Not too busy and the dish I ordered not complicated, but it took 30 minutes to serve the Cashew Chicken. Was the food served hot? Yes. Did it taste good? Yes. Vegetables were cooked and not mushy. The ginger sauce is divine. Service was adequate--I think my server could see my frustration at the long wait for food. I know this isn't "fast food," but waiting 30 minutes seems a tad excessive. Let me preface by saying I am Chinese and grew up eating really great Chinese food in California. So I really really wanted Bo lings to be good and I had high hopes because I've had their dim sum before and it was pretty good. So we came to try their normal dinner and it was a little disappointing to me because there was definitely an American flare to it. The shu mai didn't taste authentic. The honey walnut shrimp and chicken wasn't the best either. Chicken was dry. Flavor was good though. The beef chow fun was great, I do like that one. And all the dumplings were decent as well . I think just the overall taste was not as authentic as I hoped for. But if you are an American and can't tell the difference, I think this place would be great! I do love me some Asian cuisine and I can get picky on some styles, so for me, Bo Ling's consistently presents a great option. For what it's worth, my general Bo Ling's experience is takeout, but even in-house is a solid choice. The General Tso's Chicken is my standard go-to, sweet, spicy, and big chunks of chicken. Add in some steamed broccoli that is usually perfectly done and some white rice and it's a great meal. The Family Style Tofu is another winner, blending veggies with a savory, non-spicy sauce over slices of tofu perfectly prepared. Both come as portion sizes that are generally more than enough and make for excellent takeout leftovers. The weekend dim sum cart is a huge pull for Bo Ling's. Steamer baskets with pork dumplings, shrimp wraps, veggies and more make their way around the restaurant and never disappoint. It's only on Saturdays & Sundays around the lunch/post-church hours and it is always a huge hit. When you add in appetizers (their crab Rangoon never misses) you can be sure you'll walk away full. Pricing definitely reflects the value. We usually drop $30 or so on a couple of takeout entrees, and with the portion size and the quality, that's a winner. There is likely a lot to the menu that I haven't even explored, but Bo Ling's always scratches the itch I need when we hanker for this kind of cuisine. read more

I've been dining at Bo Lings for years and feel it important to let management know that customers can tell when items have been substituted and the taste is not the same. The rice that you are using is not as flavorful or fragrant and has lessened the quality of your menu items. Customers pay a premium to enjoy your offerings, but when quality is compromised, we will go elsewhere. I am so sad to no longer dine at Bo Lings after being a loyal customer for 25 years. read more

The meat is noticeably higher grade, and the sauces are flavorful and generous. I really don't understand the low rating and negative reviews. The Crab Rangoon is the best, with tasty duck sauce that's better than any I've had elsewhere. General Tso's and Crispy Beef both excellent. This is a solid spot for standard fare Chinese-American food. The menu is solid with all the staples you might expect and a few surprises mixed in. I have only ever eaten lunch here, so I can't speak to the other meal times, but this is a safe spot for lunch with colleagues if you are in the mood. I generally get General Tso's Chicken or Mongolian Beef, and I can't complain. If you go here for lunch, you can expect it to be loud, with many people eating and conversing. However, you can generally get it without much of a wait, so that's a plus. The building feels dark and somewhat old-fashioned, but the seats are comfortable. The staff has always been attentive when I come. The place offers regular meals and catering, so you may see your server jumping from taking orders to carrying out food to a car for a carryout order. Don't worry; they'll come back for you soon enough. This place is nothing to "wow" yourself with, but if you want tasty Asian fare that is at least less prepackaged than a Panda Express, you will do fine here. read more

