Everything about this place is great. The food is unbelievably great. Love the people and the atmosphere. The Al Pastor tacos are my personal fave- super juicy and flavorful, I haven't found place that does Al Pastor as good as them. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating and the woman working behind the register is so sweet and kind. Today I went to this restaurant and ordered 3 chicken tacos and guac which costed me $27, way too expensive. I would have been better off going to Chipotle. To make things worst, before receiving my order I told the young lady who was taking my order that I forgot to add cheese to my tacos. She told me it would cost an additional 50 cents for each taco to add cheese, how ridiculous, I had to pass on that. This was not the worst of my experience. When I got home and tasted the guac it tasted old and did not have any flavor. I will never go back to this restaurant, I feel very cheated. They should not be in the restaurant business. read more

I purchased nachos with ground beef. 1. Nachos shell not fresh at all. And the meat tasted like Hormel chilli. I called them I was placed on hold several minutes. My kids wanted steak tacos and there's not much in this area, so my mom told me about this place. The place was empty when I went. I was greeted promptly, order taken promptly, and food made prompt as well. I ordered 9 steak tacos various toppings, all made freshly and correctly. The steak just wasn't the greatest grade of beef so that's why they loss 2 stars. The service was very pleasant 4/5 stars for sure, the steak just didn't do it for me. Very disappointed and have been going here for years. Maybe it is because of COVID, but the nachos supreme was old chips and NO longer has anything other than meat and cheese. Seriously? I can make that myself and it would have tasted better and been less expensive. Could not bring myself to eat it without the lettuce, tomatoes, guacamole, sour cream. This place has the best burritos, since I was in Mexico. It is hard to mess up Mexican food, but this place is awesome. The seating is very limited so a large party here may be hard to do, tables are for 4 or 2. We pick-up our food from here and they make the food to order, hot and fresh, each order. My pollo taco was juicy, well-filled and larger than most, and my carne asada sope featured a tasty foundation of refried beans spread over a fried masa raft onto which the steak bits, lettuce, tomato and crema were piled. The steak was a bit chewy and the sope itself was difficult to bite into (over-fried?). Otherwise, it was pretty decent. I agree with Leigh S. that when you see color photos of the dishes accompanying the menu, it's a red flag. Maybe they are for the benefit of those unfamiliar with Mexican food... who knows? There's quite a bit to like about El Alegre Burrito - the prices are good, parking is plentiful and the food is served piping hot. I don't think it will become part of my regular Mexican food rotation, though. Why? Because I can drive two miles from here and get to Quesabroso, which I feel produces a superior product for similar prices. read more

This is a hidden gem of Westchester, stuck between Giordano and a Thai place. Nothing to look at from the outside but the food is incredible. The Tortilla Soup is a meal in itself and the burritos are the best around. Everything tastes fresh and very easy on the wallet. read more

Unfortunately out here there isnt many Mexican restaurants By out here I mean the near west burbs(is that where westchester is)?? the only place that I have discovered out here is El Alegre Burrito...hehehe what a name it means the happy mule! and the menu has a big picture of a Mule. I ordered a Milanesa (breaded steak) Torta! It was soooo good! It had beans, avocado, lettuce, tomato, cheese! The dinning area is alittle small but I just drop in and pick up when I go. This my dear pale force troopers is a nice hidden little gem.... Lots of parking! But be careful as this is in the little plaza that is shared with Jewel and there is ALOT of Senior citizens running around the parking lot on their way to Jewel! shake & bake seal of approval!! I love Mexican food. Give me a good burrito and I'll be your best friend. When we moved to La Grange 4 years back, we had to start a new search for a good Mexican joint. After a few disappointments (Taco Taco on La Grange in Countryside, for instance), we stumbled upon El Alegre Burrito at La Grange/Mannheim and Cermak. Guacamole is fresh and delicious, burritos are large and delicious, beans and rice are fantastic as well. Hell, just go and see for yourself. Great stuff. read more

Let me begin by saying I'm Mexican. Hola. I love me some tacos. This place is right across the street from where I work. On day's that I decide not to bring a lunch you better bet your bottom dollar that I'm heading here. Why? Well let me educate you. First, this place has really good prices, I can get two tacos and a cold pop for about $5. Secondly, they use normal size tortillas and are generous with the meat. Third the carne asada is pretty flavorful and the al pastor is pretty right on too. I always get my tacos the traditional way: cilantro, onion, lime, salt and salsa either green or red. The only things that I can bitch about is the fact that they are cash only. Also the salsa really isn't the best and the agua de horchata is pretty flat. Other than that make sure you head over here to get some delicious tacos at an even more delicious price. I give it 4 zau's. On a side not, I once saw the guy who works as a cook here at like Jewel or some grocery store. He was working their as well. We had a little Mexican standoff, trying to figure out how we knew each other. After about 5 seconds we gave the traditional head nod and gave each other props for our great memory as we realized where we knew each other from. read more

