A clean, nice looking restaurant with a variety of food options. We tried Com Ga Houston today for lunch and were reasonably pleased with our meal. We were seated right away, and there were plenty of tables in the restaurant. The menu was clear to read and we appreciated the pictures available. I ordered the chicken pho with both white and dark meat. My fiancé ordered egg rolls and the first Beef soup. We weren't asked a spice level, but it came out pretty mild. There were plenty of additions on the table to customize it to your liking. The server also explained to us some things about the meat they serve that might be different than what we were used to. The portion sizes were very large and they have a nice number of lunch specials available that include a fountain drink. I have to say their egg rolls are probably the first ones I've ever had that I truly enjoyed. There was a ton of filling inside and the outside seemed fresh and not too heavy like I've had in the past.

We ordered this from door dash. The dark meat chicken was tender, the rice was fragrant with ginger and cooked in chicken broth and the veggies were fresh. The fish sauce and ginger sauce were well made and good additions to the dish. This is solid for our location. I would come back

    Bahn mi and egg rolls

I ordered my meal during happy hour and via delivery, so I can't comment much on interior and service. I can say everything was packaged very well and neatly! I ordered the combo bahn mi and 4 egg roll happy hour combo! The egg rolls were crispy, hot and the dipping sauce was yummy! A bit extra salty for me, but with the egg rolls, I can get by! The bahn mi was chopped filled with different meats, a hefty serving of the pate or spread, yummy garlicky like sauce and filled with veggies! I might skip on the combo next time as I'm not the biggest fan of all the meat (I'd order a million bahn mis if they only had the pickled veggies!) But overall I was satisfied with my order!

I think I'm going to try everything on the menu at this place as so far everything I've ordered has been fantastic! This go around I got the Dark Chicken / Banh Canh Ga Thit Den This is a thick udon noodle soup with dark chicken. It's got Chicken broth, green, onion, shallot, Cilantro and Vietnamese coriander leaf. Just for fun. I got the special Banh Can topping for an extra $2 which has crunchy mung bean sprouts, additional herbs and jalapenos. This soup is like a cozy hug on a frigid day when you're feeling a little blue. The udon noodles have an incredible light and airy texture and I appreciate how everything is in separate containers so you can put together as much or as little as you like. I always get the egg rolls as they are super crispy and have a nice mouth feel. Once again I doordashed and even when it's frozen outside this food shows up at the perfect temperature.

I got my usual clear noodles with mixed chicken but I didn't feel like having the bamboo today so I opted for the selection without but was confused that I would still get the pork blood. Apparently, the menu needs to be updated. Anyway, I still enjoyed the dish but will order it differently next time. The chicken was also presented smaller and much different than before but tasted the same. I must have ordered the more premium version before. I had also catered chicken for my sister's birthday from them before and everyone loved it. The Agar Agar dessert was not too sweet and had plenty of coconut flavor to it. The service was quick and the server was friendly and helped me sort out the confusion. It seemed to be a bit quiet when I got there around 6pm but people rolled in a bit later. The place still looks bright and clean.

Hainan-style chicken rice with dark meat ($~18).

Instagram strikes again. I would like to come back and try their chicken pho but their Hainan-style chicken rice was so good that I couldn't bear to try anything else. This will definitely be my go-to spot for Hainan-style chicken rice. So many places don't get the rice right, but this place had the lovely chicken flavor throughout the rice. The chicken broth was more on the savory, heavy side rather than thinner and lighter than other places have, which was perfect for me, especially with the AC blasting. Delicious ginger/garlic oil, although could've maybe done with a bit more. Some of their other menu options seem a little pricey, but about ~$18 for dark meat Hainan chicken is expected. White meat is ~$16 and a mix is about ~$17. The banh mi was decent, but the bread wasn't as flaky and crispy as I'd hoped. The meat options on it were good and the carrot and radish were well-pickled. The egg rolls were pretty good in my opinion, but my partner loved them.

The food was delicious and ample portions. Three people dining, ordered an appetizer, salad, soup and two entrees to share. Small plates were brought to the table before the appetizer, however, larger plates didn't come with the entrees. One large bowl of soup, one spoon, and when we asked for bowls, only one was brought. Chicken and duck were in the soup and entree with bones, which is fine, but nothing on which to discard the bones. Again, the food was delicious, the eating of the food proved awkward.