If you are looking for a nice place to get your typical US "Chinese" food, this is a nice place to do that. It was a comfortable clean restaurant with very efficient and friendly servers and variety on the menu that should please pretty much everyone. I was happy to get a good cup of hot and sour soup. That take-out staple has inexplicably disappeared from many menus. and some places that offer it just throw some chili oil in their egg drop. Nah. This was exactly what you expect with the white pepper heat, vinegar sour, tree ears, bamboo shoots, etc. I also ordered their Vietnamese style spring rolls and Szechuan dumplings. The dumplings were what are normally called wontons, and they had made a nice soy and chili oil to serve them in, piping hot with some spinach wilted on top. I liked them. 2 disappointments - First, the Vietnamese style spring rolls were a huge pile of still warm rice noodles so the split piece of boiled shrimp and a tiny strip of some sort of pork were lost in the pile of rice noodles and lettuce. If these are ordered infrequently, they probably should just drop them from the menu. The other big disappointment was that Yelp still describes them as a dim sum restaurant, and old pictures would seem to indicate that, but they are not. There is a label on the menu for dim sum and it offers steamed pork buns or shumai, nothing else. I passed up my normal dim sum spot in Overland Park to come here so that was a bummer. I could have been eating stuffed eggplant, chicken feet and sesame balls down the road. But thanks for the hot and sour soup! Hit the spot. read more

We went for a weeknight early bird dinner and to redeem a "be our guest" certificate. We were seated immediately because we went so early and there were no other tables, so our server gave us not enough time to consider the menu/did not give a drink menu before taking drink orders. We took our time perusing the menu and made it pretty clear that we were not ready but were continuously visited by over-eager/likely bored staff. We ordered 3 traditional dishes that would have complemented each other perfectly but the kitchen was out of fish (our server didn't know and told us after) so we had to make a substitution without looking at the menu. Our ordering felt incredibly rushed. We ordered shrimp spring roll appetizer, beef chow fun (maybe the worst I've had in the city), szechuan wonder with chicken, since fish was unavailable, and szechuan dry fried green beans. Food came out quick and was slammed down on our table because there was no between-course bussing, so the server had to find a spot with limited hands. I had no offer to refill my bar drink and my water was completely empty while we supped on 2 szechuan dishes before I received a refill. Our chow fun was clumped together so several of the ho fun noodles were still white and the dish was bland. The green beans were very average for the dish but exactly what one would expect them to taste like. The szechuan wonder is probably the best version of 水煮鸡 you can find in the city. Kin Lin has one but it has a thick corn starchy sauce unlike what you would find in China. Once our food came, we were not checked on much except a shout from 4 tables away. Overall, the food was above average for an American Chinese place but you can get much better elsewhere. It's the service that really deterred from the quality of this meal. read more

I have been to this Bo Lings location for lunch a few times. We have not had to wait for a table so far for lunch. I get the lunch special and I think it's a good deal. It comes with soup, crab Rangoon, and the main dish. (I like to swap the Rangoon for an egg roll) The General Tso's is my favorite and it comes with enough that I can take some home and have it for lunch the next day as well (it tastes good reheated as well). I will eat here again and I do recommend it to others. read more

I'm not usually one to complain, but my experience at this Bo Ling location was awful. I came to visit KC and requested to go to Bo Lings as I enjoyed the food and service at the Plaza location. This location was completely different! It took 5 minutes for our waitress to come to our table and we didn't have any silverware until we requested it with our appetizers. Then I ordered a Pina colada and asked the waitress did I accidentally get a virgin one and she stated she would get that manager. The manager James came to the table and stated that he was the one that made my drink and it's perfectly fine the way he made it and walked away. The waitress was the one who came back and asked if I wanted it stronger after we finished our meal and asked for our checks. I decided to drop the issue as I don't like to cause trouble, but the way he treated us and the fact that we had to get other waiters to get our waitress multiple times I wouldn't advise anyone to go to the location next to Oak Park mall. read more

used to be good , we used to be repeat customers and spend way over $100 , we don't buy from this place anymore because their food isn't fresh anymore, they reduced the portions size alot for when you order and still overcharge. This was our first time eating at this restaurant, but not our first time eating Dim Sum. We had 6 dishes. Of the 6, we were disappointed in 4. For the most part, food was ok, the service could have been better. The wait staff was a bit disorganized. We had to inquire on the whereabouts of our food, condiments, napkins and check. We felt some of the items did not justify the price. Traditional DimSum is served by heated carts. They no longer do this since Covid so the experience is not the same. To be fair, I have relocated to the area from a densely populated Asian culture and am accustomed to traditional DimSum( with carts and a larger variety) as opposed to an American version. Overall, it's worth a visit if you are trying it out for the first time. read more

