Food was average. Service was good. The breaker came when the bill arrived. 6 of the 8 items ordered were overcharged from what was listed on the menu - plus an admin fee. When asked what the admin fee was for he said credit card fee. Said we were paying cash. I deducted the amount from our bill - minus the over charges - and tipped on what we were supposed to be charged. Unfortunate, but reading other reviews, this deception is a common occurrence. First time here and definitely the last. Food was ok. Service was good. When we got our bill there was an admin fee of $1.23 added. We questioned this and were told that they don't know was it was added. We did pay cash so it wasn't a credit card usage fee. Ater he checked he came back and said it was part of the tax. I told him it wasn't because the tax was listed separately. Then he said he had no idea what it was. We told him that we will not be paying for that and he said no problem. Next issue was we were charged way more than what the menu said the cost was for. We ordered salsa and chips. Menu listed that if ordered and eaten inside the cost would be $1.99, we were charged $2.99. The Tostada dinner listed at $13.00, we were charged $16.75. The Gordita dinner listed at $13.00 but we were charged $17.25. When questioned he said he doesn't know that is what the register rang up. He re-rang our order and it came out the same. Our bill, with one tea added, should of been $32.99 plus tax. Instead we were charged $40.99 plus tax and admin fee. Now the menu only listed an extra cost of $1.00 - $1.50 extra for lengua/ Al Pastor/ Chile Rellano/ Chorizo, which we didn't chose. Also 95 cent each for homade tortilla which we didn't order either. We both ordered the steak as our meat choice and was told it wasn't an extra cost. It was not listed on the menu as an extra cost either. Only choice of a filling that was an extra cost is what I listed above. He would not adjust our bill excepted for removing the admin fee. Needless to say we will not be back. read more

The food is pretty good. I live in the area and this is better than most other Mexican locations nearby. Quality neat for the steak and al pastor. The owner is extremely nice and attentive. Sure the prices are a bit high, maybe a dollar more per taco than others in the area but again, the quality makes the difference. They serve alcoholic beverages and those are at a decent price. Smallish place with an outdoor patio. It is also a few steps from Imperial Oak and you can grab your food and head over and eat at the brewery. read more

The food is all very tasty and delicious. The margaritas are strong and tasty. I love the outdoor seating patio with the warm fire pits they have. It's quite cozy and comfortable. They have cute Halloween decor too, and flowers. The server is always extremely nice and friendly. The reason I am am giving 3 stars is because the 3 times we have gone the service is a bit forgetful- they always forget my water refills after asking. It looks like one guy is doing all the tables outside, inside, and carry out. I think it would be better to get a server to help. Also, please check your bill- the price on the menu did not match one of the items on our bill. A hidden gem!! I always see the restaurant colorful sign every time I drive on Ogden Ave for years. But, I was always busy to stop until today. We came here to celebrate a family birthday. What a wonderful and delightful surprise this place. The food were amazingly delicious. I had the steak entree and a steak taco. So darn yummy ! I've given La Cabanita many tries. Although I think they have decent service, their logic behind pricing is terrible and they are way overpriced for quality and quantity of food. I am speaking from a vegetarian perspective. They charge the same amount of money for a veggie taco than they do one with meat, then up charge for a handmade tortilla & again for adding avocado-EVEN when I Don't get cheese. You will end up paying $4.25 per VEGGIE taco-beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, onion and a tiny thin slice of avocado. It's a complete RIP off. You can go to Tony's-who already include avocado in the veggie taco or El Alegre Burrito in Westchester for similar or even better food for less cost. read more

