For this review I had the traditional Texas trio (brisket, sausage and ribs) with 2 sides (potato salad and beans). Positives...Sweet Tea, hot rolls, very tasty "tater" salad, western ambiance and solid hospitality. Negatives...brisket crust and jalepeno cheese sausage was way too salty, beans were bland and the ribs were overcooked (I was actually served an end rib with burned crust---who does that?) If you're keeping count, my positive comments outnumbered the bad but you don't go to a bbq joint for tea & sides. We mainly went here to get take home meat so no sides. We were here on a Tuesday around 4:30 pm. At first we weren't sure they would have enough ribs but they managed to scrape enough together. All the meat was good, but the ribs and chicken were the standouts. The brisket had no smoke at all but it was tender. The sauce was a thin but fairly tasty. Here on vacation and stopped after a movie. I ordered the sirloin tri tip and brisket. The tips were mostly fat. Only 3 small bites of meat. The brisket was decent not as tender as some but not bad either. My husband got the cheese and jalapeño sausage, which was very good. The fried okra was not fresh, the beans seemed from a can with the bacon added later. It was obvious the beans were not cooked with bacon. The Mac n cheese was OK. We were looking for somewhere new when we saw all the cars in the parking lot, so we decided to stop in and check it out. They were able to seat us right away, and the waitress was right there with the menus and took our drink orders. We both ordered the double meat plates, which included BBQ Brisket, tri tip, and jalapeno cheese sausage. The rolls and homemade bread were wonderful, and the BBQ was all delicious. The sides were plentiful, and the waitress was attentive and friendly. Quite possibly the best chopped beef sandwich in the great state of Texas. The corn on the cob was cooked perfectly and the pea salad reminded of the one the ladies at church made when I was a kid. Awesome place, great food taxidermy and very nice servers. Worth a stop. read more

I went there with a group from church. I had the catfish dinner. The fish was cold, the fries were cold, and the hush puppies were cold and almost burnt. The coleslaw was the only thing that was good. The service was okay. I won't be going back there for a while. read more

Passed by one of the advertising billboards on the 35 N several times and decided to give it a try. We have been here 3 times now and the food has always been decent. Good size portions. The staff has always been nice and the restaurant clean. This last time I had the chicken fried steak sandwich it was good very tender and the portion was substantial. As for BBQ items, most everything is decent nothing has really let us down. Their peach cobbler is good. I`ll definitely go back occasionally. Some advice about Clems. If you have been away from Temple for awhile and come back expecting the old Clem Mikeska style BBQ, forget it. It's gone. The awesome sirloin trip tip that all of us loved is history. It's been replaced by thinly sliced, dry, no flavor meat that's being called "Premium Beef." About the only thing that is still the same is the sausage. I think that after Clem hung up his apron, the family decided to take another direction. It's their choice and their restaurant, so no argument there. And I'll have to admit that as long as you don't order BBQ, they serve up some pretty good food. Probably one of the best ribeye steaks that you'll find in the area. I still stop by there, but in all honestly they need to change the name and sign and call it Clem Mikeskas Restaurant. I don't usually dine in and I usually stop by here once or twice a month. Quality is good staff was friendly. It's a little pricey but then what isn't these days. I'd recommend it. Where 98% of all stores are closed on Sundays After a failed skydiving attempt due to the bad juju of Dunky, We decided to grab some grub nearby... who would've thunk that this would be an arduous task that JRR Tolkien would be inspired to write a novel on? We end up at Clem Mikeska's BBQ. No racial, but if you want to see some extreme cliche stereotypes of Texas... come to Clems. Taxidermy on the walls (and i'm pretty sure i saw a baby bear cub), hodgepodge of street signs and unrelated pictures..... guys with southern drawls that make you feel like you're in a western film... Clems has it all We ordered the fried