Queso Fundido with Chorizo was good - I mean it's meaty cheese with chorizo - hard to mess that up. I had the carne asada de tampiquena - ordered medium rare but it came out medium to medium well (I.e no pink) but was decently moist (apologies for those who hate that word, but it's accurate) the beans and rice were very good. Y'all, its the end of an era. My husband and I started going here in 2010, we loved it! Cadillac margaritas that made you smile, made with your choice of tequila, excellent food, excellent service, ALWAYS staff was in the process of cleaning some surface, some doorway, or window in the place. Benito was the manager, life was good. Fast forward to 2019, Benito is long gone, new management, not bad, but the prices are going up, then COVID hits. We go less, because dinner for two is more expensive. June 21, 2025, i'm craving a Cocula Margarita. I say honey lets get appetizers (our favorite carne asada nachos) and drinks. He says no, we don't go there often anymore, lets go for the whole enchilada! Dinner, drinks and apps. (see what i did there?) The appetizer comes: chewy azz steak, some gristle bits, rubber cheese, I'm not feeling it, but happy with that Cadillac margarita (ONE SOLID STAR for that margarita). I'm hopeful, because I order something you can't "F" up, Quesa Birria. My Quesa Birria comes, the first bite is a f'kn mouthful of disgusting FAT! I motion to the waiter, show him the horrible group of wiggly things I almost ingested. He tells me, "PEOPLE LIKE THAT! If you send it back, it will come back the same way. That's how we serve it. I got the chicken and steak fajitas with a small chips and guac...Here are my thoughts: Chicken & steak: cooked and seasoned very well 8/10 Rice & Beans: VERY greasy. There was a thick layer of grease around the top and throughout both rice and beans. They were flavorful but so disappointed that they were so greasy! 2/10 Guac: there was zero seasoning. Just mashed up avocados. Hacienda Cocula is delicious! The guacamole and the queso with chorizo served with tortillas are both amazing. We had the beefsteak a la mexicana which is steak sautéed with tomatoes and onions, served with rice and beans. It was so flavorful! Our kids had chicken nuggets and fries and the portion was HUGE! Came to this restaurant after a nearby hike. We had a party of 6. Staff was friendly. We enjoyed our food. Restaurant has plenty of parking in front and back of establishment. For my order I got the beef flauntas and they were delicious. My plate was robust with flavor. In addition to the flauntas, I noticed they had Pozole. I didn't want a full bowl because it was hot out but the waitress was nice of enough to give me a sample. SOLD!!! Next time I come back I want a full bowl of the Pozole. I rarely like restaurant Pozole but this broth was spot on to the homemade Pozole's I grew up tasting in Cali. Not too much more to say about this Mexican joint. I absolutely do not recommend these tacos; they are the worst I have ever eaten. The tortilla was soggy and greasy, and the meat was horribly seasoned. I thought if the meat was bad, maybe the salsa would fix it, but the salsa was just as awful. We went here for Mexican Mother's Day and I ordered the steak dinner. I asked for it to be cooked medium rare and it was over cooked. The inside of the steak was dark brown and was no where near fresh and had an after taste. For the price they are charged and the quality that I was served, I will likely never go here again. I wanted to send it back, however if I had, I would have likely had to wait longer and it was already packed due to the holiday. I also didn't want to be that person. Some of best Mexican styled foods in our area and we have quite a lot of places. Our server was very good and showed what great service means. She made sure our orders were as good as they could be. My steak burrito was just perfect in every way. My wife ordered a steak burrito also with all the fixings inside, hers was perfectly made and the ingredients were added just right. It seems by the reviews that Cocula is a love it or hate it restaurant. I won't say I loved it (first time here) but I found the food to be above average and more interesting than what we get at, say, Chuy's. I tend to snicker at people (Americans) that say how authentic a restaurant and its food are. I'm not Mexican and have never been south of the border so I can only say that we enjoyed what we ordered. