I am writing this to warn others, especially those who value their time, peace, and how long it takes to grow out their hair. My experience at David & James proved that a total lack of communication, understanding, a disregard for client autonomy, and insincere customer service run from the individual stylists straight to top management. If your hair grows slowly, and if you value your peace of mind, this is not the salon for you. It is incredibly painful to lose significant length and volume against your will, knowing it takes years of patience to cultivate. I truly hope no one else has to go through the same painful and distressing experience I endured here. On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, I had my first haircut appointment here with Sabrina. It was one of the worst haircuts of my life. Without taking the time to understand the look I wanted, and before ensuring we were aligned, she carelessly cut off over 12 inches of my hair, length that took me three years to grow. She can't understand what I requested. I wanted a soft U shape on the back where the shortest point is less than 5 inches above the back length. But she somehow decided to cut extremely short layers, the shortest pieces are more than 12 inches above the back. She did issue the refund after I requested it, but then she retaliated by revoking the corrective haircut referrals she had given me for other salons prior to my refund request. Don't get haircuts with Sabrina or at this salon, Sabrina doesn't have the ability to understand your needs, she also insists her ideas of how your hair should look regardless of your preference. David and Lily (as the owners) also behave the same, it's honestly risky to get your haircuts here, because you can lose years of hair growth just because of their self-centered approach. After I posted a 3 star Google review, David publicly responded by offering a comp haircut to make things right. I reached out to accept. Over a week of back-and-forth emailing, I invested significant time providing detailed, annotated photos. My goal wasn't to assign blame, but to ensure we were aligned so the same issues wouldn't happen again. Instead of being receptive, David completely refused to acknowledge the specific issues I pointed out or validate my perspective. Later, Lily even doubled down, defensively insisting there was nothing wrong with the haircut and expressed I'm the problem. They would not allow me to redeem the comp haircut offer, they came up with all kinds of unreasonable excuses to not honor their offer, like I have to commit to more hair to be cut, a trim is not allowed, and I will not be allowed to decide how much hair can be cut. Clearly, David's offering the comp appointment is a complete publicity tactic to save their public image. There's never any real intention to do things right, to fix my haircut. They never showed any understanding, the whole conversation was about defending Sabrina and how great she is, and how there's nothing wrong with the haircut, and I'm the problem. My recommendation is, DO NOT ever step into this establishment, you likely will end up losing years worth of hair growth, by these individuals' careless acts. Then you'll end up having to regrow your hair for years just to recover, hair grows slowly, don't give your trust to people with no taste or respect. read more

I originally came to her after a botched balayage I got in the Philippines, and she completely fixed it. From there, we did an 10 hour transformation going blonde and honestly, that appointment bonded us for life. Here's why: Anton is impolite, lacks knowledge, isn't flexible or helpful, and, most importantly, cannot perform his job properly. For example, he told me that for the first time in my life, I would have a "normal" haircut -- which was far from the truth. Anton creates an illusion of being a magician who will craft something truly unique for you. Don't fall for it. Sabrina is incredible! I have naturally wavy Asian hair and wanted help bringing out my curls. Most stylists end up cutting my hair like it's more traditional straight Asian hair, but Sabrina did an amazing job at reviving and accentuating my curls! I also asked for an asymmetrical hairstyle and she was super creative and fun with it. I saw Sabrina today for my first haircut with her and WOW she is so thoughtful and talented and I absolutely love how it turned out. I've officially found my sf hair stylist. What a gem. The day before my appointment, Sabrina texted me to introduce herself and to ask me to fill out a wellness form. Growing up in Korea with a friend-of-the-family hair stylist named Sabrina that always hooked me up with baller haircuts, I already had a good feeling about trusting Sabrina Tsang @ David James SF to take care of me :) I came in with my post-pandemic mop of hair, kind of hating where it was going & ready to cut it all off, but Sabrina (a true professional) talked me off the ledge and talked me through exactly what I disliked about my hair currently & also what I did like... a quick hair therapy session if you will! Ends up that I actually dug the rockstar length, but just hated how much of an amorphous blob it was & the fact that I didn't really know how to style long hair... both of which Sabrina solved effortlessly. Sabrina is one of those rare hair stylists that 100% listens to your opinions/wants, but also suggests her own professional experience & advice as needed. She took my "hair goals" pictures, easily understood the ~vibe~ I was going for, and confirmed which aspects were easily achievable with my specific hair type vs what might need some adjustment or growth. Sabrina then worked her magic, using appropriate tools for the haircut objectives we were shooting for (mix of scissors & razor cut in my case) and happily explaining to me the various techniques and her reasoning behind using them for my cut (I'm kind of a haircut nerd & fascinated by the profession). Super super easy to talk to, the minutes flew by... when we got to styling she again patiently listened to what I was hoping for, then proceeded to bust out a variety of products/tools & offered suggestions for various looks for different levels of effort (i.e. night out w hot date vs crawling out of bed to quickly get ready for work). Sabrina never pushed a product on me unnecessarily, happily suggesting substitutes or identifying what wasn't a must-have for a look if I balked at the price or effort-level of anything we went through together. All in all, a super enjoyable experience and well worth every dime. I have found my forever stylist!! Sabrina is the BEST. I had seen her work through friends of friends on Instagram and finally made an appointment to come in. I kinda had an idea of what I wanted but I wasn't sure if it was even possible. Sabrina reassured me throughout the process and I truly felt like I trusted her completely. I've always had dense, straight hair and never imagined my hair could have any movement or texture but she freaking did it! I also chose to get a little extra time in my appointment to learn how to properly style my hair and she broke down every single move she was making and taught me how I can recreate it at home. I had the most amazing time talking with her and watching her work her craft. Her attention to detail and energy is one in a million. Edited: David actually reached out directly and wanted to hear more; he and Tahylor also offered me a refund and more in an effort to make it right (and I didn't even get a hint of "here's a refund if you'll edit your review"). I really felt like they went above and beyond and I'd recommend this salon even though I wasn't happy with my own haircut. (I got a mens' long haircut from Tahylor and it came out way shorter than we had discussed; I really didn't like the style so I was frustrated at how long it would take to grow back and try again.) read more

