There's something of a shortage of cafes in Phibsboro in Dublin 7. It's as if the Celtic Tiger influx of places like Insomnia forgot this north side village. So the recent(ish) arrival of Coffee Addiction was a welcome one. Located on North Circular Road, just before St Peter's Church, it serves the usual selection of teas, coffees, breakfasts and lunches, and the food on display actually looks above average. But I've eaten there twice now and both meals were more like just average.
The first time was for early morning scrambled eggs, which were perfectly fine were it not for the fact that I didn't eat my toast and the waitress made me feel like I'd committed some sort of crime. I suspect she thought she was being helpful when she pointed out to me that the 'next time' I came in I could ask for the eggs minus the bread. However her tone was a tad on the sharp side so it sounded as if she was scolding me for leaving my carbs behind.
The second time I ate there was for a Sunday lunchtime toasted cheese and ham sandwich that was distinctly underwhelming. There was nothing wrong with it, but there was nothing right with it either and I reckon I would have made a nicer one for myself at home.
To be fair the coffee is very good and when you ask for a large one you get a large one. But I'm not sure that's enough to entice me back there, especially when it's not particularly cheap for what it is. And speaking of money, when you go in you have to order at the till and they ask you to pay up front before you've even sat down. OK, so they don't want people doing a legger but there is something a little disconcerting about the fact that they feel the need to do this. They may as well be telling every punter that comes through the door that they don't trust them. read more