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. You are offered four different fillings and some restaurants won't allow you to mix. Here, I was able to order one chicken, one ground beef and one cheese. I also asked that they put any sauces on the side and not on the enchiladas and they followed my order. I found the food to be pretty good and certainly filling. My partner ordered the Cancun combination but had a bit of a struggle with making a choice. I did it for her. I'm going to say the combo was a trip. She received one healthy amount of food. When the plate is served it can be a bit of a shock, but any extra can be reheated at home nicely. Our server was efficient and friendly. We didn't really have a language problem but I keep telling myself that I'm going to learn to speak the lingo. If there was one drawback it was the loonngg wait for the check and then the take-home container. Granted, it was a nice Sunday afternoon and the place got busier as we enjoyed our meal. When all is said and done, we'll be returning. The pull of good food, nice atmosphere and friendly service shouldn't be denied. One last thing, and this goes to everyone going to any restaurant. If you're ordering take-out don't bitch too much about what your food is like when you get home. Hell, it gets wrapped and then put in styrofoam containers while it is hot and steaming. I always enjoy their food. I love the nachos. (It is a few chips with all the ingredients on each chip.) Their chicken soup is outstanding. A huge bowl with full pieces of chicken on the bone and large chunks of vegetables. They have a steak dish where the steak is cut fajita style with peppers, onions bacon and melted cheese. I love their rice. Moist, filled with little tasty treats like peas, carrots, diced potatoes, and Lima beans. Staff is on top of their game. I came here with my parents, sister, and daughter this afternoon. The food was just ok, but the waitress was really nice and attentive. The steak and chicken milanesa were both pretty thin and cooked very well done. I didn't realize the beans had chorizo in them, and i don't really like chorizo, so it would have been nice to know. Went to the Hacienda Cocula in Countryside, IL yesterday, Saturday, October 21, 2023 to celebrate Sweetest Day. The Hacienda Cocula restaurant use to be a really good restaurant with amazing service/food; however, it has REALLY fallen off. The service has waned and the food did not taste good at all. The complimentary warm chips and salsa were delicious. We ordered the 3 steak taco dinner and the steak burrito dinner. The dinners were cold and had the toughest unseasoned steak we have ever experienced. The server was distracted wrapping forks/knives in napkins and very inattentive to our table. We paid for our partially eaten meals. I went to the ladies room before we left the restaurant. The women's bathroom was filthy. There was toilet tissue all over the floor and there was not any soap/ paper towels in the women's bathroom for washing/drying hands. read more

So, I sympathize, as maintaining quality standards across all FOUR locations is like spinning plates, one of which, during our visit to this La Grange Rd location, was flooded with a fajita mystery fluid (as pictured): equal parts salt, water, red dye no 5 and onion. Our absentee server explained that all Cocula fajitas are drowned in such amniotic fluids, by all measure and application of Cocula culinary rigor and excellence. Coculas has been a favorite of mine for Mexican food. However be weary of certain locations because not all Coculas are created equal. This location in Countryside as well as the one on Pulaski (& roughly Archer) are both trustworthy locations. The Pulaski location has live Mariachis on the weekends. Everything here is super delicious and authentic. What I love most is their vast variety of soups. They always have Caldo de Res, Caldo de Pollo, and Caldo de Mariscos daily, which is hard to come by. On weekends they offer Menudo and Pozole. I like to arrive early in the morning for fresh Pozole because hey aren't shy to fill the bowl with lots of meat and hominy! The broth is really rich, flavorful, and has a little kick. This is the definition of soul food, for me. Shrimp cocktails are great here. And another thing I love is their limonadas, made with limes, not lemons. They make this drink half slushee and half watery. It's extra cold, tart, and refreshing! You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu! read more

Today we ordered carry out and when my husband went to pick up the food, the woman said nothing and just dropped two bags on the counter among a sea of other carry out orders. He paid for the food, grabbed the bag with his ticket on it and walked out only to find when he got home that half our food was missing. He called back and the lady basically said it was his fault because she put both bags in front of him. He asked her to please remake the food left behind because it would obviously be cold and she said NO . Like you forgot to hand me half my food or communicate which food was mine, then you blame me, still charge me full price, and won't give me hot food that i paid for?
