I just bought a car from another party recently and it came with some small needs. One of them was the A/C not blowing cold. Of course I waited until it was 90 degrees outside to deal with it. Since the car was not a big investment, I wasn't going to take it to the dealership for repairs where I knew the prices would be considerable. Also, I am a big fan of supporting local small business in my community. A quick Google Maps search showed a few options, one of which was Cliff's Automotive. With the high review rating, I put them at the top of the list. I am glad I did. They lived up to their rating. Not only did they make time for me the same day (I was dying in my black car).... but they were efficient while comprehensive in the service. A full test of my system ensured nothing was leaking and I was simply out of freon. Cliff took care of my car in under an hour while I waited in the shade. Everyone there was friendly and, best of all, I paid the same amount that I was quoted on the phone. Definitely our go to auto repair shop whenever we need repair. Our 2015 Ford transit had a couple electrical issues that the ford dealership couldn't even figure out. Dropped it off Friday expecting to pick it up the following week and got a call from cliff 1 hour later saying it's repaired and very inexpensive. Having had good experience in the past, I am sad to say that Cliff and his team have showed their true colors. Cliffs automotive has been the only shop working on my 86 truck. They replaced all the oil seals and a bunch more work. When replacing oil seals per the shop manual, and the mechanic that worked on the truck for the previous 20 years have both stated you need to tighten the torque converter. The bolts fell out of my torque converter while on vacation with my family for Easter. The mechanic that has the vehicle told me a dishonest mechanic can find a way out of liability and Cliff and his team did. Not only that, but I started receiving random texts with what appear to be Google search results on how to perform work. Beware when using Cliffs shop because even if they make an honest mistake they will leave you high and dry. The truck I have been driving for 17 years and been in my family for well over 25 years is now worthless with a broken crank shaft because of Cliff and his team. read more

We have been a returning customer to cliffs for over 6 years, we last had work done to the rear main oil seal replaced a new radiator and a rebuilt carburetor we went on the road no more than 400 miles in and our truck crapped out. We had it towed to a mechanic shop who previously worked on the truck for 20 plus years and they said that the torque converter bolts were left loose so it vibrated and broke the crank shaft which left us with a damaged motor and transmission , cliffs said they had to wait for the only lift in the shop to lift the truck to gain access to the transmission to loosen the bolts so we waited (no problem ) and now he changed his story by saying he didn't touch anything that is required to be touched (torque converter bolts) when he replaced the seals ....so now we're left with a truck with no working engine or transmission all because bolts weren't tightened.... he won't fix it when he was the last one to handle the truck just a waste of time and all our money to fix a family owned vehicle just disappointed to say the least read more

I had a terrible experience trying to get my brakes worked on in this shop. Very disappointing as many people I know in town go here for service and the location is convenient for state workers. First, I was quoted a price $250 over what other repair shops in the area charge for similar parts and labor. When I tried to get a lower rate as result of this, the owner told me the other shops did not use premier brake pads, did not rotate rotors, and did not do the amount of work his shop did. I called the other shops to inquire about the work and brake pads and they all matched what was offered at Cliff's but were provided for much less. I explained I would not be able to pay $250 more than the other shops, so went back to get my car, at which point I was told I could not have my car without paying an $80 "inspection fee". At no time was I told of this fee, nor did I agree to it. There was nothing posted in the shop to notify customer's of this charge. I was given nothing to sign that indicated I would pay this fee or that my car would be collateral for it. The mechanic then refused to give me my car keys when I told him these things, if I did not pay him $80 for his "labor". He called Cliff who came in and continued to demand I pay him the $80, despite the fact I never agreed to it, and other shops in town will do free diagnoses for brake repairs. I was finally able to pay him $35, which I still think is unfair and bad business practice. He literally threatened to keep my car and go to small claims court if I did not pay the random $35 fee which I was not informed of and did not agree to. Do not go into this shop unless you are prepared to pay more for repair work than you could elsewhere and put up with terrible customer service. Also, do not expect to have any fees explained to you in writing or in advance and beware they will try to hold your car as a form of extortion if you do not pay what fees they randomly demand. All of which is not only poor business practice but also illegal. This was an absolutely terrible experience. read more

This is a great repair shop. The prices are good, and I felt like they weren't taking me for a ride. In fact, when I asked if there was a "cheap fix" for the $700 repair he was suggesting for my 12 year old car, I was told that, while there's nothing cheap, and I need to get this done, it's something that wait until winter, giving me time to save some money. I was very pleased. Additionally, the location is great for anyone who works downtown or for the state. read more

We were on a road trip and stopped into Salem for the night and heard a grinding noise flrom our car. We called Cliffs automotive and he was able to get us in and out so we could get home the next day. He runs a very fair and honest shop. We definitley recommend this shop. read more

This place is a gem! Above and beyond efforts in customer service, honesty, price, speed, value and integrity. Besides outstanding regular services and repairs on my vehicle over the years, Cliff recently spent countless hours troubleshooting a problem that 2 Toyota dealerships did not care to resolve. He provided almost a month's worth of free ( high demand realty near the Capitol), parking in the interim, arranged for competitive bids for towing services, and spent literally hours on the phone describing mechanical issues and reasonable fixes to local dealerships. Friendly owners. My 17-year-old car was leaking transmission fluid heavily. Took to Cliff's and found out the transmission casing had a crack. Wasn't willing to invest in a new or even new-to-me transmission. Car no longer worth a large investment. Asked for other options. Cliff suggested a "gamble fix" at 1/4 the cost of replacing with a used transmission. No guarantees, but worth a try. Didn't work, but for a very nominal additional fee, they tried again. Success! For a very reasonable price, my car does not need to have the transmission replaced! I recommend Cliff's for their quality work, good prices, and honest interactions. read more

The guy who owns the place hates his job and the customers and doesn't repair things correctly. I once saw him drive someones nice new big truck into a huge metal stool, knock it over and keep driving almost on top of it...not a care in the world, didn't even check to see if he damaged the customers vehicle. We have been taking our cars there for years and some of the mechanics are great, Cliff is not. The 5 times he worked on two of our vehicles he FAILED TO REPAIR WHAT WE BROUGHT IT IN FOR. I had to take my mustang there 3 times to get the air conditioner fixed. My husband took his truck there TWICE and the issue still isn't fixed though Cliff said it was. We have yet to get the truck completely fixed. Too much of a hassle and we couldn't afford the time or Money to keep taking it back in, only to have him do a half ass job. If you do go here, don't let Cliff work on your vehicle. read more
