I would always say I wish they had more locations closer to home so I'm happy to see that they're expanding. Even though they're new, people got wind of their opening. On a Sunday afternoon it was packed. The wait wasn't too long and service was good overall. I tried the lavender haze iced macchiato. I enjoyed it. After a week of scorching heat, and then rain, I was able to walk over for a morning business meeting. Let's check out the menu, shall we? They have a plethora of "signature lattes" - all of which would be too sweet for desert (for me), much less breakfast. There are a grand total of zero instances in which I'd like chocolate or caramel, or chocolate & caramel, in my morning jolt of caffeine. Hard pass. Breakfast sandwiches from $12-$16. Pass. They do, however, have their own house blend coffee, which is solidly a B+. The upshot of spot is the staff, and the vibe. The former is knowledgeable, friendly, and keeps the space very tidy. The latter is kitschy. If you're going to hang one portrait in your spot, (the late) Tony Bourdain is a super-fine pick - James Dean of the culinary world. And why not have a a Mona Lisa with the face of Rowan Atkinson in the loo?? It would have been easy to give this spot 3 stars, but someone's sentimentality/sense of humor matches my own. To wrap it up, the Republic is a fine option if you're out and about. It's perhaps not a coffee destination, but definitely a cool place to hang, have a casual meeting, or bring a date. What made the grilled cheese unique was that they added a tomato-based jam/salsa of some kind that really added a nice fresh acidity to balance out the cheese. I believe they used two kinds of cheese, including brie which is my fav. The cheese was creamy and melty. The food came out pretty quickly and the staff was friendly. What a lovely business to stumble upon while walking near the national mall. I was taking a walk while hosting a few work calls and was so surprised to stumble upon this coffee stand. It was right in the middle of an area that has absolutely nothing else, including very little foot traffic. But, it was only about a block or two from the National Mall and the Bible Museum, so I'm sure the foot traffic may vary by day and time. But upon sight, this coffee stand looked like an oasis. There was jazz playing lightly on some kind of speaker which drew me in. Additionally, the owner/person working was absolutely lovely! I ordered an iced latte (made with Ethiopian coffee) and it was perfect. I'll continue to be on the lookout for where they may pop up next!
