The reason for 3/5- I am so disappointed. Out of all the times that I have eaten here I have never been disappointed. I usually come here for dim sum, and it is upsetting for me to say that my husband and I should've chose somewhere else to eat for dinner. For dinner, we ordered fried rice and chow fun. Those two main entrées were okay. You can't really mess up those two fillers at an Asian restaurant. We ordered scallion pancakes- they came out soggy and soft. Not even crispy like how they usually are. The flavor wasn't there either. If I wanted microwaved scallion pancakes, then I would've bought them from the store and made them myself. My husband ordered the short ribs- they were bland and tough like rubber. It had a funky taste to it that he couldn't describe and he had to force himself to swallow it because he didn't want food to go to waste. I ordered the chicken feet- this is one of dim sum's signature dishes and I am so upset I didn't even get to enjoy one of the dishes I always order. It was dry and the flavor wasn't there. The service was fantastic. They checked in on us and made sure our water was filled. The timing of the food coming in and out was fine. The ambiance was inviting. Dim sum is my go to... but we don't have a good one near me in Omaha so when I travel it's the first thing I look for. I've been to ABC multiple times and we always love the food. Get there early there is always a line, but they take your phone number and text you when they have a table ready. Small un-assuming casualrestaurant with sweet servers and fast service. Try the Xiao Long bao they're great we also got streamed shrimp dumplings crispy spring rolls and custard buns. Have to come back to try more things. read more

Not sure how I don't have a review posted about the ONLY restaurant that carried me through my second pregnancy truth be told. When I say the staff here knows me, when I dine-in to order they pretend to ask what I want knowing it's the same thing every time LOL jk they are doing their job probably hoping I try something new seriously if I could give out an award for consistency this restaurant wins by a landslide. Although, I could write an essay on how amazing this food is I will do my best to compile all of my experiences into one review. I'm the type of customer who looks for 2 things at any business I go to consistency and good customer service. ABC is the true definition of tradition being passed down from one generation to another. From the family working together when you dine in or carry out, to the food ALWAYS tasting the same every single time. The atmosphere is quiet and close, their set up encourages "family style dining". The staples for me that I recommend everyone try at least once: cucumber salad, beef short ribs, abc chicken, Singapore style rice noodle, chicken dumplings, chicken & shrimp fried rice, and the new additions egg & minced beef fried rice! My FAVORITE thing about ABC is that they will accommodate and make things how you want them to be made. If you don't like onions in a dish no problem, they won't be there! If you can't eat shellfish, but still want to try the dish without it, they will make it happen. I think this might be the best Chinese food I've ever had in KC. The only thing I didn't love was the crab rangoon. We sampled several dim sum items and the rest were amazing including soup dumplings, pork potstickers, BBQ por bao buns. We had 2 entrees. The beef chow fun was soooo good. The beef was literally so tender it melted in your mouth. The black bean chicken was fine but next time I'd try something else. Will definitely be back!!! read more

4 stars because this is the best KC has to offer, but in overall dim sum experience, probably a 3. Mostly gave a 4 because it surprised me that this existed. Water spinach was great and had plenty of garlic. Red bean pastry was perfect to end off the meal. Chicken feet were fine. Shrimp ha kao was also pretty decent. The shu Mai were okay but wished they were a little bit more seasoned. We also got soup dumplings, not pictured, but this was the worst dish of the ones we ordered. It tasted and looked like the pre made dumplings that Costco had made and sold a while back - this was pretty disappointing that it wasn't made fresh in house. Overall though, pretty good service. Not the typical dim sum experience with the carts - you order just with traditional menu. One of my favorite places in KC, an oldie but a goodie. Don't expect much from the inside-think small local Chinese place, but that's exactly what you want. Al la cart dim sum items made to order, served up hot and fresh. Some personal favorites include the shumai, bbq pork buns, scallion pancake, and salt & pepper pork chop. For dessert we love the sesame balls and the mango pudding! Really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They do fill up quickly and don't take reservations, but worth the wait! I love coming here. The food is very authentic Chinese dishes. I love their cucumber side dish and shu mai. My favorite dish of theirs have to be the salt and pepper tofu (so soft inside), chicken wings, and their Peking pork chops along with the fish roe soup. I continue to come to abc cafe because I like the family style format of abc cafe. You don't have to do it that way but it allows me to try a variety of items because there is a lot to choose from. I feel like this was a format I was used to growing up and it's hard to find it exactly like this as places try to appeal to a modern format. The food is always consistent and comes out fresh. We ordered about 8 items as this was our first time and wanted to try a good variety. The food: We were served the wrong items initially, so I gave the other table their items. The squid in the Seafood fried rice was very bland and rubbery. The XO Wings tasted like plain fried chicken, which was disappointing as I was expecting salt and pepper flavor. The salt and pepper squid was tender, but the flavor was all salt and the squid was not crispy. The egg tart was soggy. The beef shank pancake was way too sweet, too much hoisin sauce and the portion was small for $10. The beef chow fun was my favorite dish we ordered, it had a good wok hei flavor. The crispy shrimp wonton's were good, very crispy and the flavor was good. The Service: Most of the staff did not speak English (Spanish), so it was hard to communicate. Ran out of water twice and had to wait on the other staff who didnt care to check in and had to wait for the check as the staff all took a lunch break at the same time. When we asked for a box the older asian waitress refused to give us a larger box for some odd reason. She was adamant that we could only get one large box even though we had two full entrees and extra rice to take home. Idk, it was frustrating. Our bill was near $100, why is it taboo to give a large box and why make a big deal over it? Will not be returning and will not he recommending to family, friends or colleagues. read more

