I have debated writing this review for months because I truly don't like to leave bad reviews or disparage businesses. However I believe my disappointment with this salon and the amount of money I spent warrants a review. First off, my hair stylist was nice but she made a rude remark about the bangs I had cut and about the hair products I was using. I have a tight budget and was doing my best so I was a bit hurt by that. She said she would fix the bangs. However people told me it looked worse after the haircut while I got compliments on my bangs before. I also agree that they looked worse after my haircut at CODE, and now it's going to take longer to grow out. And then she was kind of pushy trying to get me to have my hair curled at the end even though I never curl my hair - little did I know this was to hide how uneven the haircut looked when my hair was straight (I have straight hair). It was so bad I couldn't imagine going out like that and I had to fix it myself - it looks so much better now that I fixed it. I wish I had taken a picture of the unevenness but I was so distraught I didn't think to do so. It looked like 2 different lengths and was very blunt. My boyfriend agreed that it looked terrible. I only asked for a simple trim so there is really no reason I can think of for the way it looked. Lastly, I trusted this person and I was on a tight student budget but I bought the expensive conditioner she recommended truly thinking it would help my hair. After months of consistent use I am confident it is one of the worst conditioners I've ever used. My hair was definitely in better condition with the drugstore conditioner I used to use that the stylist disparaged. All in all, I went to this salon and spent over $200 and ended up only wishing I hadn't gone. I could've gotten a much better haircut for much less elsewhere :/ Edit: I added a picture of the hair right out of the salon curled as I didn't take any pics of it straight before I evened it out. Being new to the SF Bay Area I chose CODE salon based on their website. I then called and had a very pleasant consult on the phone with Zo. She made me feel confident that she understood my goal of achieving the perfect shade of blonde to blend in with and cover my grays. Once I got there, everyone was so pleasant and helpful. I came here, hoping these guys were top notch. I had wanted light pink/ ice pink hair. Much to my immense dissatisfaction. I now have patchy, processed gray/blonde hair. It's damaged to the point I really cant do anything with it. I may have to just cut it all off. "At least you can pull off a really good halloween witch." - My coworker, about my "new" hair color. I don't think I have cried so hard about my hair in my entire life. After my coworker commented on it and and everyone laughed, I wanted to just crawl into a hole and give up the ghost. This was probably the worst experience I have ever had. I feel hurt, ugly, betrayed, and bamboozled. The bleaching session was 7 hours, 900 plus dollars. I literally spent 1000 dollars (taxes/tips) to look like a hag. Now, this wasn't my first rodeo bleaching my hair, I went for a color consultation in August. Sammi said the request was easily doable, but advised I should get a haircut first to make sure the ends wouldn't melt off. I scheduled and got the haircut. They couldn't lift everything, leaving orange patches. They said they could color correct in a few weeks but in the meantime they needed to even the tone. They toned it light gray, mostly grey blonde. So now instead of vibrant hair, I have a patchy damaged mess that looks like a bad box dye job. Its so bad I cant really trust them to fix it at this point, its like asking the person who repaired your car wrong- to repair it again. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Just money washed down the drain, and humilation that will last with me for the rest of my life. read more

I'm someone who is quite hesitant when it comes to haircuts but my stylist (becca_sfhairstylist) put me at ease. She walked me through each element of my requested style, confirming the length. During the cut, as she worked through each section, she walked me through what she was doing. I have very fine hair which does not hold any form (waves or curls), but during our session, Becca walked me through techniques and products that could help. I usually felt one of two ways after a haircut: utter remorse or underwhelmed but I can honestly say, I am thrilled with my new cut! read more

Two weeks ago, went to a hair dresser who colored my hair in red instead of the color requested, needless to say how devastated I was. I needed someone of Louise's caliber with an artistic eye to develop a plan to get rid of the red, she spent 4 hours and was methodical on her approach and brought my hair back to life. Got my hair cut from Andrea! I stopped going to salons for a long time because I typically had bad experiences. Andrea fantastic and listens closely to your hair preferences and needs and gives great advice on style and care. Hair cut: Service took about an hour total including wash, cut, and drying/styling. I have long, thick, and slightly wavy hair (type 2A). I got layers to achieve a more weightless feel, and curtain bangs to frame my face and hide baby hairs. The products added reduced the frizz I had going in and added shine and softness without adding weight to my hair. I didn't lost a lot of length/inches either. Service: I used their online booking to make an appointment which was easy to use and let me put in my contact information and payment information. I was a first time customer so I had a phone call in advance of my appointment to ensure I booked the right stylist and service. Day of my appointment, I was promptly greeted with a tour and seated in the comfortable waiting area. Location: Right above a new coffee shop. Entrance was the stairs right in front after you enter the door next to the optometrist office. Parking: Street parking available on 4th St. or Harrison St. I paid $9 for 3 hours to be safe but I could've gotten away with 1.5-2 hours. read more

