"I TOLD YOU SO." - My husband when I finally got a haircut from Sally. Sally had been expertly cutting his hair for too many years to count but for some reason I didn't think this would necessarily translate well to women's hair. Glad I was wrong on this one. (This was the ONLY time I was EVER wrong, right hubby? Glad we agree.) For the past ~10 years, Sally has always done an excellent job with my straight Asian hair and vague instructions. ("What do I want? Um shorter? Some layers?" I am the worst.) I always walk out happy with my low maintenance haircut. I'm sure if you are higher maintenance she would be great as well since even on my hair she was extremely meticulous about making sure the lengths were even, etc. She also has a much better sense of what is "in style" for Asian hair at the moment. (Compared to me anyway. This is not a high bar.) The salon itself isn't super fancy but who cares? It is clean with lots of magazines to flip through for ideas. The best part is the price - only $55 for a woman's haircut! It includes washing and styling. Amazingly reasonable for a haircut in SF. Other plusses: I usually can get in for a haircut within the same week that I call which is helpful to those who may "occasionally" procrastinate (who me?). Also, I've never had a problem finding parking because in addition to street parking there is a parking garage nearby. And yes, you will be supporting a locally owned, family business. Sally is soooo nice and personable! She makes you feel comfortable right away! Took my 12 yo daughter for her first big girl haircut. My daughter showed her a photo (wolf cut) and Sally delivered exactly as expected. My daughter and I are so happy with the cut so much so that I booked an appointment for myself! Sally recommended Shiseido coz she said my hair was damaged already...it's more expensive but will give good results. The Naturalizer and Sensitizer she applied was too little, not enough the fully soaked my hair. After the treatment, blow drying and styling , I was so happy and told her I'll give her a good review. she said "you're hair wasn't that bad , maybe I can give Discount" However, when I was about to pay she said , she still charged $300.. and said " Oh Im sorry I accidentally charge $300" .. yeah right! And she mentioned when I come back she'll give me free treatment but have to pay haircolor. After 3 days of keeping my hair straight and unwashed.. finally I showered it. Shockingly, it turns out so dry, very frizzy! I went back after 1 week to show her and maybe she can give me a treatment as promise. I said Hi but acting like she didn't know me. She just ignore me and didn't even say how was my hair etc. I waited for 30 mins and decided to leave. She finally talk to me from a far " what time are coming back?".. I said maybe 30 mins.. to my anger I would never come back to this place! Ever! Typical marketing strategies with poor outcome! *** This is an update after posting this review. Sally called me twice to apologize for whatever reason I wasn't satisfied for. She said she may have forgotten me when I came back at that time. She admitted some possibilities of the unsatisfying result and offered me to come back and she'll give me a free keratin treatment or she can re-do it again after months, free of charge. And said she won't forget me this time.. I appreciate her effort, and apologies. Not all Salon would do this, honestly. I wanna give her another try. We'll see. I'll keep you guys lo * just done my keratin treatment with Sally, she spent almost 3 hrs doing it. No charge. She made sure I am satisfied. This salon is hideous. The sanitary standards are way below the bar. And the lack of attention to details is outrageous. 1. The towel is extremely dirty and smells disgusting like it has never been washed before. 2. My gf was forced to get a haircut she didn't ask for. So happy to have found a salon that works with my type of hair (really really thick, slightly curly Asian hair)! I was specifically looking for a salon that does the Keratin straightening treatment (vs. the magic straight perm) and this came up. Coming from NYC to SF, I had usually just waited until I went back home to get my hair done but this time my hair was getting too unruly and so did research of Korean salons in the Bay area. I was amused / happy when I called them up to set up an appointment and the first question they asked was "What type of hair do you have - Asian or non-Asian?" As an Asian I'm always trying to find someone who has dealt with my type of hair- I've had way too many incidents where the stylist didn't know how my hair acts and ended up with a bad result. Anna (my stylist) suggested either the magic straight perm (which lasts much longer but damages your hair) or the Keratin (hydrates the hair with nutrients but only lasts 2-4 months); though she highly recommended the magic straight