Don't judge for me being vain and particular, but there's no salon the offers the type of perm I was looking for in my area so I hopped on a 2 hour plane to get down to San Francisco to get an air wave service done. I don't trust cheap Asian salons to work on my hair, it's also only an every few year service for me as it lasts a very long time so it wasn't a big deal for me to go through this extreme extent, plus there's great food in the bay area to check out. Naoto was my stylist and he was very polite and detailed, always checking up on me to make sure I was doing alright. He gave me a blanket while I was getting my hair washed. I am an extremely busy individual so cutting down on styling time in the morning because of this perm really help make my life easier. Love the results and Naoto gave me his card in case I ever have any questions about my hair to message him, but he already educated me on how to style my hair. This salon is located in Japanese town, near the mall but not inside the mall. It's small, cozy, and intimate with stylists that all seem exceptionally skilled so no wonder why they have 2 locations and is far booked out. WOW! It's been 2 wks w my digital perm and I am still raving about my experience with Naoto. Just read Luyn's 10/16/2024 review of Naoto's cut and coloring and I'd echo everything she said. Hands down best haircut of my life (and I have essentially NEVER liked a haircut off the bat, usually takes days/weeks for me to say it's ok). I would've been thrilled to just walk away with that cut but had already mentally committed to a digital perm. Also best shampoo experience of my life. Everything Naoto does seems to be with great intentionality and purpose with high attention to detail. The cut was systematic and meticulous. Even how he shampoos your hair seems to be with great intentionality and thoroughness and was sooooo relaxing. And then of course I was THRILLED with the digital perm result. Much better than my prior. He left just a couple heating rods in a bit longer than the others and the result was great! Much pricier than what I'd typically invest in hair but after this experience I'm seriously reconsidering whether I'm now a convert and maybe now I can't go back to "normal" salons! read more

I recently had an amazing experience at Hair Caffe with Naoto for a cut and color. My hair was in rough shape--dead, dry, unevenly trimmed from a few months ago, and my old color was growing out. I wanted something fresh and darker, and Naoto delivered beyond expectations! There is very little street parking so I parked my car at the parking garage at Japan Center (1610 Geary Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94115) for $2/hr and walked over to the salon (~11 mins walking). From the moment I walked in, the service was top-notch. The entire staff works efficiently and quickly while keeping the space immaculate. Every new customer is greeted warmly, whether it's their client or not. The vibe in the salon was also a huge plus--jazz music played softly in the background, which was a refreshing change from the usual high-energy music you find in most salons. Naoto was quiet, confident, and meticulous with his craft. He took his time, gave me the best hair wash and scalp massage I've ever had, and was incredibly thoughtful in his approach. He covered me with a blanket and used a towel to ensure no water splashed into my eyes during the wash. His attention to detail was evident in every step, and the entire service was gentle yet intentional. As someone who prefers a quieter atmosphere, I really appreciated that Naoto didn't force any conversation. It was a peaceful, relaxing experience--just what I want from my hair appointments. He didn't try to upsell anything or overcomplicate the process, which was a nice change. What impressed me most was how quickly Naoto worked without compromising quality. In less than two hours, I got exactly what I wanted--a perfect cut and color--while my last experience in Georgia took 7 hours and didn't even meet my expectations. And the price was comparable to what I paid before, making it well worth it. At the end of my appointment, Naoto offered suggestions on what I can do to keep my hair healthy and how to style my long face framing bangs which is always appreciated since I am not very adventurous when it comes to styling my hair. I meant to do a review much earlier, but forgot! I remember the experience was great and I had the exact curls that I wanted :3 I came here about 1.5+ years ago to get my first ever Airwave perm. My hair was straight, flat, thin, and dry because of my autoimmune condition, so I was worried what the perm might do to my hair. I still wanted to try something different so I went for it! Luckily, my hair didn't look damaged afterward. Instead, it looked fluffy and voluminous and healthier. The place was very cute and my hair stylist was very helpful and considerate. Sorry, I can't remember his name since it's been so long, but he made me comfortable and was very thorough throughout the entire process. During the consultation, he explained what he needed to do to achieve my reference pics, and then what I can do to maintain the perm afterward. I was a total