Unfortunately, the way we were treated was completely unacceptable. I will never come back to this restaurant again. My wife ordered the black meat chicken glass noodle soup, but the young man taking our order somehow wrote down bamboo chicken noodle soup instead. The problem is that my wife absolutely hates bamboo shoots. She has never eaten bamboo shoots in her entire life, so there is no way she would have ordered that dish. As soon as the food arrived, I could tell something was wrong. She still tried a few bites just to see if she could eat it, but she simply couldn't. We politely asked a woman nearby for help. I'm not sure if she was a manager, the owner, or just an employee, but her attitude was unbelievably rude. Instead of trying to resolve the mistake, she walked away for a minute or two and came back saying that because the dish had already been made, it couldn't be returned. She said that if my wife wanted the correct bowl, we would have to pay for both bowls. My wife explained that the mistake was made by the person who took our order, not by her. However, the woman kept insisting that my wife had ordered the bamboo shoot dish. My wife even told her that she had never eaten bamboo shoots in her life, so why would she order them? The woman continued arguing with her and became increasingly rude and disrespectful. About five minutes later, she brought out the correct bowl, but she did it with an angry expression, didn't say a single word, and slammed the bowl onto the table hard enough to make a loud noise before walking away. Her attitude made it very clear that she was upset with us, even though the mistake was not ours. This was honestly one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. Mistakes happen, and that's understandable. What matters is how a business handles them.

Definitely my go-to hainanese-style chicken spot!!! I loved the tender chicken. The garlic rice, pickled veggies and soup paired so well! Very fresh and home-y! I ordered the viet crepe and it was soooooo huge. It's also came with a big platter of herbs! It's considered an appetizer but felt more like an entree. Loved it!!! I haven't explored the rest of the menu but so far I'm hooked. Customer service was friendly and helpful. The space is tucked away in the Olathe shopping malls. Def take a visit!

First impression: beautiful decor with a modern design. We ordered duck salad, bean thread noodles with chicken and bamboo, and rice platter with cold meat chicken. The star of all the dishes is the ginger dipping sauce. I couldn't really taste the flavor of each dish individually because of the dipping sauce was overwhelming. It was a good experience. Food was good. Service was okay. However, it was hard to carry a conversation with my company because the music was so loud. And instead of playing modern American music, would be nice to hear soft Vietnamese music. More fitting with the vibe. I would recommend this place to my friends and family. But I don't know if I would go out of my way for it.

    Chicken Pho

I was excited to see a Vietnamese place open up not too far from me. I really wanted to like it better because I normally love a lot of Vietnamese food because it's fresh! I just am not a fan of the chicken or at least the way they serve it. I was a vegetarian for a long time so I'm very picky about meat. Doing this review is hard because some of it is a preference and others might like it but I didn't. I was also excited to see you can get dark or white meat chicken or a combo because I prefer white meat. I decided to get the chicken pho which is $16.99. When the dish arrived, it was a large serving as usual with pho. The problem for me is they literally take the chicken breast and chop it into larger pieces so it has all the skin and ligaments still attached to all the pieces. That is very unappetizing for me due to texture. I had to spend several minutes trying to dig out each piece and pull the skin, ligaments, and dark places off of the chicken. I wound up removing probably close to half of it that I could not eat. The server was really great and explained to us that the chicken is different because it's not the same type of chicken served here normally. She described it as a "running chicken" and thinner. It does taste what I would consider more "gamey" which is not really something I like either. Lol The flavor can be too strong for me. Some may love this but I wanted to let others like me know. I did eat some of it but only a few bites of the chicken. Even the broth was a bit gamey for me. I was able to cut some of the gamey taste by using siracha and the herbs in the pho. My partner got a skillet dish with steak and veggies. They serve it in a skillet. He liked it okay but said it was a bit tough and probably wouldn't order again, it was around $21-$22 for the entree. We also got an order of spring rolls (they are made with shrimp and that's the only option) and they were good. I liked the peanut sauce. There were 2 of them and they were rather small for $6.99. I also got a tea. I wanted to try something but I don't like anything very sweet so I got a tea which came with jellies. I don't remember the Vietnamese name. I asked for it to be unsweetened. It was okay but had an earthy taste and it was $5.25 for a glass of tea with unsweetened jelly pieces. I wouldn't buy it again. The restaurant is new and very clean inside. It has a nice ambiance. The servers and other employees were incredibly nice. I really appreciated the explanations for different dishes. I wish I had liked it better but I think everyone should try it for themselves too especially if you would appreciate the type of chicken they specialize in.

