Beer Battered Cod & Chips with Mushy Peas & Tatare!

My only Fish & Chips venture during my week in Belfast, Mourne Seafood Bar delivered! It's a place that gives you one large piece. Everything was clearly fresh, the fries and fish were blazing. Great service, cool ambiance. Definitely worth a shot!

Belfast is of course a sea town and you can expect to find amazing seafood here. This was a stop on the Belfast food tour. A simple pair of oysters, locally harvested this morning and shucked just before consumption, this was delicious. An absolutely perfect snack and I will need to return to see what else we have for a meal here later. [Review 1896 of 2024 - 874 in United Kingdom - 22918 overall]

Delicious food here! The Scallop and Chorizo Risotto was a great combination of flavors. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was to DIE for! Service was attentive, yet not obtrusive. The atmosphere was an eclectic mix of old and new. Prices were a wee high, but we felt it was worth it.

This place came recommended and we were not disappointed. The food, especially the oysters, were amazing. The service was only on point and had very friendly staff. Not to mention, it's right next door to a historic pub!

Came here last week when visiting Belfast. Easily the best of the three seafood restaurants I tried while there. We shared the seafood chowder appetizer, my boyfriend had the risotto, and I had the pan fried seabass. He also got an apple cider and I had a cocktail. Everything was amazing. The seabass entree was honestly one of the best dishes i've ever had. I can't recommend this restaurant enough!

The locals will tell you that Northern Ireland isn't known for "great" food but they highly recommend popping into Mourne for some fresh seafood. The food and service did not disappoint. The seafood chowder was well flavored and packed with different types of fish, my seafood bass came whole with potatoes and it was nicely seasoned. The high light of the evening for me was the warm sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream! Wow, so good! As luck would have it, they had a tad bit of Jamaican Wray & Nephew White Rum on the bar, my fave rum & rare to find in Europe bars. If in Belfast, I definitely recommend making a reservation at Mourne. They certainly made my birthday dinner memorable.

Everything we got was phenomenal. You cannot go wrong here and the price is crazy low for the high quality you get. I cannot recommend Mourne's enough.

It was pretty good but wasn't the hype I expected. Whole sea bass was good value Linguine was not worth it Chowder was good but small portions or big size charge and a bit salted. Once again pretty good and fresh but for the money and hype and big reviews not worth returning in my opinion.

    Chowder ok only

Consider Belfast isn't a foodie city, Mourne is a better restaurant where you can get some good seafood. Oysters, mussels, and the langoustines were all fresh and tasty. Crab claws was a miss, don't order, they tasted frozen. We tried walking in on a Sat night but was turned away as they had a full house so we made reservation for Sun night instead. Weekend can get busy so do make resy ahead of time.

I went for the first time a couple of weeks ago and really badly want to go back asap. The interior is just the kind I love, all starched linen tablecloths and napkins. The atmosphere however is not starched, well not at our table anyway and no-one complained so it must be the kind of place you don't have to whisper. Tedfords is famous as a seafood restaurant which fits with its location right down at the water in Belfast. I had smoked salmon, crab mayo and quail egg. Without the quail egg. If you've read any of my other reviews, you'll know that eggs make me hurl. The good news is that the waiter didn't huff or puff of look as if he felt sorry for me. The other good news is that the salmon was fab - delicate and beautifully flavoured. I felt obliged to have fish again for main course and boy was I glad. On of my group had recommended the curried monkfish and I now do too. It was sublime - the meaty fish was matched brilliantly by the creamy sauce and fragrant coconut rice. I was all full up with no room for desert but managed 2 spoons of the husband's chocolate soufflé with fresh (huge) strawberries. Bliss. Tedford's is certainly not cheap but for a special night out as a couple or with friends, it is my new must go to.

