterior with a spiced-up filling - yummy! I don't know if I went on an off day but I came in on a Fri afternoon and did not have a good experience. It's important to note that the place was completely empty, only one person was working, and it was extremely quiet (I'm not even sure if there was music playing). I asked for a iced chai latte with soymilk, and while I was placing my order I noticed the barista was not very attentive when I was talking or friendly, but wasn't too bothered and just assumed all was fine while I waited for her to make it. I got my drink, thanked her with no response from the barista, and left to start my road trip back to Boston. On the way out, I tried my drink and noticed that it tasted like milk. I had my boyfriend try who is not vegan like I am, and he also said that it tasted like milk. So I went back into the cafe about 15 seconds later, where I said "hello" and she was looking down at some paper and she said "hi" without looking up. A few seconds later, I was able to get her attention to ask if she had made it with soymilk to which she responded "Oh, I didn't hear you" and took the drink from me with a completely expressionless face and remade it (which I appreciated I guess). At some point during that conversation, I said "sorry" because I felt like such a burden and she didn't acknowledge it. After she remade it, I took it and said "thank you" to which she didn't even respond to either. She did not apologize once for messing up the order mostly due to her not being attentive because the place was dead quiet and it was not busy. To make it worse, the chai latte was the worst I've ever had. It tasted like soymilk with 2 drops of chai. I can't believe I had to pay $6 for soymilk and a terrible experience. I'm sorry if this hurts this business but whoever the barista was needs to be retrained or something. read more

This is hands-down my favorite coffee shop in the DC area. Every time I walk in the door, I'm greeted by smiles and a warm and inviting atmosphere. The regulars are really chill and friendly, and the place has a super chill vibe. I love to come and sit to study or read while sipping on coffee or tea. The coffee is really good. It's a little small, but it never gets crowded inside, or at least it never feels like it's crowded. Most people are pretty much in and out, so there's typically always been open seats available. Harrar definitely has a customer for life here. read more

I moved here from New England back in September and have been on a mission to find the best beans in town to brew at home. While I certainly haven't hit every roaster in the city (yet), Harrar has consistently been, by far, the best to date. Small batch, carefully roasted coffees that are rich and complex. I love this hidden gem. Very quiet a low music hums I'm the background and the smell of fresh coffee beans in the roaster lingers in the air. You know they roast the beans in house. This Coffee has Starbucks beat. When I tell you fresh you can see the beans no lie in the bags un roasted.... You can do your work at several small tables and or lounge in the back in the small single chairs by yourself and with a friend. On Saturdays they do an Ethiopian tradition with the roasting of the coffee beans they give you a small cookie and if you wait a small cup in fine China glasses. I love different cultures and how they engage you within the culture. They have sample coffee cups to sip on and they have puff pastries to eat with your coffee... Sit back relax and enjoy. There's something about mom and pop operations that have the polish of a place with much deeper pockets that appeals to me. Harrar is one such place: a fantastic neighborhood coffee shop on lower Georgia Avenue that roasts it own beans (Ethiopian Sidamo beans for their espresso beverages). It's a dark roast; something akin to Starbucks, which may or may not appeal some ($3.30 for a 12 oz latte). And the space? As I said, it has a lot of polish. They've done a great job converting a long, narrow space into a comfy, cozy setting, decorated with Ethiopian artwork and handicrafts.
