She told me she could do it, but unfortunately, it became clear during the haircut that she did not know how to achieve the style. She cut my hair short and then tried to use a hairdryer and comb to make it look like the pictures, but it did not work. I showed her the reference photos again and asked if she could get help from someone else. She asked a colleague, who showed her how to cut the style, but she still seemed unsure how to do it. Eventually, the owner had to step in and finish the haircut for me. For a long-hair haircut that cost about $100 total ($85 for the haircut plus a $15 tip), I was very disappointed with the experience. At this price point, I expected the stylist to be able to achieve the hairstyle she had confirmed she could do, or to be upfront from the beginning if it was outside her expertise. Unfortunately, based on my experience, it was not worth the price or time.

I've been a loyal client of Linda's at Union Cuts for several years now, and I can confidently say she's the best hair stylist I've ever worked with. As a 30-something professional, I've tried my fair share of salons around the city, but none compare to the experience Linda provides. What sets Linda apart is her genuine care and attention to detail. She never rushes through a cut - instead, she takes her time to ensure every detail is perfect. Her technique is so relaxing and methodical that I've genuinely dozed off in the chair more than once! There's something incredibly luxurious about the entire experience that makes it feel less like a routine haircut and more like a rejuvenating appointment. Linda has an incredible memory for her clients. She always remembers exactly how I prefer my hair styled, often recalling specific preferences from visits months prior. This personal touch makes every appointment feel tailored and special. Her professionalism combined with her warm, thoughtful personality creates the perfect salon atmosphere. I've referred nearly half a dozen friends to Linda over the years, and every single one has thanked me afterward. They've all become regular clients themselves, which speaks volumes about the consistency of her excellent work. Beyond the exceptional service, Linda's prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality you receive. In a city where premium haircuts can easily cost a fortune, her affordable rates make luxury accessible. Plus, her scheduling is remarkably flexible - I can usually get an appointment the same day I call, or within a day or two at most, which is rare for stylists of her caliber. If you're looking for a stylist who combines technical skill with genuine care for her clients, Linda at Union Cuts is your answer. She's earned every bit of success she's achieved, and I can't recommend her highly enough. You won't find better service anywhere else in the city. Highly recommended - Linda deserves your business! read more

I can't say enough good things about Linda at Union Cuts! If you're looking for a top-tier haircut from someone who truly cares about her work and her customers, look no further. From the moment you walk in, Linda greets you with the warmest smile and genuine kindness. She makes an effort to bond with her customers and always remembers to ask about important things in their life. I especially like chatting with Linda about our shared love of running. The quality of her haircuts is exceptional. Linda is a true perfectionist: she takes her time with every cut, making sure every detail is just right. While other barbers elsewhere push you in and out in 15 minutes, Linda consistently takes a full 30 minutes (sometimes more) to ensure everything meets her high standards. The result? You leave looking your absolute best, every single time. And the best part? Her prices are extremely fair, especially considering the level of care, attention, and skill you're getting. Sometimes in San Francisco, paying for a basic cut feels like taking out a second mortgage. Linda, however, offers unbeatable value. Linda is a gem, and this place is a hidden treasure in San Francisco. Highly, highly recommend. ‍ read more

I can't recommend Linda enough! I reached out on Yelp after reading her stellar reviews and received a prompt response with an opening on the same day. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by a beautifully decorated space and Linda's warm, welcoming demeanor. I had long hair that reached my lower back and wasn't entirely sure what I wanted, aside from some face-framing pieces. Linda was incredibly patient, listened carefully to my ideas, and answered all my questions about what would suit my hair best. She also offered helpful suggestions and options, which made the decision-making process so much easier. Throughout the haircut, Linda was very understanding of my concerns--having such long hair, I was naturally a bit nervous--but she made sure I felt confident every step of the way. After the cut, she blow-dried and styled my hair beautifully, leaving me feeling like a brand-new person. If you're looking for someone skilled, professional, attentive, and passionate about helping you look your best, Linda is the perfect stylist! I'm so glad I trusted her with my hair and will absolutely return every time I'm back in the city. read more