noob with hair so I was very grateful with all this knowledge. They even welcomed me to text them if I had any questions afterward, so the support was amazing! Truthfully, I was disappointed after I saw my curls in the salon with all the wet hair styling stuff applied. But I learned that it would look fluffy and beautiful once it's dry! When my mom saw it, she was amazed. She tried to convince me not to do it because I'd look like an old lady, and that waves would be better. She was surprised and complimented how great it looked. I got many compliments after. I used mouse and blow drying to maintain the fluffiness, but I got lazy a couple months in and stopped doing anything to my hair. It became something like softer waves without styling, and you can still see in the pics that those waves are still there 1+ year later. read more

I had severely damaged my hair when I went scuba diving on a liveaboard boat for 5 days and gave up on untangling the birds nest it became when there was no good shower access. My hair was splitting at the ends and almost perforated at the bottom. Scheduling is tough with the high demand. I booked with Kenji two months out, and was able to move it up a month by checking the schedule regularly. I arrived a few min early and was seated exactly at my appointment time. As he brushed my hair, I shared what happened with Kenji and said I preferred long hair, but wanted to cut off as much damaged hair as necessary and would trust him on any style calls. He understood the assignment very well. We walked to the back and I got lathered up in shampoo and conditioner. For the conditioner part, he put this most amazing steaming hot towel at the bottom of my neck and it was bliss. It was a very relaxing experience, exactly like the service you would receive in Japan's beauty salons. We went back to the chair and got my hair dried up with the Dyson hairdryer. For the remaining hour, he sectioned my hair and worked on straightening (so the slightly wavy ones would be straight for the cut) and cutting one very small section at a time. I don't think my hair has ever had such detailed attention - he was extremely focused and meticulous. He also has Japanese scissors that are like samurai swords - they were really sharp and cut without doing the full snip motion. It was more like a slight whirring wiggling dance motion to cut. An hour of intense focus later, he massaged some hair oil in and held a mirror so I could see the back profile. What can I say except I'm a BAADD customer. I've been with Michiaki for about 12-13 years? Back when he was at Japan Beauty Center. There are too many pictures to upload but I've been getting cut/color/perms with him and Masa for a long time. I don't even remember how I found Michiaki in the first place, probably wandered in JBC but I haven't looked back. My hair grows slow AF and I won't let anyone else touch it accept for M&M. For me, Michiaki is the king of chemical (perms), Masa for cuts, and Kenji for color. Now that Michiaki opened up 2, yes 2 shops (one in SF and the other in RWC) I still get my appointments 3 months in advance and look forward to working with M&M and more recently, Kenji on perms, colors and cuts. I know that all of the staff are trained in some way by these three gentlemen so would suggest working with some of them because appointments with M&M&K are close to impossible to get. read more

I came in for a men's perm and am so happy with my overall results. Ricky did a great job with start to finish. I initially came for a hair consult because I wasn't sure if my hair was long enough yet to perm. I had been growing it out for 3-months but had never done anything like this to my hair. Ricky was very clear on what to expect and didn't make any false promises like some salons have done in the past. I've been warned about perming Caucasian hair several times but Ricky did an amazing job and achieved the overall appearance I was hoping for! The appt itself was smooth and easy. He was on time. Took about 2-hours. Love that they offer later evening appts and also love that all of the stylist don't talk your ears off while they're working on you. Also I was shocked that he used scissors to cut my whole head and didn't use trimmers at all - very impressive! I'd rate it a 12/10!!! Excellent service! I went in for the first time for a Frozen Ice Japanese Hair Straight service with Ricky. My hair is thin, straight but frizzy, nowhere near curly but it would just NOT stay neat and tidy for long. It would basically take me around an hour to blow dry and straight-iron my hair for it to get all frizzy the moment I'd step out of my house. Life is too short to live with hair you hate. It was my dream to get this service and this salon seemed like the best place to get it. Now my hair actually air-dries completely straight (no frizz) and it's soft/silky to the touch. It's just beautiful and I really love not having to spend time ironing my hair if I don't want to. I really can just walk out with wet hair and come back with gorgeous hair, haha. I had their frozen ice Japanese hair straightening done today with Naoto-san. He did such an amazing job (see attached pic)! He made sure more than several times what my preferences are (e.g. how close to my parting line I want the neutralizer to be applied, like at 0cm, 1cm, or 2cm level). The way he was ironing my hair was very meticulous like he was making sure each of my hair was ironed. His way of massaging my neck felt very good, too as well as placing a hot towel under my neck while he washed my hair. Overall, it was a great experience with him and the frozen ice straightening service:) I would also like to add a long over due review on all hair stylists at hair caffe. I have been going to see their hairstylists for the past 11 plus years (including the years when they were still at Japan Center Beauty Clinic.) They are all excellent in their craftsmanship and they know what they are doing. 