Nagadi Coffee Roastery was on my Google Maps list for so long that I've forgotten about it until my friend sent me an Instagram Reels video about Nagadi that went viral in the DMV area. I saw the video and knew it was going to have phenomenal pour overs and espresso drinks. Since the cafe only opens on Saturdays from 8-1, I knew I had to make an effort to stop by despite the 30+ minute drive. Unfortunately, many other people had the same exact idea as me, and the staff was definitely overwhelmed by the popularity. There was a long wait for espresso drinks (at least 30 minutes). All bags of beans were sold out (I'd recommend ordering online and picking up or getting it delivered in the future). POUR OVER / DRIP - 5.35 By the time I ordered, they were out of most pour over options so I tried the Costa Rica Cumbres del Poas since I wanted a fruitier coffee. Fortunately, the wait for pour overs was pretty short, about 10 minutes. The flavors were fruity, but not overwhelmingly so, with a lighter mouthfeel. The pour over was a bit more diluted than I'm used to, but I still enjoyed it greatly. CORTADO - 4 After a 45 minute wait, I finally got my cortado. This has got to be one of the best cortados I've had in the DMV. The espresso was bright and fruity and paired well with the steamed whole milk. It was definitely worth the wait! If Nagadi was closer, I can see myself going 1-2x a month. I'd highly recommend this coffee roaster to any coffee snob looking for high quality coffee in the area. read more

This is literally the best pour-over coffee I've had in years. There's not a lot of seating, and the place is open only Saturday mornings. Still, I would visit anytime to buy another pour-over coffee and sit and savor the flavors. I tried the Indonesian coffee (West Java-Cijapati) on my first visit. Drove 40 minutes to come check this place out. Unfortunately, the experience was immediately soured by how my partner and I were treated by one of the baristas/the owner eavesdropping while we were ordering. When my partner politely asked if they offered flavored syrup to add to their latte, one of the other baristas (who I later learned was the owner) was eavesdropping our order said out loud to another customer "Are you serious?! Flavored syrup? We're not a coffee shop, we're a coffee roaster". While I understand and respect that some cafes/roasters focus on pure coffee quality and prefer not to offer flavored syrups, they could have at the very least waited for us to leave to make that snarky comment. It's one thing to have strong opinions about coffee; it's another to belittle paying customers for asking a simple question. Being disrespectful to a stranger when they're paying at your establishment is beyond comprehensible, especially when it was unprovoked. No matter how good your coffee is, treating guests with basic respect is the bare minimum. I hope this serves as feedback for how easily a reputation can be undermined by a moment of arrogance. read more

Come here for 4 things: the unique espresso, which changes weekly; the pour overs; the beans; and the people, both the staff and the customers. If you want to hide in your computer with a pumpkin spice at Starbucks or at the place that serves hot coffee quickly from a tap then this isn't the place for you. Hidden awesome coffee place as you can easily miss the place. We arrived around 11am on Saturday, and the place was really busy and packed with regular patrons. We got a cappuccino and mocha and waited like 10 minutes as there was only one espresso machine. There were several tables and seats to enjoy drinks here. The coffee was well-balanced, nutty, and a bit sour. The mocha was lukewarm but not too sweet and flavorful. Friendly staff, affordable price, and ample parking in the lot. Only open on weekends. I waited an hour for my coffee but they had so many orders there were over 20 espresso orders in line plus the line of people who haven't ordered. Come and bring a book. This micro-roaster is located in Silver Spring, and they have pickup (on the weekends) and shipping services available. They have Three-region blends, and whole beans from Colombia, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Tanzania. Currently, they have a walk-up window where you can get coffee and loose-leaf tea beverages to-go. You can also purchase direct-trade chocolates from the Dominican Republic and coffee brewing tools! I had their Mocha and an Iced Latte - both were super strong, creamy, and delicious! No hint of any type of acidity or bitterness here! The drinks do take time to be created; I think they ground the coffee for made-to-order drinks! Staff were super friendly, and there's plenty of parking in the parking lot. This is truly a hidden gem. Nestled in a residential area outside of downtown silver spring, this place is really easy to miss but well worth seeking it out. It's clear when you walk in that these folks take coffee very seriously -- a craft. I felt a little overwhelmed as a first timer, but the cashier was patient and helped me figure out my order. All of the drip coffees are done pour over style, which is my favorite. The small yet well appointed shop was filled with regulars. My coffee came out a few minutes later and tasted delicious. If it's your first time visiting, it can be a little tricky to find. It's one of the businesses in a large industrial building with plenty of parking out front. The sign is small so look for the red door instead. Pre-coronavirus, they allowed a few seats inside, but now they do window service. It's strictly just coffee from Ethiopia ("nagadi" means traveler in an ancient Ethiopian language). A latte is $4.15 and is truly just a latte. I asked for sugar and they said they don't have anything besides the coffee. The coffee shop is always open on Saturday mornings only. read more

