This is a great old, family-run downtown hardware and home wares store of the kind you rarely see these days. We drop in to check it out every time we're in town and always find something we want or need. They've got regular hardware items, plus all kinds of nuts, bolts, tools, and more. They also have a great selection of nice homewares and cookware, English tea pots, high quality Le Creuset cooking pots, skillets, etc., and small items like mini spatulas. They have a lot more stuff as well. It's nice to see an old, traditional hardware store like this hanging on in a downtown. They have good prices, giving a good value on things we've bought, and service is friendly. read more

This is a Thank You from the Gould family. We arrived in Chico in the late 40"s. Our first parsonage was on Woodland Ave. right across from the entrance to Bidwell Park. Our house had a beautiful tall front window that our father decided was perfect for a magnificent tall Christmas tree. He got a tree that was too tall for the window. One of his first visits to Colliers was to fasten the top of the tree (that he had cut off) to the outside roof of our house. Thus one of the first purchases for a long relationship with Colliers. They took care of that, supplied whatever was needed for changing a garage into an office, for building Aldersgate church, etc etc. 75 years later and we remember the care and guidance we got through the years. Wow wow wow this place was so cool, not just tools. They have a bit of everything here. We went in just to look around, as we were tourist Then a worker asked if i needed anything i said yes actually i do. It was an odd item and i said don't worry about it as i couldn't describe exactly what it was. The. Another worker I thing the owner of manager was persistent of finding what I needed. It was a 50 cent piece so it wasn't like it was a big purchase. They were just trying to be helpful. Well, they found it from my vague description. Now that is customer service. I just love this old school small town hardware store in downtown Chico. Walking into collier is a bit like stepping back in time. I like to buy my Lassen National Forest Christmas tree permit here and then drive up into the mountains to grab my own slice of the holidays. When I am in Chico, I always check out Collier Hardware. They have just about anything you could want - tools, kitchenware, electrical parts, and a great selection of bolts, screws, etc. Parking can be a problem, but I go on Sundays when they are open from 10-4 and there is free parking all around. read more

I worked here from 2018-2019 and am still appalled at the mismanagement of this business. I was not paid on time even once in my 14 months at this job. When I brought this to the attention of management, I was dismissed and told that they are not legally required to pay me on a specific date (which they surprisingly did have posted in the workplace as they should). While I insisted this is untrue, I reminded them that some of us are working students and have bills to pay. I was told by one manager to "tell them you can pay them later" (as if I am not paying any real bills?). At that point, It was clear to me that they had no understanding or respect for their employees well-being. They take advantage of the fact that most students working here are unaware of employment law and it's a disgusting display of character. I was forced to quit and report them, as I refused to be mistreated by the Lucena's any further. If you've been here, you've probably also noticed that it is typically women in housewares/behind the register and men in hardware. This is not a coincidence and they typically do not consider training women to work in hardware the same way they will train their male employees with no experience. A female coworker of mine had 2+ years of hardware experience (more than most of the men hired there) and was told she was not qualified. The culture at this store is extremely sexist. If you shop here, I'm guessing you care about supporting local business, but unfortunately this is not one you should consider. I urge you to give your hard earned money to business owners who respect their employees. read more

Best store on Planet Earth. Classic hardware with folks who know just about everything and have a solution. Not only hardware but great top drawer housewares. It is really a "destination" and we need to be sure we support this jewel. Parking can be a challenge, but there are short term slots on the side of the business. I was very disappointed with the products I purchased here as well as the response from the manager. A tea towel I purchased had a little chicken on it that started to come off before I even washed it. No biggie. But I also bought bronze colored adhesive hooks that slid down my wall and started pulling off the paint. I had just painted my walls this winter (it's early fall now) and was absolutely beside myself that my walls were now destroyed. I showed the cashier a pic of the wall and displaced hooks. The cashier asked me multiple times if I followed directions and I stated that I absolutely had. She spoke to her manager and he stated she could not make the return without the product in hand. I went a politely spoke the manager and explained that I wanted to minimize the damage the hooks were causing and didn't want to tear them off. He was uncompromising. I had to bring in the product. He followed up with 'those hooks are known to do that and the other hooks don't'. He didn't even look up from his computer or apologize or make his way to counter to speak to me. What? Why is it on your shelves then? Where are you efforts to remediate the situation? Anyways, I really wanted to shop here and support local, small business. Unfortunately due to poorly made products and service, I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I love this place, can wander in there a long time. They have several products to polish water spots off your windows. Cookware is fantastic, swiss army knives in a large assortment, fireplace stuff. Make your own wonder years. Make your children's wonder years...don't let them think it's all Toys-R-Us Mattel Pink and Fisher Price Blue. Get a hammer and nails and build something. Honestly, I think the place is kinda meh. Tis neither spectacular nor appalling. I think if I lived within a few blocks of the place I'd stop in more often for housewares and house-fixing things, but I have no problem driving out to Lowes/Sears/Home Depot. They have every color and size of Kleen Canteens and those beautiful Kitchenaid mixers in every color of the rainbow. And they have a wall of cookie cutters in damn near every shape you could think of! But there are some negatives about the joint. Obviously their a little higher in price since they're not a big box store which isn't the biggest deal in most cases, but some of the stuff is really overpriced. Particularly their high end cookware. I've seen some of the same brand of pots else ware for nearly $100 less. Seesh that's a big difference-I mean that's nearly enough to eat dinner at Olive Garden for a week! Nearly lol. And the staff is 9 times outta 10 rude. I've asked where I could find something and I've had eye rolls and a finger launch up in the general direction of the item as a response more than once. I ran in once 30 mins to closing grab some cookie cutters to make some tasty treats that night and I was told they were closing soon-no hello. I've actually had someone from behind the register look at me like I was a circus runaway when I set some items on the counter to purchase. Umm I don't see what the problem is here, I'm just trying to give you my money! Did I interrupt your hungover space out episode? I still stop in when when I make my downtown shopping rounds, I mean they do have some unique stuff. I'm just not likely to buy it. What a jewel. About as close as you can get to a classic hardware store in this day and age. Great selection of kitchen gadgets and outdoor grilling tools. We were visiting Chico for the weekend and made this one of our last stops before leaving town. Worth checking out even if you don't need anything in particular. We walked out with about $50 worth of clever little tools for the kitchen. Take your folks here when they come to visit. They'll love it. read more

