This is one of my favorite spots to visit when I am back home in Ballston Spa. It's a go-to that's always on my list! It is a great place to work, as well as to meet friends. They have a great variety of substantial foods (good for breakfast or lunch) ranging from pastries to bagels to sandwiches. I also appreciate all of the different flavored coffee options that they have (not just adding sugary syrups, but having coffee roasts themselves that are flavored). And the coffee it also self-serve. This decor is very eclectic and worldly, with globes lining the front windows and luggage sets stacked in the back. It provides a very small-town feel and atmosphere which is nice when you want to escape the world for a bit. read more

Came in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the variety of lunch foods available. The 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup is a good deal st $8.25. I tried the carrot ginger soup which was a special; the carrot pieces were not puréed all the way (which may be your preference but was not mine). They serve breakfast sandwiches all day. Good music. Only one disappointment. When I ordered, "16 oz latte with a half a Splenda." I was told that Splenda was on the bar. Stopped into Coffee Planet while waiting for a spot at the Whistling Kettle. We were just going to grab some coffee and a small bite to eat. When we saw it from the street it looked warm, welcoming and cute. Then we opened the door. The lady at the counter in her LOVE shirt made a point of saying as little as possible to us, speaking mostly in grunts and shrugs. We ordered a coffee, a latte and an egg and cheese on a croissant. They were out of croissants so we chose an everything bagel. That's when I saw another girl behind the counter beating our eggs in a bowl. Awesome, they're fresh! Then I saw her place the eggs in the microwave and nuke them to death. Is it really too much trouble to have a small skillet and provide a better quality product when you're going out of your way to make them fresh? The bagel was ok. A lot of toppings, but otherwise unimpressive. I also remember taking note of the girl smacking and popping her gum while she prepare our food. Not exactly hygienic or professional. It took us a minute to find the sugar/cream area which was pointed out to us by a head nod from the counter lady. It's positioned behind the register and amid tables of patrons. A simple restructure of the space would fix this and make the flow more apparent. The latte and coffee were fine and the medium size was larger than expected. Nothing amazing about the taste, which I was hoping they would be since the place was so full despite the rude staff, poor quality of food and general appearance of the place. Put something on the tables to make them more inviting! A single flower, a sugar packet holder, anything would work better than the nothing that exists now. The music was good -- low key mix of Jack Johnson, DMB, etc. Also, another layout problem... If you sit in the back room (which has most of the tables) be prepared for loud, disgruntled banging. One of the girls brought dishes to the back area and threw them loudly into the sink. I don't understand why this back room doesn't have full length walls and a real door vs saloon style. To really drive home the culture of the business, as we were leaving, a third girl was taking the trash out. She got to the door first and said excuse me, then proceeded to walk out with the trash bags ahead of us. Had she hesitated, we probably would have held the door for her, but she was on a mission and we were in the way. Worse, we left with the smell of trash in our nose. Fitting. Benefits: - big portions - fast service - space to spread out and work - good music Things to work on: - customer service and professionalism - food quality - layout of the space - loud back room - culture of the brand.. No one seem accountable or cares enough about the small things. Apathy should be the death of a business, but without competition, they continue to thrive. Sad. Edit - trying to figure out why I was so upset with this business, it occurred to me that the problem has to be coming from the business owner. The entire staff wouldn't behave the way they did unless the owner accepted it and bred that behavior themselves. Unless the owner sees these reviews as a real opportunity to change and grow, I don't see us returning in the future. I'd rather wait an hour in the cold for The Whistling Kettle. read more

Nothing against Starbucks (consistently good coffee and espresso) but it is really nice to have a place like Coffee Planet nearby as a reminder of what a coffee house was like before huge corporations took over the cafe business. Coffee Planet is not perfect, but they have great coffee and espresso in a nice location in Ballston Spa. Pro: Great coffee and espresso. Homemade ice cream. Good selection of freshly made sandwiches and snacks. Great atmosphere. Con: The things that Starbucks brings to the table (professional service, consistent cleanliness, speed of service) are a little lacking. The employees seem to have a bit of a hippie attitude, and occasionally seem to be more focused on chit-chatting with each other than helping customers. I stopped here on my way to Vermont from Ohio. I walked around the small town to find a place to eat and this was the only interesting option. They had a half sandwich and cup of soup for $5.95 (similar to the Panera Bread deal). I got the hummus sandwich with sprouts and butternut squash soup. The "half" sandwich was huge and is a normal person's full sandwich. The hummus tasted a bit salty for my taste, and their sprouts were a piece of lettuce. It tasted fine though. The soup was very rich and had an odd consistency. Overall, I was pleased with my choices, making Coffee Planet a nice, cheap spot for an on-the-road meal. I feel bad not reviewing coffee at a coffee shop! From what I saw on menus, they are very interested in fair trade coffee and supporting local artists. That's always a sign of a good, local coffee joint. read more

