Passionfruit daquiri
Kali M.

I'm in Belfast for business for 3 weeks and this restaurant was recommended by my coworkers. I chose it for my first meal in town and I was so impressed! It was one of the best meals I've ever had. I had the passionfruit daquiri, which came with half of a passionfruit floating as a garnish. For a starter I had the salt and chili venison slaw. It was so delicious! A little salty and the slaw was a little spicy, but the meat was so good it certainly made up for it. I had the roast sirloin for dinner. Again the meat was amazing and tender; the potatoes were crisp; everything about the entrée was perfect! Finally, I ended with the creme brulee which was very good. My only complaints are that my server did not ask if I wanted a second drink and it took quite a while to get my bill. But the food and the decor were truly amazing. I plan on returning while I'm here.

Coco is a really cool new restaurant in Belfast and has already won awards! The food is absolutely worth the high price that's charged. You would struggle to get change from £60 for two people! So definitely not for those of us trying to embrace the student lifestyle! The menu is really nice and the offer things that are a little different from the norm! I got Thai duck pancakes followed by fish. both of which were perfectly cooked and really well presented! I was quite pleased with the portion sizes as well which are normally quite flimsy for a place of this type. The restaurant is funky, modern and contemporary and the glitter ball and artwork really add to the experience of the place! I can definitely understand why this place is being raved about and will defiantly be taking another trip back....once I've saved up a bit!

Lunch in Coco was a wonderful surprise because I did not expect them to have a full dedicated vegetarian menu. I visited with a party of four people, two of us are vegan and our waitress let us know the chef would be happy to veganise any of the dishes. I opted for aubergine salad starter which was filled with walnuts, pickles and beautiful fresh ingredients. Vegetable gnocchi was my main and it was fantastic, bursting with flavour. There was a "Lazy Bank Holiday Monday Menu" available (19/03/2018), offering two courses for £15.95, which was great value for such quality food. We also had two delicious bottles of Pinot Grigio. The waitresses who served us were extremely helpful and pleasant, plus the interior is beautiful, filled with plants, ornate patterned wallpaper and fascinating artwork by artist Trevor J Brown. I cannot believe it has taken me so long to visit Coco and cannot wait to return for the extensive vegan options, great food and fab service. A real Belfast star.

Eek! I have to say this place almost bankrupted me when I went as a lowly naive student trying to impress a girl on a date. However, the price is definitely justified. I feel disappointed in myself that I focused so much on the price as CoCo is definatley one of the best places I have ever eaten in Belfast. The interior is understated and chic. I say understated, but they do have a big glitter ball on the ceiling. It has cool and interesting artwork throughout the place which anyone would wish was theirs. The menu is locally sourced and seasonal to ensure patrons will always get the best food on offer from Northern Ireland. Overall this place is incredible. The dining experience is unforgettable and should by no means be missed. Be aware of the price but it is certainly worthwhile.

Always wanted to have a good excuse to eat here as I'd been told the food was excellent but really pricey. After getting a suitable cause for celebration which involved a small influx of cash I felt it would be try to see for myself. First impressions were that the whole place looked a tad too posh for our scruffy likes but we received a very warm welcome from the staff and were seated quickly. The dining room area out the back was pretty funky and lined with some arty eye-candy and we soon settled into enjoying a great meal. I'm not really sure how to describe the food style as there seemed to be a wee bit of everything in there. Being a fan of calamari I went for the garlic squid which was perfectly cooked and not too heavy on the old garlic which went down well with my companion. Next up was a kind've oriental scallops dish which was pretty unbelievable...really superbly presented and the taste was unique. With the wine we had that evening I'm too embarrassed to tell you how much it all cost but as a once in a blue moon treat you definitely can't beat this place. Pros: Great service and food. Cons: Money, money, money.

As soon as this place opened, I heard a lot of excellent reports and was dying to try it. At the first opportunity, I phoned to book a table on a Monday, for the Friday of that week. The sniffy-sounding bloke on the phone told me that they'd need the table back after an hour and a half. I said no thank you and goodbye. I didn't think about Coco for the next year until someone suggested recently that we give it a try. This time, we weren't given a strict curfew. On the odd occasion I eat out(!!), I like very much to go the whole hog - three courses, brandy, coffee, so an hour and a half the first time would've been ridiculous. It's fancy and highly polished, all right. There was a reasonably-priced lunch menu advertised outside, but we there for dinner and it was very expensive. Three courses for two people, bottle of medium-priced red, well over a hundred quid. The seafood dishes are fantastic, to be fair. Just save up for a while before you go, and hopefully nobody tries to kick you out before you've had a chance to think about dessert.

I hate it when restaurants do this, I can understand it for Christmas party bookings, but dislike when deposits are requested throughout the year. It would prevent me from returning with a large party in future. It's just a hassle trying to collect money from people you won't necessarily be seeing before an evening out. Alternatively one person has to cover the deposit before the meal, which is unfair and leaves them out of pocket until the night out. Other than this we had a good overall experience. Waiting staff were excellent and the menu is huge with a vast selection of dishes, even plenty of veggie options - burgers, pizzas, pastas etc. I ordered vegetarian fajitas which were served with a side of fries, 3 fajita pancakes, a large sizzling plate of mixed veg (mushrooms, peppers, onions, tomatoes) plus guacamole, sour cream and salsa. The guacamole and salsa weren't fresh, instead they seemed quite processed. But it was good food - not great - but filling, tasty and reasonable for the price. Our whole party enjoyed their meals. We also ordered dessert and the Banoffee Pie was absolutely gorgeous- though I did have dessert envy when I saw the Nutella Dough Balls some of the others ordered! Ginger, gin, beer and plenty of wine flowed. In total two courses, drinks and tips cost approximately £35 per person. A good night was had by all. This is a nice, casual, relaxed restaurant and I would return - but not with a large party as I dislike the insistence on a deposit and enforced service charge. Whilst I recognise the reasoning for these charges and appreciate they are becoming common in a lot of restaurants, I will primarily take my custom to establishments who don't insist on a deposit. A good, solid 3.5 stars from me...

