This was my first visit to China Star and it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. I ordered the General Tso's combination plate which comes with a side of pork fried rice and an egg roll, plus a side of crab rangoons. The portions were definitely large enough for more than one meal. This is just your classic neighborhood takeout done well. I ordered the General Tso's with the mild spice level, and it was just right with a flavorful sauce that had plenty of sweetness and just enough heat. The crab rangoons were great, and while the pork fried rice was good, I'd probably swap it for a different fried rice next time mainly because pork isn't my favorite. The only miss for me was the egg roll, which had a smoky pink meat inside that was kinda weird. Everything else though, was exactly what I wanted; comforting, dependable Chinese food that I'd happily order again. read more

We spotted this gem because they were still open late, and I am so glad they were.They were so kind when I came in even though they were about to close. Inside is small enough for a few people to sit but it's mostly setup for takeout. The portions were huge for the price. I always check the crab rangoons first at a new Chinese place and yes, I ate one in the car. It was everything you want with no soggy or burnt bits at all. I struggle to find my favorite dish, Beef with Mushrooms, and China Star actually has it. Not sure why it's tough to find, but I am so happy they have it and it is so incredible because I have such a limited diet and I can actually enjoy this particular dish. My partner enjoyed his fav General Tso's and the fried rice was so good he ate it before anything else! The fried rice alone had more flavor than most places we visit. The flavors of each dish are strong and not bland like you sometimes get with Chinese takeout. Pickup was smooth and the parking could not be easier. Honestly I don't know how this place gets such great reviews. Yes, there was a lot of food, which is what the lady on the phone told me. We ordered one of the chefs specialties, sesame chicken. It wqs average at best given all the options out there. On par with Panda Express or the Costco Chinese food in the frozen section. I'm pretty sure this was from a bag so not my kind of place. I understand there are about 100 things on the menu and that should be a clue that nothing is special. Your review brought me through the door so this is my opinion. Two stars only because it was a HUGE portion but not great food, average. The inside looked like people would hardly ever eat inside. Booths with stuff stacked in them and boxes stacked around. My Hubby and I stumbled upon this hole-in-the-wall eatery last week. We were lost to begin with, so I was concerned with being able to find this place again. Honestly, we were both shocked how good this place truly is! Tables with Booths setting, clean countertops and tabletops everywhere. It is a busy place, and this was on a Thursday well after 6pm. He had Teriyaki Chicken, I had Hawaiian Chicken, white steamed rice and we shared a plate of Crab Rangoon with a veggie roll. This is one of the freshest made-to-order Chinese food we have had in a very long time! The Proprietor was very sweet and listened when I said I had food allergies. Our food was table-side within 10 minutes...it was hot, well seasoned and scrumptious! Being later in the evening, this place is hopping busy! I used to eat here all the time when I was younger, glad to see it's still around and that the same family still runs / owns it. Portions and food are good. This was my first time getting an egg roll and noticed the meat inside was pink, the few bites I got in before noticing were good. The service was pretty quick. We called it in for pickup and it was ready in 10 minutes. The prices are pretty fair and the servings are pretty big! I wasn't crazy about the chowmein or sweet and sour chicken. The sweet n sour sauce is really yummy. I would come back and try another item on the menu. read more

We grabbed takeout here this weekend after reading the great reviews! We had a coupon which brought our grand total to $20 bucks! Orange Chicken with Orange Peel: 3.5/5. This was a flavorful dish and the chicken had a nice crunch to it. However, I wasn't a fan of the actual orange peel so I picked around it! Egg rolls: 2/5. I can't describe why they weren't great, but they tasted different than a normal egg roll. They weren't super fresh and the filling seemed off. We ended up throwing them away. Sweet and sour chicken: my husband had no complaints. Pretty good portion size for what you pay! Every combination comes with rice and an egg roll. Crab Rangoons: 10/5! Saving the best for last. I am definitely the type to judge my entire experience off of the crab Rangoons at a Chinese place. For $5.50 we got 8 and they were big. Not the dorky kinds you get sushi places or even Thai places. These had a nice crunch and tasted fresh. They heated up great in the air fryer as leftovers. Overall, I would come back but I have had better Chinese. I don't think I would dine in as the building smelled like they were having some sewage issues. Great for takeout though! read more

I've been going here for years! It's by far my favorite Chinese take-out place in the KC area. The portions are LARGE and the food is always delicious and hot. Some of my favorites are General Tso's chicken (orange chicken was a little too orange flavored for me and this is a good balance), beef and broccoli, and the lo mein. The crab rangoons are some of the best in town, and I would always recommend getting and order of those. The lunch deal is one of the best things they offer. It's so cheap for all that you get. I love this place, and it's always great to support a local family run business!! read more