Kerrin, picked from the reviews here, seemed to understand what I was looking for. I have no complaints about Kerrin and her skills, she's lovely, (though not the stylist for me). After asking permission to cut more length off, she gave me a bob, a bit matronly for my taste, but okay as a change of pace and still long enough to pull back or put up. That was a must! I felt optimistic about working with Kerrin and sometimes the relationship with a stylist takes time to develop. I had an event that weekend, so we discussed color, at length. I wasn't interested in a "Town and Country" look, I wanted something fun and funky, but not clown-y. On her suggestion, I made an appointment for color and a few highlights later that week. When I arrived back for my color we talked about the cut. To break up the uniformity, she "texturized" it. After the color and final blow out, I found she had cut even more length and ruined the asymmetry I liked, leaving me now with a boxy, very staid, unflattering bob. The color was drab, the highlights so subtle I couldn't even see them and overall not much of a change from what I walked in with. Not great but Kerrin wanted to make it right. We agreed to wait until the color settled before she fixed it. I was a bit shocked to get a $218.00 bil l(not including cut) for single process and a few highlights. While paying, the receptionist, co-owner Patricia, brusquely enumerated the charges, including $40.00 for toner. I told her I had never heard of a separate charge for toner. Her response was, "You never asked." Why would I ask about a fee that is never charged? I explained that I thought it was rude to not let the client know ahead of time, particularly with respect to charges that may not be customary. Patricia responded by calling ME rude and telling me I had been talking too loudly while having my hair done. She added that since I was used to having my hair done, I obviously could afford it. Outrageous. update: the cut is really unflattering and far too short. Alas, all I can do is wait it out and find another stylist. *** Yay! Struck gold with Gillian, at Honeycomb Salon on 24th Street. Updating an already very long review but keeping my OG post below. Cassie reached out to apologize…read moreabout our interaction and also refunded me for the service - which I appreciate - more so because of the humility and courage it takes to apologize, since it was never about the refund. OG post: I'm actually very sad to write this review because sanctuary salon and Cassie have always been my go to when it comes to getting a decent haircut or color in the city. And while Cassie is an incredible and talented stylist and I've always loved her work (5/5 to her for that) - this review is about how she handles customer service as a salon owner and also about the apprentice program. How she speaks to customers is unbelievably condescending and rude and why after leaving the salon in tears I will no longer be coming back here. To back up - Cassie posted about her needing a model for her apprentice program on her instagram for grey coverage. I put my hand up and her apprentice, Danielle, messaged me directly. She booked me for an appointment - I received no confirmation or communication about price or time taken, but I figured it was just grey coverage (I do it myself at home and it takes 10 mins) and it's part of a learning program so it couldn't be too bad. I get to the salon, she makes me sign a waiver "no refunds for this apprentice program" - I figured okay... still just gray coverage and it's just paperwork. So I sign it. The apprentice stylist has a mentor the whole time she's working with me. When she applies the color, she tells me the process is 4 hours and $100?!!! Which I didn't know on either count before. But it's too late to do anything at this point so I'm like fine? And the apprentice has a mentor who she keeps asking questions to so it seems like she can figure it out and keep it going 4 hours later, after a mediocre blow out, I see that maybe 5/500 grays covered. I'm confused - how could this be messed up? When I ask the mentor - she's confused too. The apprentice stylist basically shrugs and says "grays can be resistant." Mentor calls Cassie in. Cassie enters the conversation - basically starts with boilerplate "it's an apprentice program you signed the contract this is all we can do for you, guess it didn't work out this time". When I ask her what she thinks of the work - she asks the apprentice what she did. On hearing her plan (applying permanent color only on 1 inch of the root and then toning the rest of the black below) her feedback is basically "no that's not right, you should've done more permanent color and double processed it". So I finally realize what happened - the apprentice did the wrong thing - which is totally fine cause she's learning and this is what the appointment was about. What shocked me was that her mentor didn't know any better either and approved her plan with no feedback to fix it. I then tell Cassie that what's done is done for today, but for future feedback for paying clients, apprentice program or not, that maybe she should listen to her apprentice's plan earlier and provide her expert feedback before they start executing. She turns around and says "I don't need your feedback, I've been doing this a long time". Then she begins to berate me and says "you're not a good fit for the apprentice program" and basically blames, shames and belittles me for not being happy that I spent 4 hours and $100 for basically nothing?! I honestly wanted to cry - but instead decided to have a reasonable conversation with Cassie to let her know that feedback is a gift and she can choose to take it or leave it. She makes it clear she's "too busy handling a renovation on the 2nd floor and it's not her job to supervise the apprentices or the new mentors on the floor." I realized it was pointless to continue on - so I paid the $100, cried and left. I wanted to share this experience despite being conflicted about it because of how talented Cassie is as a stylist. But as a stylist and salon owner, you provide service to people - but this is obviously not something sanctuary is able to do. A little kindness in this situation would've gone a long way but that was not the path chosen.

