Thomas Sommer is a great contractor and a genuinely fantastic human being…read more My parents spent a large portion of their savings to purchase a home in San Diego to be closer to family. Soon after they moved to their new home which was built only 3 years before they purchased it, it became clear there was a signings that construction defect on the second floor with a large leak into the ceiling which was due to incorrect installation of a sliding door. This was a known defect which had not been transparently disclosed by the prior owner. We attempted to contact the contractor who had built the home without success. After months of meeting with other contractors to get this door replaced and reinstalled, we found Sommer Construction. Thomas met with us and was incredibly empathetic - he insisted that rather than repair it himself - he would help us contact the home builder and facilitate the repair being done under warranty. When we first heard this idea, we didn't really want to go down this path because we didn't think there was any way this could work. Given the long ordeal, we simply wanted to pay for it and have it repaired without the hassle of arguing and fighting with someone (especially given that Covid was ongoing). After speaking to Tom and considering how expensive the repair was going to be, we thought why not give it a chance. Tom was convinced that this repair should be repaired under warranty by the person who built the home. It seemed to good to be true that someone would go through all of this hassle and go out of their way to help us get this done. This just speaks to the kind of person Thomas is, he tracked down the original builder and held him responsible for the repair. He then guided us through the negotiations and repairs with the original contractor - taking time out of his busy schedule all because he is a genuinely good and empathetic human being. It is so refreshing to meet someone like this and we cannot express how grateful we are to Thomas Sommer. He gives contractors a good name. If you read the other reviews you will quickly see that this is just the way that Thomas is and how he runs his company. The more we got to know Thomas we found that he is simply a man of principle first and foremost. If we ever need any project done, he is the first person we would call for sure! Sadly, I'm updating my review and it isn't good…read more The grout on the kitchen floor is coming out all over at a year and nine months. There's only one person in the house and with the pandemic, nobody else has been here. There isn't much traffic in that room. I contacted Thomas on 1/11/21. I asked about a warranty and explained about the grout and that the floor was creaking. He was a bit defensive - he'd done the job right - but said to call him back in a week and we'd look into it. I called again on 1/20/21 as requested; no response. I called again 1/28; no response. Ghosting your clients when there is an issue with your work is really problematic. Even if the warranty is over, it's best to find out what has happened. For this, I'm going to hire someone else to regrout and I think the problem should be solved - I've since realized the creaking is coming only where the tiles are missing grout so it should be an easy fix. That said, you should think twice about using Sommer Construction; what if the situation is bigger? And, if it is, you can always claim against his Contractors bond with the State of CA to get resolution if he ghosts you.

They remodeled my floors, demo'd some walls, did a full paint job, hardwired & installed new lighting, built new walls with custom shelving inside the walls, created arched doorways, installed wallpaper on the ceilings, built & tiled a custom desk, and so much more. My landlord wouldn't let us demo the floors, so Carlos came up with a creative solution of laying new flooring on top of the old so we didn't have to demo. Every obstacle that came up, the guys were able to work around it and still do all the things I wanted to do with the space. Carlos made great suggestions along the way and I felt confident trusting his judgement and took his recommendations on which flooring would look best, or paint colors, materials etc etc. I highly recommend using Mendi Custom Builders if you need any remodeling work done. I am very embarrassed that I have to write this review which could have been prevented if I did…read moremore work screening a contractor. Let me explain. I researched contractors on Yelp and found one that I wanted to hire. I clicked the button to request a consultation and Carlos called me right away. He had good sales skills and offered to come to look at my bathroom remodel project the same day. It turns out that when I submitted a request for a consultation it went to many businesses, not only the one that I was interested in. I finally realized that this was a different business. I looked at William S' review and decided to give them a chance. The business started in January 2022, yet the review that I read stated that they had two bathrooms, a gigantic kitchen, a brand new ADU unit, and 7 televisions in the course of the 3 months since the contractors license was obtained. I later found out that William S is a Mendi Builders employee and that it is a fake review. But I took the bait. I was desperate to get the bathrooms working and planned to be out of town for a week. Despite the vague and expensive proposal Carlos created, I gave him money to begin our project because of his availability and promise to work while I was out of town. In retrospect this was such a bad idea. The very first day that the team came to demo the home they forgot to cap the water underneath the vanity. They left water dripping on a Friday night and had no plans to return until Monday. Fortunately, my son came home and heard the dripping and stopped the leak and bailed out the bathroom. From that day forward every single thing that they touched was a disaster. Broken Tile: I had some special tile installed by an old friend who is no longer working that I asked him to protect. He destroyed that tile and did not alert me or attempt to repair it, instead he tried to conceal it. Plumbing: He changed a plumbing valve and left a huge glob of some sort of wax inside the pipe which was only discovered by the plumber that I had to hire to redo all of Carlos' work. In addition, they were so sloppy that they punched a hole in the wall behind the shower and into my family room. Mess Containment: Construction is always messy and Carlos promised to use plastic sheeting to contain the mess when doing drywall work. Instead of protecting my home, his team took a huge fan out of my garage and blew the construction debris into my family room and garage. This bathroom contained an exterior wall and Mendi employees started installing the drywall without adding insulation to the wall. In addition the workers made no attempt whatsoever to clean up any of their messes and left debris on my roof, throughout my home and garage, and even threw their drink containers in my garden. Their employee drove over a retaining wall and left it down in my driveway. Safety: Mendi removed two toilets there was no attempt to seal off the septic system and the home reeked of sewage. Sewage gasses are not only disgusting, they are dangerous. Mendi switched out a bedroom fan and did not clean up any of the debris. They let a bowl full of screws fall 8 feet down onto the new flooring in my son's room, which he stepped on. They also turned off all circuit breakers in the home and failed to turn all of them back on, so when I returned from my trip there was only one functioning toilet in the home, but the bathroom had no electricity for two days. When I fired Mendi I incurred many expenses and it cost me thousands of dollars to repair the damage they caused. It is hard for me to believe that Mendi was able to obtain a contractor's license. The amateur staff was unsupervised and clearly did not follow best practices of the trade.
