They were pretty good about setting up a move on relatively short notice, but they were several hours late on the day of the move and they jacked up their prices after they already had my stuff. They didn't give an actual bill and only cited "materials" as the reason for the price change even though I had everything packed in boxes and I even physically helped them get things in to and out of the truck. They also charge a service fee just to be able to pay them. The 2 guys who showed up and moved my stuff we're nice enough but I absolutely would NOT recommend hiring this company. read more

We had a very concerning experience with Coffey Bros. Moving and would strongly caution others. We were initially quoted approximately $3,600 for our move after providing a detailed inventory multiple times and confirming everything in advance. We were reassured the move would take about 8-9 hours with 4 movers and that the total would remain close to that estimate. This move was from one house to another house within a mile of each other in the same neighborhood! On move day, the crew did conduct an inventory at the beginning but did not communicate any changes or provide an updated estimate. They proceeded to load all of our belongings onto the truck. Only after everything was loaded did they inform us that the total had increased to over $13,000 -- more than four times what we were quoted. At that point, they refused to unload any of our belongings unless we paid in full. Even after we paid approximately $12,000, they still would not begin unloading until additional payment was made. This happened late at night with all of our possessions on their truck, leaving us with no real option. We asked to speak with a supervisor to understand the charges. Although he was placed on speakerphone, he refused to speak with us or explain why the cost had increased so dramatically. Throughout the process, we were repeatedly required to sign documents on a phone that we could not properly review, and they would not explain what we were signing. We were told we had to sign to continue while under pressure due to a strict move-out deadline. The final bill included many concerning charges, including: * Repeated charges for the same items/services (exercise equipment, Peloton, TVs, glass handling) * Significant material charges (e.g., dozens of rolls of tape and excessive wrapping) that we did not authorize and explicitly asked them not to use * Additional services that were not clearly disclosed in advance *They broke our new storm door and our master King Bed Frame. At the end of the move, we were also required to provide photographs of our credit card and identification, which took over an hour. We never agreed to this beforehand and felt extremely uncomfortable given the circumstances. Overall, this experience felt highly pressured and not transparent. The final cost was dramatically higher than what was represented, and we were not given a fair opportunity to review or approve charges before being required to pay. If we did not pay in full, we were not getting our materials. I began to fear for my kids and my safety. Terrible experience.... Customers beware!!!! My mom who is 71 yrs old was looking to move and She had booked a vey simple moving job for couches, tv stand and refrigerator. She was quoted $447 for the job. She paid $250 to make the booking and then she was force to pay additional $684.12 and was threatened that they will take her items if she didn't make the payment. Movers came to the house at 8:10 and they were done well before the 2 hrs but they sat there until the billing dispute was resolved. My mom is a 71 yr old women and I feel that she was taken advantage of. This is very unethical practice as the estimated quote doubled even though there were no changes from her side. She was taken advantage off and charged ridiculous amount for a very simple moving job that took less than the original quoted amount of time Movers worked for less than the time initially quoted but she was charged for 2.5 hrs. $50 discount not applied Charged $100 extra for the refrigerator Charged $50 extra for the couch Taxes were 0 on the quote but final bill she got charged. I called and spoke to the manager (Ernest)and he told me that there was $50 discount that's not applied to the final bill, also she was charged $100 additional for the refrigerator which we had told the sales department in our in our original quote. He said he can't do anything as he is on the sales side so I asked to speak with someone who can resolve the issue and he told me there is no one I can speak to but I can send an email to the claims department. Avoid This Company! - Dishonest, Careless, and Unprofessional Our move into a brand-new home turned into a nightmare with this company. What began with a lowball estimate quickly became a bait-and-switch--our furniture was essentially held hostage until we agreed to unexpected overages. It ended with a settlement offer to keep us quiet. The crew caused extensive damage: scuffed and chipped walls, dented trim, and a damaged furniture piece that had never been scratched before. Despite paying for premium services, they failed to reassemble our Peloton, left us to unwrap and assemble items ourselves, and sent two movers who were clearly untrained. After filing a claim and waiting over a month for their investigation they offered $75, on the condition that we sign a "Release of Liability" waiver. After careful review, we found that their agreement prohibits filing complaints or lawsuits, requires confidentiality, and restricts public feedback to only honest, settlement-updated reviews. I am a single woman