John is a talented carpenter, craftsman, and woodworker. I hired him to build a side garden gate and small deck in my backyard. I sent John a few photos of gates that I liked. He sketched out a drawing. The gate was built quickly and installed. It turned out so well, I decided not to paint it white and just have it sealed. The deck came next. The challenge: I wanted it to curve and mimic the existing paver path so it looked like it had always belonged there and part of the design. A rectangular deck would have been simpler and less expensive; however it would have looked like it was plonked down as an afterthought. We are writing to commend HomeSmith on the excellent job they did on our Master Bathroom remodel here in Ramona. Right from the start we knew we were going to love the upgrade when it was completed. John Miller and his trusty side-kick Eric worked well together to complete the task. He returned my call quickly and was prompt in sending a quote. The work we had completed was a full gut job of the bathroom including removal of the glass shower enclosure, removal of the rarely used whirlpool tub, and removal and refurbishment of the existing vanity. We expanded the shower 18 inches, built a new wall, and added a second shower head. No need to ever argue again about shower temperature, we now each have our own shower head and niche. We added a smaller free-standing tub, upgraded to quartz and low-profile vessel sinks, new hardware, new mirrors, new lighting fixtures, and new upgraded toilet. We also added a new vent fan in the shower and floor tile. From beginning to end, John kept us abreast of the schedule and explained why things would work when requested or why not. He made excellent recommendations along the way that really helped with the final product. Every worker who came to our house was polite and professional. Although there were a few challenges along the way due to product failure, no fault of HomeSmith, John stayed on top of it making sure everything was completed to our full satisfaction. Homesmith replaced an old non working 72 inch bathtub for us. The tile work they did was excellent. Eric went above and beyond by going to several tile stores to get the best match for our existing tile. Can't even tell they are different tiles. John, Eric, and the rest of the Homesmith team completed a major remodel of our home in La Mesa. Work included completely gutting and redoing our kitchen/living room (knocking out a load bearing wall to open up the galley kitchen into the living room and installing a new support beam, installing new cabinets and countertops, moving a gas line to accommodate a new cooktop), redoing our master bathroom (enlarging the bathroom footprint, building a custom shower, installing a brand new vanity, and all the tilework). They also performed a major rehaul of a shoddy electrical system left by the previous owners of the home, installed brand new flooring, and repainted the entire interior of the house. John completely revamped a very dated mid-80s house my husband and I had just bought and turned it a clean-lined modern place we're happy to call home. We initially learned about him through our interior designer who'd had customers who were thrilled with his work. We quickly saw why. How often do you find a general contractor you can trust for his honesty, skill and extremely high standards? Everyone I've talked to tells me rehabbing a house is not supposed to be exciting and successful, it's supposed to be nerve-wracking and full of disappointment. Well, I guess we're in the minority and John gets full credit for that. In addition to completely rehabbing the kitchen and bathrooms, several walls were removed, the double front doors were replaced with a wider single door and sidelight, all windows were replaced and some were added with new shapes, etc. so there was stucco work. All plumbing was replaced (it had been polybutylene), the electrical panel was upgraded, all walls and ceilings were re-textured as well as repainted. There was more done but that gives you an idea of the magnitude of the job. John is an excellent leader and every sub he brought to our job shared his values and high standards as well as being pleasant to work with. I am very picky and I found John's standards to be even higher than my own. My husband didn't know that a person with higher standards existed! If we were to go back in time the only change we would make is to do MORE work through John (e.g., hardwood floors) so his standards would be applied to every part of the house. Another bonus with John is he has an excellent eye for design. There were a lot of design decisions that were made better along the way due to his input. He's also a creative problem-solver and was able to come up with great solutions to any issues that arose. John, together with his team, were a pleasure to work with and my husband and I highly recommend him and would hire him again in a heartbeat. read more