Inconsistent results. I'm here often and I get the same iced mocha every time and the drink varys so much depending on who makes it. When they get it right, it's delicious. But some days it too strong, other days it's so chocolatey it's basically chocolate milk. Also the price tends to vary quite a bit. Some days I get coffee and bagel and I've seen the price vary between $8ish to $11-$12ish. Not sure if they use a recipe book for drinks but they need to. I go to other coffee shops and it doesn't matter who's working, the drink is the same every time. Consistency desperately needs improving. read more

It was good but not great. I ordered my regular bacon egg and cheese on a raisin bagel and it was 6.30. Far more expensive then other bagel shops. I dont drink coffee so i cant comment on it but the bagel had too much egg and that made it hard for me to taste the bagel which should be the focus point in the sandwich. read more

Well, I have to say, that the people working this Monday are the happiest people I've ever met. Listening to some music, conversations and making a nice cup of Mexican Mocha(with whip cream). There seems to be some idiosyncrasies that this place has, such as a contest for drawing on their cups. I thoroughly enjoyed this place on a rainy day while washing laundry across the street. Great atmosphere, food, and service. There are lots of drink and food selections, and for the most part they taste good. I will mention that there are no pumps for the Tourani syrups for coffee, so the employees just dump an absurd amount into your drink and it ruins the drink, so I just skip any drinks that come with the syrups now. But the bagels are great, their flavored cream cheeses are great, and the employees are always SO nice even when it's busy. read more

We spent a week's worth of mornings at Coffee Planet (with one exception) while visiting a college friend who lives in Ballston Spa. He's not much of a morning person, and we're coffee drinkers with a toddler, so it worked out great. We felt incredibly welcomed, and the food and coffee were wonderful. If you're in the mood for a really zippy breakfast, try the jalapeno bagel for your bacon egg & cheese. The bagel and schmear did not skimp in the least on the cream cheese. And the staff was more than happy to heat up sausage and egg on a plate for our two-year-old. The wifi was great, and our toddler really loved checking out all the globes in the window to see how far away our home (Missouri) was. The only day we didn't come by here, we actually tried to, only to find a sign on the door that they would not be opening that day (a Sunday). Not sure what was going on, but we walked to another restaurant less than a block away and were happy to head back to Coffee Planet the following morning. read more

Definately a fan of a local sustainable coffee house. The service is always friendly when I go and the coffee/non-coffee drinks are always made with care to specifications. The food is good! It's always hard to find a coffee house with a menu that has both good coffee and good food. Coffee Planet has succeeded. Dessert case is always looking yummy. I ordered a white chocolate toffee bar. To my surprise, the barista warmed and plated it complete with garnish and a fork! Yum. My companion had a black/white cookie that was spongy and dense...delish. The chai tea latte is good, with perfectly steamed foamy-ness, but a bit on the bland side. I prefer a bit of bite in my chai. They have live music often, especially on First Fridays when the businesses in the town of Ballston Spa sponsor events and stay open late (9 p.m. is late up here). A great place for breakfast, lunch, lite dinner or a snack. Chill with friends. They recently added a wine bar. It's small, but adorable. We were in coffee mode so we shall try the vino next time. Plenty of seating. Order at the counter and the barista will bring it out to your table. They will clear the table of your dishes, but you can toss any paper products. They recycle. The store is sort of split so if there is live music but you really want to continue that lively conversation you can sit farther away from the band and talk. read more