and felt taken advantage of by the movers. They tried getting more money from me and all I was requesting was 3 hours. they overcharge and didn't even put in my couch and mattress. The mattress and couch were left outside. I had a very bad experience with Coffey bros. I was told by a guy named Carl that It was a family-owned company and that the movers would do what I tell them and they did not. This company quoted me $1,060 to move my furniture from Illinois to Wisconsin and then did a bait and switch when we got to Wisconsin and charged me three times the amount to unload the truck and refuse to give me my furniture until I paid $2,803 and when it was all said and done they charged me $3,133.21 without my consent. And they also damaged my furniture. I immediately alerted the Mover Edgar and he said that it was impossible that the bed was not put together right and that he put it together himself and that if he came back up it would be more money. I decided not to let them come back up because I had already spent more money than I had anticipated and money that I did not have. I had someone come and inspect the bed and it was discovered that slats were missing and they didn't put the pegs on the bed either. I have an upholstered bed, which requires 10 to 12 slats. When they lifted my bed up, the bed only had two and the pegs were laying on the floor instead of attached like they should have been. They also ripped box spring and there's a huge stain on the headboard, which was not there prior to the move. My set is less than 2 years old. I contacted the company on February 17th about the charges and they denied the claim. I contacted the company on March 13th after I had the furniture inspected and they also denied that claim. They stated that they cannot accept responsibility for the damages as it is too far out and I only have 72 hours to report any damages, which is impossible as I'm still unpacking because they left my house in total disarray and I wanted to make sure that there were no other items damaged and there were. I have filed a claim what the Illinois Attorney General's office and I'm waiting for the company's response. There is no way this company has a 4.6 rating, they are very shady and very dishonest people. Do not use them. Beware! read more

I budgeted 5k based on my initial $3600 quote but I ended up paying $11,797.49 plus an added $900 in tips which the moving crew pressured me to send via Zelle. Yep. I ended up using my credit card because I simply didn't have an extra 6k laying around. Attached are pictures of some of the travesties that occurred: -my disassembled couch because they misplaced its feet -a dirty wardrobe box - an empty tv box that I was billed for -my broken candle stand -a wardrobe box full of pillows and other non fragile garden items I hired this company based in its positive reviews and timely clear communication with it's sales representative, Devon. We've moved quite a bit because my husband is military, but now that he is a disabled veteran we can no longer handle these moves on our own. The job was to move my things from my old house to their storage and then from their storage to my new home. The pick up was on 5/9 and the drop off was on 5/15 - only 25 miles across town. At my old house I was charged for 15 wardrobe boxes at $25 a pop even though 6 of them belonged to me - and they still managed to leave hangers and several coats in the closet. Also $250 for tape!!! (See photos) One of the movers broke my candle stand dropping it right in front of me. He said "ooops." Didn't even apologize for breaking my candle stand. I asked specifically for it to be wrapped right after. About an hour later I stated to them that even though it was broken, I still wanted the item. When nobody replied or acknowledged my ask, I asked again and the mover that dropped it said "We heard you!" How rude! It was raining steadily this day and I was back and forth in and out assisting and answering questions with my umbrella in tow. I sat it down for a few minutes and when I turned to look for it I see that one of them packed my umbrella (you guessed it!) in a wardrobe box. Good grief! Prior to my move I sent pictures and gave a full explanation of my items including the moving of a safe and large wardrobe. A 4 hour job turned into 12. They really should have advised me about all these extra fees for time and materials when they saw I was exceeding the quote. I called mid afternoon to speak to a rep and complained that I'm sure they misquoted me and that I initially requested them to come out and give a proper quote in which he replied, "we don't do in-home estimates due to Covid." REALLY???? In 2024 but not one the crew members were masked or followed any COVID-19 protocols. The foreman Edgar pressured me for larger tip based off the spike in the price and I almost felt obligated to do so because they had all my possessions on their truck. Upon returning my items, two men from the original crew came to the second job, which is helpful because they were familiar with what was in the boxes, This crew worked a little faster and they seem to be a little more understanding and attentive. They even complained explaining to me that the first time I had the "EDGAR crew" and they even joked about how he charged another customer over $3000 for materials. Wowzers. Moving is such a stressful time and I wish I had gone with a different company. Moving Company for a small student studio move from Forest Park (60130) to Oak Park (60301). They quoted me $462.25 for 2 hours, assuring me several times that everything was included -- travel time, materials, and even bed frame