If you don't want to buy a huge bag of bird seed or if you want to make your own bird concoction- this is a great place to come. They not only sell bird seed by the pound, but they have lots of types of seeds. Of course if you want large packets and premade bird food cylinders - they have it too. And a plus is they make the bird food cylinders fresh and on site and so you know you are not buying old bird seed. They have a good selection of bird feeders and bird food. Service is super nice. In looking at reviews, I had to laugh. This store has everything, however, the owner is fanatical. How was I to know, I was like a visitor to a Pentecostal church on Easter Sunday. He wanted to save my bird loving soul with everything he had in him. I too can attest, the owner did not want to ring up my order, until he was done saying his piece. He actually told me "sugar has a bitter aftertaste." With that alone I looked at my husband and he at me, knowing that SUGAR couldn't possibly have a bitter after taste to a hummingbird....let alone to a human. Then I was told that if I followed the directions in making hummingbird nectar (the recipe in the box for the hummingbird feeder) with sugar and water I'd be killing the hummingbirds by shortening their lifespan DRAMATICALLY. So just know if you need anything bird related, this is the MECCA of stores, but the preacher IS IN. read more

I love this store. Whenever I need anything for birding, this is where I come. Today I needed to go stock up on thistle for my backyard feeder. The Wild Bird Store is a mom and pop family-owned and family-run business. 80% of what they sell is made locally and 1/2 of THAT is made by the owner, Jon Friedman. Their hummingbird nectar is the highest-rated in the country for being the closed to the natural nectar the hummers eat. They are the only manufacturer in the U.S.A. of insect meal. All seed mixes are Jon's mixes. They get only organic seed from organic farms. You'd think you would pay a lot more for these high quality products but you don't. Their prices are competitive with commercial ones you find in the big box stores and yet The Wild Bird Store's products are fresher and higher quality. Every week of the year their seeds are blended so what you buy in the store is going to be fresh. Everybody who works in this store has long experience with birding, some even with over 30 years behind those binoculars. They are experts in birds that are found in Southern Arizona and they write and publish articles all year. The Couple that own the store are very personable and extremely knowledgeable about birds, food and great about giving you tips for your whatever bird habitat you want to create. They make their own food blends that are top quality and the Hummingbird mix is the best around! They also have beautiful hand crafted bird houses and unique habitats made by local artists. My husband brought home a bird seed mold from Ace Hardware a few days ago and thus a new obsession for the both of us was born. I have driven past Wild Bird Store several times, so I knew they existed but had never stopped in. When our Ace bird seed mold dwindled after a few days of gleefully watching birds on our patio, I suggested a trip to Wild Birds. We are in the process of landscaping our backyard, so we weren't ready to spend too much yet, but are gathering ideas and GOLLY do they have some good ideas here! We did buy a small finch feeder with a bag of thistle seed (as I'm writing this I just looked out the window to see that the finches have found the feeder!). The people working at the store are extremely helpful, and nicely enough they will just let you shop if you want too. They have a very nice selection of feeders, both ones made locally and commercially, and a wonderful assortment of bird seed in bulk, bagged, and molds made in shop (they have little wreaths for hanging if you're looking for a nice gift for a bird-lover!). I know we will be going back to this store regularly as we now have about 1,000 birds in our yard who are depending on us for their food supply... (I guess we are also going to need housing, waterers, and baths as well....) read more

