Ga Tay Cam Carryout - Chicken Hot Pot
Rohan K.

I'm so excited that Vietnam Cafe now has an Overland Park location! We ordered the Ga Tay Cam and Bo Tay Cam (their chicken and beef hot pots with dried mushrooms, green onions, and yellow onions), both served with jasmine rice. The meat, sautéed in their signature brown sauce, is lick-your-lips umami goodness--tender, flavorful, generously portioned, and just as delicious as the original location. If you're dining in, the hot pot presentation is even nicer than what you see here in the takeout containers. When I walked in, I also noticed they offer banh mi for just $7, which immediately went on my list for my next visit. Judging by the number of carryout orders waiting, it looks like this location is already off to a great start. Please support this business--it's one of the best Asian restaurants in the Kansas City area, in my opinion. The staff, who looked like local high school students, were incredibly friendly and even offered us water while we paid for our carryout order, which I thought was a really thoughtful touch. The restaurant itself is bright, clean, spacious, and nicely decorated. It has a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to come back. Rohan approved. Mom approved. Daisy, my golden retriever, signed her paw of approval.

My emptied noodle bowl of goodness - so yummy!

What a delicious happy lunch experience! LOVE the new location. Beef pho hit the spot and I finished all my noodles and beef, broth was just right, no further seasoning needed. Service was GREAT- lots of folks stopping by and checking on me. And did I mention FAST? I was seated and eating under ten minutes.

The Vietnam Cafe in KC is highly rated and award winning, so I was happy to see their new, second location open close to me in OP. My competitively priced $14.75 bún thắp cẩm (combination pork, shrimp and egg roll vermicelli bowl) was served 16 minutes after I ordered at the table, where the service was polite, helpful and attentive during my early, off-peak lunch. It was served in a large 8" x 3" bowl, with a good amount of grilled pork, grilled shrimp, a crunchy egg roll and plenty of fresh veggies on a bed of vermicelli topped with a tasty fish sauce. The payment process was a little unusual. When I asked for my check, the waiter told me my table number and said I should ask for my table's ticket at the counter and pay there. The dining area was clean and freshly remodeled with plenty of natural light, a mix of booths and tables and a fountain drink dispenser but no background music. I also noticed a drive-thru outside, which is currently closed. Overall, pretty good.

It was kind of a cluster, if I'm being honest. I went at a weird time for a meal, 3pm, and the house was full. The floors were a mess, and it was just chaotic. Service was very kind, but all over the place. They were very apologetic about the wait, which was 10 minutes only from ordering to a plate on the table. I got the bun rieu--could have been seasoned better but there was a ton of meats/tofu in the soup. Normally I just leave whatever I didn't eat, but I actually wanted to take mine home. I had to go get my own to go cup, and payment isn't done at your table, you gotta get up to the register and give them your table number. Glad to have a solid Vietnamese place closer to home.

Bun bo hue

My husband and I came here for dinner hoping to fix a craving we've been having for a while! We were excited to hear the new location opening, so we thought we would give it a try. I ordered bun rieu and the broth was very rich but it was more on the sweeter side. I'm not used to my bun rieu being sweet so it was different for me. Definitely had to lime it up. My husband ordered bun bo hue and the broth was more on the bland side. It looked savory but we were kind of disappointed it wasn't. Had to request shrimp paste for it. The service was great. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. The ambiance was welcoming. You can tell they are still trying to get everything together. Definitely recommend getting curtains because when the sun is shining, it will shine in your eyes in some seating areas. Next time we visit we will try the banh xeo and com platters. Hopefully no disappointment when we do!

Grilled beef bún, no onions.

I know pho is the more popular Vietnamese food, but I am always in search of bún, that amazing salad/noodle/grilled meat concoction. Vietnam Cafe's bún is excellent. Fresh cut veggies, delicious sauce, hot meat. Service was friendly and very prompt.

