Few things to note: 1. Glasses are expensive. 2. Lenses are expensive 3. Boutique eyeglass shops are expensive because they carry high-end designer styles, not the plastic garbage you find at cheaper stores. Don't shop at a boutique eyeglass store if you're hung up on prices because the odds are your insurance won't cover the costs. However, if you don't want to look like every other chucklehead out there wearing Warby Parker plastic trash (that still costs around $400-500 with single-vision lenses) ... Colaizzo will be your sweet spot. This shop is under new ownership, the original owner retired after decades in business. Both myself and my girfriend received superb service from Bill and we both highly recommend their attention to detail and frame options. Shop around and you'll find that their pricing is in line with any other shop in the city. The difference is that their styles are unique, even amongst their competing boutique eyeglass stores. My head is narrow and I have a very difficult time finding eyeglasses that fit my face. Normally, I might find one or two pairs that fit OK. At Colaizzo, I found six pairs, in different styles and shapes, that fit my face beautifully, along with a handful more that were acceptable. They will be getting more of my business. read more

I get great help in selecting frames for my style and the designs are great. Fit and adjustment are right on especially for bifocals. I had a weird experience here. I came for the first time with a Theo frame that had broken in half from the strain of 3 years of gentle handling, and this store said they weren't fixable. Although I thought I'd made it blindingly clear I was a graduate student on a limited income, they kept trying to convince me to spend nearly $400 on a replacement frame. Neither the store (or Theo) was especially helpful. When I called the store back later, they said they'd get back to me in "a bit". I finally called them back after two hours, and they were again too busy to speak to me. In the end, the store never actually returned my call. Thankfully, I called up Eye Gotcha - wonderful opticians in San Francisco - and they offered to fix them from a thousand miles away for $100 by replacing the frame front. Maybe this place is truly a great store -- I don't have the experience to know. But, it really felt they were more interested in making a quick sale than building a long-term customer relationship. Even though I've since finished grad school and transmogrified back into a yuppie with ample disposal income for expensive frames, I won't be buying them here. -- UPDATED 2.25.2013 AS PER OWNER RESPONSE: Actually, I've kept a backup frame and pair of lenses for a scenario like this one. That's how I had a working pair of glasses during the 1-2 month period it took Eye Gotcha to replace them by mail. The fact is: your store provided regrettably unhelpful customer service, and that is what my feedback reflected. I would encourage you to consider using the pattern of feedback you see here to grow as a service provider, rather than to suggest your customers are acting erroneously. Colaizzo Opticians is unique in my experience of opticians. Whether that's good or bad depends on what you're looking for. Camille, the owner, is a wonderful eccentric world traveler: tiny, highly opinionated, often cranky, sometimes brilliant. Their web site does not lie: they have frames you simply cannot find elsewhere in Seattle, especially but not exclusively European brands. They are NOT cheap. Do not go here expecting a bargain. You'll get a unique and beautifully made pair of glasses, but as with many things in life, you pay for what you get. Don't expect super-charming service either. They're a little too Euro-style and, well, eccentric for that. I've found the best strategy is to be firm but exquisitely polite. They are often reluctant to do repairs, as others have noticed. If they're so expensive and the service is so...er, unique...why do I give them four stars? Because the glasses I've bought from them over the years have been consistently better quality than any other glasses I've worn. Because I've been stopped by strangers who've raved over my glasses and asked where in the world I found them. And because, at the end of the day, they've given me real value for the money I've paid. So here's the deal. The glasses are amazing. They are different, one-of-kind and fantastic. The service: SUCKS. TERRIBLE. THE WORST. And it may be a little harsh, but the lady that runs that place is a bitch. I was so excited to get my new glasses, and although they were expensive they let me make payment, which was nice. They also said they would adjust them at anytime for free, I just had to walk in. They, (my glasses), have given me nothing but grief and I hate them. I don't expect them to be returned by any means, but everytime I try to get them adjusted I don't feel like they are listening to anything I am saying about the fit. They disappear into the back come back, put them on my face and tell me I look great...almost swept out the store. She actually will make you feel stupid, because she just doesn't listen nor does she let you finish your sentence. My two experiences with Colaizzo point towards price gouging the customer. The first experience was when I needed lenses for frames I had purchased elsewhere. The store quotes me a price of $400 which turned out to be $225 higher then I ended up paying at a reputable store downtown. The second experience was when I stopped by this morning to see if I could get a replacement plastic nose piece (the $.02 kind). The owner charged me $10 for a minute process to replace the nose pads. I had no other choice so I paid the ridiculous price. I am in the market for a particular pair of Oliver Goldsmith Manhattan frames, and per the Oliver Goldsmith web page, this is a local store that carries their brand. I emailed the shop to see if they had this pair in stock. I was called back the next day (good), by a female sales associate, letting me know that they had actually just sold the last pair of that style, but that if I wanted to special order, I could put 50% down and get them, or to just come in because she knows they would have something I would love. I then explained that I actually still need to see if they even look good on my face, as have not tried on. I then asked if they were a staple item in their store, and she said yes, so I asked when they would be reordered so I could go in and try on. She put me on hold to talk to manager to find out when they would be on order, and when she came back on the line, instead of answering my question, she once again kept trying to get me to come in and try other glasses as she knows I would be able to find another pair. Bottom line, they were not listening to me. I'm not in the market for a new pair of sunglasses, I have plenty. I was in the market for a $440 Manhattan frame, period, and they were more concerned about me just coming in to try something else. That her suggestion just kept being come in to my question of when they will be in again, made me never want to step foot in that store. And, after reading more of these reviews, I see I'm not the only person to run in to terrible customer service here. I just happened to be on the phone, and never set foot on the premise! I never did get a straight answer about when they would be re-ordering this style of frame. No matter how great the glasses are, the client/patient needs to feel listened to. read more

