It's been years since I've had Clemente's and had missed their ravioli. I came into a dim and empty restaurant. I'm glad they got a place of their own now. Easy access and easy parking. However, it seems they do not get much foot traffic. It's just me, but I decided to get the family meal, which could feed 3-4: spaghetti, soup, malfatti, ravioli, and some bread. Joanna, who was quite friendly, said they were having a sale for about $75. I added meatballs. It came out to be $125 for everything, with tip. Kinda pricy but lots of left overs? It was a lot of food but I am sad to say, I could not finish it. I got a big tray of malfatti with the ravioli. I barely felt I tasted any ravioli. The malfatti was kind of sour for some reason. The brown meat sauce was very salty, and not that tasty. The same sauce was used for the spaghetti, which made it just salty and unappetizing. The soup was ok because it was not as salty. The meatballs were in the same brown sauce and hard. The long and hard baguette that came with it was not worth dealing with. Sad to say, I could not even give the food away if I wanted to. I drove over from Sonoma to enjoy some childhood memories with my son as we used to dine at the old Depot when he was a lil one. After Depot closed I'd grab some Malfatti and Gnocchi behind Val's liquor store and now their new location on Imola. We have been going here for years starting with when they were at The Depot. It has been over 30 years. We have not had their malfatti's since they were at Val's. I decided to pick up some dinner on my way home. I ordered 4 dozen of each and a loaf of bread, came out to 92! I was in shock. Joanna asked if she could put it together. At first, I said yes, but then decided I wanted it separated. I walked out of there with 2 trays and a loaf of bread. For that amount of money, I should have had salad and appetizers included. I hate to say it, but I can't see spending that much for the amount of food we got. I know they are a mom and pop shop, but I can see why people choose other options. The price has gone to $13.52 per dozen (Lawlers is $5.49), and after placing this year's order and then paying, she has the nerve to say 18% or 20% tip? Saying it's the machine asking. Mind you, this is an order to pick up. I come from an hour away for this. In addition, the past few years Joanne has gotten pushier and pusher. Fast forward to now I decided to try it now that it was conveniently in River Park shopping center. Newly opened and only carry out, if I remember right. Anyway, I ordered the local favorite malfatti, and I think that means badly done or something close to that in Italian. THREE-GENERATION ITALIAN FOOD "HIDDEN" IN LIQUOR STORE. Napa is a gem for Italian food since it was once a blue-collar farming area that attracted a lot of Italian laborers and food traditions have been passed on. Clemente's food is humble and unpretentious, something locals can grab quickly and avoid the crazy gaudy area that downtown is turning into. For the Adventurers there is pasta invented in Napa, with Clemente working at the kitchen that created it and bringing the recipe here. It is called a "Malfatti" and the Napa variation of this is meaty ravioli filling rolled in a thin layer of soft dough and served in their meat sauce. The legend is it was created for a hungry sports team and made from ravioli filling with hand rolled dough because they were out of ravioli skin. Very unique and worth it just to try. It most reminds me of a higher-end canned Chef Boyardee pasta with meat. Meant as a compliment and not an insult; it tastes nostalgic and simple. How innovative something that means "mistake" in Italian exists to this day unchanged from the original and different than anything you'll find in Italy. We also had the meatball and salad which we loved, great pricing and simple but great flavors. Malfatti and Meatball came in their meatsauce, which is great for dipping bread. I just ordered via door dash. It was quick, the ONLY good thing about this order. I rarely post bad reviews but this experience was awful. The "salad" of chick peas, red beans, olives (hello fresh? NO) and some old pieces or brown lettuce, was well seasoned, other than that, not a salad and get some fresh lettuce. The "risotto" was inedible. It was like porridge. It was dinner cooked you couldn't even tell it was risotto. I threw away and made boxed mac and cheese. I'd like to get a full refund but Door dash only offers $5. Insane. read more
