I grew up playing basketball competitively (high school) and have coached a little league myself, I wanted to share the love of the sport with my children. I was mindful and concerned about the large group (5-on-5) experience (e.g. physical and level differences across the group, playing time, attitude) at a young age and wanted a focus on technique and fundamentals. To build confidence and emphasize skill, teamwork, strategy, sportsmanship, and fitness over winning. I explored options and found coach Mickey. Coach Mickey has been a wonderful influence for my son who is shy and on the smaller side with a more gentle demeanor. This is a small 2-on-2 setting for a half court scrimmage and the cohorts are matched by skill level to keep the games interesting. Truthfully, my son bans me from watching and he very much enjoys this safe space with coach Mickey - looks forward to every session. He started around 3rd grade and is now in middle school with strong fundamentals. At one point he complained the kids on the elementary playground didn't know how to play basketball during recess, and I said not everyone gets to have Coach Mickey! We'll see if my son transitions over to 5-on-5 competitive play, but as far as I'm concerned, he's having fun and mission accomplished! Thank you Coach Mickey! I look forward to starting my girl when she's ready. read more

My son is always into basketball. We practice with him on the weekends but as he got older, we know we won't be able to fulfill his need anymore. He will need a skilled coach to teach him and not just parent who accompany him playing. We went on Yelp and found Coach Mickey. We set up evaluation time and got him into the group that fit him the best. Right from the first session, my son learned so much! He always looking forward to go to the session every week and also asking if Coach Mickey available in any of the school break so he could get additional session. Coach Mickey teaches fundamental skills that needed. The small group session make him able to identify each kid's needs, physical strength and boost confidence of each player. We are so glad we found him! read more

Coach Mickey is very professional, friendly, and helpful. He can always organize efficient training sessions and point out the parts that need to be improved. His classes are always interesting, he can teach basketball concepts and skills in an understandable way, and provide practical suggestions on how to train after the class, which can help students to improve their basketball level. I would always recommend having class with Coach Mickey! read more

My younger cousin from abroad was coming to stay with us for the summer and enjoyed basketball so we signed him with up with Mickey. My cousin is 14 and did not know English, so although that was a concern at first Mickey was completely patient and most importantly made my cousin feel comfortable. Even through he was the only one who didn't know English among the other students, Mickey was able to instruct the class without it being too disruptive to the class. The other students started helping my cousin naturally through Mickey's leadership and I was very grateful for that. I highly recommend Mickey as a basketball coach for both children and adults. If it's for your child then make sure she/he can shoot a ball towards a 10ft rim. Just make sure you can reach the rim with the ball, that's his only requirement! read more

I found Coach Mickey on yelp because my 6 yr old kid showed much interest in basketball. He was so happy and got improved so much after just a few sessions of training. Highly recommended! read more

Great coach....teaches the FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS of basketball which is very important for kids to learn. Thanks you

We found Coach Mickey on CoachUp in late May 2021. We were uncertain about the service, but even after one group training session and one private with Coach Mickey, my 10th grade son (in 9th grade in May) already greatly improved his shooting technique, on-court play sense, physical strength, and confidence. Coach Mickey immediately identified where my son needed to grow and how to do it, and he communicated it with a positive, encouraging, but also no-nonsense, clearcut approach. He is patient and never shames, ridicules, or insults--he knows how to motivate each type of player. My son says that Coach Mickey gives clear, concise verbal instructions and also physically demonstrates drills, skills, and corrections. He offers real & applicable skills. This may seem like what every coach should be able to do, but it is not. We are now 2+ months in, and according to my son, Coach Mickey is the best coach he has ever had--no question. I am sure there have been a few other gifted coaches, but my son may have been too young to either fully identify or appreciate them, or it was just not a great fit (on the surface, my son is not uber-competitive, and he is not motivated by typical incentives). He has been coached by 20+ coaches over the past 9 years at different organizations: YMCA, NJB, 3 different local AAU clubs, Stanford University and Palo Alto summer camps, and local schools. We are grateful to have found a professional, punctual, and organized coach who knows basketball and is kind and great with kids. Totally recommend him! read more

Strongly suggest Coach Mickey to you if you are looking for improvement of your basketball finish, teamwork, off-hand ball movement and fundamental body training. I am really happy to work with Coach Mickey. Coach Mickey cares every trainee. He would love to customize the drills based for different trainees. For example, my friends and I hope to improve the our teamwork, movement and passing. Coach Mickey focus on this area across all our training sessions. Coach Mickey was friendly, patient and knowledgable. I am not good at finishing the ball so sometimes I get really frustrated when I missed a easy layout or a open shot. Coach Mickey encouraged me and keep telling me some tips and instructions so that I can adjust my steps, body movements and hand position to get things better. The best part of my whole training experience is the communication between Coach Mickey and us. We use message to communicate all the way through. After every training session, I can get text feedback from Coach Mickey about what parts I am doing good and what parts I need to improve in the future. That's really helpful for me to practice and get better performance in pick-up games. Overall, I would like to recommend Coach Mickey to the review readers. He is always open to have trail, I guess. read more