I've given this place a few trys and everytime I get increasingly disapointed. The first time I came here, around this time last year, my mother and I waited about 20 minutes just for bagels before I went up to the counter to ask the young girls who were talking to each other and eating their own food why we hadn't recieved our food, when we paid for it. Apparently, though it had not been at all busy, they had lost our order slip. One of the girls showed me that they write their orders on pieces of paper that are smaller than a post-it that go missing often and rolled her eyes at me when I suggested they get bigger slips to avoid that. Last week when I stopped by, I couldn't help but get aggrivated at the little bald guy, (who I guess owns the place?) who likes to have conversations with his regular customers right at the counter where other customers order their food. I couldn't hear a thing the girl at the counter taking my order was saying because of this guy talking right next to me. I noticed the girl was getting frustrated at him as well. I ordered a turkey sandwhich to bring to work for my lunch and had to spend more money later that day to buy a new lunch because the turkey tasted like it had sat in a fridge for a month (you know that salty nasty taste). I had a coworker of mine try a bite to confirm that the turkey had indeed gone bad at least a week beforehand. Never spending money here or recommending this place again! read more

Cute, typical small town coffee house. Local maps and newspapers available by the front door. Their muffins are on the oily side and my palmier was soft and bland, rather than crunchy and sweet. I ate the edges and tossed the rest. They have about 6 or more varieties of drip coffee on tap: I had a decaf Sumatra that had a not so pleasant aftertaste that stayed with me the entire day. The hubby lived in B-Spa before I moved to NY (then upgraded to Saratga Springs) and I spent a few days at the Planet studying for the bar exam and taking advantage of the free wi-fi, which is hit or miss. It kept disconnecting. How annoying. I ordered the bagel-egg sandwich twice. Both times were bad. The egg was rubbery and gross. The atmosphere and the small town conscious vibe makes it worth time spent here. Just don't get anything more complex than toast to eat. read more

Was in the city of Ballston Spa for the week and pasted this place while on route 50 and always wanted to try their coffee. Well I wasn't the only one thinking about it. As I enter there was a pretty good line, I didn't mind because it gave me time to look at their menu. I ended up ordering a bagel sandwich on a toasted everything bagel with bacon, egg and cheese on it and a medium coffee. I was pleasantly surprise that they actually use REAL eggs to make their sandwiches here. No precooked/prepackaged eggs here! The coffee was just ok for me, I like a coffee that I can actually taste the coffee without being overly strong. Theirs was teetering on being overly strong, even when I put creamer in it. The sandwich was delicious. Fresh ingredients are all used here and you could totally tell. I was FULL after eating the bagel sandwich. I will come back just for one if those bagel sandwiches. read more

I've been a patron of Coffee Planet since I can remember. Any time I need to meet anyone, I suggest meeting them here. The food is fresh, reasonably priced and delicious, the menu is simple and the girls working there will pretty much make you anything you ask for. It's a friendly atmosphere with comfortable seating, homemade ice cream, and delicious espresso drinks and coffee. They usually have calm music playing: Cat Stevens, John Mayer, etc. I've never had a bad experience here and could sit in the cafe for an hour with a book happily. read more

This is a review of the food. My wife, sister, and parents, and I came here for lunch on Saturday. We ordered sandwiches, and some of us soup. I was disappointed that the roasted red pepper soup that was on the chalk board was gone for the day, and it was weird how when they told me this that they didn't bother to wipe it off so others wouldn't be under the same impression. Bizarre. Whatever. I had the 1/2 BLT with chicken noodle soup, and my wife had the hummus sandwich with different vegetables on it. We both enjoyed our sandwiches, and the bread was nice. The waitress forgot to bring my wife's water that she ordered, but when she asked, the waitress happily remedied this. The chicken noodle soup was tasty - not salty and with a bit of lemon juice (?) for acidity. It was a nice touch. If looking for a quick lunch next time in BSpa, we'll come back. read more

I ordered an organic coffee and a sandwich on my visit. The coffee was delicious and it really hit the spot. The sandwich also would have been awesome had it not been absolutely soaking wet. I asked for dressing on it, but it was quite literally drenched. Don't get my wrong - it was still delicious, but it was ridiculous. I wish they had rationed their liquid a bit, seeing as how sandwiches are much more enjoyable when they're not soggy. I have hopes that if I were to order the same thing and skip the dressing, it would be great. I'll go again next time I have like 30 minutes to spare to make sandwiches for my friends and me. Coffee Planet is a really cute cafe, and, being new in town, I made a point to. Check it out. I didn't know it was close to closing time, and the woman glared at me as I ordered and then proceeded to talk badly about customers leaving a mess and that there better be $50 in the tip jar. I've worked in restaurants for years, and we all feel like that at closing time but you never do that in front of customers. The cherry pie was good, but the chicken salad sandwich I ordered was awful, and the service made a really bad impression. read more