Homesmith remodeled both bathrooms in my vintage ranch house, going down to wall studs and concrete floor and doing everything over: plumbing, two tile showers, windows, cabinets, electrical, the works. John (the owner) was very patient with me, letting the project play out at it's own pace. His ideas meshed really well with what I wanted to do and I never felt pressured to do anything I didn't want to. The subs he used paid attention to details, like the plumber who pointed out that we needed to replace some of the 1950s vintage drain line in one bathroom to get a good connection. My requests for small changes (different tile at one place, some more electrical outlets) were worked in at reasonable prices. We decided it was time to remove a small wall between our kitchen and dining area. The big question was if it was a load bearing wall. To our delight it wasn't. In addition, we wanted to replace our bathroom vanities and install a pocket door. All this was accomplished in a week while we were out of town. We had him come back last week to help straighten and reinforce our old garage which had shifted and wracked about 3 inches out of plumb due to the unfortunate growth of a large palm tree which had been planted too close. He was innovative in his methods for lifting the structure to remove tree roots from between the slab and the sill plate, replaced rotted wood, added plywood sheathing as needed, got the structure to within a 1/2 inch of plumb, and even got the garage door to close again! It was a hard day's work, but we knew that John could do it... and he didn't leave until the job was done. We will definitely call John when we are ready to renovate our bathroom and kitchen. I contacted John about a remodeling job on my 1923 home. The job was not enormous, but multi-faceted, to say the least. Basically, I wanted to bump out an exterior wall and expand my home office. At the same time, I needed to correct some drainage problems (flooding in the basement during heavy rains) that were caused, in part, by the natural rain water flow from the higher side of the house, to the lower side of the house (around the bumped-out home office). In addition, the new home office would open out through new french doors, onto a new deck that connected to an existing deck (that needed replacing). I had another company draw the plans and pull the permits. The end result is magnificent! My new home office looks as if it has been part of the home all along. The french doors going out onto the expanded deck lets light flood into the office, and gives me access to an outdoor space I love. And, there are no more drainage problems! My basement is dry as a bone. I would say the investment I made with John has resulted in an increase in the house value of at least double the investment, if not triple. More importantly, John has been a complete professional, caring about the end product, selecting sub-contractors with his same concern for quality, and one of the nicest guys you'll find. I would not hesitate to recommend John (HomeSmith) to anyone. And, should I need additional remodeling work done at the house, I will most definitely call John. read more

John Miller of HomeSmith has been a true pleasure to work with! He first came to meet with us at our 1920 Craftsman home in June to take a look at our proposed interior work. He was friendly and professional and came up with some great ideas for our house that we hadn't even thought of, like making the small fixed windows on either side of the fireplace operable. John was prompt in providing us with an itemized quote so that we could determine what work we would be able to afford to do and what would have to be scaled back. Once we had a finalized scope he began work on some of the smaller projects (re-roping double-hung windows, filling and recreating trim on severely damaged window sills and doors, creating beautiful new solid black walnut tops for the mantle and built-ins, etc.) while we worked on getting a permit for our bigger projects. Once our permit was in place (end of July), the demo began. John changed out 5 swinging doors to be sliding pocket doors. He also cut an opening in the wall between our kitchen and dining room (complete with new header & pier footings). John coordinated all the necessary subs - from plumbing, to electrical, to concrete, to drywall - and were all a pleasure to work with as well. He clearly surrounds himself with other hardworking friendly professionals which we greatly appreciate. John was very accommodating of our schedule so that the painters could start work when they needed to and we, in turn, could move in when we needed to. He worked many long days (and weekends when necessary) to make it happen, but never sacrificed the quality of the work. Thank you so much, John for making our house into a beautifully renovated home! The electricians and plunber he had work on our house have become our regular electricians and plumber! John did a number of jobs for us including taking fown a pony wall and installing floor tile where the wall had been, remodelling a small bathroom, removing tile from a Roman tub (so that new faucets could be installed) without damaging any of the tile, and building a beautiful new custom fireplace surround to take the place of the original surround which had been fashioned of molded drywall. John designed and built the fireplace surround of cherry wood and topped it with a copper mantel and chimney. We now have the most beautiful fireplace in town! There is even a matching copper shelf for the pony wall in the foyer. We have hired John and HomeSmith again to put in new baseboards and door casements and to build a solid wood staircase and gallery. We know that the work, like all of the projects undertaken by John Miller and HomeSmith, will be exemplary. John even had only non-smokers come to our home because one of us is very allergic to tobacco smoke. We felt perfectly at ease having John come to the house when there was nobody home.
