Whoever General Tso is, I ate his chicken.

I do love me some Asian cuisine and I can get picky on some styles, so for me, Bo Ling's consistently presents a great option. For what it's worth, my general Bo Ling's experience is takeout, but even in-house is a solid choice. The General Tso's Chicken is my standard go-to, sweet, spicy, and big chunks of chicken. Add in some steamed broccoli that is usually perfectly done and some white rice and it's a great meal. The Family Style Tofu is another winner, blending veggies with a savory, non-spicy sauce over slices of tofu perfectly prepared. Both come as portion sizes that are generally more than enough and make for excellent takeout leftovers. The weekend dim sum cart is a huge pull for Bo Ling's. Steamer baskets with pork dumplings, shrimp wraps, veggies and more make their way around the restaurant and never disappoint. It's only on Saturdays & Sundays around the lunch/post-church hours and it is always a huge hit. When you add in appetizers (their crab Rangoon never misses) you can be sure you'll walk away full. Pricing definitely reflects the value. We usually drop $30 or so on a couple of takeout entrees, and with the portion size and the quality, that's a winner. There is likely a lot to the menu that I haven't even explored, but Bo Ling's always scratches the itch I need when we hanker for this kind of cuisine.

    Sichuan "dumplings", spring rolls

If you are looking for a nice place to get your typical US "Chinese" food, this is a nice place to do that. It was a comfortable clean restaurant with very efficient and friendly servers and variety on the menu that should please pretty much everyone. I was happy to get a good cup of hot and sour soup. That take-out staple has inexplicably disappeared from many menus. and some places that offer it just throw some chili oil in their egg drop. Nah. This was exactly what you expect with the white pepper heat, vinegar sour, tree ears, bamboo shoots, etc. I also ordered their Vietnamese style spring rolls and Szechuan dumplings. The dumplings were what are normally called wontons, and they had made a nice soy and chili oil to serve them in, piping hot with some spinach wilted on top. I liked them. 2 disappointments - First, the Vietnamese style spring rolls were a huge pile of still warm rice noodles so the split piece of boiled shrimp and a tiny strip of some sort of pork were lost in the pile of rice noodles and lettuce. If these are ordered infrequently, they probably should just drop them from the menu. The other big disappointment was that Yelp still describes them as a dim sum restaurant, and old pictures would seem to indicate that, but they are not. There is a label on the menu for dim sum and it offers steamed pork buns or shumai, nothing else. I passed up my normal dim sum spot in Overland Park to come here so that was a bummer. I could have been eating stuffed eggplant, chicken feet and sesame balls down the road. But thanks for the hot and sour soup! Hit the spot.

Long life soup and crispy shrimp rolls

I always come to Bo Lings when I'm in Lenexa for work and they never disappoint. I decided to get the Long life soup and it was delicious. The portion was definitely worth the price. My server was quick and very friendly. Will always come back.

Beef chow fun, szechuan wonder, dry fried green beans

We went for a weeknight early bird dinner and to redeem a "be our guest" certificate. We were seated immediately because we went so early and there were no other tables, so our server gave us not enough time to consider the menu/did not give a drink menu before taking drink orders. We took our time perusing the menu and made it pretty clear that we were not ready but were continuously visited by over-eager/likely bored staff. We ordered 3 traditional dishes that would have complemented each other perfectly but the kitchen was out of fish (our server didn't know and told us after) so we had to make a substitution without looking at the menu. Our ordering felt incredibly rushed. We ordered shrimp spring roll appetizer, beef chow fun (maybe the worst I've had in the city), szechuan wonder with chicken, since fish was unavailable, and szechuan dry fried green beans. Food came out quick and was slammed down on our table because there was no between-course bussing, so the server had to find a spot with limited hands. I had no offer to refill my bar drink and my water was completely empty while we supped on 2 szechuan dishes before I received a refill. Our chow fun was clumped together so several of the ho fun noodles were still white and the dish was bland. The green beans were very average for the dish but exactly what one would expect them to taste like. The szechuan wonder is probably the best version of 水煮鸡 you can find in the city. Kin Lin has one but it has a thick corn starchy sauce unlike what you would find in China. Once our food came, we were not checked on much except a shout from 4 tables away. Overall, the food was above average for an American Chinese place but you can get much better elsewhere. It's the service that really deterred from the quality of this meal.

    General Tso's Chicken

I have been to this Bo Lings location for lunch a few times. We have not had to wait for a table so far for lunch. I get the lunch special and I think it's a good deal. It comes with soup, crab Rangoon, and the main dish. (I like to swap the Rangoon for an egg roll) The General Tso's is my favorite and it comes with enough that I can take some home and have it for lunch the next day as well (it tastes good reheated as well). I will eat here again and I do recommend it to others.

