When I worked as a therapist in a previous life, I learned that while most claim that marijuana is not addictive in itself, the dependent behavior that forms from its effects is why most of my substance abuse clients claim it is a "gateway drug" to other, more harmful substances. So consider this: where Starbucks, whether you're ashamed or proud to admit it, was the gateway to coffee-as-a-craft, Nagadi is the equivalent to cocaine. When you come here, you'll find you're not necessarily in a craft coffee shop. You're not even in a local cafe. This is no social house, not a place to do work, nor a purveyor of locally roasted coffee. You're at the tip of the spear, where coffee is the focus and conversation only happens on Saturday. Those who know, know this place. Yelp is still foreign here. You're deep in the Styx now. Located speakeasy-style in an old warehouse plaza off Linden Lane (think brewery, and use the Yelp photo of the sign to find the right door), we walked into essentially a lab and workroom. There is very limited seating, but of course that was by design. In case you didn't get the hint, don't go looking for pastries either. You won't appreciate this place for what it is if you do. Josue and Felix took the time to introduce themselves as soon as my friend and I walked through the door, and spent a few minutes in conversation not only to describe what Nagadi (the shop) is, but also to get to know us. And no prerequisite knowledge here; I felt like I was met at my level, and we built our relationship from there as coffee enthusiasts. My friend and I were offered samples to taste of Finca San Luis from Costa Rica, which complemented well with the complimentary gingersnap cookies. We were also offered seats inside the roasting room, which is normally off limits in other local roasteries, and invited to ask any questions. And yes, anyone can sit in the roasting room. Class. It's no surprise that this place is packed. Enough cannot be said on how endearing the staff are in their hospitality, to feel not as a customer but as part of a group of people who love their craft and search for the perfection in it. I offered them their choice on how I should spread word about their wonderful efforts, whether through word of mouth or by Yelp, out of respect for their craft. The response was, "in any way you feel". If you have even just 32 grams of respect for coffee and the artisans (including the farmers) behind it, set aside some time this Saturday morning. Grab a cup, have a chat, learn something new, leave with a bag of beans. Everything that happens from when you first walk in the door of Nagadi to when you leave, is worth it. read more

Really delicious coffee and the staff are so knowledgeable and friendly! Very limited hours (Saturday mornings only), a bit challenging to find, and it does somewhat crowded. I love that this place isn't pretentious or overly trendy, and just simply sells delicious coffee, beans, and some gear (no food, but they do set out cookies to snack on!). I believe they have tea as well, that's on my list to try next time. Nagadi also has a roastery in Jakarta, and they pride themselves in having close working relationships with the farmers, co-ops, and exporters that they work with. If you like the idea of a place that requires being "in the know," and particularly if you've ever been called a coffee snob, this tiny shop, only open 4 hours a week and not particularly easy to find, might be for you. Nagadi is extremely particular about roasting and brewing coffee. Temperatures, pour-over times, etc, are precise. The staff is passionate about what they do, and very welcoming to newbies. Service is good: coffees are delivered to your table as son as they're ready. They are a Roastery as well as a coffee shop, so bagged beans are also available. That said, it's not for everyone. On my visit, only two kinds of coffee beans were on the menu for hot beverages, and dark roast (my preference) was not an option. Apparently the perfect temperature for cappuccino is barely warm, though the frothing was perfect, with a beautiful microfoam design on top. No diet sweeteners are offered; bring your own or use sugar. No creamers are offered either, though if you ask, they will give you a small cup of whole milk (no other options). The only food is two kinds of cookies (mass market type) generously available free on the tables. People at another table brought their own food, and that seemed to be fine. Table space is limited, so come early. It's a quirky little place that many coffee aficionados will really appreciate. If our cappuccinos had been hot instead of lukewarm, we would probably go back. read more

A great place to drop by for coffee on the weekends. As the name states, Nagadi is not really a cafe but rather a coffee roastery, so they're not set up like a traditional cafe. For instance, they have only one table to sit down at (though they have a long coffee bar with chairs), you are in the midst of all their machinery and giant bags of beans, and their hours are limited to weekend mornings when they're not roasting beans. But the coffee is good and the people are nice, so if you're in the mood for good coffee on a weekend morning, I recommend Nagadi! read more

I have been coming to this place for years. I love ethos of the place, and the owner/manager is really knowledgeable and totally into coffee. However, I am not sure they are producing high quality roasted coffee. I have tried all their varieties, and I am always not quite happy with the resulting cup. I have used imersion and percolation methods, and for whatever reason i have a very hard time getting amazing flavors out of their beans. The coffees are fine, but I definitely dont get the tasting notes written on the bag. In contrast, I can easily get a bag from happymug or some other online roaster and get amazing cups of coffee. It could very well be that I am not sophisticated enough at brewing, though i do use a 200 dollar manual grinder and precise scales to weigh coffee and water. Having said that, my technique might not be good enough to unlock the flavors in their coffee. I would say that the coffees from this place, especially the African ones, are not for beginners. I also tried an espresso brewed at the place and it was very subpar. I will continue to patronize this place, because I live next door and love the concept. However I am wondering if something might be off with their roasting methods. I know some small batch brewers have difficulty achieving a consistent product, hopefully this is something they can improve. read more

I was in Silver Spring visiting family and was searching Yelp to see if I could find a shop brewing specialty coffee in the area. The first suggestion was Nagadi. As this was Friday night and they are only open on Saturday morning I felt it was meant to be. None of the locals had heard of it but the next morning we ventured out and "discovered "it. It is a coffee lovers dream. There are few places where you can get coffee of this quality. There is no where you can get better quality. Felix the owner is friendly, knowledgeable and this for him is obviously a labor of love. He opens his wholesale Roastery on Saturday morning because it gives him a chance to meet his neighbors and share his superb product. Other reviewers have given you the specifics. I noticed that about 50% of the customers (including me) bought beans on the way out. Smart move! I would give six stars if I could because five aren't enough. Absolute gem of a find and the whole reason Yelp exists. Nagadi is a local small-batch commercial coffee roaster that is open to the public Saturday mornings. They feature a variety of beans from throughout the world (the Ethiopian is my favorite) and frequently rotate the selection. Owner Felix and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable, always willing to chat coffee or other topics. A simple operation (again not primarily for the public) where you can get the standard coffee beverages, plus some beans and a smattering of equipment. (No food, but the cookies are free.) Tucked away at the end of a small industrial park, worth the hunt and an amazing way to start a Saturday. read more

When I started drinking coffee a few years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble upon Nagadi Coffee's stall at the Montgomery Farm Women's Market in Bethesda and meet Felix, who has been guiding me through the wonderful world of coffee with helpful advice, his dry sense of humor, and of course great coffee ever since. The farmers market stall is no more, but Saturday mornings at his roastery in Silver Spring are a great time if you love coffee and people who love coffee. He's added Josue, whose skill as a barista is rivaled only by his friendliness, to the team, and if you show up you're likely to meet some interesting people (I met Mark Furstenburg of Marvelous Market and Bread Furst fame once; another time a couple who splits their time between DC and their coffee farm in Colombia and supplied a great coffee for Nagadi) and guaranteed to have great coffee. Tell Felix I sent you and he'll probably give you a free espresso. You'll like it so much you'll buy a bag or three of beans and maybe even join the regular cast of characters.
