This is one of our go to places. Our favorite dish here is the carne en su jugo. It is consistently good, piping hot with lots of meat and plenty to garnish with. Their servers are always courteous and knowledgeable, willing to accomodate. Their agua de jamaica (hibiscus) is made from scratch and an excellent refresher, however their mixed drinks can be SUPER strong, yet tasty. I took away 2 stars because we were there this week and we ordered shrimp ceviche. It was the WORST ceviche I've ever had. Shrimp appeared to be thrown on a dish, looked to have been boiled, with some onion slices and a few strands of cilantro thrown on top. To say it was flavorless would be a compliment. Although this is somewhat part of a chain, their food completely resembles home cooking. They always accommodate my picky requests. Free parking lots in the back as well as the front. Easy to see as it's on the northwest corner of 55th & Lagrange (2 busy main streets). Always have plenty of a/c for everyone to enjoy. Decorated as if we are in México. When I called to place an order the lady on the phone was already being rude. I thought I was overreacting but when I went to go pick up my order I was already able to tell who was behind the phone based on the workers voice tone and attitude. All I wanted was extra sauce, I already know it's extra she's getting upset that I'm asking for hot sauce and she had also told me there was some in the bag but I just wanted more. She charged me $1.11 for some which there wasn't a problem but there wasn't any hot sauce in the bag to begin with.. STORY TIME!!! So about a week ago I just finished a 11 hour shift, and a guilty pleasure of mine and my family is Quesabirria. I have a history of ordering from this Cocula and sometimes they're amazing and other times they're absolutely disgusting. One time when I door-dashed the food, I called the restaurant directly and asked the worker if they could communicate to the kitchen to "make it properly" and low and behold they were the best I've ever had in my life. ON THIS PARTICULAR DAY, I figured I'd try calling again because it worked so well the last time! I ordered 2 Quesabirria Dinners and a Burrito. I made the same request to the worker who sounded young and their response was "I guess". Red flag immediately. When I got there, I made sure to inspect the Quesabirria and to my surprise, one of them BARELY had any meat, it was legit a red Quesadilla, and the one other taco had SO MUCH FAT. I immediately asked to speak to the manager and I spoke to this man who claimed he was the General Manager and said he was Victor. I politely asked if he could remake 2 of the 6 Quesabirria and his response was "Why?". When I told him one barely had meat and the other was a fat taco, he explained to me that "Thats how quesabirria is, it's literally all fat". Victor then said if he were to remake the tacos he would HAVE TO CHARGE ME FOR THEM. I was so blown, never in my entire life has anyone said they would charge me for a remake. If im being completely honest, I should've just asked for a refund and to this day I wish I had because the food was subpar, disgusting, horrible, a waste of a purchase really. My friend picked me up fairly early in the day so we can hang out together. He asked if I was hungry and I said yes. We were having trouble deciding on where to go and I did mention that I could eat pretty much anything. He had a couple things in mind and for the direction we went he pulled into this place. He is a very big fan of the food here and was pretty sure that I would enjoy myself. I was surprised as I don't usually see Hispanic restaurants open for breakfast unless they are a bakery. We parked in the back and walked in and were greeted and seated almost immediately. When I was looking at the menu I only had one question and that was if the whole menu was available or just breakfast. While I could have eaten breakfast easily I was excited because they had birra tacos which happened to be my newest favorite Mexican food. My companion ordered the chilaquiles as it is one of their favorite breakfasts. They thoroughly enjoyed their meal and I felt mine was just way over the top. It was a bigger breakfast than I probably should have had but I loved it no matter what. There is just such an extensive menu here that I can eat there everyday for a month and probably not have the same meal twice. This is one of the things I miss about being in the Chicago area. The waitresses and waiters i've had have been great however, the hostess has been very rude and disrespectful to me and other costumers. Each time I have come, I've had to stand waiting for 10-15 minutes while the hostess is looking at me right in the face and disrupting others customers and workers. Whenever she sits me or my guests she gives us attitude and rudely throws the menu at us. She has constantly eavesdropped my conversations and others, and involves herself in them. I don't want to seem like an instigator but I have witnessed her being rude to other workers as well. I really like the food here and my usual waitress but I don't think I can keep coming if I have to be greeted by such a rude, obnoxious, hostesses. Please do better. read more

This Cocula is outstanding. From the welcoming warm chips n delicious salsa to the giant fried iced cream, everything in between was wonderful! We seriously could not stop eating the chips n salsa, this salsa is thin and has so many layers of flavor...totally addictive! The carne asada dinner is so good, the steak was perfectly cooked and had great flavor and the rice, beans and side salad served with it was perfect. I called to tell Cocula and instead of apologizing the individual I spoke with was more intent on hearing about what I ordered. (As if she didn't believe me) The woman I spoke with turned the missing tortillas into my problem. The customer service was atrocious. Did I mention my husband tipped when he picked up our carry out. Server Saul is friendly, attentive, and professional. Drinks are delicious and the food is amazing. The entree was the Large Shrimp Cocktail which was more than enough for me and my friend to eat; we shared the Large Shrimp Cocktail and couldn't eat it all. I had two of the $6 margarita drinks. The first margarita was the frozen Peach Margarita. The second margarita was the frozen Guava Margarita. Both margaritas were delicious. My friend had a Modelo Beer. I first had the Longostinos here at Cocula's in Countryside. Gradually, the quality has deteriorated on that dish. My wife pointed out how dry and not as flavorful as they used to be. I had the Huachinango al MOJO de aho. Also over cooked, dry and not cooked with care. This is most likely the last time I dibe here. The Wauter Saul was the only cheerful asset about the restaurant. I don't even think they have real consome because what they brought out was just super watery beef broth with onions and cilantro thrown in it.