We ordered the pho ga, Hainanese chicken & rice, and the chicken curry -- and wow, everything was so good. Food smelled so amazing, I totally forgot to take pictures when they came out! The chicken & rice honestly blew my mind. Super authentic and took me right back to my time in Hong Kong. Just really comforting and flavorful. The chicken curry was also amazing -- rich and creamy, with that perfect Thai-Vietnamese fusion vibe. The pho ga had a really clean, light broth that felt super homey. Only downside (hence the 4-star)? The pho noodles were way overcooked, which was a bummer. But overall, definitely a spot I'll come back to. This totally makes it into my list of top most-authentic tasting asian food restaurants in the area. Kudos to you, Com Ga Houston!

Very nice restaurant!! Clean and spacious inside. We got the com ga (rice and chicken) and it was delicious! The nuoc mam (fish sauce) for the com ga was a little too sweet for my liking but others might like that. The goi (cabbage salad) was my favorite. We got the special duck cabbage salad and wow I could eat that is every day! Service was good.

Restaurants come and go. I watched one disappear from this very spot years ago. In its place is a Lao family sharing a piece of home with Kansas City. From the moment we walked in, the room smelled of fresh herbs, toasted spices, and slow-simmered broths. Before I even opened the menu, I had a feeling I was about to eat well. Mimi welcomed us like old friends. Instead of rattling off the most popular dishes, she asked what we liked, talked about the food she grew up eating, and guided us through the menu with the kind of pride you can't fake. We started with the Moo Ping and Lao sausage, and both set the tone for the rest of the meal. The grilled pork was smoky around the edges with a savory marinade and just enough sweetness to keep you reaching for another skewer. The Lao sausage was unlike anything I'd had before--packed with herbs and spices and served with crisp vegetables, fresh ginger, jalapeños, and a bright dipping sauce that let every bite taste a little different. For our entrées, Mimi recommended the Pad Kua Mee and the Mee Ka Til. On paper they're both noodle dishes. On the table, they're two completely different stories. The Pad Kua Mee leaned on the quiet confidence of perfectly cooked rice noodles kissed by the wok, while the Mee Ka Til wrapped tender beef in a fragrant coconut curry broth layered with herbs, peanuts, and vegetables that changed with every bite. Then came my first taste of mango sticky rice. Sweet, juicy mango, warm emerald-green sticky rice, silky coconut cream, and toasted sesame seeds. I actually caught myself doing a little happy dance at the table. After we finished eating, Mimi pulled up a chair and shared a little of her family's story. One thing she said stayed with me: every dish is tasted before it leaves the kitchen. Not because they're chasing perfection, but because they want every plate to taste the way their family remembers it. That's when the meal made sense. The food wasn't trying to impress me with oversized portions or flashy presentations. It was trying to introduce me to Lao cuisine the way their family knows it--with care, with pride, and with recipes that have earned their place at the table. I came because I wanted to try Lao food. I'll keep coming back because Khop Jai Der reminded me that the best restaurants don't just feed you. They share a piece of themselves, and if you're lucky, you leave with a story worth telling.

Khop Jai Der is a very small place with tables crowded together that made it difficult to navigate with my current and temporary situation of using crutches. I ordered the Papaya Salad and asked for moderate spice level. What I received looked nothing like my last fantastic salad. Very little sauce, a skimpy amount of papaya, pieces of cabbage that were way too large and a spice level that was way over-board. The female that brought my dish ignored me for the rest of my lunch even though she was sitting at the table next to me talking to her friends. I never got a water refill that I desperately needed and had to get up and maneuver my way to the restroom for napkins after deleting the two at the table because of severe sinus drain. I finally took 70% of my meal to the register and asked for a to-go box. I showed my Hmong co-worker the next day and he agreed that this was not the place to get what I craved. He brought me a homemade bowl of the greatest papaya salad for my lunch today so I finally did find redemption, but it wasn't from KJD. With an almost inedible $20+ lunch, inadequate and dismissive service while my digestive tract was on fire and a claustrophobic environment, I can't find a reason to recommend this place. The biggest let down that I've had in a very long time.