treatment, she acquiesced to my request for Keratin given my wish to not damage my hair. Salon was a bit tricky to find since you have to go downstairs in a building to get there so look out for the sign at the door. The interior had a warm feeling to it (even though I personally am not a big fan of pink in general). Anna speaks both English and Korean, and so we chatted throughout the session in Konglish. I was very thankful for this, since other Korean salons the stylists prefer to only speak in Korean even after I tell them I only have rudimentary skills. Keratin process lasted 3 hours (she originally estimated 4-5) and then 3 days of not washing it / tying it up / putting it behind the ears. This treatment (which includes a haircut) cost $300 (which is cheap vs. others I found in the area) though it can get more expensive if you have longer hair (my hair is shoulder length). Very satisfied with the results! I even liked the way she cut my hair- slightly textured but still very clean and sleek-looking. Overall, very impressed with their professionalism, skills, and friendliness. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back for haircuts and other treatments that might come my way! read more

I've come here a handful of times now, and I gotta say, this is my new hair place! Betty is amaaazing at cutting hair. I'm pretty particular about my haircuts, especially because my hair is thin and can look flatter; however, she's able to maintain its volume and cut it the exact style and length I want. I've been going to Sally's since 2015 and I have always been satisfied with my cuts. I have only gotten haircuts there so I can't speak to their other services. I usually ask to chop off a few inches and add some layers for natural movement in my hair. I trust them to know what to do with my thick, stiff, Asian hair. First time at this place, actually first time getting my hair done in the States (usually get it done in Korea where it's cheaper and higher quality) so i was quite anxious as I entered the place. Did my digital perm with Anna. She is really accommodating, and started my 3-hr session at 4pm even though the shop close at 6pm. The perm turned out pretty well even though I already had really dry hair before the perm. My curls were not too tight, just the way I wanted it. Received several compliments since I had the perm last Thursday. Even my husband, who was really skeptical about permed hair, really love my new hairdo, he said it really compliments my face. Immediately as I walked in, for the first time- I was greeted with a friendly smile! The feel of the salon is so delightfully girly, and cozy all at the same time, because of the hot pinkish walls, and interior. The owner of the salon named, 'Sally' did my keratin treatment, which is looking remarkable!!! I absolutely love it! She took precise care, and made sure I was comfortable the next 3 hours. She is very stylish, and modern in her sense of articulate hair skills. I can be quite fussy with wanting things a particular way, especially when it comes to wanting to try something different for my hair. I wanted to try dying my roots a darker more natural shade from light brown, since the upkeep is extremely time-consuming, and pricey. Sally made this happen! Highly recommend this place for anyone who needs magic straight perm done! I have been getting magic straight perms once a year for over 15 years. I always felt like my hair got damaged every time I get this done but I have to say Sally did amazing work on my hair. I watched her applying a lot of conditioning product to protect my hair from the chemicals and the heat. It took her 6 hours to get it all done since I have long and a lot I mean a lot of hair but it was soooo worth it(normally it takes ~4 hrs with 2 people)!!! It was a spur of the moment idea, and other salons that I'd walked by were full for the day, requiring appointments for the next openings. I'd been growing the hair out, but for some reason, a change seemed necessary. A random turn of events while walking from Lower Nob Hill to the Western Addition... I almost ended up with an Asian mullet. Thankfully, I spoke up, and Anna turned the almost Asian mullet into a cute haircut that I've received many compliments on. *phew* So it seems that I can never stick to just one hair place. I came here to get a digital perm. I usually get them done at Arty's, but they were closed for a week for training in Japan, so thought I would try this place... I wanted to get a digital perm, and the lady (I think her name is Betty) said that there was a new type of perm called a zig perm, that would take half the time with the same results. I was a little hesitant, but said ok. I'm trying to live with it, but end up having to put tons of product in my hair, and both blowdrying AND curling it to get it to looks semi presentable. Another annoyance was