The quality of the food was excellent! I ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket and baby back ribs. My better half ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket and sausage. All the meats were cooked extremely well and had that nice wood cooked flavor to them. They were seasoned very well and not overdone at all. The workers were very polite and kind. They kept us informed as we waited on our food. We had potato salad and green beans on one plate and potato salad and fried okra on the other. The sides were very complimentary to the meats. All portions were adequate and left us satisfied. I will definitely visit them again! read more

Jalapeño saddles (Texas Twinkies) are good if a little anorexic. Brisket is okay. Sausage is pretty good. Spare ribs are nicely done. Sides were on par with other smokehouses. Price was a little bit higher than I expected. Decor and seating is nice. Lots of room for big parties. The waiter was on top of things. The real star of the show is the goats and alpacas. Coming from chicago I hear "big hoss" and I immediately think of Marian hossa, which means obviously I have to try this place , makes sense right? Great food! Our server was awesome. She was really attentive and patient with my two young kids. This place has DIET PEPSI so my mom immediately said she loved this place. My ONLY complaint is that my three meat plate was all piled into one section of the plate, I know it's silly to say, but " I don't like my food touching other food" , the pulled pork juice ended up under the sausage and the brisket , I just like to taste each meat separately to get that real taste. Nevertheless, the food was great the brisket was up there in one of my favorites ! The mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were legit as well !!And the bill was relatively cheap compared to other bbq joints ! BYOB is nice as well. Oh yea get some old bread for the goats outside ! 2024 Review. The schnitzel we have enjoyed for many years has REALLY gone downhill. It's not as thin as it used to be and the spaetzle is TERRIBLE (ranging from uncooked to overcooked). A bit disappointed, I was looking for a new BBQ spot. Staff Services was great. Our server kept checking on us and informing us about the status of our meal. Starting with our drinks and appetizers. I got sweet tea, it was good. My son and brother-law had lemonade which my brother in law did not like and ask for a bottle of coke. We order the jalapeños wrapped with bacon, and mozzarella stick. Jalapeños were ok nothing special and were cold. My family loves jalapeños wrapped in bacon neither is to say we had one each did not fished all of them. Mozzarella stick store bought. Moving to our main course: There was four of us. I order the chopped brisket, sweet potatoes and corn. Sweet potatoes were not crispy and tasted ok they were cold. Corn was ok and cold, brisket was disappointing and cold. My son order ribs, Mac & cheese and beans. He loves these things and really only ate the the Mac-Cheese. My brother in law got the pulled pork fries and coleslaw. He said the only good good thing in his plate was the coleslaw. He tried my chopped brisket and my sons ribs and did not like either. He level them as pulled pork 1, chopped brisket 2 and rib as #3.. but will not buy again. My husband got the brisket sweet potatoes and Mac-cheese his plate was ok overall and his plate was hot. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen, but this restaurant did not impress us at all. We will not be going back. It is very affordable. We spend $88 for four people. This place is located in a farm has goats and lama, very unique not in the city that's a plus. read more

Went with a large group last night. We were seated right away (there were only a handful of people there), but it took forever for our server to take our drink order. She finally did, and eventually brought our drinks out. She then took our entree order and disappeared for a long time. We eventually got our food, asked for refills on our drinks and started eating. The food was just bad. None of it was great. My husband had the brisket quesadillas. It was an enormous portion, but there was so much sauce and grease that they were impossible to eat. I had the baked potato with bbq. It was cold and undercooked, and all of the brisket on it was either total fat or completely crunchy/burnt. No real meat to enjoy. The bbq sauce was nothing special. The kids had chicken nuggets and fries, but the chicken nuggets were so over cooked they couldn't eat them. We definitely won't go back. read more

Was pretty decent bbq. Sadly it was byob but the tea was good. I had the 2 meat plate with sliced brisket and pork ribs. Sides were pinto beans and Mac-n-cheese. It's Friday catfish at the Big Hoss! I really like how it's brighter inside now, and you can actually see your food better before eating it. The servers here are really nice and attentive. Wish we came earlier so we can still the lamas and the goats. Anyways, they now have 3 size options of catfish platter, small, medium, and large. And it comes with two side dish options too. The portions are pretty good and you won't be able to eat it all. The catfish was nice and crispy on the outside and nice and tender inside. The side dishes were okay. We also ordered Togo 2 meat platter, pork spare ribs and brisket for tomorrow snacking. I tasted the brisket and it was tender and good smoky flavor. We don't come here very often, but the catfish Friday's never disappoint us. Highly recommend it! read more

This if for everyone who dines out...post COVID, and has never been blessed with working in a restaurant. FIRST, the fact that their doors are open is a HUGE accomplishment. They're short staffed, but they have staff, which is a huge accomplishment. And most importantly, being short staffed and "having an off night" I think every single employee in the FOH took a moment or two to touch our table. Some nothing more then asking if we needed anything...making sure we had our order taken, apologizing for the wait...these restaurants are working their asses off to keep their doors open. So if you can't find a bit of patience and grace in yourself when you're going out to eat these days, might I suggest you stay home. Plus my (2 year old) son got to feed goats, and met a little 3 year old girlfriend in the parking lot. I think they're doing just fine, and have the important things on the forefront, honest service. read more