We arrived at 11:30 a.m., June 30th, for lunch. We were seated by 11:33, there were maybe 4 other tables seated, they were either eating or being waited on. We waited until 11:44, with no water delivered, no greeting, no commitment for a server to come by shortly, etc. So we got up to leave and there a hostess that watched us and said nothing as we left. I've been here before but last time I came and asked for fried rice they said they didn't offer it like what? Chinese food and no fried rice? I was so thrown off. However, all the rest of our food was so good so we decided we would come back again and give it another go. Well here we are.. a couple years later and everything including our fried rice, was soooo good!! My husband loved their crab Rangoon both times we have been here and I got an egg drop soup because I was a little cold in the a/c. We came up with the perfect combo to share, pork pineapple fried rice and Beijing beef! I was nervous because the menu said it'd be spicy but it wasn't. It was however, soooo delicious! Very nice atmosphere and courteous servers. Not a big crowd on a Saturday night but that made it more pleasant for us. Food always good and is brought out hot and quickly. It has been several years since I have been here, but it was sooo good back then I stopped in when I was back in town. What a difference time makes! The best General's chicken ever has turned into small, dry, tough and chewy pieces in a sauce so watered down it barely had any flavor. The rice was undercooked and hard. My guest had the same experience with their entrée. This place is not cheap, $40 for two small servings. I will not have to worry about spending that much again at this establishment. read more

Food came out fast but after what we got I wish they would spent more time on my dish. We picked two dishes, general tso's chicken which was excellent but my dish was badddd... Bo Ling's has by far been the best, most consistent Chinese food in the KC metro area for years. Excellent flavor and quality, they hit the mark on so many classic American-Chinese dishes. Great, non-greasy crab Rangoon, awesome Mongolian beef, fried rice, all potstickers, and so many more. The Plaza location offers authentic and tasty dim sum on Saturdays and Sundays. They have good hot and sour soup, but the egg drop definitely needs work. Too congealed. read more

Warning to anyone expecting authentic Chinese Food...this is not it. FIrst of all, when the roast duck came out, it looked dry and unappetizing. Also, the roast duck dish was FRIED which undoubtedly made it dry and tough. You could totally tell it was fried just by looking at the skin! Skip this dish, it's not as advertised! Plus too, it will cause you to think differently of this place from the get go. Fried noodle dish was decent and the only thing that made the dinner memorable. It was quite tasty! It came with not only chicken, but beef and shrimp too! Beware if you have a shellfish allergy though. I don't remember it saying that it was cooked with shrimp in it, but that's the way it came out! The flavor of the sauce was different from other chinese places I've been too, but it definitely made the dish. If I were to eat at this restaurant again, I would get this. We also tried their crab rangoons because of previous yelp reviews that said they were worth the price. Well, I'm not sure if we just didn't get a good batch or what, but I have definitely tasted better and didn't have to pay a dollar each. All I could really taste last night was the fried crispy outside, which of course is a good sign, but only cream cheese of an inside. Not to complex of flavors I must say. But oh well. Another thing, not everything on the menu is offered at this location. Service was a four star but food brought my rating of this place down. When I go to Bo Lings, I know that we will get a delicious well cooked meal and fast attentive service. If you want a good familiar chinese dinner in a clean updated dining environment, this is probably your best bet in KC. Menu is mostly the americanized chinese but there's nothing wrong with liking General Tso or empress chicken. They do offer pad thai, teriyaki salmon, and singapore noodles (kind of a curry spiced noodle dish, one of my favorites) so you could categorize them as pan-asian as well. Oh, If you like fried rice they usually do a very good young chow fried rice too. The only thing I would like here are a few authentic Cantonese dishes on the menu. The location on the Plaza had at one time a few hot pot dishes on a secondary menu but I don't think this location ever did. read more