But, I had over looked this recently renovated restaurant, built into the foundations of the red bricked building. Oxford Exchange is a superbly welcoming chique bohemian restaurant. Surrounded in black, leather and warmly lit the long sloping restaurant leads to a semi-open kitchen at the rear of the premises. A large bar and small seated balcony for lunch hours complete the set-up. The food is right up my street. A combination of rich meaty main courses, zesty starters and interesting desserts. On my first trip I had deep-fried goats cheese balls served with a acidic chilli salsa. Superbly tart and creamy cheese balanced perfectly by crisp shallot, fresh cubes of tomato and puckering chilli. The main. A chunk of well sourced rib-eye steak, crab claws and huge prawns. A modern take on the traditional surf and turf, the steak was gamey and woody, hugely flavoured and balanced perfectly by the clean slight iodine character from the freshest local crab. All brought together with a nutty beurre noisette. This was served with a rich fruity Rioja. The prices are very reasonable, the surroundings warm and welcoming, the service fast and friendly and the food absolutely superb. This is an often over-looked little eatery which demands your attention.

I had the 6oz chicken Memphis burger and it was huge! The 12oz was also ordered at my table and it was massive! Not one for the faint hearted. It was delicious. Dimmed with a vegetarian friends and on first glance the menu appeared to have no veggie options but after asking the waitress she let us know that there was separate menu for vegetarians and a decent selection. The staff were excellent and even helped to resolve a problem we had with our order (my fault, not theirs) in excellent style. Overall nice to see an American eatery executed with the quality and service you would expect to find.

Maybe I've been watching too many American films... My boyfriend, his parents, his granda and I all descended upon Blue Chicago for my boyfriend's 21st birthday lunch. On a chilly Sunday in January, this place was absolutely packed! We were led to a small booth, which was far too tiny for all five of us, but were moved when another, larger booth had been vacated. This style of restaurant doesn't allow for big groups mind you, and even in the bigger booth, we were slightly cramped. However, the friendly waitresses (not a roller-skate in sight) were great, and the food was delicious. Chicken goujons, salad and steak were all had at our table...not a critical comment about any of them. The portions were huge, particularly for lunchtime, but I love getting my money's worth, so that was definitely a plus. Without a doubt, the best moment was when the 60s soft rock music was replaced by an incredibly cheesy version of 'Happy Birthday'. It did take me a few moments to realise that the huge cake coming towards us was for my boyfriend, who was slightly embarrassed by this stage. Obviously his parenst had arranged this with the restaurant, but it really was a lovely touch. Grabbing some cake, my boyfriend and I rolled out of Blue Chicago, our stomachs fit to burst. I'll definitely be doing that sometime again soon. Perhaps not the rolling though.

I walked up the dark stairs to be greeted by one of the most friendly waitresses you are ever likely to meet. She sat me at a table of four even though I was on my own which made me feel less of a loser. I sat down and browsed the menu made up of various burgers. I was going to go for the double cheese burger when the waitress came over and showed me their offer. A double cheese burger, fries and a drink for £8! Unreal! I obviously went for that deal, helpfully guided by the waitress. The food took about 10 minutes to come, the chips were served on a tray and the burger dame covered in foil. Packed lunch style! The chips were deep fried but still had a potatoey consistency. The burger was American style just the way I like it. A soft bun and a tender burger patty with plenty of fresh salad. Incredible! The decor is dive style! Think graffiti! They have an alcohol licence too so if you fancy a beer and burger knock yourself out! Easy five stars, for service alone. I sort of found it strange that this place opened around the time that Five Guys appeared in Victoria Square, given that it has basically the exact same menu as Five Guys, with the exact same idea of it being a sort of "build your own" with as many toppings as you want. Kind of felt like they were trying to ride the coat-tails of Five Guys, but unfortunately they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it. It has the same high price as Five Guys (for 2 people, one having a double burger with bacon, the other having a single burger with cheese, some angry fries to share and two milkshakes, it was £24), but unfortunately it doesn't quite have as much of an appeal in terms of the quality of the food. The burgers are quite dry, they're extremely messy, which isn't a great thing if you're trying not to spill it all over yourself, the redeemer is the crack sauce which is pretty great. The fries are strange, they're the same quality as you would get from a good chip shop, but I don't think they goes very well with the whole American restaurant aesthetic they're going for. Really, if you're wanting to support local, eat here. If you're wanting to have something a bit more put together but for the exact same price, go eat at Five Guys.

The place is kitted out impressively with a large long bar, plenty of prints on the wall and on the day we were in the fire was roaring. Settling in one of the booths we perused the substantial menu. Meat eaters are well serviced though there were plenty of veggie options as well. Settling for something called a Western Burger I must admit I was not disappointed when it arrived. It was huge and covered in a lovely smoky BBQ sauce and the plate of chips was immense, missing the starter was definitely a wise choice for us. The bar also did us a couple of nice pints which washed the food down nicely. In fact so nicely, what with the roaring fire and comfy seats we were loathe to leave and actually stayed on for a few more afterwards. A nice little surprise tucked away up this street, I think the prices were maybe more 'hotel-like' than I would have preferred but the décor and ambience more than made up for it. Pros: Excellent food, not busy. Cons: Pricey.
