Thee food here is good. The chicken lahksa was very tasty and flavorful, something you can't find in traditional "Pad Thai"/Pho places. The infused sake is very cool as well. The bubble tea is good; a bit overpriced considering how much ice you get in one for $3. Honestly, my biggest issue with this place is the service. It's seat yourself, which is OK, but makes it so easy to be ignored. We called ahead for an order and they didn't start making it until we got there. CO is my new favorite restaurant in Charleston. The food is phenom and the ambiance is fantistic. And the prices are hard to beat anywhere in downtown. Most expensive priced entree on the menu is $13. That's an appetizer for many restaurants in Charleston. Have tried every appetizer on the menu and love them all. All the dumplings are worthy of ordering. My favorite is the curry shrimp, tasty and tender. The banh mi are also very good, with excellant bread, the foundation upon which every good sandwich is based. The grilled steak is my favorite. Suoer option fo a lunch. Then there is the Pho and Ramen. A can't miss at CO. Large bowl of noodles with very flavorful broth with very tender meat. Great for a lunch or dinner. And all for just $10. For noodle and riice dishes, the com chien is done perfectly, especially like the shanghai sausage and chicken option. The atmosphere was nice and trendy. The service was fine. I ordered the Beef Pho, and the best way to describe it was white person pho. The broth lacked the depth of flavor that I've come to enjoy so much from authentic Vietnamese restaurants. It kind of tasted like the flavoring packets from cheap ramen. Broth was very rich and flavorful, generous portion of chicken and shrimps. The only minor drawback is a huge portion of their dining area has communal seating. Sometimes the wait staff can make up for the food... not in this case. Coming in from Tampa we were hoping trendy would add a new flavor to some classic meal but we'd highly recommend keeping it traditional vs whatever is going on here. The curry was watered down and the flavor didn't pop at all. My wife and I shared spring rolls, I had to ask them to be removed from our check, no flavor and these should be served with a peanut sauce not the sauce they're using. The Pho, thumbs down, Korean bowl, thumbs down. Lastly, the waitress had to go up and down the steps to get items and didn't seem overly excited to get us sauces that should be already sitting on every table to begin with, sauce (Sriracha)and hoisin sauce. Not sure if the management should put some general stock upstairs or what would help but our kids had to wait 10+ minutes to get sauce and we had to ask twice. No one greeted us in and the waitress did nothing to make us enjoy our experience or make us feel welcome. Lastly the I ordered at mojito and it was far from good, think they left out the simple syrup but at that point we didn't want to keep saying anything to our waitress so I just drank it. They need to bring in an Asian food expert to try all of the dishes and take the feedback to heart or people will be wasting money on overpriced trend. Talking to local shop owners on that strip, they recommend going to chains because these places are tourists traps and they don't go there. 2 stars is honestly too generous here. My family loves going to dinner and if we get an experience, meaning good staff and friendly fun or good food it's a win, this was lacking both and they need to re-evaluate what their trying to accomplish, if the goal is sucking out cash from tourists, mission accomplished. Just went to Co for my third time last night. First two times were great and 5-star worthy. However, last night I came with a group of 8-10 people and we had an uncharacteristically poor experience. Positives first: -Great atmosphere. Modern, very cool vibe. -Full bar with some (not many) great beers on tap -Great date spot -Great food, vegetarian friendly -Decent prices Negatives: We were told 25 minute waiting time when we arrived, which turned out to be over an hour. During the wait our group of 8 had to wait, crammed in the corner by the bar where there was NO AIR CONDITIONING. People were sweating. Very stuffy. After finally being seated, the service was extremely slow. My dinner entree was last to arrive... a solid 10 minutes after the rest of my table was served. We ended up at the restaurant for 3 full hours when all was said and done which has to be a record for me. Note: This was during restaurant week, so I understand things get busy. But man. Unfortunately, the mango spring rolls were made from very under-ripe (crunchy!) mangos and the wrap on it was so tough that I couldn't bite through it and it tasted like plastic. I very rarely leave poor reviews (actually I can't think of a time I ever have), but I'm really put out with this location, despite the fact that their food is actually really good. I've been here probably 8 times now (I've frequented it because it's so close to my work and they have small portions and happy hour) and I can't say that I've ever actually felt welcomed there. I've literally never seen one bartender crack a smile towards a customer at the bar or act attentive...they all look miserable no matter the day and time, always seem very disconnected with all clientele. I always order a vietnamese coffee or BlackBerry lychee cooler and they are both so great and so yummy...but with the coffee I *always* get a 3/4 cup of ice and like 3oz of coffee...the ice is just excessive...every time, and it's so obvious and obnoxious. The other day I ordered beef kimchi dumplings and noticed that there was very little kimchi this time (my fave part) and the girl told me it would be $2 to get more...haha alrighty then, nvm. Probably the most frustrating was when I came in one Friday at about 1:30/2pm and the place was empty, I only saw kitchen workers. I asked if they were open and if there were a server around and they said yes and to check upstairs...so I did and it was completely dead. So as I come back down a large man is walking in the front door (looks somewhat authoratative) and I said "hey are y'all open today?" Since it certainly did not seem so but no note was posted on door. He looked at me with a smart ass look on his face and said "what do you want?" I said I was just going to get a coffee/cooler to go and he said "I mean we arent serving anything right now." Uhm...okay? So then I said "okay so should I come back around 4pm or...?" And he said "I mean idk we're all pretty busy doing things"....okay smart ass. I cant believe I even went back there since then but I figured maybe he had had a bad day. So unfortunately I'm over this place. It's a shame, their menu is varied and the dishes are very good but they need a straight up bootcamp on hospitality experience and bedside manner. Don't apply for an industry to serve people daily if you're going to act like they're a burden. Only decent thing I can say about one bartender I've only seen once (long blonde hair)...she was okay and didnt act completely rude and put out while I was there. Also, their food timing is not consistent. The girl next to me ordered Spring rolls and waited 40 mins...she asked one of the bartenders about them and she acted a little irritated and said "yeah they're in..."