Tonight, I placed a delivery order and went all-in on dumplings. The fried vegetable dumplings were amazing--flavorful and crispy--but they didn't look particularly appetizing. Don't judge a book by its cover, though; the veggie dumplings were absolutely delicious! Unfortunately, the Steamed Shrimp Dumplings didn't live up to expectations. Each dumpling contained just a single shrimp wrapped in a delicate dough, but the shrimp's flavor was so overpowering that I couldn't manage more than one bite. The taste was just too strong for me, and I won't be ordering those again. It's small inside with a counter area for staff to stand behind and a connecting kitchen. It was all clean and well set up. The menu was awesome as it had a ton of variety and photos of every item. 4.5 stars for the restaurant. It is located on the south side of Kansas City. We were searching for restaurants serve dim sum and this one show up. We got the pork and shrimp siu mai to start. It with four. Great to share. The shrimp dumplings we have is a pan fried. I recommend this dish because it does not have in Tampa. The next dish is seafood dumplings, I think is a bit smaller. Taste is there. My wife has the chicken feet and she said is very good too. The next dish is the xiao long Bao. This is good soup dumplings. The only comment I have is the chef's need to separate each dumplings with space and don't let them glued together. The last dish we have is the curry beef puff. I highly recommend this dish. I believe they are only open from Thursday to Sunday. They seem to be quite popular. It's was a Sunday afternoon and there was a 15-20 minute wait for a table. Looks very small from the outside and is very small on the inside.... Wife and I decided on this place after we'd heard how good they were. I unfortunately was not impressed by the items we ordered. The green been with "minced pork" was very salty but came with a bowl of rice which helped out but I've been trying to cut my carb intake down so actually wasn't very helpful health wise‍. I first dined here a month ago for a Yelp elite event. It was so good, that I came back a few weeks later with a friend. It didn't disappoint. This time, in addition to trying some faves from my initial visit, I also tried the crab Rangoon and the Singapore noodles with shrimp. It was so delicious that I ate the entire portion. Dim sum: a buffet but at your table. I love coming here for their excellent food. My favorites are the beef short ribs, the sui mai, the pretty red bean buns and the sesame balls (not too chewy). Today we tried the eggplant which will be ordered again for sure. Every item on their dim sum menu is top notch. I have orders off their non dim sum menu- but rarely - not because the food is not equally good but because - did I mention mini buffet? Prices are super reasonable. Service is attentive and quick and everything is freshly prepared. You'll rarely go with a new or filled beverage or empty plate uncleared. We were lucky enough to sample many of their greatest hits tonight. For a group of four, we left full for the week lol! My favorite is always the XO turnip cake. However, close seconds are the spare ribs, cucumber salad, and chicken feet (not ordered tonight though). The speed at which the staff moves is amazing. I am never waiting for a drink refill. Less than two minutes for the first of the dim sum to come out. We loved the pork pot stickers, siu mai, and chicken dumplings. We felt the portion size of the scallion pancakes was a little small but it is also one of the cheaper options. Don't judge the place from the outside: a little hole-in-the-wall in a strip mall of sorts. The inside is as small as you might think, but it's always filled with patrons. Unfortunately, some of their dim sum dumplings were sold out and they also have a pretty limited dim sum menu. I've had ABC Cafe twice, once dining in and once to go. The dining in experience is good. The dining room is not terribly large so you'll get the opportunity to see many different dishes other than your own. The staff are nice enough and do a good job of talking you through the menu items when prompted. My partner and I tried some small plates and we had some real winners. This place is known to be more authentic than your average Chinese around here. They offer an extensive menu that you will likely find something you enjoy from here. I tried the shrimp fried rice, beef shank pancake wrap, and the salt and pepper soft shell crab. The fried rice is good, but was definitely lacking salt, which was an easy fix. It was not too oily as well. The soft shell crab was pretty good, but I wish the breading was a little more crispy. The added cabbage with the fresh jalepeno is definitely needed to make the dish more light as the breading could be considered pretty heavy alone. My favorite thing to try was the beef shank pancake wrap, which reminds me of beef pho all wrapped up in a nicely fried pancake wrap. On the inside is beef shank, hoisin sauce, and cilantro, making this a great accompaniment to any main dish. This was not my first visit here, but my favorite dish I have had from here was the beef chow fun. I wanted to try something different this time, but I wish I would have gotten it again. It is one of their more popular dishes out of their many, and I recommend trying it if you have not! No complaints on the service. The place is pretty small and I would likely just order takeout from here rather than dine in, but do not mistake this place for your typical fast food American Chinese.