My family and I's go-to Chinese takeout place. Food is available for pickup very fast. Delivery is prompt too but it can take longer on the weekends, which is to be expected. Their fried dumplings and crab rangoons are to die for. The "large" portions contain a lot of food. We usually get two large entrees and a small rice, which feeds a family of four and there are leftovers. They are conveniently located off 18th St. expressway and I-35. Ordering and pickup was easy. The Combination Moo Shu is really, really good. Easily the best moo shu pancakes I've had anywhere. They were large and flexible. Even after refrigerating the leftovers, the pancakes were still pliable the next day instead of hard and brittle. I also ordered the sesame chicken and it was just okay. I had ordered something from here years ago - probably general tsos or something similar and didn't like it. I hadn't been back again until recently. So, while everything on the menu might not be great, I'll definitely be coming back here for the Moo Shu and for the authentic spicy mustard. read more

My dine-in lunch experience was excellent. The #29 chicken with mixed veggies lunch special ($6.45 from 10:30 am - 3 pm every day) was served with a smile just six minutes after I ordered at the counter. The portion sizes were generous, and everything was delicious. The chicken was plentiful, white, and tasty, there was a good assortment of veggies, the fried rice had a nice smoky flavor, the sauce was flavorful without being salty, and the egg roll was delish. The service at the counter was cheerful and friendly, while the dining area was clean and basic. All orders were placed in to-go containers, and the utensils were small and plastic, but I'm okay with that at this price point. Background music would have been a nice addition. I'm thinking 4.5 stars and rounding up for the very good value. read more

This is my GO TO for Chinese takeout food. I've been coming here for 9 years since moving into the neighborhood. I find the staff polite and appreciative of your business. Even when the kitchen is busy you ever wait long for your food. First up tonight was Crab Rangoon. You get 4 in a small order and the filling is plenty and a lot more than what you'll experience in a buffet. For my entree I ordered the chicken lo mein. My container was filled to the top with noodles, cooked with onion and a load of chicken. They don't scrimp on meat in their dishes. I'm always able to get 2 meals out of my order of food. read more

I ordered China Star for delivery. It arrived fast and my food was still very hot. Too hot for the kids to jump right in. So that was awesome. I ordered sweet and sour chicken, Hunan veggies, chicken lo mein with no vegetables. Food was delicious. Chicken was fried perfectly. What made this experience completely awesome was their in house spicy mustard! I requested extra spicy mustard. It came in a little cup and it was fire. Got my nose running several times. Wow. I am not known for having a great memory. For some reason, I had in my mind that someone had warned me about staying away from this place. Well, if they did, they must have been trying to keep it for themselves. We used to have an office in this same section of buildings, but I never ate here because I was afraid to. I still don't know why I had that impression. Anyway, last night I took a wrong turn and instead of turning around I decided to go this way. I am ALWAYS in the mood for Chinese food so I thought I'd pull in there and see how bad it was. You know what? THIS PLACE IS AWESOME. It's not a dirty, grimy place like I was expecting. It is nice and clean. They weren't terribly busy, but busy enough. The family business had two of their children working and both were very polite and very professional. It's nice to see them learning responsibility and the value of good customer service. You could tell the owners appreciate return business. Some customers in line after me were greeted by name and the owner came out to speak to their children before he headed out with a delivery order. I was excited to get home to try out my order. The crab rangoon was really yummy. It was crispy but not overcooked like some places. You could still tear it into pieces without it shattering into shards of wonton crumbs. The sweet and sour sauce was fantastic. You could actually taste fruity flavors in it... it didn't just taste like red sugar. Their hot mustard was amazing! I can deal with hot mustard in packets if I have to, but they give you little sides of real hot mustard and it is just right. I am saving the leftover mustard for anything else I eat this weekend. I also got Mongolian Beef. It was good. It is labeled as spicy and I can handle pretty spicy foods. It didn't seem terribly spicy to me, but if you are not able to handle spices you'd might need to be careful. If nothing is ever spicy enough for you, you might want to ask for extra spicy. They add zucchini to theirs, which is an ingredient that doesn't appeal to me, but I'm okay with picking around the few pieces. Portion size was great; plenty for leftovers. If I had to make one critique it would be not having an option of fried rice or steamed rice. They give you steamed rice, which I know many people prefer. I'm not much of a fan of steamed rice and would have preferred simple fried rice with my meal. I ate a bit of the steamed rice, the taste was okay (I find many places have rice that tastes like dish soap) but the rice was a bit overcooked and came out in globs of mush instead of grains of rice. I think they prepackage the steamed rice in the take out containers so I might have gotten one that had been sitting around for awhile. It's okay because I wouldn't have eaten much of it anyway. In all, I think their prices are great...exactly what is competitive in the area, but with a great portion size. They have a clean, comfortable dining room and friendly staff. I will certainly be back many times. I guarantee it. read more