....20 mins later the other bartender comes over and apologizes about them never being put in or getting lost in the system. Luckily i was there on an off night and was able to sit at the bar. First impression was the food was reasonably priced! in most metropolis areas food of this caliber would easily be double. Took my wife and kids here for Mother's day. In the interest of full disclosure, my wife is Vietnamese, and a very good cook. The staff was friendly and welcoming. They did have a high chair, but being in such a small space, the only family seating is upstairs. Our 15 month old expects to eat as soon as you put him in a chair, and the food came out almost fast enough to satisfy him. I had the Bun (cold salad with noodles), my wife had the Pho (beef), we ordered the Com Chien (fried rice) for the kids, and at the last minute added the Pork Bun appetizer. The portions were small (with the exception of the fried rice) compared to the other Vietnamese restaurants that have existed around town, and were about 1.5 times the price of what you would pay in major metropolitan cities. I can pretty much forgive this because of the location. The Pork buns and fried rice were my favorites. The Pho was pre-seasoned with Hoisin, and just a little too much for our tastes. The Bun was short on lettuce, and really needed to be in a bigger bowl to be mixed properly. The nuoc mam for my Bun was not nearly enough, but I am confident that they would have brought me more had I asked. The Sirachi bloody mary that my wife had was very good, and the Pork buns were delicious! This is about the only Vietnamese restaurant in town. The Vietnamese cuisine is known for being fresh and cheap. They entrees we had were definitely fresh, but the price will keep our visits to few and far between. read more

We found CO on Yelp and since we were in the area decided to give them a try. We came in around 3PM and despite the time they were pretty busy. We had to head upstairs to find a place to sit. The have large picnic style tables in addition to a few intimate tables. Our waitress came by shortly after we sat down for a drink order and quickly returned for our food order. We ordered the Beef Dumplings, Curry Laksa, Korean Rice Bowl and Caramel Pork Banh Mi. The Beef Dumplings were really good and we quickly devoured them. The Curry Laksa was really good and being a big curry fan I was truly enjoying this amazing dish. The Korean Rice Bowl was very good also with some tasty red sauce from a spicy Korean Paste. Both the Laksa and Korean Bowl were spicy but a low medium at best. The Banh Mi was good but the bread didn't match what we were used to. The meat was plentiful and overall it was a pretty good sandwich. The restaurant is really nice inside, clean and well decorated. We unfortunately had the bad luck of having the rudest large group of college girls sitting a few tables from us. They were super loud and ruined the ambiance for not just us but everyone upstairs. A couple of tables quickly ate and left soon as they could to get free from the loud noise. The staff should have asked them to tone it down as they were way too loud. Great food and drinks. However, my boyfriend and I went on Valentine's Day for a nice dinner. Our server asked us what we would like to drink, served our drinks, and then never came back to our table for TWO HOURS. We watched as everyone around us got their food and left. It was only when my boyfriend got up to get the manager that she went up to our table. When she asked if we needed anything else and we said we have been waiting to order, she said "oh! I went to Co for the first time last Tuesday with my friend and sat at the bar to watch an NBA game. I got the "beef pho mandu" appetizer and "bún bò hue" entree. Both were fantastic. The portion size of my entree was huge; it probably could have fed 3 or 4. The bartender Sam was very nice and helpful. She was keen to never let my glass of water get empty. The manager came by to see how our meals were and gave me a detailed answer and flavor profile after I asked him how to best incorporate the included side of red cabbage, bean sprouts, etc. into my dish. He later had to deal with the antics of a crazy pregnant woman who was trying to dine and dash, and he handled it with a sense of politeness and professionalism I would not have been able to muster. He later apologized to us for having to witness her tantrum. I'll definitely be back! Also, a review in the sidebar tells me "Heather M." is "pretty sure the restaurant is not ADA compliant." Welcome to downtown Charleston! Nowhere is. As for her assertion that "the stairs are flaming hot," I'm not sure how that's possible or how one would even be able to draw that conclusion without being barefoot. Walked in for lunch on a Saturday, was instantly greeted and seated. The inside is modern and clean with great ambiance and music. I sat at the bar because (forever alone) the restaurant had just opened. The bartender gave me drink and food suggestions. I ordered the spicy crab Rangoon and Korean short rib Banh Mi. We love Vietnamese sandwiches and appreciated the vegetarian option (lemongrass tofu) which was a definite taste extravaganza! Love the sriracha aioli and the bread which was soft and fresh. I also loved the tofu buns. My only issue was that the place is not baby friendly as we had to carry our stroller up the stairs, but that was our choice to still eat there. I am such a fan of Vietnamese food. The atmosphere is fun, upstairs reminded me of a beer hall in Germany with long parallel tables. Service was excellent and quick! I had the Pho and it was delish! Honestly not as good as some restaurants that focus mostly on Pho but good enough to make me want to order another bowl. I resisted and instead tried the egg rolls which were awesome. I left full and happy and considering downtown Charleston and the overhead costs they must have I was impressed with my low bill. Made me able to tip the friendly wait staff for their great service.
