Getting a drink at this place was like boxing out Emmanuel Lewis. No elbowing and no stress. Effort saved is intoxication earned. From what I recall (little), drinks were cheap and music was essentially Williamsburg Classics -- no real chances being taken here. As I went in December, I didn't really have the chance to check out the patio but suffice it to say that could lead me to award Clem's up to one more star. I've been going to Clem's for probably over ten years. Last nights visit will be my last. The moody, over grown child, with the bad attitude serving drinks on Thursday evenings was such a jerk I left half way thru my drink. If he does not want to be at his job he should just not show up. If asking for a drink in practically empty bar makes you huff and puff maybe bar tending is not for you. I've lived in the area for over 12 years. F this place. I don't know who the bartender was but after my boyfriend waited at the bar for 10 minutes, the bartender rustled around "acting"like he was busy and then came up to him. He asked for an Irish coffee and the bartender says "this is a bar, we don't have coffee." I don't know if it was the type of bar we were in, but we were treated like shit. Hey Clem's bartender! The vibe here is awesome. Everything I want and nothing I don't. The truth is that to look at me. I don't really fit in but....my heart knows I do...the music is amazing and the beer/shot $6 combo is insane! The bartender is delightful and sweet. Before I moved to New York, I rabidly and actively despised hipsters (there are a surpringly large number of hipsters in the Midwest, btw), and thought my cousin, who moved here a year before me, was INSANE for "not minding" them. I don't know if living in Brooklyn wears you down, or if I'm getting soft in my old age, or if there's already something inherently hipster about all New Yorkers, but I am generally not bothered by hipsters - or anyone - these days, unless they act pretentiously toward me, in which case I reserve the right to default to wanting to cut them. I guess it's just pretention that I hate. This is an epiphany equivalent to when I realized that I don't hate kids, just bad parenting. Whoa. I have this "Anti-Hip Williamsburg" list, which Clem's is about to be added to, but the funny thing is, there really is no anti-hip Williamsburg - just a more tolerant Melanie B., and hopefully by reading these reviews, a more tolerant you as well. I think you should go to Clem's, despite the fact that the bartender and many of the patrons were clad in the most ironic outfits possible, because people are kind and down to earth in here, the bartender makes a delicious bloody mary with a sour pickle in it, and the overall affect is relaxed, laid back, and (surprise) unpretentious (I mean, come on, there is a taxidermy deer on the wall next to the American flag - I may as well have been in Ohio). It was a great place to recover from the anxiety-inducing adventure of wedding shopping on Saturday afternoon - and even better, it wasn't busy or loud, but the music was pretty great. I also think, but am not quite sure, that Clem's is one of the older places in Williamsburg too, and it has a nice, warn-in feeling that reminds me of home. Thanks for making me more tolerant, Clem's, and New York City. I thought it was supposed to be the opposite, but Brooklyn, you've done right by me. I still don't think I'm ready to change the name of my list to just plain "Williamsburg," though. ;) read more

I come here to show off my patriotic side-- drink 'em and watch 'em (well no, that's a lie- I'm not THAT patriotic, I was watching the Jets) I slip the bartender an honest Abe and he passes me a nice cold PBR and a whiskey. Seriously, that's where true love starts. Anyway, I'm shocked to hear that the bartenders aren't sarcastic or funny-- I seemed to have found the exact opposite to be true. Sean hit the nail on the head with those two traits. My friend ordered a Brandy Alexander and he obliged-- something most bartenders would be more agitated with than the milk that goes in it. it's also kind of a bizarro celebrity people watching in there. This is my favorite bar! Good people, good vibe, good tunes, BEST bartenders, this is the Cheers (cheesy heh!) of my life. Albeit a bit more expensive than neighboring bars (drink specials though) but it's so worth it! Ended up at Clem's during an unplanned bar crawl along Grand Street last night. My friend thought her Vodka Collins was perfect, and the bartender gave me a very generous pour of Baker's. Plus, they had Turbo Dog on tap. Good crowd for a Thursday--nothing raucous, but everyone was friendly and having a good time. This is a very good sign. Hipster kids go there on weekends and raise a ruckus. But everyone is always in good spirits. No matter how busy it gets, you will be served fast. I was visiting a friend in NYC this weekend and we ended up at Clem's late Saturday night. When we walked in they were playing Slayer, so we knew we had found a winner. We proceeded to drink UFO and listen to the soundtrack of the Misfits, Descendents, Journey, the Queers, and Judas Priest, among others. Clems is a pretty sweet spot and I say this mostly because I live around the corner. It's perfect for those very early days of spring when you're hunting for places with outdoor seating (same goes with late-fall). I'm not a big fan when it's crowded though. They also had some pretty cheap cans of beer. Only mild downside was the sign out front promoted a patio which was mostly just some chairs and tables out front on the sidewalk. Had the opportunity to enjoy a couple of drafts while being engaged in a pleasant conversation with D.. the bar-person. She did make the trip worthwhile. The place was somewhat empty when I arrived around five-ish, with a few locals. I imagine that as the night progresses it fills up with more transplants making their rounds. read more