11 years ago my local hair salon screwed up my hair really really bad. (I asked them to give me some loose air wavy type of perm and even showed them a picture, but it ended up looking like a GIGANTIC poodle head since they used the tightest perm coils on me lololololol). I was hoping that the perms would loosen up as time went by, but even after 6 month, my perm was super duper TIGHT. I made an appointment with Michiaki-san one day. I was telling him about my horror story. He said, "It can be straightened". I was like "Really!?" The appointment on that day was actually made for a hair color correction, but he accommodated the change as we spoke, straightened my hair, and did my haircut on that day. I remember everything was done just in two hours. I was SO impressed and happy with the results. Since then, I've been one of their loyal customers:) Michiaki-san has been hard to book an appointment with since he is so popular as well as other stylists. I went in for a color appointment with Naoto and it was AMAZING! I had previous highlights in from another salon that was growing out and he gave me exactly what I wanted! (I was over the highlights and wanted a solid color and he balanced it out really really well with a great color that matched my skin tone) I told him I had a baby 5 months ago and he was cautious about not having the product touch my scalp because they're sensitive. The experience was very similar to salons in Tokyo (I've gone to salons in Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, NY, and London and my favorite experience is still from Tokyo) the hair wash is like a head massage, super relaxing! It's a long awaited review. I can't say enough how much I love this salon. I wish the pandemic is over so I can finally get my hair done in a professional place. My hairstylist is Ricky - he's one of the most nicest & talented people in this industry and have been doing hair for years. He's humble and not much of a talker which is great because I'm not either. He always somehow finds a way to make my hair look FABULOUS. I finally decided to chop my hair off after a bad bleaching job from another hair salon. After reading reviews of Keiko's hair cutting magic, I knew, it was time. My appointment was on a weekday at 11am, same time as opening. I was greeted by one of the stylists who went to let Keiko know I arrived. Even though I was 10 minutes earlier, she happily got me started right away. We started chatting about the look I wanted which I learned was called the "A-Line Bob". I told her I want to chop off as much dead hair as possible while getting close to the photos I showed her. But if you want a specific hair length, I recommend make it super clear to her since hair stylists tend to just keep cutting more than you want sometimes. She analyzed my hair as I explained my experience with getting it bleached professionally at another hair salon. She sympathized with my pain. She cut the super dry bits off first before we went to the hair washing station. All hairstylists at Hair Caffe are very gentle and kind to the hair at this stage. She even did some extra treatment to my hair because it was so dead. (when I describe my hair as "dead" or "dry," it's just me who kept saying it, not Keiko) When I sat back down, she offered to make me any drink so I took up on her offer for a matcha latte. After about 5mins, we got started. She blow dried my hair gently and started snipping away. After she got the length down, she blow dried my hair even more. Since I have medium amount of hair volume, the poofiness was real at this stage. Then she started thinning bits and bits: this part was magical to watch. She was quick and precise as she got bits and bits of my hair thinned, and I saw my hair poofiness lessening with each passing minute. I was impressed because normally hair stylists would comment about me having so much hair, but Keiko wasn't at all. After she was done, my hair felt so crazy light and looked great! I thanked her profusely for a wonderful haircut, got my matcha latte in a to-go cup, and totally felt refreshed. I'm writing this review after a week with the hair: it's so unreal how for once my hair actually looks like the day I cut it with my own routines. Of course getting a blunt cut, your hair will flop so you have to blow-dry/style that, but it's been easy to do so. If you're thinking of going with a short hair style for the upcoming spring months, I'd definitely recommend scheduling an appointment