Bo Lings is something of a Kansas City tradition and since I was a little kid it's been one of my favorites. When I was a kid it was because I loved Chinese food and this is where my parents would go, and now as an adult it's mostly just nostalgia. Over the years I've found other places I like just as much, and some places in town that do certain dishes better, BUT there is just something about Bo Lings that feels comforting and that je ne sais quoi will certainly keep me coming back. This location in Overland Park is the closest to my house so it's the one we order from the most. They recently got into the delivery game which reintroduced them to me now that I'm in my kid era and very much too tired to strap two little kids into the car to pick up food when I can pay to have it come to me (I know I know kind of lazy but that's life!). At any rate, we ordered from here earlier this week and the moo shu was exactly how I remembered, I love that they make their own pancakes in house and they still are IMO the best ones in town, and the crab rangoon still slaps. Something else I love about Bo Lings is that they do a good job at staying consistent across all locations, which I imagine is not always an easy feat. I truly wanted to love Bo Ling, but this was one of the most disappointing dim sum experiences I've ever had. We came as a party of seven and spent roughly $300 on dim sum and additional dishes, giving us a broad look at the menu -- unfortunately, very little of it was enjoyable. The noodle dishes were outright bad. Both the seafood pan-fried noodles and the beef chow fun were so aggressively salty that they were completely inedible. These are staple dim sum dishes that should be comforting and balanced, yet they tasted like someone dumped an excessive amount of salt into the wok, ruining any chance of flavor. The shrimp noodle roll was especially shocking. We ordered three plates, arrived early before the restaurant even opened, and the dishes came out cold -- not lukewarm, not barely warm, but cold. In over 40 years of eating dim sum, I have never been served a cold shrimp noodle roll. This alone speaks volumes about the lack of care or quality control in the kitchen. The char siu bao was equally disappointing. The bao itself was poor quality, and the char siu filling looked old, dry, and unappetizing, as if it had been sitting around far too long. When the egg tarts arrived, it became clear this meal wasn't going to improve -- the crust was underbaked and doughy, completely missing the crispy flaky texture that's expected At that point, it wasn't even worth taking food home. We left without packing anything because so many items were simply not edible. If there was any positive at all it was the har gow and the shrimp and chive dumplings -- the only dishes that met a basic standard. If you decide to come here, those are likely your safest options. The service was very good and attentive, which honestly made the food even more disappointing. Another strange note: this is the first dim sum restaurant I've ever visited that charges for tea by the cup. Everywhere else I've eaten dim sum -- and that includes China, Hong Kong, Macau, Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago -- tea is either complimentary or charged by the pot. The tea service here felt oddly executed and out of place. I wasn't expecting high-end dim sum in Kansas, but I was expecting fresh, properly cooked, warm food. We drove many hours specifically to try this restaurant, which made the experience even more frustrating. Overall, despite good service, the food was unacceptable. I can't remember a time that I wasn't going to Bo Ling's (so probably at least 25 years) but I finally went there for dim sum on a recent Saturday and I definitely have mixed feelings. Food wise? Absolutely delicious. Service? Truly dreadful. We got there when it opened since my friend and I knew it could get busy. And there were people queuing up at the door. Several Chinese families were there (always a good sign for an authentic experience). But we were seated within 3 minutes. I've never eaten in at this location (I've always gone to the one by Oak Park Mall) but it's an attractively decorated space though there are some weird boxes piled up near the bathroom hallway. Anyway, as we were seated, we were asking if we wanted anything to drink, and given the menu to order a dim sum. If you've never been to this style of eating, you receive a paper printed menu with all of the menu items on it and you just check a box on the ones you want. They'll take the menu away and with the first food item they'll sit down the receipt so as foods ready, they can come through and check off the dim sum that they've already delivered. I should start my food and service descriptions by saying that the food was delivered very quickly and was all very good. We started with the chicken spring rolls. I thought it was really good. But I'm just so used to duck sauce that I was missing a little bit . Then came the cucumber salad - I ordered it because I so enjoy the one from ABC, and while this was different, I think I may prefer it to the ABC one. It's a little sweet and a little spicy and it was just so delicious and I was so delighted that I was able to take some home as leftovers. Then came the shumai, which I thought were good but nothing to write home about. We got the steamed barbecue pork buns, which we waited too long to eat so they kind of got cold by the time we got to them and they weren't as good. The filling was good, but this is where ABC beat Bo Ling's dim sum. Shrimp Toast was my highlight of the meal. A bit adventurous for us since we had no idea what to, but I thought it was delicious and would definitely order again. And then we closed out with the soup dumplings. Also really good, but I didn't love that. They were served in those little metal containers, it made them harder to eat. All in all I thought the food was fabulous and I would happily go back. It is more expensive than ABC, but you are a little better spaced out so you aren't elbow to elbow and having people chase you out. And with that let's switch to the service, which is where really if I were basing it on service I'd give it like a 2 or 3. As I said, we received right away we got our food and drinks right away, but then nobody ever came to check on us. We had to ask to have our drinks refilled and at a certain point, we ended up setting our glasses at the very edge of the table to try to get someone's attention, because they just kept walking by us. I don't think anyone truly checked on us at all without us flagging them down and once our food was all done and our glasses were empty, we just sat there waiting for someone to ask if we wanted our check. Eventually, we did flag somebody down and they said they'd go get our check and it took them at least another 5 minutes to get our check. I get the dim sum is more of a casual dining experience, but it was weird to me that nobody even tried to sell more dim sum or try to turn the tables. I know that it was less busy than it typically is on a Saturday, but it was still very odd. And we ended up sitting there at least half an hour longer than we'd intended to just because we couldn't get people's attention. Anyway, if you weren't worried about service, the food is really good. And generally Bo Ling's is one of the best Chinese restaurants in town and I'm always happy to go there. read more