assembly/disassembly. I confirmed repeatedly that there would be no hidden fees, and they said, "everything is included." After paying a $260 deposit by credit card, they claimed they never received it and made me fill out a credit card authorization form. Later, I discovered they charged me twice ($520 total). On moving day, I had everything packed -- just 10 boxes, a small sofa, study desk and chair, bookcase, and mattress. The movers couldn't even disassemble my bed frame, so I had to leave it behind, yet they still charged me for assembly/disassembly and for a mattress cover I supplied myself. When the move was done (around 3 hours total), they presented a final invoice of $840.84 -- nearly double the quote. When I questioned it, they refused to release my belongings unless I paid immediately via Zelle. I was pressured to pay on the spot just to get my items back. In total, this moves cost me $1,100.83 instead of $462.25. They also never refunded the extra $260 deposit. This company is unprofessional, dishonest, and unethical. DO NOT USE THIS CRIMINAL COMPANY. They charged 4x of the signed non-binding quote and stole two trucks loads of property when we wanted to refute the final bill. A classic moving scam. We had to call the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to help us retrieve the property they were holding. By law, you are able to pay 110% of the original signed non-binding quote and they must finish delivery. After delivery they have 30 days to charge you the rest and you can dispute charges. This company blatantly and repeatedly broke the law until ICC forced them to deliver under threat of state authorities taking immediate action. The company then delivered everything on the front lawn, probably out of spite. Please check the BBB website and you'll see that they are unactedited and suspended due to fraudulent behavior. They are incredibly predatory and the movers were unprofessional and had the nerve to call me and request a larger cash tip after damaging the freight elevator in the building. They estimate you very low (Ernest) to get your business, they do not disclose the "fees" ($25 for a used box to cover a TV. $25 for a 1/2 of a box used to cover a stand up mirror, $25 for a TV handling fee) then once you have been moved out of your home they hold your items until you pay an invoice that has doubled your estimate (after the 250 required deposit). If you don't pay they haul ur stuff to storage and begin to charge storage fees.. it's a scam. Don't use this company. They have many BBB complaints and customers that have been price gouged. WORST MOVING COMPANY EVER! RUN! I have never written a company to complain about issues or incompetence, but I am extremely disappointed in the service I received today. I hired the team thinking you all were the number 1 moving company in Chicago, but I'm thoroughly disappointed for a number of reasons. I payed $1200+ for a small 2 bedroom condo and they did not complete the move. Half of my furniture is still strewn around my home. I have to be out in 2 days and now have to hire another company to complete the job. 1. My contract was for 3 people and I only received 2. This significantly lengthened the time to move and they only moved half my house. I now have to hire another company to do the rest. I have a top exec and his family moving into my condo in two days and now have to figure out how to move the rest of my things. 2. Early on in the move, the two man team offered to come back and move me outside of the company for $150/hr. I believe they took their time on purpose in hopes that I would hire them outside of Coffey Bros. Now I sit here in a house full of furniture which needs to be removed by tomorrow at the latest so I can have my painters come in. 3. They scratched up my expensive West Elm Dining table and laid my large couch cushion on the floor of the storage unit. Now it has dirt, oil and water on it. I know need to go to my storage unit and check other boxes as they were dropping them hard and sliding them with their feet..even the boxes that clearly said "fragile" were being mishandled. 4. Ernest the Sales Lead was extremely rude, blamed me for not letting the company know that only 2 men showed up in the beginning of the move. How is that my fault or responsibility? I did ask the movers how I would be compensated and they called dispatch. Ernest was extremely unprofessional and doesn't have one ounce of customer service decorum. Please do not use this moving company. Here is our story. My family and I were cleaning out my in-laws' home in central Illinois as they are both recently passed. We booked with Coffey Bros. because of their high reviews. They knew we had only a small amount of items that were precious to our family. We were quoted 1300 bucks to make 2 stops, one in Chicago and another in the suburbs, to drop off stuff at our own homes. They told us they would meet us at 8 a.m. on 5/19. At 9 am my wife called them, and they explained that they were delayed and the movers would be there at 10. At 10 am I called and was told they would be there any minute, and they connected us with the driver who told us they were on another job and would be there at 12:30 p.m. (The original person from the office told us the office doesn't open till 8 a.m.; which is a lie because the crew was on another job.) Eventually, they showed up 4 1/2 hours later and were on their way by 1:30 p.m. By this time, my wife and I were back in our Chicago home anticipating their arrival. Well, at 3:30, they called to tell us their truck broke down. At 6:30 PM they called to tell us their truck was fixed and they were on their way. They