Gravest good. Solid vibe. Good value. Clean. Ample parking. Asked for something not on their menu (jerk shrimp), but they complied happily.

Taco Tuesday - Mahi Mahi and steak dry. Order of wings not cooked fully. All three of us disappointed.

Upscale Flavor in Downtown Lewes, but Something Was Missing…read more While on a business trip to Lewes, Delaware, I was in the mood for Mexican and Agave came highly recommended, so I decided to give it a try. What I really enjoyed right away was the location. This isn't along the main roadway or highway area that most people associate with Lewes, the more business-heavy stretch with fast food and chain spots. This is tucked into the charming downtown area near the canal, surrounded by neat little houses and a truly quaint, cool atmosphere. It's a great setting for an evening out. Agave is definitely more of an upscale Mexican restaurant, and the interior reflects that. Stylish, clean, and thoughtfully designed. I took a few photos because the ambiance adds to the experience. One thing that surprised me was that they don't bring out complimentary chips and salsa. At most Mexican restaurants, that's just part of the experience. Not a deal breaker, but it does set an expectation when you sit down. I started with the empanadas. They looked different from what I'm used to, but they were very tasty and full of flavor. They came topped with a fresh chopped tomato mixture, almost like a light salsa, along with a lime. After squeezing the lime over the top, the flavors really popped. Unique presentation and very flavorful. For my entrée, I ordered the veggie burrito. I asked the waitress if it came with chips on the side, and she said no, which was a little disappointing, especially considering the price point and upscale feel. When the burrito arrived, the presentation wasn't great, as you can see in the photo, but once again, the flavor delivered. Overall, I'm a bit mixed on Agave. The portion sizes were average, nothing extraordinary, but the food itself was definitely flavorful. For me, the lack of chips and salsa and the absence of a side with the burrito made it feel like something was missing, particularly at this price level. If I could offer one suggestion, adding chips and salsa or even a small side with the burrito would elevate the experience and better match the upscale positioning. Flavor-wise, they're doing a lot right. For now, though, I probably wouldn't return on my next trip.

The decor was simple and not over the top "oceany" as some tourist traps. I saw they were inland which I like. I try to avoid the neon wharf spots and I was so happy. I sat at the bar, which was full of welcoming locals and a tired traveling clown (me). The gravelly-voiced owner of I thing third generation paused a few times between sending out trays of steaming crab. He was a perfect blend of warm-hearted welcoming and hard-bitten tyrant. I went for the all you can eat feast at $69 (prices always subject to change) which comes with fries, hush puppies and coleslaw. I was assured the sizes were running large and it wasn't just a line. I was happy with the mediums. All I can say is they do crab RIGHT here. Fresh steamed ONCE so the meat is incredibly moist and succulent. And they just kept coming in trays of four. I ended up having a dozen which made it a deal at $69 compared at the price of a dozen à la carte. But who cares?!? They are blue crabs steaming and fresh and it was a feast. Side dish commentary: the fries are excellent. None of this cardboard tasting shoestrings. They were thick cut with skin on! The hush puppies classically tasty and the Cole slaw was not over dressed. Bonus!!! I can't wait to go back and try the she-crab soup and the bread pudding (highly recommend by my neighbor at the bar who is a local restaurateur).
