    Lunch - hunan beef

We have been here a few times now and find it to be your basic Chinese restaurant. We haven't tried anything terrible nor amazing here. Today was our first time dining in because I wanted to try it fresh and still nothing I would recommend to friends to rush out to try. Decent food for a decent price. I ordered the sauce on the side for my tofu because I was sure if I liked their sauce and apparently it's an extra $1 for that. Wish I was told that prior to making the request but I guess it turned out ok for me because the vinegar was overpowering the sauce. Service was great. We were in and out in under 30 minutes.

This is another on of our favorite local gems located in Olathe. The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have a lot of repeat customers and the phone is usually always ringing with to go orders. Some of our favorite dishes include the jasmine spicy crispy chicken, jasmine spicy beef, dumplings, beef and broccoli, crab rangoons, lo mein (any varity), and the cashew chicken. There is not much we haven't tried and don't enjoy here.

I liked the extensive menu, the fast seven minute service, the good portions, the tasty food, and the reasonable price. My chicken with vegetables lunch ($6.95) included choice of crab rangoon or egg roll, choice of soup, and choice of rice (including brown rice for a $1 upcharge). The entrée had a good portion of tasty chicken, a flavorful sauce, and a good variety of veggies, and was served super hot, while the egg roll was very good, and the fried rice was okay. I found the service at the counter to be more efficient than cheerful, welcoming, or friendly. Takeout and a covered patio were available, but the dining room was closed for the pandemic. Overall, very nice.

I read these comments and wonder if I ate at the same place? Ordered a ton of food to go, which I realize is not the same but its also not a deal breaker. I hate writing reviews like this because different strokes for different folks and Chinese can be as contentious as BBQ. However... I wont go back. Here is the crab rangoon, or really just a cream cheese wonton. No "crab" to be seen or smelled. Spit out my egg roll. Heavy cabbage taste. If you like that, youre in heaven. Some do.... Lo-mein was greasy and meh Chicken dishes were underwhelming, mainly thigh meat battered and sauces were not on point. And the weirdest thing of all, the sweet and sour sauce had a heavy cucumber taste?! It was kind of like Chinese you'd expect to get at the mall. Not my bag. Again, I hate writing bad reviews because everyone is just trying to make a living and it has not been easy as of late, especially for restaurants. But I was just so disappointed. Ill try to give it another shot one day and eat in.

Food was okay, super bland, no flavor. I got the chicken with veggies. Tasted like old people food. I would not recommend.

We found this place by chance. The food and service were fair/ok at best. Nothing special or worth going back for.

Food is always fresh and flavorful. We enjoy their luncheon specials and always need a take home box. Our favorite for Chinese quinine.

Did not like the food at all. The egg rolls & egg drop soup was pretty good. The food was really bland.

We have tried quite a few dishes and so far all were packed with a lot of flavor!! The egg rolls - super crispy, fried right and delicious. The salt and pepper fish - this one is by far my favorite dish out of all. They had a wonderful crispy coating and were tossed with fresh peppers and the right amount of seasoning. The treasures chicken, beef and shrimp hot pot was hearty and so comforting with tender meat and tasty broth. The Mongolian beef, chicken, and shrimp - was really well-made as well with tender pieces of meat and savory sauce and all these three dishes above married well with the hot, steamed rice that they served with it. I also tried the seafood noodle dish with the white sauce, which had shrimp, fish, mushroom, vegetable noodles, and egg. This one was pretty unique and one of the highlights. It was gooey chewy and all the ingredients tasted well together in a light savory white sauce. This particular one was so comforting that I kept going back to this one for another bite. I love that this restaurant has a lot more dishes to offer and that their portion sizes are huge. The pricing is very reasonable as per the portions with most of the entrees in the range of $16 - $18 with seafood costing a little more. The service has always been very friendly but be sure to dine in way before closing time or the staff might tell you to take a to-go 30-45 mins before closing. Otherwise the restaurant has a very casual relaxed feel to enjoy with family and friends. I still have so much left to try but based on everything I've had so far I definitely recommend Hong Kong star to all Chinese food lovers!!

We typically order the basil seafood pot, beef chow fun, duck, and fire-roasted chicken (takes abt 30 min to cook - they start making it when you are there, but one time I called ahead to let them know I'm on the way and the started it early). Family-style is the best way to go about eating here!

My husband recalls (I do not) I thought it was the best Chinese I've had recently, so we decided to go a 2nd time. I realize staffing is hard. And the one staff there was doing ok. It was the food that wasn't. I love me some cheap Chinese food. This was not cheap, and it was not good. The egg rolls had zero flavor. It was crunchy and 'fried' -- nothing else. The crab ran good was fine, but do they ever really taste like anything but fried cream cheese? I got the honey chicken. The chunks were too big for one bite, but no knives, and the sauce too thin and the battering on the chicken was too little, that nothing 'stuck' and it was tasteless. Not bad, just tasteless. I'd rather eat nothing than eat high fat/calorie foods that aren't good. I had 3 bites of my chicken ($13), I had 2 bites of the egg rolls ($6), 1.5 crab Rangoon ($5). Not cheap and not good. The gentleman was pleasant, but he said like 5 words to us -- not that we required any more. Sad, but if no one ever says anything, we don't know where we can improve.