with Keiko! Been to this location for about 3 times now. First two times for hair cut Keiko which were great and then I made the biggest mistake of going to some other salon and I had the biggest regret of my life. Literally felt depressed whenever I looked at mg bangs and my horrible haircut. I waited for few months and went back to Hair Caffe and Sayuri worked on my ombre highlight and a hair cut. This overdue review is for Mr. Kenji. If I could give 10 stars, I would! I've been getting perms here since 2018, and I've always loved the results. My regular stylist relocated, so I went with Kenji for my last perm. Since I already had some results in mind, when my last perm didn't quite turn out the way I wanted, I asked for a fix which Kenji promptly scheduled, and I was very grateful since times are always so busy! He suggested another way of doing the perm that may help get the results I wanted, and sure enough after the appointment, I got exactly what I was hoping for! This place is amazing. Once you enter, you are greeted kindly and offered a drink of your choice. They have lattes, teas and water. I have very frizzy hair from all the bleaching I have done,but this place has done wonders to it. For $130 you get to have a hair treatment done, a haircut, and have your hair straightened with their ice hair treatment. I have never seen anything like this before. I absolutely love how sleek my hair is compared to before. The lady who helped me was very gentle and nice. I got a nice head massage while she was washing my hair. It felt like a short spa. The only reason why I knocked out a star is because she asked me how short I wanted my hair to be cut. I physically showed her one once and she said ok. After my hair cut was done, 5 inches were gone. I am completely devastated because it took me a while to grow out my hair. My hair cut was slightly uneven but just ever so slightly. read more

Uggggh. Did I really just pay $100 (incl. tip) for a haircut? Yes, yes I did. But I'm still rating this place highly because they've given me a style that fits me perfectly. The interior is so warm and cozy and nice. I like that it's not like other salons I've been to, which can feel sort of sterile. There's greenery and lights and wood packed into this small space. I asked to cut off about 5 inches of hair, which can be a pretty daunting task. I also asked that it would look good when growing out, because I wanted to grow my hair long again. At that time, my hair was gross and very damaged from bleaching at the ends. Now I just wanted to clean it all up and make it look like I actually intended it. But, with 5 inches of hair lopped off... a lot can go wrong, you know? Like other reviews noted, a lot of the time was spent on cleaning my hair and drying it. Then when it came to the actual hair cutting, five inches were snipped off simply, and then some subtle layers were added. Honestly, it took a pretty short amount of time for the whole thing. My stylist was really nice and friendly. I was kinda bummed I didn't get a latte though. $100 for a haircut... a latte woulda been nice... TT w TT But the hairstyle shape ended up looking so good on my face. It was a fringe bob that didn't make me look like a Karen, if you know what I mean. It has this classic cleanliness to it and I've gotten compliments on it, with some of my friends saying it makes me look like I'm from a K-drama or something. Even though there's nothing particularly unique or crazy about it, it's just very well executed. Every angle--front, back, side, three-quarters, etc.--looked really good. I've honestly _never_ had that before with a hairstyle. Usually there's something slightly off about it when I turn a certain way. My hair is slightly wavy, so oftentimes a haircut will look weird and asymmetrical and curl the wrong way. But I don't have this problem with this haircut, it almost looks like a really well-fitted wig. Fast forward to about 3 months later and my hair, now a couple inches longer, looks just as good from all angles! I have a difficult time finding a place that understands how my hair works and my sense of style but Hair Caffe may be one of the very few places here that get it right. I originally came across this place because my friend told me about it so I decided to check it out. The website was very simple and easy to set up an appointment but it was a first for me to see a hair salon in America set various price points based on the title/skill level of the stylist but undaunted, I decided to try out a basic stylist and booked an appointment with Ricky. The place operates like other Japanese hair salons I've been to previously where you get the shampoo and conditioner treatment, a detailed and time consuming styling, and another shampoo with massage. Ricky was very good and a good conversationalist when you needed him to be and I was pretty satisfied with my cut given that this was his first encounter with me. Cost a bit more than the average place here in SF but I like the premium service and Ricky's grasp of my hair style preference and how my hair worked. The second time I came, they offered a junior stylist named Sonomi for a discount so I decided to give that a shot. Based on my experience with Sonomi, I can understand how the tiered pricing system works but I thought she did an excellent job for what I paid and she had a pretty good understanding of what I wanted with my hair. A word of caution for non-Japanese speakers, Sonomi is friendly and helpful but English is not a language she can speak naturally and easily so you may find it difficult to convey some specific details. Luckily, I did not have that issue but given that this was her first styling on my hair, it wasn't quite what I had expected but still turned out well. I suppose it doesn't hurt to try something new.... definitely would come back to see Sonomi again though. read more