Pardon, vegan crab rangoons?! Crab rangoons used to be a favorite and go-to when ordering Chinese food so it was a treat to finally try a vegan version a decade later. I believe these are a unique offering at the OP location (by Oak Park Mall) so it's best to call ahead and confirm availability day of. But there are actually several vegan options - I ordered the yummy veggie stiry-fry with vegan general tso sauce. This place does not respect your time AT ALL. The worst service I've seen in many years. 35 minutes longer than estimated for one chicken dish with fried rice, and the woman at the takeout counter without fail told every single person (who ended up leaving upset) that it'll be a few minutes. Naturally the other customers and I were talking and nobody got out of there without sitting around for 25+ minutes and leaving upset. All while nobody was manning the host station so people who wanted tables would walk in wait and leave. The best part? They were only at about 30% capacity on a stormy Monday night. Don't order from here if your time is important to you, because it isn't to them once the card has been swiped. Would give this place 0 stars if I could. Stay away. read more

I've been to this Bo Lings location a few times for dim sum. I've only ever dined at Bo Lings for dim sum, so that will be reflected in my review. Dim sum is available at this location on the weekends, 11am - 3pm on both Saturday and Sunday. You receive a menu and mark on the menu what you would like to order and the server will pick it up once ready. The service is usually pretty quick and you can always order more later on if you decide. My absolute favorite for dim sum is the steamed bbq pork bun. Definitely get that if you are a first timer! I typically arrive right at 11 and the staff is prepped and ready to go as tables fill in. I enjoy frequenting Bo Lings for dim sum and will continue to do so! read more

This is a review for delivery not in the restaurant so I can't speak to the restaurant experience. I ordered the Gong Bao Chicken and the Egg Drop Soup, both dishes I have ordered and enjoyed from other restaurants many times in the past. The Gong Bao was fine - not great but fine for delivery Chinese although maybe not at such a higher price point. However the Egg Drop Soup was absolutely disgusting and inedible. Typically egg drop soup is a chicken or similar broth with whispy delicate ribbons of egg. This broth was thick, the wrong texture and tasted like egg yolk as if someone had pureed poached eggs and added a small amount of liquid. Truly awful! Do not order! read more