that when Betty was running her hands through my hair, she was standing behind me, and her fingers (and fingernails) were jabbing into my cheeks/ears each time she did. I had permed my hair into a fro, and thought there was no end in sight while I was growing it out. Someone referred me to Betty and said she could help me out. She convinced me to do a magic straight perm for damaged hair (my hair was dyed and then permed twice), and praise Jesus!!! I'm so glad she got me to trust in her. I have a mullet and I am not happy. True, the longest point is 2 inches shorter than I began with so that's one point for listening to the amount of length I wanted trimmed. Having recently moved to SF I was looking for a place nearby to get a haircut. After searching on Yelp I settled on Sally's because it was within walking distance of my apartment and it was decently priced (at least relative to other places in the city). When I arrived I was greeted by Anna and was quickly seated. The first thing she asked me was what I wanted. She was quite friendly as we talked while she cut my hair. At the end I got a thorough wash and some wax to spike my hair. Overall a decent cut and the ladies seem very nice. Plus its super convenient for me since I could just walk over. It slightly more than I usually pay (a cut was $30), but I guess thats expected in the city. read more

Sorry everyone but I had to give the salon only 3 stars for a couple of reasons. 1) The lady who answers the telephone always talks in very demeaning voice. I was very insulted at her rudeness. Sally of Sally's Salon is amazing!!! The first time she cut my hair 7 years ago, she really did a good job. I had just moved to SF from a small island in the Pacific, and had really long straight hair without any style. She added some layers and texture, it was great! In the last year, she gave me a digital perm and I really liked it. When it comes to styling my hair, I want no-fuss. Wash and go is perfect for me. This digital perm allowed me the freedom that I need. My next one, I'm asking her to use bigger rollers (just to try). I recently got a hair cut from her. She sent me a birthday present which was 20% off any service. BTW: I'm not special, she offers this to all her clients. I went in and told her what I wanted, and she totally delivered. I wanted to straighten out my old digital perm but after years of putting my hair through the Japanese magic perm, I needed something gentler for my noggin. So I got a keratin treatment. The positives are that it doesn't damage your hair if applied right, makes your hair shine healthy, and keeps it smooth and manageable. The negatives are that it's expensive, only lasts a few months, and takes two to three hours. Anna was great. She was thorough and took her time (we didn't finish until after closing on a Friday night but she never tried to rush things). Keratin treatments are labor-intensive and with my long hair, it took longer than expected. The place is dated and does have pink walls. But I don't go to salons for the atmosphere. I go to get my hair did, did right, and for a reasonable price. Sally's provides that trifecta. Plus they offer coffee and free wifi. read more

In short: Anna is A-mazing! I took a leap of faith choosing this salon, as this was my first time going to a Korean salon in SF after having lived here/bay area for the past decade. I just didn't think that SF would have a decent Korean hair salon. However, my hair was in dire need of a major fix, so I made a choice to check this place out. I wanted to get a digital perm that looked natural, like those curls from your curling iron. I wasn't sure if that was possibly w/ my dry, frizzy and damaged hair. But Anna made it happen. I brought a picture, showed it to her, and told her my hair concerns. She said that she could pull off a natural-looking perm for me, but that she would have to take a very special care of my hair. She wasn't joking! She spent the next 4.5 hours layering nutrient after nutrient on my damaged hair, then carefully applying heat to make sure the nutrients get soaked in well, applying the perm chemical so carefully (and she did it in two separate segments to make sure that the damaged part of my hair wasn't getting over-saturated w/ the perm chemicals), rolling the perm rolls and making sure the sizes of the roll were just right for different parts of my hair, then applying the digital perm machine. It was a long process, and I really appreciate Anna's patience and care-taking into my hair. It was a difficult hair case, I'm sure. But she did a fantastic job, and all the hours were well worth it because I fell in love with how the curls came out the minute she showed it to me!! I am attaching the picture from today here. I'm not sure if you can see it well, but these are the kind of waves I KNOW I can style it easily, and naturally -- and people will not think that I got a perm but will think I just curled my hair beautifully! I immediately got compliments -- and it's only day 1 (the added bonus is that these curls only get prettier w/ age...!)