Khop Jai Der Lao & Vietnam - Pad Kua Mee w/ Shrimp

Khop Jai Der Lao & Vietnam

I used to live just around the corner from 119th and Quivira…read more If Khop Jai Der had been there back then, leaving the neighborhood would've been a whole lot harder. Restaurants come and go. I watched one disappear from this very spot years ago. In its place is a Lao family sharing a piece of home with Kansas City. From the moment we walked in, the room smelled of fresh herbs, toasted spices, and slow-simmered broths. Before I even opened the menu, I had a feeling I was about to eat well. Mimi welcomed us like old friends. Instead of rattling off the most popular dishes, she asked what we liked, talked about the food she grew up eating, and guided us through the menu with the kind of pride you can't fake. We started with the Moo Ping and Lao sausage, and both set the tone for the rest of the meal. The grilled pork was smoky around the edges with a savory marinade and just enough sweetness to keep you reaching for another skewer. The Lao sausage was unlike anything I'd had before--packed with herbs and spices and served with crisp vegetables, fresh ginger, jalapeños, and a bright dipping sauce that let every bite taste a little different. For our entrées, Mimi recommended the Pad Kua Mee and the Mee Ka Til. On paper they're both noodle dishes. On the table, they're two completely different stories. The Pad Kua Mee leaned on the quiet confidence of perfectly cooked rice noodles kissed by the wok, while the Mee Ka Til wrapped tender beef in a fragrant coconut curry broth layered with herbs, peanuts, and vegetables that changed with every bite. Then came my first taste of mango sticky rice. Sweet, juicy mango, warm emerald-green sticky rice, silky coconut cream, and toasted sesame seeds. I actually caught myself doing a little happy dance at the table. After we finished eating, Mimi pulled up a chair and shared a little of her family's story. One thing she said stayed with me: every dish is tasted before it leaves the kitchen. Not because they're chasing perfection, but because they want every plate to taste the way their family remembers it. That's when the meal made sense. The food wasn't trying to impress me with oversized portions or flashy presentations. It was trying to introduce me to Lao cuisine the way their family knows it--with care, with pride, and with recipes that have earned their place at the table. I came because I wanted to try Lao food. I'll keep coming back because Khop Jai Der reminded me that the best restaurants don't just feed you. They share a piece of themselves, and if you're lucky, you leave with a story worth telling.

The food was excellent and the servers and staff are so sweet. I would love to try the entire menu…read more We both got noodle dishes that were just the right spice level.

It didn't take me long to order, I had to go with the namesake dish. It was hands down the largest pad Thai I have ever had. I ordered it hot and it was perfect! The décor was beautiful, soothing and perfect for a Saturday night with Lofi music playing in the background. Our initial server (the short haired one)'s responses made us feel inconsistent and unwelcoming because another server came to our table after taking the appetizer order as said the previous one sent her - we went through the whole spiel about our shellfish allergy and placing order again and then we saw her serving everyone around our table - So Weird! Appetizers - We got the fried spring rolls and chicken tom kha soup to start. The rolls were very crispy filled with lots of veggies and pork served with a sweet red sauce. Tom Kha soup was delicious as well - very hearty and spicy. Main dishes- we tried the tiger cry fried rice under Ann's favorites section of the menu, basil chicken fried rice and chicken Thai green curry. The tiger-cry fried rice was my favorite. We usually see tiger cry beef served as an appetizer but having that as a main course was so much fun to explore! The beef in it was tender and flavorful. Basic chicken fried rice and Thai green curry were more of classic dishes. The basil fried rice was cooked well with enough seasoning. The curry was delicious too and went well with the rice. My only preference was for the curry to be thicker and creamier because the sauce was watery. Overall, the meal was very flavorful and satisfying. I will be back to try more!

We got Vietnamese iced coffees, crab rangoons, spring rolls, and pho. The pho I had was rich in flavor for the broth. You can tell it was boiled for awhile. The noodles were cooked perfectly! Not soggy at all and had a good bite to them. The veggies were nice and crisp too! Crab rangoons, I have no ill words for them. Just a standard rangoon that was well made. Not oily at all. Their peanut sauce that went with the spring rolls was thicker than the places that I am used to. I must say I actually prefer this locations peanut sauce over the ones I have had in my home state. 10/10! Will come again.

The staff was doing the best they could to keep up with the crowd, and everyone was friendly and courteous. The food was good overall. The pho had a good, flavorful broth, and the hủ tiếu mì khô was also well-seasoned with good flavor. They accidentally forgot our sweet potato dish, but with how busy they were, we decided not to wait any longer. The cà phê sữa đá was excellent--the balance of strong coffee and sweet condensed milk was just right. The bánh mì was decent as well. The bread was perfectly toasted and had a nice crust, though I do wish it had a little more meat. Overall, it was a good lunch experience. I think I'd come back after the crowds settle down a bit so we can try more of the menu at a more relaxed pace.