pickles, ribeye, briskey, pork ribs, and sausage. Our sides were asparagus, buttered potatoes, and broccoli salad. Fried Pickles - Thinly sliced pickles dredged in flour seasoned with Clem's "secret" seasoning (salt, paprika, pepper, milk powder, MSG, and other spices) were tasty. The batter to pickle ratio wasn't ideal for my extremely boujee valentine... but who cares? Ribeye - Honestly not sure if it was a ribeye (i've never seen a ribeye shaped so oddly) but hey it was red meat and it was grilled so i can get widdit. I asked for medium rare and ended up with uneven spots of temperature/doneness ranging from "still moo-ing" to "lets-make-this-into-ribeye-jerky" (jerky was a new item on their menu actually) ... The grill marks were a nice touch i thought :-) Briskey - Dunky and I made sure to request "extra fatty and moist" brisket.... and we get lean? I mean.. i know we were probably the only Asians that they've seen in the past 9 years but our english is acceptable (mine at least)... Not sure what happened there but unfortunately, this brisket was long past being able to be revived.... it's like the brisket was going through rigor mortis.. at least that's how stiff it was :( Pork Ribs - The shock of the night... Clem showed us that he's capable of smoking some decent pork ribs, might i add that a pork rib is extremely forgiving? (hater) The rib wasn't mushy and had a great bite to it. Try it with Clem's hot sauce... it's got a huge kick so beware Sausage - Imagine Eckrich smoked sausage and bingo. Clem must have decided to take the shortcut on his sausage.... but i mean... it's sausage so it's going to be passable for me. Asparagus, butter potatoes, and broccoli salad - The asparagus was seasoned and grilled well (it was a little overcooked but no worries) The butter potatoes were scalloped potatoes that were saturated in mono and polysaturated fat. Fun Fact: The waitress mentioned that people order the buttered potatoes and ask for the butter to be drained... my brain is hurting. The broccoli salad was basically coleslaw with the cabbage being replaced with broccoli. Clem Mikeska is known to have renowned barbecue. I was in Temple for a few hours and scoped out Yelp for a bbq joint, and Clems was one of the top reviewed so I opted the check them out. It looks like a log cabin, you walk in and see lots of animal and wildlife / camping memorabilia mounted on the walls, it kinda reminded me of a cross between Bill Miller's BBQ and Rudy's in regards to the decor. Now onto the food. They had a pork rib special w/ 2 sides for $8.95, I also got a small portion of the lean + regular beef brisket. Sides I can recall: mac'n'cheese, green beans, baked potato, corn cob, some noodle casserole (ehh), broccoli salad, and beans. I took what I thought looked best - the mashed potatoes and cole slaw. Everything tasted good, but nothing was great or outta this world. The rib meat was not fall-off-the-bone type yet was tasty, the lean brisket was dry but - so is Rudy's - and the brisket was good - yet not as good as Salt Lick's or Sam's. The cole slaw was on the sweet side, a little wet, but still good. The potatoes were nothing special - - they could add some garlic to mix it up but what the hay - who am I? I know - - the world doesn't revolve around moi. The sauce: it wasn't the best sauce, but good enough. It looks like a beef gravy consistency - like it belongs on mashed potatoes. It's not that smokey, a little sweet, somewhat bland. They also have a spicy-hot sauce that's vinegar based - - I added some of that to the bbq sauce and it gave it a good kick - - so this I would recommend you do. But what made this place 4 stars was the awesome bread and sweet pickles. The bread must be homemade from a local bakery, it almost looks like brioche and it's way better tasting and quality than the usual white bread you get elsewhere. The sweet pickles were a nice added touch, just loved those, have as much as you want. IMO, a die-hard bbq critic could rate this a 3.5 star experience, but I didn't try the sausage or the chicken, the place was very clean, the employees were nice, and that bread is really damn good - - so that = 4 stars. I wanted to steal a loaf but I didn't bring my backpack or extra long winter coat (that would of looked suspicious anyhow). If they only made some minor recipe adjustments to the sauce, mashed potatoes, and more smokiness to the bbq then I think this place could be outta this world.