Over fifteen years, I bought three pair of glasses at Colaizzo, and it's true that you get what you pay for. Each pair fit perfectly, looked great, and lasted me many, many years. Their service is unmatched, too. My last pair lasted nine years, and they were always willing to refit, clean, and tuneup the frames for no cost. Occasionally, I had to pay a little to get a new nose pad or to replace an ear piece. But over the life of those frames, the cost was negligible. I never thought I'd do this to a pair of frames I love, but after a nap, with my lenses resting on my chest, I awoke, stood up, and stepped on my frames. They were almost unwearable, and I knew that an average frame shop wouldn't know how to fix a pair of Theo's. Crossing my fingers, I walked over to Colaizzo's. I learned that they're normally closed on Mondays. Oh no! It just happened that because they work diligently to keep fresh and super fun frames in the shop, the Queen of Colaizzo's was there! I have had many eyeglass shopping experiences where the employees have been able to be helpful/critical/honest without being rude and making me feel like I was absolutely not welcome in their store. It actually happened right after I left your place. I went to a different eyeglass store and had a pleasant and fun experience with another person who found me an awesome pair of glasses and I left feeling uplifted and satisfied. Instead of apologizing for his behavior, you are saying it's strange that I would feel that way because you pride yourself on customer service? Do you see how confused that is? You are perpetuating the problems that women face everyday by trying to gaslight me. You do not tell someone the way they felt was wrong or make them feel like it was their fault. Not only is that terrible customer service but it makes me sad that a woman and a woman business owner would do such a thing to another woman. A simple apology would have sufficed. Your reviews were already suffering before I contributed mine, and I see that I'm not the only one that thinks that your employee is rude and pretentious. This is the BEST place. I have loved every pair of perfectly made and perfectly designed glasses I have gotten over the past dozen or more years. I have a complex prescription- and Camille and her team get it right every time. My favorite part is I get compliments EVERYWHERE I go and my gorgeous frames last forever. I was in there browsing and took a picture of myself with some glasses on to get my sister's opinion (she lives on the east coast). The guy came right up to me and said, "No pictures," very rudely. I thought he was joking and tried to make a joke back. Then very stoically he repeated it again. I won't use the word I want to call him here b/c it will probably get screened and I want people to know what they are getting here. By the way, I've never wrote a yelp review before. Also, the glasses are terribly overpriced and trying WAY too hard. Expect customers to be as pretentious as the owners. The designers they carry are mostly on the weird end, though they carry a few that are very nice. The selection is very limited out in the lobby, but in the back are quite a few more and the staff brings out pairs they think would fit you. Unfortunately, the staff, especially the owner, lack any sense of your personal style. I'm by no means a prude, but the fact that you basically have 10 pairs to choose from, and the rest come from their secret closet in the back, means you are at the mercy of their tastes. 99% of the glasses they brought out were absolutely obnoxious. A good optician would realize which way my tastes lean by the 15th or 16th pair... but not these guys. Worst of all, the owner got pushier and pushier, and quickly started getting offended when I said I didn't like a pair. She would demand absolute specifics when I would put down a pair of Elton John rejects. I have never met a snobbier, more fragile optician. She would be angry and offended any time I didn't like a pair, as if she designed every hideous piece in the building. Do not go here unless your tastes match up perfectly with hers, or you'll feel like your breaking someone's heart. read more

