My first memories of West Ajo include a purple horse brush that I desperately wanted to purchase so I could groom my horse, Patches. I saved up my allowance for weeks in order to purchase this amazing purple brush. When I got up to the counter, Chuck rang the brush up and, the child that I was, I had not accounted for tax. Embarrassed, I said I didn't have enough -- and I remember Chuck laughing, saying how unfair taxes were, and he told me to take the brush home anyways. I was approximately seven at the time and I'm now 30 and still remember this. This is the kind of feed store this place is. Heart and compassion. Family run. Amazing. West Ajo is a family run business that sells all kinds of different livestock feed with a smile, warmth, and the character that you won't see at chain stores. They don't sell toys and clothes in their store but if you come in asking "What is the best feed for my horse" they're going to be able to help you out. I'd take great advice, knowledge about their products, and the kindness they have over a chain store any day. Their prices are competitive. They have a decent selection. And they'll always be there for you if you have questions, need something, or want to post something on their awesome bulletin board. They also support the community and have donated to 4-H events, to the annual Tucson Poultry Pigeon and Fancy Fowl Show in November, and to many other events. The reptile living quarters were super clean. When I walked in everything was orderly and she had food for my lizard prepared and ready for him to eat. You can tell Chelsea really cares about animals. She is also very knowledgeable about reptiles and gave me some great advice. My inherited tank set up wasn't the best and she was able to give me advice on proper lighting. She also referred me to several informative groups and recommended a good vet. Unfortunately due to his age and failing liver I had to make the heart breaking decision to put him in a better place where he feels no more pain. Everything was handled with empathy and care. I trust them with reptiles as I had brought my corn snake Elote to them as well. Yes vets are expensive if you do not have insurance, but if you can't spare their health for a cost, you probably shouldn't have pets at all.

What my metaphor hopes to convey is that this is the most enriching fish store I have ever experienced. Every species was kept in an appropriately sized and clean tank. Something I didn't see that I reliably see at big chains: dead fish! An additional simple metric of how I rate a pet store is based on how they keep betta fish, if at all. The one betta I could locate was kept alone, in a planted tank that I would say is at least 5 gallons. Shark Reef has plenty of supplies, food options, and medication. I went to get some Seachem Kanaplex and might have just found my new favorite fish store.

As I released the fish I noticed 1 of the Ko Angle fish was not looking good. It died in 5 hrs. Called the store and explained the fish died. They refused to give me a refund or store credit. Stay away from this store. Very bad customer service.

One time when our dog was boarded there was a bad monsoon that knocked power out for a couple days and the road to the boarder was closed. But the staff was parking and walking a couple miles each way to take care of the animals. I think that shows their dedication and love for the animals. Sometimes it's tough to get through on phone but they are super busy with the dogs and at least you know your dog is in good hands. Wish they had cameras though.

Well, we just had the same issue as Deb R…read more We took 2 dogs in for an overnight, Saturday night, Sunday morning. Took food for both dogs, clearly marked, separated into 2 meals for each dog. Pretty self explanatory. When we picked them up Sunday afternoon, I noticed there was a meals worth of food in one of the bags. I asked why is there food left over? There was much confusion and conversation about it between 2 of the staff, one of which I assume is the owner or manager. Long story short, one of my dogs didn't get fed as instructed. The excuse was that they are training someone. Seriously? Pretty crappy training. What did they think the second serving of food was for???? Yes, they apologized. Did they offer any discount? No. Can we trust them again with our animals? Nope. So in one weekend they lost a 15 year client and a new customer. Have to say also that they suck with trying to talk to anybody on the phone to make reservations. Too bad.