LaCabinita is not only arguably the best Mexican food in the area, I would argue they are the best restaurant of all cuisines in the area. This place has really gone downhill in the years that I've been coming here. I didn't yelp about the really slow service I had in the past because I just chalked it up to a bad day. But I think this last time dining there will literally be my last time dining there. My daughter wanted rice and beans, so we decided to go here for dinner. When we arrive, she decides to get the chorizo and egg burrito. I recommended that instead of just getting the burrito, she get the dinner which includes rice and beans. But I realized that it was not really that big of a deal since the burrito was $5.75 and the rice and bean sides were $2 each and the dinner was $9.50. So the savings overall would be a whopping $.25! We should have ordered it a la carte bc the rice and beans in the plate were literally five tablespoons worth. And my taco salad was half filled. Then the coup de grace was they wanted to charge us $.75 extra for chorizo and egg for the burrito. We questioned what burritos would actually be included in the burrito dinner if not the chorizo and egg? She then blamed it on a computer glitch on the register and took it off. Really? I'm always on the lookout for good, cheap Mexican food, and La Cabanita is close to home, right here in Brookfield... They serve a fantastic carne asada taco! We order them Mexican style, with the handmade tortillas, and they are quite divine. We just squeeze some limes on them and dig right in. Wash it down with a Tecate! The food has always been delicious here, and that is what brings us back. The service has been hit or miss, but seems to have improved greatly on our last couple of visits. It's really got a kind of "hole in the wall" ambiance, but that is how I like my Mexican restaurants, so it's all good by me! I don't care for the fact that they charge for chips and Pico de gallo. I understand they are trying to make a living, but so many Chicagoland Mexican restaurants offer them free, you feel kind of cheated. After my most recent visit to La Cabanita, I felt I had to lower its rating to three stars. I think the food is still quite good, but I have some issues with their menu and portion sizes. First up - they break one of the cardinal rules of dine-in Mexican... they charge for chips and salsa (I think it's technically chips and Pico de Gallo). Not just a little either; I think it was $3.75 (!) for a small-sized portion. This seems bizarre in a place where the entrees venture up to $15. My other issue is with the famous $0.99 tacos on Tuesday. I freely admit this is an incredible price for any taco found outside of national fast food chains who rely on things like "taco meat filling." However... I was dismayed to see how little ground beef or chicken was actually in the tacos. In the case of the chicken - we're talking a heaping tablespoon of protein. Maybe a bit more for the ground beef. These were certainly the smallest taco portion sizes I'd ever had at a real Mexican restaurant. If I were paying the normal price of $2.50 for these little guys, I'd be pretty miffed. Are the tacos worth $0.99 on Tuesdays? It's not a simple question. Maybe your best strategy is to co-opt a technique used by fast food devotees who order a couple of small cheeseburgers, remove the bottom bun of one of them and the bottom of the other and stack them up together. If you put the fillings of two tacos into a single tortilla, it becomes normal. Apart from these issues, I do like the food here. The elote had a nice flavor - the corn was complemented by the mayo, grated cheese and spice. I also like the flavor of the refried bean here, though I prefer mine a bit less liquidy. The tacos, especially the chicken, taste really good, in spite of their wee amount of protein. I'd encourage La Cabanita to remove the page from their playbook which they borrowed from the airline industry -- downsizing and nickel and diming may not be the best strategies. read more

My guy and I are working our way through Brookfield scene, and this place was a MUST. We stopped in on a Friday for dinner and had an a-ok experience. They offer the standard Mexican fare. Prices are a little higher than the other place down the road, but the menu here is more extensive. My guy ordered an egg and chorizo burrito, and I was in the mood for some cheesy goodness so I opted for their quesadilla supreme (or some similar word like that) appetizer. They have a good selection of Mexican beers here, and wine, but we opted for water. My guy enjoyed his burrito, but it was leaking the whole time he ate it. Leaking chorizo grease, to be exact. This one is not for the weak-stomached... just be warned. My quesadillas were ok. The steak portion was great, but there wasn't much cheese on it and the cheese wasn't really melted either! Cheese is the cheap part, you'd think the issue would be the opposite, but still there wasn't much queso in my 'dilla. The rice and beans were good as well. Nothing about this was mind blowing, but I was able to make two meals out of it. This also left me feeling a little bit icky the next morning, and I did notice some oily-ness on my plate as I ate, so I'm sure that's why. Chips and salsa are an extra charge, we noticed (as many others mentioned) that the tacos were a bit small, and just averagely good food for us. Not sure if I'll be back in the future, since I liked the other taco joint down the road more, but maybe? read more

Their mole sauce is the best mole you're going to get south of 18th street, and the ingredients of the food is as fresh as you can get. This is our go-to place for tacos and nachos. The Chile rellanos dinner is very good and would even say its better (and cheaper) than Lalos! We stop in regularly for their nachos deluxe and tacos as well. Very convenient to just run in and take it to go or sitting down to eat. Lots of drink options as well.
