They had it all, from apple cider (cold and hot!), apple cider donuts, ice cream, and fresh squeezed lemonade to a pumpkin patch and oodles of kids activities (slides, hill rolling, corn pits, apple sling shot, corn cannons, an epic corn maze, farm animals, pony rides and more). Need a pumpkin? Pick one in their patch! If you're looking for an idyllic fall festival, look no further but be warned that your kids won't want to leave! It is also dog friendly and we never had a long wait for a bathroom or any of the activities. At night they have movies and fire pits with s'mores kits.

There was "a lot to do," but for me, the "staples" of a fall festival were missing... no corn pit,…read moreno barrel train for the kids, no hay ride, and no big stacks of hay bails to climb on. Nothing to bounce on. Pony rides are $10 each which seems a bit much. I like that there were big slides, there was a cute obstacle course and mini maze, and some other random things like tug of war and tetherball. For the age ranges of my kids (2-8), it felt meh compared to some other places I've been more in the Hampton roads area. We don't do the large corn mazes l due too the kids ages, they just get bored, so my suggestion would be to have a separate cost for corn maze. For reference, wood ridge farm brewery has a sand-filled playground, corn maze and a petting zoo for a bit cheaper... they do have a train, hay ride, and bounce house, but it all costs extra. I guess you can't have it all.

For our 20th wedding anniversary we wanted something romantic and unforgettable. This hot air…read moreballoon ride was the perfect thing. (I try not to overuse the word "perfect" but my goodness, in this instance, other words fail.) Early yesterday morning, we met up in a designated parking lot where my husband and I got in the truck with pilot Liana and her ground woman/daughter, Nicole, for the rest of the drive to the launch site. It's a multi generational family business; we absolutely loved the dynamic between these two. They are a delight! ... As Liana started to go over some instructions, I got butterflies realizing this is actually gonna happen! (The website explains that a significant percentage of flights are canceled due to unsuitable weather conditions, but yesterday was, well, PERFECT.) We arrived at an open field where Liana and Nicole set up a balloon called "Renaissance." It looked enormous to us but apparently it's their smallest balloon, mostly reserved for private flights like ours. We got to help a bit which was SO COOL getting to be hands on with some of it. Takeoff was absolutely smooth and beautiful. Anyone fearing heights and/or motion sickness take it from me - I experience both in every day life and neither sensation at any point on this hot air balloon flight. It's a weird disconnect, Liana is good at explaining it, but I was perfectly at ease with the heights the entire time, and never nauseous. If either of those things are holding you back don't let them! You will love being in the basket of the hot air balloon and you will feel so proud of yourself for doing it! The ride itself is almost impossible to describe. Breathtaking views of fog resting above the winding river, the sun rising over the mountains, looking down on the backs of high soaring birds, all the neighborhoods that seem like toys from that height, tiny cars moving along ribbons of highway , ... so much natural beauty it was quite overwhelming to take it all in. A highlight was when Liana brought the balloon down for a "splash and dash", letting the bottom of the basket kiss the top of the water. Our balloon cast a rainbow reflection in the water and a heart shaped shadow on the trees. GUYS!! What could be more perfectly romantic than that!? Nicole met us w the truck at the landing site and was on the ground guiding the balloon with a tether as we came in. We were warned about a potential bumpy landing but it was so gentle and quiet, like a butterfly alighting on a twig. While the balloon was deflating on the lawn, a bald eagle flew over us, as if to tip it's wing to a perfect morning in the skies. Once Renaissance was rolled up and basket & balloon put away in the truck, we headed back to the parking lot for a post-flight toast with nonalcoholic bubbly. Everything about yesterday was even more wonderful than I imagined preflight. I highly recommend this experience and specifically this company and crew to anyone interested in hot air ballooning.

They will text you (or you can contact them) to determine the tentative launch location. We were lucky and the launch was at our hotel (Boars Head Resort)...which made it easy in the early morning so that we did not have to drive to the event. One person in our private group doesn't love heights but had no issues on this trip because Liana did a wonderful job controlling the balloon. Everyone commented how smooth the take off and landing went...it was impressive. We enjoyed smooth sailing over the countryside of Charlottesville. Lots of photo opportunities! We landed in our target area (farm field) and the crew quickly packed up the balloon in the company truck. We were driven back to the hotel in the truck and enjoyed a sparkling grape juice toast (and learned a bit of history on the post-flight toast). I would highly recommend this company to check hot air balloon ride off your bucket list.

There is a pavilion with picnic benches under it beside the park as well as a large grassy area offering ample sitting room. There are 2 separate playgrounds, one for 5 and under and one for the older kids. Just be careful when kids go back and forth from splash pad to playground because I have heard a couple stories of children slipping on the metal playground structures when wet, which could obviously be dangerous. One thing I do like about the playground is that the ground is the soft rubbery stuff and not pebbles or mulch, so my little one can crawl around as well. One thing that would make the playground better is if it was covered. Unless it's overcast or evening, the structures probably get too hot to use during the summer. Overall a very nice and fun place for the kids to burn some energy!

Perhaps it was a little of both - lol - but once I got a sense for how things worked, I really, really enjoyed it. There are a LOT of weather factors that have to align in order for the flight to happen, and I got super lucky in that regard and was able to do my flight. So, if you're interested in flying - you can reserve a spot in the online calendar. The morning flights are less expensive and longer because of the amount of fuel needed and the temperatures. I thought it would be pretty cold, but it's actually not too bad when you're in the basket - there's a bit of a warm pocket from all the fire. Mandy kept in touch via email to let us know what the weather conditions looked like. You don't have to pay ahead of time - just reserve the spot. Apparently it's very common to have cancelations form the weather, so she does not ask you to pay up front. My flight was shared with the pilot and four other people. We fit comfortably in the basket, and it was sturdier than I'd expected! I felt secure and safe the entire time. The views from the balloon were simply breath-taking - with all the fall colors and the beautiful morning, it was an amazing, spiritual experience! I loved it and I'll probably try to do it again sometime. Highly recommend this if you're in the Charlottesville area and looking for a unique experience!