What I like about Big Hoss is it's open Sunday afternoon. It's very rare in Killeen for any family owned restaurant to be open on Sunday. Now I'm going after church myself so I fully understand taking a day for worship and family. The portions are generous and the pricing is fair. Was hurting to find a real BBQ place in San Antonio but didn't have much luck. My wife and I found this little gem whilst out finding weekend bargains/treasures. We stopped in late lunch time on a Saturday to be met with a memorial service of sorts (the place was packed). We were still able to be seated and later served by a nice waiter who was very friendly and very attentive. We felt adventurous so opted to try the all you can eat 4 meat plate. Service was not slow at all - we had our food served pretty quickly and I wish I had taken pictures as it was probably the prettiest sight of BBQ I have seen since landing in Texas mid 2018! Unfortunately we did not have time to take pictures as we went right to work on our food (Brisket, Jalapeno Sausage, Pork Ribs, and Turkey). The meat was out of this world taste wise, was extremely fresh/tender, and the initial plate simply had so much food - that we both decided against a re-order! As for their sides - we had their fries (absolutely delicious), mac & cheese (meh.. I wasnt too impressed but not enough to deduct any stars), and cole slaw - which was also very delicious. The food & drinks (fountain/tea) turned opt to be around $50 - but it was worth every penny! We will definitely be back! read more

Drive all the way out here... Get to the door and their closed for a private party. That was my fault. Went back today and had the bbq and sausage. Brisket was dry and tasteless, sides were without flavor(green beans+mac&cheese). I waited for about 10 mins before even someone walked over for my drink, another 10 after I ordered. Wasn't to busy in there, nice atmosphere. Waitress offered me free desert even though I did not complain or act upset. Probably knew it was taking a long time. read more

This was the worst BBQ I have ever had, dry tough and burnt. The salad was served in a styrofoam cup, I guess they didn't want to splurge on paper bowls. The cole slaw was really bland with almost no dressing. I'm not sure how they get as good of reviews as they do. My wife and I were shocked at how much they charge for such poor quality. read more

I keep coming back because the staff is friendly and helpful. Pulled pork, brisket and potato salad are delicious. Although no dining in right now, their sitting area is very large. Kids would love the farm animals on the property. And they are 2A friendly so you don't need to leave your "tool" at home or in the car. read more

Worst ever dining experience. Went with a party of 12 for birthday in a private room. We were the only customers in the restaurant. I have never seen service this bad. The 2 waitresses on duty did not have a clue what they were doing and spent most of their time sitting in a both talking to each other and playing with their phones. We waited an hour for our food to come. I went back into the kitchen to see what was going on and found all of our food sitting under heat lamps and the waitresses still sitting in a booth talking. When they saw me going to the kitchen they got up and came back, finally delivering our food. Several in our party had ordered dishes to share and the waitresses had to be asked to bring extra plates. Never did they come back to ask if we needed anything else. The food was OK, but not great. Most definitely This family owned (and Walter is a Veteran as well ) restaurant is a jewel outside Killeen. So many of The Brown's family and friends made this a very special place to eat and the decor is old west and has a story about each booth, and local people some are dedicated to. Walter's mother has her own nook he made just for his Oma. She's watching him from heaven. Beware! This place is full of itself, the girl that answered the phone had no customer service skills and hung up on me when I inquired about how they sell their brisket. I then called back and the owner came on the phone, what a tool! I asked them if they sell their brisket by the pound and he said "yea, a half pound or pound". Excuse me, but this is not by the pound, a BBQ place that sells it by the pound can sell any increment of a pound, 1/8, 1/4, 3/4, etc. I asked him how they weigh it and he said "in their kitchen and the register is set up for only half pound and pound". Can you say rip off! I asked him if he was from Texas, cuz every other BBQ place weighs it out for you and charges accordingly. He said "I am not every other BBQ place and I do it the way I want!" What an A-hole, he saved me a trip out to the back woods place his establishment resides. This kind of behavior tells me exactly why they only have a couple reviews on Yelp. I guess his 51 years of being "in the business" has taught him nothing of customer service and he'll continue to be the pompous jerk I am assuming he has always been. 45 minute wait on foods that were already prepared, just needed cutting up? There were plenty of empty tables (now I know why) so being crowded was not the excuse. Sausage had a dry coating indicative of exposure to air, not freshly cut into eating size. Beans were dry, and tasted suspiciously of Ranch Style Beans out of the can. My side order was not what I ordered. Had to ask for more ice in tea, since the original amount melted away immediately. The only meat that was not dry, fresh tasting, or worthy of the barbecue label was the brisket. I ordered the all-you-can-eat (four meats), and finished my plate with the opportunity to order more (always order more if it is all-you-can-eat; some kind of challenge), passed on another helping because I just wanted to get out of there. There was a bottle-neck of people at the entrance/exit, and we were forced to stand in the middle of the restaurant waiting to pay for our meal. Some were ordering food to go at the front register, blocking the entrance/exit. Bad engineering, or foresight. My wife ordered a $10.00 plate (two meats), simply not worth it. read more
