Sushi Uni has such an interesting assortment of menu items, really fun rolls and such, and I figured it was time for me to properly review it. The place itself is crowded. They absolutely need to get a larger place, especially when they are constantly busy. It was a weekday night when I went, and it was just as busy on times I've been during the weekend. Very cute place, but not great with the amount of clientele. Staff was great and very attentive. I had two whiskey cocktails and they were nice. I enjoy the fact that they have inexpensive Japanese whiskey. I've been expanding my palette, and Toro and Uni are some of my favorite pieces.. but I must say, I was very underwhelmed with their selection. Toro wasn't bad, but the Uni was so... salty. Wow! What a treat! We've lived here for 4 years and have FINALLY found our sushi spot. My party of 3 ordered various rolls and they were all superb. Everything was fresh and delicious. It was a fairly busy Saturday afternoon but we were seated quickly. Space is a bit tight in the main dining area, but it's not a bother at all. Our service was superb. Ananya was incredible and very attentive to us. She answered all of our menu questions with ease and exuberance. Sushi UNI has somewhat of a cult following in the KC metro. It's nestled into an unassuming strip mall in Lenexa, and is well known for offering spectacular lunch deals. Over a year ago I tried it out for the first time but it was so packed at lunch I couldn't get a table and had a just okay experience. I'm glad I came back and had a chance to really take it all in. Knowing it fills up for weekday lunches I met my sister here for an early lunch around 11:15 and we were able to get right in and snag a seat. It should be noted that even on a Monday this place filled up and by the time we left it was at capacity with a wait forming. Their website is a bit misleading as when I checked this week it still had the old lunch prices of around $10 for two rolls, soup or salad, and two crab rangoons. I was in awe of this deal so when I saw that the prices had bumped up to $12 I was not surprised - I still think $12 is a great deal in today's economy for TWO sushi rolls, soup, and two crab rangoon. You also get tons of rolls to choose from so it's a really fun lunch experience. When our food came out it was a lot so I think next time I might even go for the one roll lunch, but it was such a great meal and even after tip was good value. This place is popular for a reason, that's for sure. We have only been here once since there doesn't seem to be a way to make a reservation and the place is always crowded. We got lucky the other day since we wanted an early dinner and we managed to snag the last available take before the big rush. Our server was friendly and prompt. The food portions were very generous. I am a big fan of lemon rolls that were popular in California, but hard to find here. Sushi Uni has both a salmon and a tuna options. I highly enjoyed the dragon roll as it was perfect for my preferences. We all left full and happy. The service was quite good. Make sure you have a good amount of time, however. Went here for the first time and this is now instantly one of my favorite sushi places in KC. We got the sushi and sashimi platter and it's plentiful. The cuts of fish are nice and large and they really do give you a lot for 40 bucks. If you want to try a little bit of everything this is a good value. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. Also got the miso soup and crab Rangoons and thoroughly enjoyed those as well. It was very busy when we went but we still got seated pretty quickly and service was prompt. We'd never been to Sushi UNI but based on other Yelp reviews we figured we'd better get there early. We showed up around 4:45 on a Friday and got a table right away. But by 5:15 the place was packed. Tight quarters for sure (we were seated in the front room), but the staff were friendly, attentive and quick. We started with cocktails, crab Rangoon's (they were fine) as well as an egg roll, which was great. Next time we'd order two egg rolls for sure. We had a salad and egg drop soup and thought the ginger salad dressing was really good! For the entree we shared a combo of house-select sashimi and a couple of rolls. All of it was very tasty, fresh and well prepared. We ended up taking some home so good portion sizes as well. My roommate and I frequent this location quite often. We love their lunch special because you can get 3 rolls for $15. However, there's only certain rolls you can get so just keep that in mind. I have tried their mussels as well and I wouldnt say they are the best I have had but they are pretty good and I do recommend them. My only complaint is the locations size. Its super small so tables are packed in together which can be a little uncomfortable when enjoying your meal. Overall though, I do recommend the location. read more

Ratings don't lie, this is the best sushi I've had in KC and I think I have to say one of the best I've ever had. They also have excellent soups and crab rangoon. Broad menu, very attentive staff, and most importantly, fresh and flavorful sushi. My only critique is they might need some heat warnings on some of the rolls because their fresh jalapeños were very spicy.