After a long day of shopping I just wanted some fast "real" mexican food. Drove by this place and decided...why not? Most people already know that the best Mexican food comes from the small places. A cash only place...this is the place you would most likely order to-go...because it does not look nice. Prices are reasonable...and the food is great. Chile relleno tacos are soooooo good and you get a whole chile relleno on the taco for less than $3...which is a steal! I am also guessing because of the long line on a random Wednesday night that this is a place is a popular neighborhood spot. Yummmy! I've lived in Westchester all my life and this place is THE place to go for fabulous mexican food. The prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are generous. They are even more fabulous because they are willing to customize anything you order The staff is very friendly and great with suggestions...like the chile reno. OMG LOVE IT! Definitely check it out. I went here years ago, but somehow forgot about it. I recently rediscovered it and turned my husband on to this place. He and I LOVE it! I almost always get a steak burrito and their homemade pico da Gallo. The staff are friendly, the service is pretty quick even when they are busy. Simple, fast, and yummy. Lately, on the nights that I have been too busy to make dinner, the BF has been stopping here on his way home from work to fend for himself. Last week, I tagged along, and I'm glad I did! This is definitely a hole in the wall, but the food has a ton of flavor, the staff is nice, and the price is right. My order was basic - two steak tacos on corn tortillas, with cheese, sour cream, and guacamole. The steak had really great flavor and the guac rocked. I've had a variety of Mexican food throughout the city of Chicago, as well as elsewhere. I would say that the flavor of the carne asada (steak) at this restaurant is not as pleasing to the palate. I have a favorite restaurant on the south side of the city and one northwest. Unfortunately, this restaurant doesn't make my list. If I was in the mood for Mexican and couldn't get to my two favorites, I suppose I'd give it another try. I really wanted to like it because it's in my neighborhood. The biggest disappointment is that they don't have the pickled carrots. That's one of the main things I look forward to eating when I grab Mexican fast food. I picked up a couple of tacos and a sorpa on the way home. They were pretty fantastic and awfully cheap. The tacos were delicious! Unfortunately, the tomatoes on them were a tad bland. My real problem came with the sorpa (sp?). It was doused in sour cream. Admittedly, I had never had one of these before but the idea sounded wonderful. Since I am not a sour cream kinda gal, I ended up scraping off much of the cheese with it. sad face. It was still good though with plenty of flavor. Cash only. Little hole in the wall that a few friends kept recommending to me but kept forgetting. I heard it's cash only so that also prevented me from going too since I rarely carry cash. Well I had cash and was looking to try yet another Mexican place in the area because all are disappointing. Well when I went in, they told me they now take credit cards (for a while now). The lady was very friendly unlike other places that show no appreciation for customers. Now on to the food. ..I ordered the sope combo. One al pastor and one carne asada. Both very good, no fat like most other Mexican restaurants in the area!! Huge turn off! The al pastor was great which is a hard one to please me. Steak also good, no fat! I really liked their red salsa which was unlike any other I've had before. It was a creamy tomato sauce, not too spicy. Also rice and beans were good. Rice better than most around here with more flavor. They also threw in a couple tortilla chips with my beans which tasted homemade. ..fresh and crunchy! Will definitely be back! For a small hole in the wall, they have a pretty extensive menu with reasonable prices. There friendly attitude went a long way, business don't know how much that helps. Ate here today, I ordered a carne asada burrito dinner. The dinner and soda came out to around $12.50. This was the same burrito that has disappointed me at taquerias around the city. I understand that the burrito should not be a bench mark as it's not an authentically Mexican dish buuuut it's in the name after all. Here is the sad list of most Chicago burritos: overcooked (most of the time pre cooked and reheated on the flat top to order) always under seasoned. Huge glob of canned beans (yes in can always taste the difference) sprinkle of cheese, and a shredded iceberg sad tomato salad with sour cream as the dressing. All rolled up into a pre packaged, over grilled flour tortilla. You know the burrito I speak of! Plated up with more canned beans and bagged rice lunch was served. Everything about them had flavor and you would probably be hard pressed to find Mexican food this good and cheap (key word) in the burbs. Flan was firm and flavor was rather light. Service was also pretty good. Had to deduct a star for the cash only policy. You know they probably had problems with that when there's a cash only sign right on the front door. Yum! I came from Melrose Park where there are so many Mexican restaurants. When I moved to Westchester I had to drive all the way to Melrose to get Mex food until I now! Moved into Riverside a couple of years ago and were very excited for Mexican food in the surrounding area. We went about everywhere in Berwyn and the several places west of us. Eventually we ran across this place and it is now our favorite. Pastor, chorizo and carne asada tacos are all excellent.