We have had all of our prescriptions filled at COLAIZZO OPTICIANS for decades and have always had superior results. Whether it is for repair (our puppies have guilty of chewing our glasses) or specialized need glasses (computer single vision, etc) we would not consider going anywhere else. read more

All of the staff is always very nice and listens. I went to Colaizzo to look for new eyeglass frame and got terrible service. I found a frame that I like and bought it. Only afterwards did they tell me they do not help with filing out the insurance claim unlike other opticians and just handed me a form. Also I had asked them to change out the silicone temple wrap which they said they will do for free. When I came back to pick up the frames to take it to my regular optician to get the prescription lenses I noticed that they did not change out the temple wraps. When asked about it they said they would change it out when and if I was going to have them put in new lenses and I would have to pay for them to order the wraps. They also did not mentioned that due to my prescription the edge of the lenses will have to be rolled and may not fit into the frames due to the hinges being too close to the front. Luckily my regular optician was able to have the lenses shaved down to fit. The frames are extremely expensive there and the service based on my experience was crappy, and try to nickle and dime you for items that should not cost. Only go there if you have money to throw away for lousy service. read more

I stopped by here today directly after my vision check, just to browse. I really had no intention of buying anything. I asked the sales assistant to find me something "Fabulous" and she said they were sure they could find me something. Camille, the owner, said that she had exactly what I was looking for in the back and disappeared while I looked at a few frames that I thought might work for me. They were so-so, but the assistant was very cordial and helpful. Camille appeared with about 5-8 frames that were indeed "Fabulous" - so much so, that at first I thought I would never be able to decide. They all complimented my face, were striking and exceptional in appearance and really fit my description of "Fabulous." I felt the frame price was fine but was slightly taken aback by the price of lenses. Camille took the time to explain what I was really getting - had David, another very helpful colleague show me how the color would work with a pair of "polorized" lenses and honestly sold me on the whole package. She was incredibly knowledgeable and I feel like I spent less time finding the perfect frames and lens package for me. Everyone was incredibly helpful and they offered to work with me on how to pay for them. I have to mention that I had bought a pair of glasses from them previously, in 2009, and was so bowled over by the service and selection that I decided to go back to them. I highly recommend them if you are looking for a selection that is high in style and fashion-forward to be sure with an emphasis on customer service. read more

Go here for the latest Euro looks. I bought two pairs of frames from Colaizzo. One is outstanding and I'll use them until they fall apart (three years, so far so good and I've traveled the globe). The other frame from the same design team was just so-so. The products are expensive and some are too trendy for the price. So, choose carefully and walk out if you have the slightest doubt. If it feels right and you can afford it, however, spring for the extra cost. I was glad I did. The owner and staff are mercurial as the reviews show. Sometimes customer service is outstanding. At other times, it's so subpar you wonder how they stay in business. I'm in the market for new frames, but have chosen to see what else Seattle has to offer. For these prices, I want the whole consumer experience to work without a hitch. First of all, when you walk in there's barely a selection. When I asked if that was all they had, the owner (a woman) and the guy that worked there, said there were more in the back. My first thought was - why is the stock in the back? Shouldnt it be out where customers can see them and try them on? It makes no sense. Second thought, Im a grown woman who has successfully chosen eyeglasses for myself every year for the last 20+ years, why do I have to have someone pick them out for me and put them on my face? Weird, and not customer-centric. Third thought, the selection and product was 'different' but not hip. More like cool glasses for old people. Second of all, the lady (owner) was OK. But the guy was just rude. Both of them gave off a pretentious, "we-know-better-than-you" vibe that I hated. Here's the thing, my husband and I regularly buy expensive frames ($1000 or so each). So, you lost our business with your lack of service orientation and attitude. Take a slice of humble pie. Immediately after this we went to Oculus, were met with wonderful, friendly, unpretentious customer service, were told we could try on anything we wanted, and then they backed off. I never like to write a bad review for anyone, let alone a store in my neighborhood, especially during covid. However, i feel that I must forewarn anyone who goes in there that if they are working with the tall man there, you will be treated with an aloof, holier-than-thou attitude. Not only did he give off the vibe that he could care less about helping me, he also sold me a pair of glasses that I was clearly not convinced. When I asked him what he thought, he said they looked good while cleaning a pair of glasses. He clearly capitalize on my indecisiveness. The pair he sold me was an impulse buy on my end. I should have heeded my gut instinct that they did not fit my face and not trust him when he said they looked good. He never said they looked great. Isn't it his job to sell me a pair that look great, not just good? I purchased them without any lenses so after a few days, when I decided they were too big for my face after all, I went back in and asked to return them, which they denied. Now I am left with a pair of glasses that I am not happy with and a very bad taste in my mouth for Colaizzo and it's very bad customer service all the way around. If you have a high-power correction, you'll want to stop in and talk to Camille. She built her business around her own experiences with severe nearsightedness. She will understand you, your eyes, your frames, your prescription and your experiences with glasses better than you do. You'll learn a lot about yourself, your eyewear and eye habits and the reasons behind them. (She needs to write a book!) After 25 years of full-time contact lenses, I had switch to full-time glasses. It was a difficult transition for many reasons -- and Camille understood perfectly. She helped me find a frame that works not only with my Rx and face shape but also with where I am in accepting the idea of wearing full-time high-powered lenses. She fitted me in sophisticated, understated unique frames that suit me. I'll undoubtedly be back for a bolder second pair. Sharp, witty, stylish and takes no guff. She will not let you walk out of there with an ill-fitting pair of lenses. She sources internationally and does her own buying. I have lenses that after three years I continue to receive compliments. They were fashion forward at the time, and now they are right on trend. I consider that a great value. I wear glasses every day and want to feel great in them; I want to feel like they are a reflection of my personality. Would give 100 stars out of five if possible. Colaizzo is very unassuming from the outside, but they have hundreds of amazing frames for you to browse, and hundreds more in their back stock. This is not your basic eyewear store; you are not going to find generic styles, you are going to find frames that you will never want to trade in, each with strong personalities and well thought-out designs. The store inside is very well-presented, from their shelves to their business cards. My boyfriend and I went in to find himself some new glasses, and we ended up purchasing Malcolm X's horn rimmed frames, which are no longer in production and the last reserves are held by Colaizzo. Multiple eye tests were done on top of the prescriptions in order to ensure the eyewear would be a perfect fit. The frames here are not cheap, however most of their frames are made of titanium, so they will not break, and the designs themselves are singular and worth the price. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. I could not recommend this store enough; please, if you value high quality for your eyewear, stop by 1623 Queen Anne Ave. read more

