It's a little small inside, but there was no wait for a table and we sat ourselves as instructed (we ended up being asked to move to a smaller table as we sat at the only table available when we arrived and it was a 5 top; we were happy to move). The coffee was excellent and I chose the Sue's Hash Omelet with hash browns and sourdough toast. The toast was a little cold, but the omelet and hash browns were tasty and perfectly seasoned. ** Patty Melt review **…read more Roadside eatery in a tiny strip plaza. Outside, it looks nothing like the classic New England train car style or New Jersey stainless steel style diners, but inside are countertop with stools, booths around the outskirts, and the hustle and bustle giving it a strong diner vibe. Like my visits to many diners, I was here on my patty melt quest. -- Patty Melt: First, the composition is faithful to the prototype, with a quarter pound patty (no smashburger nonsense), rye bread (no sourdough decoy), buttered (not merely toasted), and with the classic Swiss cheese, sautéed onions and thousand Island dressing. No fusion, no reinvention, no omissions, no hipster jive. Good crispness and butteriness on the bread, great melt on the cheese, and noticeable softness to the onions. Most importantly, the beef could be ordered medium rare, and they executed. More softness, with gushing juices and a really pleasing bite. I suspect nothing special to start with, but they cooked it to near perfection. Only quibble would be not much crust to the patty, but not as critical on a patty melt. -- Fries: I could have had tots or a few other options, but fries were fine. Almost certainly frozen, but the skin-on variety and not the dreaded coated kind. Nothing special, but good enough. Service was adequate. It seemed like everyone was prepping to get everything gathered and cleaned for closing about 90 minutes earlier than necessary, but that didn't detract. If anything, it shows initiative and hustle. Not much data to go on, but an easy 4 for me.

Southern NH and DW Highway is a bit like Route 66 for Breakfast: nice if…read moreall you want are fifties metal diners with a Betty Boop and winged car to wake you up, not so great if you're looking for a great brunch with a stiff mimosa or something other than eggs, toast, and bacon. The arrival of Friendly Toast a few years back changed that a bit, but also brought FT's quirky sass and franchised sky-high prices. Sometimes you just want a little toast without the roast, you know? First Watch is easy to miss with its flat grey exterior, but is a bit like a culinary Tardis, without the flippant British humor and time traveling doctor's with owl names. Inside you'll find modern subway tiles, high ceilings, comfy seating, and a massive breakfast menu that covers all the staples, plus an extensive menu of smoothies, salads, and drinks for every taste and flavor. Pumpkin-inspired donut holes with dipping sauces are an oral orgasm. Breakfast crunch tacos add some crackle and pop to standard fair tacos, even for someone already stricken by an unhealthy obsession with great Mexican food. Smoothies are similarly creative and flavorful, inclusive of healthy ingredients like kale, but not so hijacked so much by its flavor that you feel like your sweet apple base that enjoys a long brunch on the weekend lost its cage match to the cranky kale 7x/week gym rat that cures cancer and releases flavonoids, but tastes like cardboard and induces gag reflexes. In short, the brilliance of FW is the ability to be both healthy and decadent in the same space, at reasonable prices, and without feeling like you're eating breakfast in the back of your grandparent's 50s Cadillac at a drive-in movie or going out on a double date with TGI Fridays' friendly, but toasted peak kitsch, post-apocalyptic lime green evil twin. Maybe sometimes you're just looking for good food, reliable service, and a modern decor. And for that, First Watch delivers.

I liked that they had oat milk for my coffee, so many restaurants don't. I ordered the traditional breakfast and hubby got a sandwich and soup. My eggs were ordered over medium but came out closer to over hard. I wanted the bacon crispy but it was far from it. There is no alternative to the seasoned potatoes. Large portion of potatoes. I could see some of the potatoes were browned but many looked like they didn't touch the grill. I didn't care for the seasoning, too much paprika for me. Hubby's sandwich had turkey on it but he said it was pressed turkey and very salty. The soup was fine. The server was good, no complaints about her. We were not rushed to leave. I'm glad I had the coupon to try the restaurant. I don't think I'll be going there again as there are other breakfast places that I think are better.

Of course, this is a personal preference, but then again, i'm just reviewing it from our own opinion. Mom got a veggie one which wound up being almost all brocolli (which she didn't recall being mentioned in the menu description) and had large chunks of almost raw onion in it. I got a western with sausage and it had the same issue with the onions and the green peppers and the sausage was a frozen patty that had been chopped up and was still kinda cold. My 11yo got a cheese omellette and he thought it was all cheese and didn't like the eggs, finding it "too cheesy" and "not enough eggy". My 15yo got chocolate chip pancakes and they weren't thoroughly cooked with some batter still showing. The ambiance was fine, and plenty of people were coming through for pickup and sitting for breakfast. The service was great and the prices were reasonable. Sure, everyone has their off day, and I'm grateful that they were open. But with so many other breakfast places to explore and choose from, I'm not sure my family will be back.