While I have ordered take-out from Bo Lings a lot, I have only dined-in a few times at this location and the plaza location. My go-to order is always the gong bao chicken. I love that it comes with green beans, and the sauce has the perfect amount of spice. We also ordered the crab rangoons, pineapple fried rice with chicken, and plain lomein noodles for my son. The pineapple fried rice is delicious, the crab rangoons are always solid, and my son loved his noodles. Overall, the food is pretty good and the portions are generous. I just think the prices are a little high for a casual weeknight dinner. read more

This is my go to Bo Lings location when getting dim sum. It's not as hectic as the Plaza location. On the weekend, my boyfriend and I will get there when it first opens and we get seated right away. The service here is also better I feel like! Dim sum never disappoints. We always order a lot and end up having leftovers to take home. The food slaps Everytime but you have to get the chrysanthemum tea with the rock sugar. The soup dumplings were probably one of my favorites along with the new menu item spicy cucumbers! Shamefull!! Im speaking for everyone this restaurant screwed over on Christmas Eve. I placed my order for pick-up, like many other families did, expecting to take home a large Chinese meal to their families on Christmas Eve. I walked into the restaurant expecting to be able to do just that and was greeted with an over-whelmingly full lobby of customers waiting to pick up their orders. I stood, about an hour, with many others. Myself and several others asked the front employee to get a manager to address what was going on, to only be ignored. In this hour of waiting only about two people actually left with their food. At this point, many of us just requested a refund! This restaurant has been established and in business in this area for far too long for such an unprofessional showing. I, unfortunately, had heard that this restaurant had really gone down-hill but Christmas Eve was disastrous and shameful! They might want to think about possibly shutting their doors and doing some re-evaluating about management and staff if they would like to continue to provide service to this area. We were able to go to one of their competitors in Overland Park, who also was very busy, and receive a lovely Christmas Eve Dinner. Full disclosure: I've been told my standard for Chinese food is high, growing up in the majority Asian suburbs of California. Bo Lings' dim sum beats out ABC Cafe, which is the only other place I've been for dim sum. If this is the best Kansas City has to offer, it's not too depressing. Overall, I recommend it. I like that they have a lot of options and what I've tried has been pretty good. I tried carryout with the following items, so I can't comment on dine-in service. Just a small thing-- other than some fancy dim sum chain I've been to where dishes were perilously close to $10, I've rarely seen such expensive dim sum prices (yes, even California was cheaper). Upon seeing the lack of options in the area, the pricing becomes understandable. Steamed roasted pork buns ($4.75) - Decent, slightly sweet and salty like a good pork bun should be. Smaller than I'm used to. Har gow/shrimp dumplings ($5.95) - I've also tried their har gow at their Country Plaza location and I just think something's missing-- maybe white pepper? I can't remember if it had ginger in it either. Their har gow/ha gaw just doesn't have the addictive, juicy, savory, MSG-y (?) flavor I expect. In fact, it's a little tasteless. Har cheung fun/fun rolls, shrimp ($5.95) - I feel lucky that there's at least one place where I can fuel my love for cheung fun. These weren't amazing, though, so I'm still thinking about just making my own at home instead. I do love a rice roll, though, and these are great with soy sauce. Sesame ball red bean filling ($4.75) - Fine, a little on the smaller side. Mango pudding ($4.75) - Yummy, highly recommend! I love the mild taste of mango pudding. I'm not a huge fan of mango flavor, but I always like mango pudding from dim sum. Dan tat/Egg custard tart ($4.75) - A little on the small side, but a decent flaky crust. The egg was a little too set, but it still had the delicious egg tart taste. read more