I, too, had an uncomfortable and disappointing experience here. Broke my wonderfully unique frames, so set off in search of a replacement. Picked out swell new ones at Colaizzo. Expected them to be expensive, given the shop's reputation, but was totally astonished to learn the total cost would be $1,600. I did, however, sign the (exceptionally tiny) receipt and went on my way. They called later that afternoon to say they'd forgotten to measure my eyes in the frames and could I come back the next day? (A Sunday, when the shop was closed, but the young man said he lived nearby and would meet me there.) In the interim I had some serious financial second thoughts, and, since I had ordered the glasses only the day before, and no measurements had been taken, I felt comfortable asking to cancel the sale. Well....cordial immediately changed to cold. I was told in no uncertain terms that All...Sales...Are...Final! I argued that this seemed absurd, given everything, to no avail. I left, upset and angry. Later that day they called to say if I would buy the frames ($500) they would forget about the lenses. (The cost of the lenses, by the way, was $1,000! And no, my eyes don't need anything special, just the usual adjustments for age.) By now I certainly no longer wanted the frames, so refused the deal. Whereupon I was told I would then have to accept a store credit for the full amount. So I called my credit card company to dispute the charges. They went to bat for me, but didn't hold out much hope as I had, in fact, signed the (exceptionally tiny) receipt on which was printed (in exceptionally tiny font) "All Sales Final". I finally had to accept their final offer: A refund of $1,000 and a $500 store credit. (I have no idea why they insisted on the credit, as they still have the frames, but there you have it. And it will be a great gift for someone.) So yes, Colaizzo has some unique frames you won't find anywhere else. You'll be paying Nordstom prices....but the similarity definitely stops there. The happy ending of this story? Went to Eyes on Fremont. Found fabulous frames. The total cost less than half of Colaizzo's. And they fixed my old frames. For free. read more

I was looking for new glasses in April. I live on Queen Anne, so stopped by Collaizo for the first time. There were 2 women who both helped me, and both were helpful and pleasant. I bought the most beautiful glasses I've ever owned. I constantly have people stopping me & complimenting me on my glasses, especially young people. I'm 67. Every time I put them on, I feel special. I'm going in soon to see if I can tempt myself into purchasing another pair. They are costly, but worth every penny. Nothing but good things to say about the people who work there. My wife and I have together purchased a dozen or so pairs of glasses from Colaizzo, and we continue to do so both for the quality of the product (unique frames, in-house lens cutting, highest-quality optics) and for the service. Perhaps some of the negative reviewers want "hi-I'm-Jason-I'll-be-your-server-tonight" obsequiousness. I would rather have superb, meticulous, even fussy fitting, inventive repairs (a beautiful temporary fix on an earpiece while a permanent one is on order) and a truly one-on-one experience.