disclaimer: I haven't been here in a long time. BUT! I used to go here with my dad and they always gave great service. I love perusing all the cooking/baking utensils as well as all the various hardware aisles. This place felt real. Home Depot and Lowe's are scary. Do yourself a favor and go here first. 1 star is generous... Setting aside this place isn't utilizing its space more efficiently to carry products that would turn over more often, what they should have going for them is superior knowledge and service. *Loud Buzzer Sound* Each and every time I go in here it pains me to the point where now I don't. When I did, NOBODY is wearing anything to identify themselves as an employee. Random girl will be sitting on stool at register, however is of little use as all she is good for is to summon someone else over who actually knows something about what I'm asking for. 3 out of 5 times I went in looking for the obscure, and had to find it on my own after yet another new kid couldn't find it. Good luck if you have a any detailed question about a product. There is apparently 1 older guy there who is always on the phone, up in a loft of something and by the time you've been passed between 2 or 3 kids, then take you to him and he's the only one who knows more than doodley squat. If this place could actually hire some people who can stick it out at a job more than 1-3 wks, dressed them in a little more than shorts and tee shirts, and screened out the ones that aren't much on the friendly side, hell I could prolly see me giving them 3-4 stars. But I know that'll never happen. Another thing of note here. Don't shop here on the weekend, or Thursday late afternoon. You will circle for multiple times before you get lucky to find parking 2 blocks over, and smell bum piss along your walk there. If your in the unfortunate spot to have to shop here, hope you live nearby, or go on an early weekday, and watch my statements pan out 100% spot on. lol read more

They always have what I need at a great price and alot of great gifts and gadgets to check out as well. Don't miss this place. Finding a business where I always feel comfortable to ask questions is a very big deal for me. Especially when the questions are regarding my first time attempts at being a handy(wo)man, landscaper, carpenter, gourmet chef, etc. And here I come in with my young, petite self looking like a lost puppy and searching for power tools, shovels, tiny set screws and cheesecloth. We purchased our Weber grill from them because they went above and beyond...We needed a grill with a natural gas hookup and during a very busy graduation weekend, they brought one over for us from their warehouse. To me, customer service is huge and we so appreciated the extra steps they took to make sure we were satisfied with our products despite how busy they were. read more

Collier's Hardware is as charming as it gets for a hardware store. Seriously, you could spend an hour+ looking at all the fun trinkets, gadgets, and doo-dad's they offer! I once went in for a key to be made and left an hour-and-a-half later with not only a key, but an adorable strawberry shaped teapot and gorgeous organic kitchen towels in hand. This store is amazing! They have top notch kitchen tools, great selection of some of the best small kitchen appliances, all kinds of nuts and bolts and the like, gardening and grilling supplies, hats, gloves,...the list is endless and if they don't have it, ask them and they might be able to order it for you! I have to say that our most amazing Collier's experience was a Saturday morning when we decided we wanted steak on the grill that night and we could not do that without purchasing a new grill. My husband had researched and knew the make and model of grill he wanted. We went to the big box stores and they did not have what we wanted. Just in case, I called Collier's. They had the very grill in stock!! I explained that we hoped to grill tonight and wondered if it might be possible we could have it in time for dinner. They offered to start assembling it right away, we could stop by to make the purchase on the way home and they would have it delivered by 4:30 p.m.!!!! We did not have to mess with assembly or delivery AND it arrived a bit early. Impressive! read more

When I first walked into Collier Hardware in the fall of 1969 as an incoming Junior at Chico State, my initial thought was "Wow, this reminds me of the OSH store in San Jose." That's the original OSH, just off San Carlos St near the train station, before it was remodeled into annoying big box. After graduation, I moved away, but never forgot Collier's, and all the help they provided this starving college student with his various projects while attending school. Had an opportunity to visit Chico this August, and one of my first stops on the agenda was at Collier's. . . Came here to get bbq utensils for a Father's Day gift. They only had one package left and all 3 instruments inside were scratched. I asked for a little discount and the owner said absolutely not. So I dropped my things and went to Home Depot where it was all cheaper anyway... Love supporting local shops but not when the owners are jerks who don't work with their customers!!!