Sabrina Tsang is an incredible stylist in all the ways you want your stylist to be incredible! I managed to snag a last-minute opening with her one morning, and we had to finish up my appointment fairly fast so I could make it to work on time. I knew I wanted a lob, but was looking for some professional input on the details of what would work with my face shape and the vibe that I was going for. I showed her some inspo photos and she immediately understood what I was going for. As a stylist, Sabrina is really knowledgeable, but also incredibly down-to-earth and flexible to what your individual preferences are, so she's not pushy or rigid in her approach at all. I love that she manages a balance of expertise, creative freedom, and client input / happiness. She works to highlight existing natural beauty and I love that! I specifically mentioned that I'm pretty lazy when it comes to styling and wanted to learn how to style with minimal effort and I'm happy to say I have a style that fits exactly what I want, and know how to recreate it to look awesome as well. I feel so happy and confident in my new hair and could not stop looking at myself in the mirror after our appointment. To top it all off, she's an amazing conversationalist and we managed to strike up a super fun and natural conversation throughout my entire appointment. She has some super contagious positive energy and confidence, and it couldn't be clearer that she LOVES what she does. All the reviews are true - Sabrina is the absolute best! My hair is really straight and I've never been able to have much volume (unless I sleep with hair in a bun which is what I've been doing - hence the slight wave to my hair in the before pictures). Sabrina was really great about listening to what my hair goals are/what my hair type is like before starting the haircut. She was very informative and honest when it came to her ideas for the cut/what she thought would help with volume and face framing layers. I've never had such a thorough and and attentive hair dresser before! And she gave me a lot of great styling tips throughout the hair cut. I also really appreciated her telling me what she was doing step by step - she let me see how I could style my hair with it freshly washed, then showed me how it looked straightened, and then also showed me how to style as she was curling my hair. The cut itself came out exactly how I wanted it (even better than I ever imagined it) and I never thought my hair could ever have that much volume. The pricing is more than reasonable, and my hair looked great for days after my haircut! I'll definitely be coming back to Sabrina for all of my future haircuts and I am so glad I found her. read more

I followed Sabrina from diPietro Todd Mill Valley and am glad that she's back in the city! Sabrina is able to add movement to my normally long straight asian hair and gave me tips on how to style on my own. She was also attentive to how much length I wanted to cut, which is nice since I like to keep my hair long. I got balayage with Stevie and like how she was able to place the color in all the right places. Also, parking is surprisingly not bad for being in SF and making appointments online is easy and convenient. If you want a fresh cut and color, ask for Sabrina and Stevie!