Courtney has been my colorist for a year now and I have always left feeling so happy. She is amazing at what she does. Before I started seeing her, my hair was damaged and a mousey brown color, so during our consultation she made sure to listen to what my color goals were, and helped me understand the process of going from my natural color to blonde by micro-foiling. Since then, I've seen her every ~3 months for highlights and she is super quick and efficient. Throughout the process she is kind, funny, patient, and genuine. My most recent appointment with her was yesterday, and I've always wanted to have lavender in my hair. She is a MASTER at her craft and blended my color so well. My experience at this salon was over the top wonderful from beginning to end. I had a haircut done at another salon the day before I went to CODE. My hair was quite long before that so this was a big cut for me. I was pretty disappointed with the cut and realized I wasn't going to be able to live with it. I found CODE online and although I typically cannot afford to go to a salon of this quality and caliber, I decided to go for it because I needed expert help in a hurry. No problem booking a next day appointment online. From the moment I stepped in the door to go up the stairs I immediately felt like I was walking into a more calm and peaceful environment. It is truly beautiful inside. I was welcomed right away and paired with Becca. I think it was meant to be. Becca was so warm and understanding of my situation. She listened to my concerns and I felt like we clicked right away. Any awkwardness and anxiety I was feeling before I came in was washed away. I felt totally comfortable like I was hanging out with a friend and she happened to be cutting my hair. She took what I had envisioned I wanted my hair to look like and made it a reality. I would go so far to say it was an emotional experience as I started to see my hair change in the mirror right before me. And may I just say while I'm talking about the environment, even though it was bustling, it felt spacious, airy, and private. THIS WAS THE BEST HAIRCUT I HAVE EVER HAD! I highly recommend Becca! I had a confirmed color consult scheduled for 530pm -- you can't schedule coloring services w/o an initial consult. When I arrived at 525pm, the receptionist said she had called me "like 5 min ago and left a voicemail and everything" and that the colorist was not in or running behind -- she said both in our conversation so it's unclear to me. The receptionist mentioned she could get me in with another colorist in 40- 70 min and asked if I wanted to wait. I declined to reschedule and wait around the salon for an undetermined amount of time. The reason for the 1 star is the receptionist lied and never did call. How do I know? There was no missed call and my voicemail box has been full since 2021 -- there is no way to leave a voicemail Employees don't show up or run late, but the important part is how the business reacts to these adversities. This salon clearly lacks the ability to communicate to its customer and is deceitful. Ask yourself, if a salon can be this careless with a new customer, how will the salon treat your during your services? read more

I was here several months ago for the first time to get my hair cut and colored. I had purchased a groupon and then paid extra to upgrade my partial balayage to a full balayage. I was very excited because of the great reviews I saw on Yelp and how pretty the salon was! Per their website, a "consultation" is required prior to any coloring and so I went in to get that done shortly after I bought the Groupon. The "consultation" lasted maybe 10 minutes max, which was shorter than my commute to even get there. After this initial appointment, I then proceeded to schedule my coloring/cutting session and was told that the whole process would take approx 3 hours. During the day of my appointment, I was offered water or coffee while I waited for my turn. Sam was my colorist and I had someone else as my stylist. This review is low mainly because of the experience I had with the coloring. Sam was great at keeping up conversation and making me feel at ease. However, halfway through coloring, she said that she hadn't realized I had so much hair and so she wouldn't be able to complete the full balayage. She said she would color more on the outside and leave the inside as is. I was not happy about that but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to make a big scene. BUT looking back, I should have expressed my unhappiness at that time because what she did is not fair to the client. I had also paid extra for my full balayage so should have received the complete session. Plus, Isn't the whole point of the "consultation" to review this all the details and adequately schedule the appropriate amount of time?? The atmosphere and environment of the salon is great but I feel like it was inappropriate for my session to be cut short because they did not estimate the amount of time correctly. Not sure if I'll be coming back since the prices are pretty steep for not great service. read more

Went a few days ago for a full balayage from Angelica, who as always NAILS it!!! The salon was extremely clean and everyone took distancing and mask precautions. I felt extremely safe-- they even take everyone's temperatures before allowing us in for the service. They also limited the amount of services they booked so I only saw 1-2 other clients in there at the same time as me.... which was amazing considering how big the space is. Awful experience with a haircut and color on a recent visit. The haircut was just unacceptable. It was literally uneven and unlike what I asked for. I immediately found another hairdresser and had to pay to get it fixed. Second, they made a huge deal out of a small temporary shampoo colored lock of hair and told me that they can't color my hair because of that. The number of interactions I had to get them to agree to die my hair was literally ridiculous. I had to do multiple consultations: 2 in person and several on the phone. After this I just went to another hair person who didn't even mention it and did a great job. Stay away. This place used to be pretty good, but it's really gone downhill. read more

For context, I said I wanted a layered cut with curtain bangs and showed him a reference photo with it, and he had everything down to a T. I was honestly a bit nervous because I had always got my hair done in Korea and heard so many horror stories about cuts in the state. Code peeps reached out after my last review to see if i wanted to go in for a complimentary do over, i was a bit skeptical but decided to take them up on the offer because my haircut was scaring my cat and there was always the option to just shave my head and start all over if they messed it up. I saw Louise who is the owner, she was very nice, funny and understanding , she took time to listen to my concerns .My hair feels understood and validated. She fixed the weird rat-tail kind of layers that had declared independence from rest of my hair for past 10 days ago. She tried her best to fix the friar tuck bangs , since they were so short she advised patience rather than attempting to thin them out but she did give me some styling tips for calming the bang curtains. She also said i could go back for a complimentary bang fix session once it grows a little bit which was very nice of her to offer since this was already a complimentary appointment . The cut looks so much better, like my cat immediately started to cuddle when I got home , something which he has been refusing to do for 10 days ( coincidence-me thinks not..) . My experience with Louise was worth five stars I'm giving four stars to average out the last experience with the other hair stylist and for 10 days of lost cat cuddles.I would def go back and see Louise and totally recommend her. read more