The ambiance is cozy, upscale, and yet makes for a nice place to hang out with friends. Go for the pork belly which comes as a big chunk of meat, perfectly seared and chewy. The monkfish was the standout of the night. I was congratulated for my menu prowess with a "best lineup of the night" comment, but I think the monkfish was the MVP. The lobster roll was crispy, buttery but not watery, and substantial without being overly fishy. The curry sauce that accompanied the dish, I could have eaten alone or just with the rice though the thick cut and well seasoned fish made it all the better. All around the mulberry bush, the monkfish was the best I've had. Dessert was this assortment of sweets that put together I think looks like a muppet's head. The peanut butter ice cream was delicious with a great balance of sweet and slight salty savoryness. The custardy chocolate was also excellent and on the dark side which offset the sweetness of the ice cream. The crispy biscuits provided a texture difference and cut through the sweetness to keep it from getting cloying. The service was a bit aloof though. Our waiter over-poured prosecco to overfill the glass, spilled wine on the table, and nearly knocked out someone with a plate.o the owner or employees.

Service was brisk and cost excellent at circa £5 for my meal plus a bottle of mineral water. Grapevine's major drawback is the size, it's a very small cafe with few seats. This puts me in a good position to critique it in relation to the others. The positives of Grapevine are there for all to see, it is in an excellent central location for both office workers and hungry shoppers. It also has brilliant outside seating. Smokers will feel welcome, as each table is equipped with an ashtray, which is actually something you don't see too often these days. Inside they have Special Boards literally crammed full of delicious lunch options. Whitebean Stew and Homemade bread caught my eye and it's definitely something I'm going to try on my next visit, provided it hasn't been scrubbed off the specials board. I love the seating set up inside; they have those big high benches with stools that face out and you can sit and watch the world go by while enjoying a coffee, bit of fruit or a hearty stew. Overall I think the Grapevine is an endearing wee café, it's got everything you want from a city center food shack - beaut grub and a relaxing set up, I'll be back that's for sure.

The outside of this place was an industrial-looking building that nobody would have thought it's a fish n chips place. Parking was TIGHT! So be warned!! The moment you walked in, it gave out an old harbor diner feel (not sure if that's how you describe it)... Tile flooring, straight 90-degree wooden booths. They have both takeout and dine-in service, so we decided to enjoy the moment and sat in for our fishy. Most of the items have both regular size or what they called a "supper" size, which just means more on the chips... or fries for us North Americans. We ordered the classic Fresh Battered Fish and a Pastie (huh?) As you wait for the goodies, you could hear the sound of fish or chips being fried, that's really music to my ears! The fish was LONG! Fried to perfection with minimal batter, just the way it's supposed to be to showcase the main character- FISH! Despite ordering the regular fish n chips, the portion of the fries was perfect for us... those fries were THICK CUT and the size of my thumb!! And then, our mystery Pastie arrived. My first thought was "a flatten ball of..." FISH PASTE and potato (pure guesses on the potato part, not 100% sure). It was a very interesting fried loveliness for us... it tasted a little like those Asian fish sausages with onions. Overall, CHEAP and WORTH THE DRIVE! Both of these combined were only GBP 8 something (about CAD$13)! If you ordered the exact same thing back home, the fish n chips along already cost more than $13.

It's right next to the river and has loads of outdoor seating, so on a good day, there's nothing nicer than having a cold drink and watching the world go by. On the other hand, the location is about all I like about it. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the staff can be a little disinterested. IT also gets stupidly busy on a Saturday night, so if it's not warm enough to be outside, you're packed inside like sardines! The food is so-so. I find it over-priced for the quality you get. I remember once calling in after a mammoth walk around Belvoir forest. I was totally famished and didn't think I'd make it back to my boyfriend's ouse without re-fuelling, so I stopped in and ordered a panini. It was horrible, there was hardly anything to it and it cost something stupid like £7! I ended up having to go round to the chippy a bit later to actually fill myself up! The toilets are also some of the worst I've experienced. There aren't as bad as some other places (Rain, I'm looking at you), but on a busy night they just never seem to be clean. I don't know whether this is because of ineffective cleaning from the staff or if the customers are all just dirty brutes! I think I'll sit on the fence for this one. I'd definitely recommend it on a summer's day, but I'd probably tell you to avoid it after dark!