We enjoy going to Dim Sum at this location. This starts at 11am and there were already people waiting at the door when we got there for it to open. There were still plenty of tables that were empty though so it's not necessary to be there before open. We love the steamed BBQ pork buns. Those are by far our favorite item, followed by the shu mai. I didn't love the steamed shrimp balls. They didn't have a ton of flavor but I enjoyed everything else that we had. After you pick what you want off of the menu, the items come out quickly so you don't have a long wait. Service was great too - there were plenty of staff refilling drinks and clearing items from the table. We will go back again read more

Every time I'm in the Kansas City area. I make a point to go to Bo Lings for their dim sum which is only served at two of their locations on Saturday and Sunday from 11-3. Make sure you get there early because it's gets busy quick! We unfortunately arrived a little later and had to wait about 25 mins for a table. If you want dim sum they have a paper menu that you mark what and how many you want, there are lots of pictures to make it easier to order. There has not been a dim sum dish I haven't liked. We also ordered the General Tso's Chicken and Singapore Style Rice Noodles off the regular menu. All was delicious. Service was good considering how busy it was. As a long time KC resident and huge fan of Bo-Lings original location In the old KC Board of Trade, I was excited to order out for us and our visitors in town. To put it simply, our dishes were both incredibly bland. One was basic Sweet and Sour Chicken...how is it even possible for that to be bland? It was. The other was Shrimp and Chicken Hunan Style. While it's supposed to be a bit spicy anyway, I specifically asked that it be spicy. It had no heat, no flavor, totally bland. The review is for their dimsum. We haven't been here for a while because the increased their prices, but last weekend we decided to come here for a birthday. We spent $80 for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids) and still weren't full. This place used to be good decades ago but now has consistently hovered around mediocrity. the place was a mess, the floor was covered in food that they hadn't bothered to clean up. the door to the kitchen, right in everyones sightlines, was propped open with a bucket. the soup was cold. Absolutely ADORE Bo Lings. My parents had their first date here and got engaged here, so I have been going all my life. Consistently great food, their crab Rangoons are my favorite food in the world, and they never skimp on portions. Totally worth the money imo. Despite the fact this restaurant is very convenient for us, we eat there infrequently. We find their food to be a bit lackluster. We decided today to give them another try. For an appetizer we ordered the fried Chinese eggplant. I love Chinese eggplant. Plus, it was new to us on their menu. Much to my dismay and given the fact they are a Chinese restaurant, the dish was prepared with common black eggplant, not Chinese. They are very different!! I have been going here for years and the food is to die for. The hot and sour soup is a must whether it's to-go (great for when you are sick), or to eat during lunch which is when I usually go. We were the first one to come in morning for their dim sum. Our first visit here was not so great, but we decided to give them another try as the one on the plaza is awesome. We were seated and the carts started to come around. After about 10 minutes, we got some water at the table! We got 10 smalls, 9 mediums, and 1 large order. Some highlights: the tofu roll, seafood dumpling (scallops and shrimp), and rice noodles with shrimp were good. Their egg tarts are the absolute best!! Unfortunately, the shrimp fun rolls were not so good. They had a terrible after taste. The other food items we got were just okay, and the service was fine. I'd rate this restaurant 3.5 stars for dim sum. The food's pretty good, but dim sum service is less than my expectations. They barely made it around to our table, I had to flag the push carters down. It got tiring, and made for a bad dining experience. I eventually gave up, and so wasn't able to try many dim sum dishes. Highlight is this place was the egg tarts though, best I ever had. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in KC!! The General Tso's chicken and the egg rolls are the best!!

This was our Christmas Eve dinner stop. The place was PACKED, good for them! The service was a little slow and it seemed that everyone was working the front room as we saw several kitchen staff waiting and bussing tables. This is not a complaint, just an observation that everyone was working hard. The food was tasty and well prepared. We didn't order anything special, but we were happy with our Young Chow Fried Rice and the General Tso's Chicken. read more