Mickey is a great basketball coach. We mainly focus on shooting form and it indeed help a lot to change my inconsistent shooting form. In addition, the group session is fun and helpful. Lots of useful drills I can use even after the class. Strong recommendation! read more

Mickey is a really great coach! He's really detail orientated, goes at your own pace and doesn't pressure you to do something you're not ready for. I really appreciate his love for the game and how much basketball knowledge he has. He meticulously analyzes your skill level to meet your needs so you can be the best player you can be. I'm really glad he's my coach I got a lot better since I've started working with him and my basketball IQ is a lot better. read more

Mickey was amazing with my son. He was so vested in helping him get good at basketball, he was practically like an older brother. Mickey took a 360 approach to getting good at bball - focussing on basic fitness skills, as well as shooting skills and team play approaches and strategy. Often times Mickey would invite my son to just play actual games with his friends, and then give him feedback after. It helped my son feel and become very confident in the game. Would recommend Mickey any day! read more

Coach Mickey works so well with little kids! My son was not the sporty type, he used to have low muscle tone issue and had gross motor delay. When he started learning basketball with Coach Mickey at age 7, he had no experience and was not confident at all. Coach Mickey made it so fun and engaging that my son is looking forward to every class now. Now he has attended Coach Mickey's classes for 6 months, he had a lot of growth in basketball and is much stronger. He's definitely more confident now, he started to play basketball with friends in school and made more friends. A few weeks ago he joined a weekly practice with a big group of kids and is able to keep up the practice with kids older than him. Thank you Coach Mickey! read more

I found coach Mickey over the summer after looking at several options for my 5 year old son to start some sport activity that was safe during the pandemic. I was immediately impressed by Mickey's level of professionalism, care and skill when teaching young kids basketball. He brings a combination of fun, discipline and fundamentals to his curriculum that the kids really enjoy. Week over week, you can tangibly see the improvement in shooting, dribbling and overall agility. The kids enjoy a mix of games, drills and warmups over an hour. He also communicates and practices safe Covid protocols (we're in a class of 2-4 kids and everyone is masked) which was one of our biggest concerns when starting our son in sports. I played competitive basketball in the past and I can say Mickey is an exceptional basketball coach and brings a lot of expertise. Highly recommended if you're looking to start your child (or even yourself!) in basketball or enhance any existing skills. read more

Mickey has done a great job with our son, who is a late-starter in basketball, starting at age 14. Mickey helped him build the skills to play the game. Our son loves Mickey's attitude and positive spirit. His feedback is always constructive which helps him to build skills while building confidence. He makes things fun which keeps him enjoying the game. Over the years we've had many kids take lessons with many coaches in many different sports and, in our opinion, Mickey is as good as it gets. read more

Coach Mickey is great he has a great and simple way to teach the kid the fundamentals without stressing them to do it right, it's starts with the one thing you need. I also have taken a class myself and it was fun, and i was in a group class with another person and it was competitive. It was competitive because he would always say first one to how ever many baskets which made it some more fun. We also played against each other so he could tell us to play live and we would play live 1 vs. 1 basketball. In conclusion if your looking for a great beginner or intermediate coach' Coach Mickey is the best coach to go to for that! read more

Coach Mickey assessed our daughter's skill level and matched our daughter with a group of players who are similarly skilled. Mickey deserves everyone of these stars! Hand down the best coach we have hired for any sport! Mickey has changed the way my son sees basketball! Mickey's focus was on helping my son build a set of skills such as endurance, techniques, court etiquette etc This complete approach took our son's very average performance to one that helped him play at his best. All this in our one hour with Mickey! He also had such a positive attitude and came to every lesson with a smile despite his very busy day. Lastly I would like to comment that my son's favorite sport is basketball and it would not be the case if we did not have the one-on-one instruction we got! read more

Coach Mickey does an amazing job coaching my 12 year old son. My son hates physical activity and only wants to spend his free time playing video games. I started picking up basketball in middle school but had no formal training. I knew some basics but didn't know how to advance. Coach Mickey is patient, encouraging and has taught me many things to improve my skills. He pushes me to strive for excellence but never fails to encourage me when I don't get it, and keeps showing me in different ways how to do it right. After a couple of sessions with him, I was excited to find out that I can do what I thought I can't or easily gave up before, and I look forward to achieving more "mission impossible" in the future! I am really thankful to be coached by him! read more