I recently stumbled upon Nagadi out of sheer luck and what a pleasant surprise! I spoke with an employee who advised me that their pick up window is open Saturday's and Sundays so you can walk up and grab a cup of coffee as you like it. I decided for try their cold brew and purchase a bag of beans to make some of my own cold brew at home! I learned they are a distributor to local coffee shops to include one of my favs, Kefa Cafe, in downtown Silver Spring. This hidden coffee roastery is the best kept secrets of Forest Glen. It is only open on the weekends but totally worth a trip if you are a total coffee snob. We go up almost every weekend to get an iced latte and pick up fresh beans for the week. (hot tip: order your beans for pick up online, otherwise there is a good chance they will run out!). Their pour overs are fantastic, their iced mocha is like dessert in a cup and their coffee beans are freshly roasted and just amazing. Try the Ethiopian or the Columbian- you won't be disappointed! I wish they made bigger drinks as mine is usually gone before I even finish walking home! There is always a little gathering of people and dogs in the parking lot- and tons of regulars- so you know it's good. I visited Nagadi last Saturday since I had run out of beans at home and wanted to try something new. The gentleman at the front (unfortunately didn't get his name), was super helpful and talked me through the different flavor profiles and what to get based on my taste preferences. The coffee tasted great and the staff was very knowledgeable. Logistically for COVID: There's no indoor dining or entry. They take your order and serve you from an open window with a tray. Staff is wearing masks and people waiting do tend to keep a distance with the space in the parking lot and have masks (as far as I've seen). One of the best pour over coffees I've ever had (and I go through phases of being quite the coffee snob). I believe I got the Costa Rica "drip" as they call it (which is a pour over). The interior of the shop is no frills - all the roastery equipment is out and the counter the make coffee at is right in the middle of all the activity. Seating is limited to about 10, split between two tables. They don't try too hard and consequently the vibe is authentic and not overly curated. You will not find the peaceful, hipster coffee shop vibes here. But they do know how to make an amazing cup of coffee. They have a few baked goods from a local bakery available, but the focus is definitely on coffee here. I also spotted some fair trade dark chocolate that looked tempting, but had no price listed. What a great start to my weekend AM!! It was worth taking time to find Nagadi. I tried their espresso and cappuccino this morning. I liked the shot so much that I bought a bag of their 3 bean blend too. =. Ambiance is industrial, tiny (maybe 12ft x 8ft) and clean. It's an open studio coffee bar with a couple of stools, one large table ~6 seats and another couple by the espresso station. It seems to be known to the neighborhood hipsters as they were steadily trickling in. ++ This place is ALL about the coffee! Felix the owner offers tastes via hot drip. The Sumatra cap I had was mellow and smooth. The 3 continent espresso shot was bold and complex. Felix gave me a shot of sparkling water back which I've never tried before. It was refreshing. Something new! ++. The service is awesome! Felix interacts with each customer and he's a bundle of knowledge. There are 2 baristas as well. A complete 180 from the utilitarian chains that are so ubiquitous. Not that there's anything wrong with that ;-). The beans Felix sells are fair and direct trade. He told me that he roasts beans to bring out the characteristics of each kind rather than to tradition...no French roast here. +. Prices for beverages are fair. $2.50 shot to $4 latte. The beans are a little more $8 -$10 per 1/2lb. foil pack. +. Parking was not a problem since they are ONLY open on Saturdays 8am - noon. Do watch out for many, many, many pot holes. I been to a couple coffee places in Baltimore and dc but this was my first one in Bethesda. I was searching up coffee places in dc and nagadi randomly came up. I was ready to go and everything but coming here was more difficult than I thought it would be. They're only open 1 day of the week. That's right, 1 day of the week. And only for 4 hours!! Madness I tell you. My friend talked to the owner and apparently he's trying to be a wholesale seller and that's why he's only open 1 day. I ordered a latte and my friend got a cortado. The latte was amazing. Everything from the espresso, to the temperature of the milk, and even the latte art!! On point! Their latte machine also looks super high tech. They can apparently control how much espresso comes out perfectly and even the exact temperature of the milk. If you love coffee, you should definitely come by nagadi when you get a chance. This place is a nicely hidden gem. A colleague of mine wanted to grab coffee before heading to a conference and I just googled coffee on the way. We found ourselves here, and we actually thought we were lost. The coffee shop is open only on Saturdays and they do have some seating inside. Its literally only coffee, so don't expect any snacks, although they did have some cookies. They also offer a discount for teachers and military which is always a plus. The people working them seem to be passionate about what they do, and overall it was a nice surprise! My colleague got a drip coffee and I ordered a latte. We were definitely happy with our drinks. I was visiting family in the area and was looking for a 3rd wave coffee shop near where I was staying. I popped in and was greeted by Felix and sat down at the bar and decided to get a medley of things before taking home some beans with me back to NYC. They were extremely informative without coming off pretentious and had a fair amount of questions as I make cold brew and pour overs at home on the weekends. They use Hario V60s for their pour overs and didn't get to see what their espresso rig was. As I asked for the check for my espresso, pour over, cold brew and a bag of beans I was surprised that my total bill was under 20 bucks. A coffee roastery that's only open once a week for a few hours, is hard to find, and prompts someone to leave only 3 stars because this place doesn't roast dark coffee? I was ready to leave a 5 star review before even visiting this place! But that would be akin to people who leave 1 star reviews because they had to wait too long for a seat in a restaurant and never even tried the food. This was a great little morning adventure for cups of coffee that rewarded our pursuit. Pretty good! I've only been once but hope to try again. I really appreciate the apparent passion, variety of options of drinks, and roasts. We got an iced latte and a cold brew. I liked my wife's latte a lot more than my cold brew which I found a little bit too acidy; I had asked for a dark roast and was recommended their Sumatran but I don't think I'd get it again, acidy coffee isn't my favorite. With the latte, it wasn't sweetened and other reviews say they don't have sweeteners, I liked it though my wife would have preferred it a little sweet; I will say whatever roast they used in that was much smoother. Final things to be aware of is that they're only open on weekend mornings, a little tough to find (back on a warehouse park) and service was on the slow side. read more