!! I'm one happy gal. It might be apparent that I am stingy with 5 star reviews. But last night I got a 5 star hair cut at Sally's from Betty. I have been going to Sally's for 2 years to get my hair thermally straightened. They do an amazing job, charge less that you would pay at a swanky downtown salon and the results are better! I tried one of the swanky salons, paid DOUBLE what I pay at Sally's and was disappointed. Back to my hair cut from last night: I called Sally at 4:15 on a saturday, she agreed to see me at 5, I left the salon at 6:30 with the best hair cut of my life! And the price!!!! I feel guilty, like I am stealing!!! I have now decided to break up with the other place I go to for haircuts (see above swanky salon reference) and will use Sally's for all my hair needs. So I don't usually write reviews, instead preferring to just read and gather info about places in the city. But I'm making an exception for Betty at Sally's Salon & Spa and a topic dear to me, haircuts, more specifically my haircuts! If you're lucky enough to have my type of Asian hair (thick, course and "healthy") you know all too well you've usually only got two options; short and spiky which makes you look young and gangster or long and flat which makes you a fobby Asian pop star. That is until I discovered Betty at Sally's Salon. She's very skilled and not just with the clippers. I usually don't like the "buzzed" look that clippers leave, instead preferring a more natural style with scissors. Betty uses her scissor skills and never rushes me in and out like some places do. In fact one time I went in for a cut, she sent me home because my hair wasn't long enough to provide the style that I wanted. She could have taken my money and made an easy buck but instead had enough integrity to send me home so I'd get the style I wanted later. Right on Betty! If you're looking for a quality cut from someone with skills, go to Betty. And all the more reason if you've got hard to manage Asian man hair. read more

I always go to Asian salons to get my hair did. Moving to San Francisco was no different. The prices are way more affordable since I have to have it done often. And they specialize in my thick Asian hair and knowing how to not turn it orange when I want it lightened. I come to Betty every couple of months to get a cut and to lighten my color. The hair color price is super affordable and doesn't break my bank like the super trendy American places on Union St. They also offer the magic straight perm and other procedures for 1/3 of the cost. And did I mention they know Asian hair? Honestly though, even if I wasn't Asian I would at least come here to get perms, straight perms, highlights and such. Much much cheaper if you're on a budget. Tip: Ask for Betty, she speaks perfect english and always does a great job. I've LOVED my hair every single time I walked out. read more

I was actually attempting to go to two other well-reviewed asian salons in the area that weren't appointment-only but they ended up being booked so I went here. I had already done my research and knew this was the highest rated hair-cutting place in Japantown (and also the most expensive) but didn't have time to make an appointment. Not wanting to leave on my lunch break empty handed, though, I called-in to see if they were available for a quick cut for a male. Fortunately they were and I went in for the cut. Backstory on the cut I have and want: I usually wear my hair in a subtle faux-hawk style. Lately though, I've started riding a motorcycle to work which leaves my hair pretty messed up all day: so I'm essentially going for the same cut only a lot shorter. As I sat down the lady who was cutting my hair (Anna) didn't really ask me what I wanted. I think she saw my "long and messy mohawk-style" hair and just attempted to clean it up. During the process I pretty much explained how I wanted everything much shorter overall, especially the sides. She did exactly as I said and my hair looks fantastic (if I may say so myself.) The cut and wash and some special wax from Korea set me back $45 (plus tip). Anna gave me her card to do coloring next time (which she pushed a few times.) Overall a great experience. Anyway I think I've finally turned my Johnny Depp in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory hair cut (read my Sublime Salon review) to a very stylish and easy to maintain hair cut. I have very thick straight Asian hair. When I got there I lflipped through a few Japanese hair magazines and selected one that I liked. Midway through with hair flying everywhere I got a little concerned that I would end up with a Asian mullet. But in the end, it turned out very cute.