Best bird store ever ! They've got it all.. amazing hand painted locally made feeders.. as well as standard feeders, bird houses, and etc for all types of birds. Everyone is very knowledgable and extremely helpful, everything from helping me pick out products to loading my car up.. I've never been disappointed with their excellent customer service. I stopped by here out of curiosity after eating at the Egg Connection in the same strip mall. The son of the owner, I forget his name, was on shift. He was very personable, knowledgable, courteous, and knew the products! I wasn't going to buy anything but he sparked my interest and caved. I'll be back. "A Birdless Bird Store" If for whatever reason I'm having a bad day, I only have to look out at my bird feeders through either living room or kitchen window, and my mood is instantly lifted. There's a seed, suet, 'Nutsie' (a special blend of nuts & fruit) feeder and hummingbird feeder hanging from the four arms of a sturdy steel pole in our front yard; The sweet sound of the songbirds flitting around the feeders, antics of the sociable, friendly little lesser goldfinches, and the marvelous colors of those "flying jewels" that are our hummingbirds brighten ANY day in so many ways! The feeders and the pole they hang from were purchased at a wonderful local store: The Wild Bird Store. This gem of a shop has been in business over 30 years. It's a true mom & pop store, a rarity nowadays. It was started by one Jon Friedman and his wife Shani. Though Shani is unfortunately no longer with us, Jon's son, Justin and his wife Clarissa are proudly carrying on this family business; a unique, independent store in Winterhaven Square on the busy corner of Ft. Lowell and Country Club, Tucson, AZ. The store's big glass windows act like a jewel case, letting in natural light, showcasing the wide array of specialty items within. A multitude of feeders, MANY made in the on-site woodworking shop, bird baths-some are hand-painted Talavera beauties-each one unique in its design, lots of books on birds-dealing with just about every subject from feathers, to identification, reference guides of all kinds, books on bats and yes, there's even bat houses for sale, with large and small models; again-made in the on-site shop. There's a plethora of humming bird feeders of ALL sizes and shapes; some are hand-blown glass and those that aren't are from companies like "Aspects" and "Droll Yankee." These companies offer lifetime warranties with ALL their feeders. After moving from Chicago, I accidently dropped a hummingbird feeder I brought with me; one from Aspects. I called that company and a replacement piece was in my hands within a week. Thing is, almost all feeders the store purchases from reputable vendors that are NOT made on-site have lifetime warrantees, and the owner's do their best to make sure the feeders they carry are made here in the U.S.A. They also stock locally made things like artisanal bird houses (besides the ones made on-site) and protective covers for one's hands when birding, gardening or whatever and one-of-a-kind jewelry items as well. They support local and BUY local as often as possible-a policy that has always been in place. Need seed for your feathered friends? The Wild Bird Store's is THE freshest in town. It isn't stored in some warehouse, purchased once a year like some franchises do. You can purchase ANY amount of seed, from one to fifty pounds of whatever seed's in stock. Covered bins hold a wide assortment of seeds-some tailored to attract certain species of birds and when you open the bins, you can SMELL the freshness! If seed is old, the birds can tell, and they'll stay away. Absolutely fresh seed assortment, beautiful feeders of ALL kinds, lots of accessories, everything one needs to enjoy birding, either in your backyard, or in the great outdoors is available here. I gave them the color and pattern and they instantly narrowed down the options. when I returned to Sierra Vista I documented the altitude I was at and referenced the guide I bought in the shop. Jon and his staff are really experts and if you want to attract birds to your yard and feed them well and not bother with the cheap stuff offered elsewhere, shop here and don't waste your time elsewhere. Love this store that the hubs and I found accidentally. Lady running shop was very nice and informative. We talked about hummingbirds and how to water down their food/sugar water to just provide energy. Another reviewer seems to have been offended by hearing that too much sugar makes the birds sick and shortens life span but actually it makes sense. Sugar makes people fat, sick, and shortens life span. The flowers in nature are not dripping with processed sugar. They are very lightly sweet. Be open to learning about our environment and making it a better one for our wild life when shopping here because the people that work here care. Going back today to get another awesome handmade wooden feeder and a seed block. Husband and I both agree it is beautiful and adds to beauty of our home as well as lifts our mood to see the bright beautiful birds of the Catalina mountains. read more

I drove from San Diego to Tucson to buy bird blocks to feed the quail in my backyard. I ordered 10 of the 25 lb blocks and was told I would get a 10% discount for that quantity. When I got home and opened the first box it was full of little bugs. So were several others. I also noticed my AmEx bill did not reflect the promised discount but was so discussed with the whole event decided "move on" so as to not be more stressed by these people. josh is the guy I talked to when I first called. Love this family owned shop. The store was started by Justin's dad and he and his cousin Matt carry on the family business. These guys know a lot about birds and caring for wild birds. I have been a birder for a long time and really enjoy talking to these guys and the fact that I can buy feeders that they design and fabricate on-site makes me happy. Keeping the money we spend local is a true rarity these days. This shop is a home run. read more

Great store, lots of expertise & I agree with the other two reviewers about the loquaciousness of the owner. You just have to go without being in hurry to get anywhere else because he will talk forever. The thing is, I don't know a thing about birds so it's a good education, but it's hard to actually get away from the shop. I don't think the owner has any idea how difficult this is for people to deal with, as a lot of customers just want to buy their stuff and go on to their next errand. Hope the over talkativeness doesn't hurt his business. The shop is close to my house and I know all questions will be answered so I will remain a customer. Despite my lack of bird knowledge, it's obvious the feeders are of high quality & there is a large selection, and I have no complaints about the sunflower seeds or "nuts n bugs" feed I bought - though I did not care for the latter product as it took too long to load up the feeder and the bin of "nuts n bugs" took up too much room in my refrigerator. read more