This was delicious with our soup

I usually come here for dim sum, and it is upsetting for me to say that my husband and I should've chose somewhere else to eat for dinner. For dinner, we ordered fried rice and chow fun. Those two main entrées were okay. You can't really mess up those two fillers at an Asian restaurant. We ordered scallion pancakes- they came out soggy and soft. Not even crispy like how they usually are. The flavor wasn't there either. If I wanted microwaved scallion pancakes, then I would've bought them from the store and made them myself. My husband ordered the short ribs- they were bland and tough like rubber. It had a funky taste to it that he couldn't describe and he had to force himself to swallow it because he didn't want food to go to waste. I ordered the chicken feet- this is one of dim sum's signature dishes and I am so upset I didn't even get to enjoy one of the dishes I always order. It was dry and the flavor wasn't there. The service was fantastic. They checked in on us and made sure our water was filled. The timing of the food coming in and out was fine. The ambiance was inviting. There was a sense of urgency and I appreciated that.

Their menu consists of a lot of dishes, and some are quite unique .. you don't usually see items like bird's nest dishes at most Chinese restaurants around here except for maybe Bolings. Me and my husband visited on a Saturday night around 8 pm and really devoured our meal. The menu can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but you honestly can't go wrong with stir fries at any Chinese restaurant. For appetizers, we ordered chicken egg rolls, which were hefty and filling. For the main course, I ordered the chicken in black bean stir fry, and my husband got the shrimp Kung Pao chicken stir fry. We paired both with steamed rice. The black bean chicken was rich and earthy, with that deep, slightly funky flavor from the fermented black beans. It was very umami, salty and complimented nicely with the fresh, crisp vegetables and well-cooked chicken. I really liked it. The shrimp Kung Pao was spicy and tangy, with perfectly cooked shrimp (the fried shrimp covering was chefs kiss) and crispy veggies. Overall, we really enjoyed the food. The egg rolls were about $4 for two pieces, and the stir fries were around $17+ each. The portions are quite large compared to other places in the area, so the pricing seemed reasonable. For 2 main course dishes your bill could easily reach up to $40. Otherwise, The restaurant was clean, the staff was kind, and service was quick. It also wasn't too crowded when we visited. I would rate the service 4/5, mainly because we had to ask for silverware, condiments, and tissues separately. The food, though, is definitely a 5/5. Highly recommended! I will definitely return to have more dishes like beef chow fun, the soups and last, but not least BIRDS NEST!!

We came as a party of seven and spent roughly $300 on dim sum and additional dishes, giving us a broad look at the menu -- unfortunately, very little of it was enjoyable. The noodle dishes were outright bad. Both the seafood pan-fried noodles and the beef chow fun were so aggressively salty that they were completely inedible. These are staple dim sum dishes that should be comforting and balanced, yet they tasted like someone dumped an excessive amount of salt into the wok, ruining any chance of flavor. The shrimp noodle roll was especially shocking. We ordered three plates, arrived early before the restaurant even opened, and the dishes came out cold -- not lukewarm, not barely warm, but cold. In over 40 years of eating dim sum, I have never been served a cold shrimp noodle roll. This alone speaks volumes about the lack of care or quality control in the kitchen. The char siu bao was equally disappointing. The bao itself was poor quality, and the char siu filling looked old, dry, and unappetizing, as if it had been sitting around far too long. When the egg tarts arrived, it became clear this meal wasn't going to improve -- the crust was underbaked and doughy, completely missing the crispy flaky texture that's expected At that point, it wasn't even worth taking food home. We left without packing anything because so many items were simply not edible. If there was any positive at all it was the har gow and the shrimp and chive dumplings -- the only dishes that met a basic standard. If you decide to come here, those are likely your safest options. The service was very good and attentive, which honestly made the food even more disappointing. Another strange note: this is the first dim sum restaurant I've ever visited that charges for tea by the cup. Everywhere else I've eaten dim sum -- and that includes China, Hong Kong, Macau, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago -- tea is either complimentary or charged by the pot. The tea service here felt oddly executed and out of place. I wasn't expecting high-end dim sum in Kansas, but I was expecting fresh, properly cooked, warm food. We drove many hours specifically to try this restaurant, which made the experience even more frustrating. Overall, despite good service, the food was unacceptable. This visit was a complete letdown, and I would not return or recommend it.

We ordered the Chicken with Cashew and the General Tso's lunch specials, both came with soup and a side. The cashew chicken was seriously incredible. A lot of places overload this dish with veggies until it turns into chaos, but this one was balanced with the right mix of ingredients and is easily one of my new favorites in KC. Only bummer: hardly any cashews. Still delicious, but I wanted a little more cashew love. Crab rangoons were hot and crispy with a solid filling even after a bit of a drive home. The fried rice had great flavor, and the steamed white rice was bouncy and soft, not that kind with crispy dry edges. Both soups were spot on, and THANK YOU for including wonton strips. A lot of places skip them and it really can make or break egg drop soup for me.
