This place sucks. Went there to buy some work gloves and the employee cared more about his two small children... one behind the counter in a crib and one that was just roaming the the store. Everyone beware! Don't step into this establishment, the owner is tired of sweeping after everyone of you that bring in dirt and aren't considerate of it. Depending on his mood that day depends of the day everyone is having. YES! He definitely takes it personal and yes he does charge you an extra couple cents so you won't notice. (for a bag) whether you get one or not, you'll still get charged. yes there is a surcharge for debit/credit. So use cash and say no bag and make sure he don't charge you for it. Carlton Cobb owned & operated this store for at least 30 years and it was a great local asset for the surrounding neighborhoods. He was friendly, helpful and understood the maintenance issues of his customer base and their older homes. His staff mostly reflected his values. Since Carl sadly died in 2022, the business has slid to the level of an unpleasant convenience. I think the new owner must be an absentee. Although the fixtures & shelving have been modernized and the inventory very slightly expanded, the staff rarely greet shoppers. And when presented with any issue other than "give me X number of these items and take my money," clerks act as if they are interrupted and inconvenienced. Customers can no longer expect expertise, helpfulness, or even gratitude or appreciation for bringing their business here. read more

went to store looking for a specific size bolt. initially manager helped find what I needed. but bolt just seems too small. so I called my friend who is helping with project so we can figure out a better size bolt. so I have two bolt in hand, but looking for another size( while on FaceTime with friend) . manager comes and says ( if you dont put stuff where you found it, just leave the store and go somewhere else) , friend on face time tells him he is looking for another bolt, manager says. I saw you move 4 bolts and place them in different spots where the don't go. So just go somewhere else, you guys always come here and do that . "You guys" what does that mean?! Does that mean Hispanic guys?! friend on facetine ask to speak to owner, to put a complaint in. manager said to take a picture of the store info and send it, well he's the one who will get the complaint and will not go anywhere. manager said, that owner told him to do just that, to tell customers to go some else, if they out item in wrong spot. Will never come back to this store even if it's a block from home. it's not the first time I have not been treated right, because my english is not great, but it will be the last at this place. Very sad to post this poor review but after seeing I'm not the only one, I think folks should be aware. Mine is a small matter. Needed some small hose clamps. picked up the first to see $1.49 which was a good price, so I grabbed 3 more. I take it to the counter; young guy says $8.70 please. I question the total and ask why 2 clamps are priced $2.49 and 2 are $1.49 for the exact item. He says he doesn't know but those are the prices. I go back to find 2 more priced at $1.49 and all the others are priced $1.99 LOL. It wasn't worth the hassle. I take my CC receipt to see that I was charged an additional .10 for something, who knows but whatever. Later I see my CC was charged $9.00 even though my receipt shows $8.70. I'm thinking that's illegal. Not worth my time to fight, but buyer beware, this place used to be awesome. I don't suspect they'll be around much longer. read more

I hope the new owner reads this reason being the employees that are there are useless. I walked in today & they were playing dominoes on the front counter. I was kind of greeted & asked if I needed help but don't like the feeling of being watched like I'm going to steal something. I'm sorry to hear that the original owner passed away in 2021. He was a very nice & good man. These guys who work there now need to find a different job because hardware isn't there Forte. Another warning: The item I bought and got my money back doing a credit card chargeback was 39.99 plus tax and a credit card use fee that was not mentioned to me. I bought the same item many years ago for 22.99. I could see raising the price to 29.99, but 39.99 is outrageous!!! My husband likes to go here because it's a local owner and he has been going here for over 25 years. But, went there a week ago to get a part and I didn't know they charge a percentage for a card fee. The card fee was not on my receipt. So when I get my bank statement the price came up $!.59 more, which isn't much but things like that screws up on my banking if the total with fee isn't on my receipt. I phoned to make sure and they said they charge a percentage for bank fees. You should change how you do your business and show the full total on receipt. read more

When I lived in the Fresno High area and now in my current home, I can always rely on Cobb's to have what I need. I don't always know what I need, but they will help you to find what it is just by asking. I don't know about you, but standing around in a warehouse without learned helpers to help you find what you need is not my idea of a great weekend. Cobbs is the last of the Good Old Hardware stores! I am grateful I live walking distance literally a few blocks away! I use to come here with my dad as a child back in the early 80s & It hasn't changed one bit ! I say that in a good way! You get amazing customer service & they are always quick to answer any questions ! I can't emphasize enough that they have what you need without having to go online and waiting for product ! This is the best little hardware store in Fresno. If you have an older house...? These guys know what is up! If they don't have it, they know where to point you. If you already know about this little gem, maybe you remember when they changed owners? Back in 2009 I think... It was a sad day for me. I gave the new guy a try but it was just a strange feeling. The place felt empty & hollow. I left town for about 6 months in 2010 & when i came back, a very strange & wonderful thing had happened. I was driving down Palm past Shields & there was a sign in the window that said "UNDER OLD MANAGEMENT". What, you say? I could not believe it. The place looked exactly the same... like they never left. This awesome, surreal hardware store time warp. I still see Carl in there & sometimes even Kopi! I have recently learned that Cobb's started out as a grocery store, back in the 40s. But, now they are a very good old-fashioned hardware store. If you live in an old house, this is definitely where you want to go. They have toilet seats that fit those porcelain fixtures dating back to the 30s and 40s. You can get an old house key copied there because they have the blanks with which to make them. Service is also old fashioned. Very gentlemanly, very kind. Shop local. read more

I used to love shopping here for years; I won't shop there any longer. I think they changed ownership or manager recently because service is terrible now. There is some young kid there now that seems to run things now. Every time I went there he was deep into his phone pretty much ignoring me when I walk in. When he did try to help he didn't know anything about the products; not like the guys that have been there for years. I ask for something simple, he says these are available, I say I want this one. He says we don't have that one. I ask which ones do they have then. He goes and checks and comes back saying we don't have any of those options. I ask the other new guy about whats going on and he says the guy that checked does inventory and that if anyone knows he would. Bottom line - horrible service now, Please bring back the employees or someone that actually know about Hardware. I won't go back till there's a change of "help" there. read more

I've been to Cobb's many times over the years. Its a nice mom and pop type of store, or otherwise known as an "independent". Its a small hardware store that has survived even though there are places like Home Depot and Lowe's to contend with. Why I believe they are still in business is the customer service. Many times I have been there and not known what to do, or what to get, and the employees have not only walked me to the spot in the store to help me find what I needed, but also explained my options, and honestly sometimes recommended the cheaper option. There have even been times where they have told me how to fix what I was there to by parts to repair. Prices have been decent, but the customer service is spectacular. I have never gotten this level of quality help from a store, as I do from these guys. I hope this place stays around for a long time. read more