I miss this place and Kotomi! She did my haircut, digital perm and coloring a couple of times. I loved all the results and was impressed by the coloring. I don't typically like dying hair because I am too lazy to maintain or go to the salon very often. I shared my concern that I didn't want to dye my hair every 2-3 months, and hope it will still look natural when the hair gets longer. The highlighting and 3D coloring she did was really impressive, and they didn't require any maintenance work for a long period. The last 3d coloring still looks nice (even faded) after 1 year. I'm super disappointed with my haircut with Haruma. I asked for layers, it ended up super thin on the bottom but super puffy on the top. My head looks like a jelly fish after washing my hair. He didn't spend much time shampooing my hair before the haircut. This was my first time walking out of a salon without a good smelling hair. I had to go home and put on some hair serum myself. Honestly I am a bit worried that it might end up making my face look huge, but Keisuke understood my need immediately after I showed him a picture and it turned out very nicely. This place is amazing!!! I've never had an above 80% satisfaction before on my hair dues until this one! My stylist was Tomoko and she deserves 110% really. I showed her the pictures of what I had wanted and she was able to point out all the nuances of the color and cut I was looking for. Not only was the price for my color reasonable, but it also cake with a free cut, what more can you ask for! The salon itself was very cute and stylists serve you lattes during the hair process. Update 1/18/2018 - keisuke is amazing! Originally going for a cut and color only, but my mind changed to getting a dipdye. He delivered really well! I love how he is ALWAYS super hands on. THANK YOUUUUU! I scheduled an appointment through their website. It was an easy and smooth process. It lets you choose which stylist you would want. I chose Keisuke for he specializes in bob and balayage. I have never been in a Japanese salon nor have I ever been styled by a man. That didn't stop me from booking because I trusted the yelp reviews. I am very much satisfied with how Keisuke styled my hair. He is very gentle, courteous, and kind. I asked him what style he thinks will suit me most, and what he recommended turned out well! He is also attentive to detail and careful. I can feel with the way he stroke and cut my hair. I also liked the fact that the salon only takes in people by appointment, and the stylists themselves work on every client. It felt really good that they are focused on you solely. 10 STARS!!! Got a haircut / shaping by Wakana today! I had gone go TS hair salon previously, and they did a terrible job cutting my hair (terrible wash, lots of leftover color near my ears etc). Was skeptical at first about how this hair salon could help me fix Lord Farquaad hair Wakana was super polite, we spent quite a bit of time scrolling through images to understand what I was looking for. She was meticulous, checked in with me a few times during the cut to make sure Im ok, and gave me amazing mid length layers, which looks great with my wavy Asian hair. I've been living in SF for over 3 years, and this is the first time I was truly impressed. I will absolutely be returning for all my future haircuts and hair appointments. Care is in the details, and care was certainly felt at my first appointment here--it was also my first air wave ever! Masa looked at the hair pictures I showed and offered subtle shape options. During the haircut he meticulously trimmed the ends, and then at every stage he kept me informed of what to expect. There was one seemingly small detail that made an impression. After the last hair wash, some leave-in product was applied so I reclined in the chair. Masa placed a warm towel under my neck while I waited those few minutes, and it was like a mini spa treat! The results? For someone with very straight hair, I came out happy with a heads of curls. It didn't look exactly like the picture I showed but it looked very good! I was also glad that air wave was available here for less hair damage and a more natural look. read more

I had a haircut with Keisuke, which is really good. He was very friendly and patient all the time. He spent a long time on a basic haircut, working on each single detail. I have to say that I was not that impressed when he just finished, but when I got home the hair looked even better. I feel sad that I didn't give the haircut enough compliments when it was done.