I found Mia on social media (TikTok) and after a couple of months I chose to book an appointment through the salon's online booking system. I booked for the following day, and my appointment was approved by the night before! As far as hair styling pricing goes, this salon's prices are really hard to beat! $100 cut and $100 color?! That's amazing. Onto the actual salon (and I'll finish with the experience). This place is SO incredibly charming and charismatic inside. The decor is not only gorgeous but also intentional! There's a fully stocked waiting room which I actually used and felt comfortable in, not something that's typical for me! That waiting room had tea, coffee, still and sparking water! A ton of awesome cups that looked like they were hand picked for the space (the details do matter). The bathroom was incredibly with wallpaper enthusiastically showing off many bird species. There was a coat closet for both hanging coats but also for choosing whichever salon robe you liked best! The salon space itself was full of natural light and thus perfect for the service it's used for! To the experience: Mia was absolutely AMAZING. I cannot find the adequate words to describe how at ease she made me feel as someone with severe anxiety. She asked questions and listened to my stream-of-consciousness ideas about the haircut until we decided on a game plan, and then she got to work! She did EXACTLY what I asked for, a cut to give me face-framing layers and some layers in the back to lighten my very long hair's load on my scalp. I already adore my new hair but honestly, the experience Mia provided was so noteworthy that, I have to gush! She had questions lined up to fill that often awkward silence during haircuts and I so appreciated that. She also gave me totally solid advice on what to do in the future with potential coloring sessions. I'm really grateful to have found Mia on TikTok, because if I hadn't, my hair would've been the same tonight as it was yesterday! Mia you ROCK, and I will be back.

It was difficult to stay comfortable during the visit. While I appreciate the work of my stylist, the air quality in the salon made the OVERALL EXPERIENCE UNPLEASANT. I hope the salon considers installing proper ventilation for the SAFETY of all clients. ***** This review is to WARN you about the air quality and excessive smell of PERM CHEMICALS at this place. During my recent three-hour service, I was subjected to strong chemical fumes, likely from the numerous perm services being performed. These fumes from perm services caused significant irritation to my eyes and nose, not to mention a headache. The excessive chemical fumes and lack of proper ventilation are alarming!

Mai was my stylist and she was super sweet and wonderful to chat with. I got a normal haircut and showed her a few reference photos, consulted with her about what I was looking for in style and the finished look was spot on to my liking! She was meticulous and unhurried throughout the process, paying great attention to detail while cutting. I definitely will be coming back for future haircuts and color treatments with her!!

I've been going to Jenny for over a decade now. When people say that hair matters. This is it! It…read morecan completely change your vibe, attitude and bring out different aspects of your personality. I'm a gal that likes color, variety, and experimentation. I love the adventure and creativity that hair offers and Jenny is the perfect partner to play with self expression. Even the grow outs look cool and interesting. Some days I bring in references, sometimes I let her do whatever the hell she wants. You only live once. Try a different color, go through a bang phase, get the mullet, buzz that undercut, try bullet burns, get a risky euro bowl cut, rock a pompadour, go 80's, attempt finger waves, do something unexpected with those roots, opt for the UV reactive hair dye (it's called acid spill). If you think you're too boring: you're not. Too old? Wrong again. Book an appointment with Jenny and let her get to know your hair and then go on a hair journey.

This review is for Aric (@hairicc), who recently took over Belles and Whistles, though his lack of…read moreprofessionalism makes it hard to tell. I would not recommend doing business with him. I visited to blend a few grays, aiming to avoid constant dyeing. I even brought a photo of a girl with dark hair and blended grays which I attached. Instead, Aric went overboard with highlights, turning my entire head blonde--nothing like the photo. When he offered to add lowlights, I declined, as my initial request had already been grossly disregarded. While I remained calm and professional throughout, things escalated when I approached him about a refund. Aric became irate, gaslighting me by claiming I had "more grays than I realize" and dismissing my concerns as an "identity crisis." His disrespect and argumentative attitude forced me to end the conversation and block him. After paying thousands for a result I didn't ask for, this is unacceptable. Additionally, he has no liability waiver or clear refund policies, either written or verbal. Treating clients this way is a baffling approach to running a business. I feel terrible for the stylists there who are of sane mind and ethics. I attached what I asked for vs what I got. Aric's unhinged texts are comedy and I'd be happy to share those via private message.