arrived at 8:15 p.m. As they were taking out our stuff, they said, "Oh, you need to pay before we can take any of the stuff off the truck." They called a guy , I think his name was Eric, and they started going through what stuff we had. They quoted us a price that was 300 dollars more. Even after all of our headaches, phone calls, and apologies, they still happened to charge us 1600 dollars without any chance of compensation. What makes it worse is my in-laws' grandfather clock is completely destroyed. Sadly, they expect us to go through claims and get it settled. Ladies and gentlemen of the internet, I do not know who is writing all these great reviews; it must be AI or their own family. There is no customer service, and they really don't care about people's possessions . I asked for a supervisor at least 7 times when I called them, and nobody ever called me back or they would tell me they were busy. When I got a supervisor, I was told that they did not have any power to change or compensate me. Please do not use this company. I spent an hour on the phone with the sales person, went room by room and they quoted me 2400.00 then once they had all my property on their truck they gave me a bill for 4900.00 they then would not allow me to get any of my property until I paid the higher price and told me they would auction and or dispose of my property if I did not pay them by a due date. They sent me movers tariffs that basically state they can do whatever they want without even asking the customer. I waited more than three hours for movers to come then they were told I had an one bedroom and the price would be $900 which in reality, I have two bedroom so the price skyrocketed to $2300. The team leader of the movers kept showing "things" that were being "tacked on" to the bill, while my belongings were being held hostage in their truck. I paid these **** $600 tip for peeing on my bathroom floor, leaving ALL the packing material and a great deal of my belongings in my garage, because I refused to pay 400 plus More $ for another hour,and damaging the corner of a wall. DO NOT HIRE. Better business bureau has 55 complaints against them already. This company uses fraud and coercion to get you to pay at least double for your move over your initial quote. Read the fine print on your quote as they will charge them but also more than the fine print. Their dispatch staff ( Anthony)are trained to hook you with a low quote even while you go through a lengthy process of declaring every item in the inventory of your house. Then as the day goes on, your quote will increase due to day of "additional services". They will take pictures of your stuff, and send it back to headquarters/dispatch who perhaps help dvise the team on how to upcharge you for certain items. They will charge you extra for "handling" your queen or full sized bed, in addition to the assembly and dissembly fee. They use unnecessary slow and excessive packing techniques to drag out the job by hours ( which was honestly more than my cheap furniture was worth!). They also didn't bring a big enough truck. So it took two trips and much more time. Then they use coercion. They stand in your new home and refuse to unload your stuff, threatening to take it to a facility, if you don't pay the upcharges. I almost called the police. They were unable to complete assembly on my king bed but had to pay upcharges, full bill, in advance, before they took anything off the truck. Rude when you call them to discuss, or unavailable (which racks up your hourly bill). EDGAR, DENNIS and the other movers act nice, do work hard to lift etc so I typed them because I'm a good human but I suspect they know exactly how to rip you off, slow down the move and then they are the messengers to use coercion to force you to sign off, or nothing comes off the truck. This was the second time using this company and the last.. The first time I used them about 5 years ago was great, this time was not. I was given an estimate for a 2 bedroom move which actually was less items then a full 2 bedroom move, and was estimated it would take approximately 3 hours and they went two movers. I moved out and into an elevator building so stairs was not an issue. The movers were nice but too slow and one of the guys were new so Edgar had to keep explaining to the other guy what to do.. I was charged double of what my estimate was even after putting inventory on the list of what was needed to move and took them 5 1/2 hours. This is unacceptable as a moving company should know how long a move of items should take once the inventory is submitted and was only 3 mile travel to location.. have yet to hear back from their customer service claim department. Also before paying was asked what balance was as they add 4% interest in any credit card and Leah from dispatch gave one price then two minutes later when the move Edgar was requesting me to sign credit card authorization it was for approx $13.00 more. i wish I could give 0 star. i had items stolen. someone walked in on me when using the bathroom on the other side of the property from where they were workin. My screen was damage, I think purposely cut when I reminded them to set up the bedroom furniture because it was not damaged when I saw them bringing in the furniture through the patio doors. The movers would not take the furniture off the truck until paid in full over $3,000 to move across town from a two bedroom apartment to a house. I could move out of state for that amount. Finally, the movers stood around waiting for individual tips and padded the moving time to accommodate that. I have a text message to prove the shakedown for additional money.
